We derived the properties of the terrestrial magnetopause(MP)from two modeling approaches,one global–fluid,the other local–kinetic,and compared the results with data collected in situ by the Magnetospheric Multiscale 2(MMS2)spacecraft.We used global magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)simulations of the Earth’s magnetosphere(publicly available from the NASA-CCMC[National Aeronautics and Space Administration–Community Coordinated Modeling Center])and local Vlasov equilibrium models(based on kinetic models for tangential discontinuities)to extract spatial profiles of the plasma and field variables at the Earth’s MP.The global MHD simulations used initial solar wind conditions extracted from the OMNI database at the time epoch when the MMS2 observes the MP.The kinetic Vlasov model used asymptotic boundary conditions derived from the same in situ MMS measurements upstream or downstream of the MP.The global MHD simulations provide a three-dimensional image of the magnetosphere at the time when the MMS2 crosses the MP.The Vlasov model provides a one-dimensional local view of the MP derived from first principles of kinetic theory.The MMS2 experimental data also serve as a reference for comparing and validating the numerical simulations and modeling.We found that the MP transition layer formed in global MHD simulations was generally localized closer to the Earth(roughly by one Earth radius)from the position of the real MP observed by the MMS.We also found that the global MHD simulations overestimated the thickness of the MP transition by one order of magnitude for three analyzed variables:magnetic field,density,and tangential speed.The MP thickness derived from the local Vlasov equilibrium was consistent with observations for all three of these variables.The overestimation of density in the Vlasov equilibrium was reduced compared with the global MHD solutions.We discuss our results in the context of future SMILE(Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer)campaigns for observing the Earth’s MP. 展开更多

We report on the magnetohydrodynamic impact on the axisymmetric flow of Al_(2)O_(3)/Cu nanoparticles suspended in H_(2)O past a stretched/shrinked sheet.With the use of partial differential equations and the corresponding thermophysical characteristics of nanoparticles,the physical flow process is illustrated.The resultant nonlinear system of partial differential equations is converted into a system of ordinary differential equations using the suitable similarity transformations.The transformed differential equations are solved analytically.Impacts of the magnetic parameter,solid volume fraction and stretching/shrinking parameter on momentum and temperature distribution have been analyzed and interpreted graphically.The skin friction and Nusselt number were also evaluated.In addition,existence of dual solution was deduced for the shrinking sheet and unique solution for the stretching one.Further,Al_(2)O_(3)/H_(2)O nanofluid flow has better thermal conductivity on comparing with Cu/H_(2)O nanofluid.Furthermore,it was found that the first solutions of the stream are stable and physically realizable,whereas those of the second ones are unstable. 展开更多

The numerical computations for the magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) mixed convective flow of a non-Newtonian Casson nanofluid(Cu/H2O) within an open-ended cavity formed by earthquake-induced faults are analyzed, aiming to investigate the fluid dynamics and convection processes of geothermal systems. Such cavities, typically found in energy reservoirs, are primarily caused by tensional fault zones formed due to the accumulated energy from the disintegration of radioactive materials. These cavities play a crucial role in energy transmission, particularly in the form of heat. The focus of this paper is on the laminar, steady, and incompressible fluid flow. An inclined magnetic field is applied with an angle of inclination z = 30°. Additionally, a heated material with two vertical corrugated walls is placed at the center of the cavity. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations(PDEs) are transformed into the equations with a nondimensional form. The Galerkin finite element method(FEM) is implemented to solve the dimensionless equations. The impacts of key variables, including the Reynolds number Re, the volume fraction(0.01≤ φ_(p)≤0.05), the Hartmann number Ha, and the Casson parameter(0.5≤γ≤1.0), on the velocity and temperature distributions are studied. The analysis of the fluid flow and the heat transfer rate is conducted. The results indicate that the velocity increases as the volume fraction and the Reynolds number increase.Similarly, the heat transfer rate rises with the Reynolds number and the volume fraction,while decreases with the higher Hartmann number. The Nusselt number increases with the volume fraction and the Reynolds number but decreases with the Hartmann number. 展开更多

The reverse magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)energy bypass technology is a promising energy redis⁃tribution technology in the scramjet system,in augmented with a power generation equipment to supply the neces⁃sary long-distance flight airframe power.In this paper,a computational model of the scramjet magnetohydrody⁃namic channel is developed and verified by using the commercial software Fluent.It is found that when the mag⁃netic induction intensity is 1,2,3,4 T,the power generation efficiency is 22.5%,22.3%,22.0%,21.5%,and decreases with the increase of the magnetic induction intensity,and the enthalpy extraction rate is 0.026%,0.1%,0.21%,0.34%,and increases with the increase of the magnetic induction intensity.The deceleration ef⁃fect of electromagnetic action on the airflow in the power channel increases with the increase of magnetic induc⁃tion intensity.The stronger the magnetic field intensity,the more obvious the decreasing effect of fluid Mach num⁃ber in the channel.The power generation efficiency decreases as the magnetic induction intensity increases and the enthalpy extraction rate is reversed.As the local currents gathering at inlet and outlet of the power generation area,total temperature and enthalpy along the flow direction do not vary linearly,and there are maximum and minimum values at inlet and outlet.Increasing the number of electrodes can effectively regulate the percentage of Joule heat dissipation,which can improve the power generation efficiency. 展开更多

Observations of transmission spectra reveal that hot Jupiters and Neptunes are likely to possess escaping atmospheres driven by stellar radiation.Numerous models predict that magnetic fields may exert significant influences on the atmospheres of hot planets.Generally,the escaping atmospheres are not entirely ionized,and magnetic fields only directly affect the escape of ionized components within them.Considering the chemical reactions between ionized components and neutral atoms,as well as collision processes,magnetic fields indirectly impact the escape of neutral atoms,thereby influencing the detection signals of planetary atmospheres in transmission spectra.In order to simulate this process,we developed a magnetohydrodynamic multi-fluid model based on MHD code PLUTO.As an initial exploration,we investigated the impact of magnetic fields on the decoupling of H^(+)and H in the escaping atmosphere of the hot Neptune GJ436b.Due to the strong resonant interactions between H and H^(+),the coupling between them is tight even if the magnetic field is strong.Of course,alternatively,our work also suggests that merging H and H^(+)into a single flow can be a reasonable assumption in MHD simulations of escaping atmospheres.However,our simulation results indicate that under the influence of magnetic fields,there are noticeable regional differences in the decoupling of H^(+)and H.With the increase of magnetic field strength,the degree of decoupling also increases.For heavier particles such as O,the decoupling between O and H^(+)is more pronounced.Our findings provide important insights for future studies on the decoupling processes of heavy atoms in the escaping atmospheres of hot Jupiters and hot Neptunes under the influence of magnetic fields. 展开更多

After approximately 5μs, an X-type magnetic field line topology is formed at the center of the chamber. With the formation of the X-type topology of magnetic field lines, we can also find the rapid increase of the current and ratio of the common flux to the private flux in this area. Multi-channel soft x-ray (SX) detectors are applied to generate images of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillation on the HT-7 tokamak, and the data from SX cameras are analysed by using the Fourier-Bessel harmonic reconstruction method and the singular value decomposition. The image reconstruction of SX emissivity is obtained on the assumption of plasma rigid rotation, One of the important phenomena in the HT-7 discharge is the transition from the sawtooth oscillations to the MHD oscillations when the plasma density grows higher. The MHD structure observed in the SX tomography is featured as follows: the magnetic surface of MHD structure is made up of the crescent-shaped "hot core" and the circular "cold bubble". The structure of the magnetic surface is relatively stable. It rotates in the direction of the electron diamagnetic drift at a frequency being the oscillation frequency of the MHD oscillations. 展开更多

The present paper is concerned with a class of ex- act solutions to the steady Navier-Stokes equations for the incompressible Newtonian viscous electrically conducting fluid flow due to a porous disk rotating with a constant angu- lar speed. The three-dimensional hydromagnetic equations of motion are treated analytically to obtained exact solutions with the inclusion of suction and injection. The well-known thinning/thickening flow field effect of the suction/injection is better understood from the constructed closed form veloc- ity equations. Making use of this solution, analytical formu- las for the angular velocity components as well as for the permeable wall shear stresses are derived. Interaction of the resolved flow field with the surrounding temperature is fur- ther analyzed via the energy equation. The temperature field is shown to accord with the dissipation and the Joule heating. As a result, exact formulas are obtained for the temperature field which take different forms corresponding to the condi- tion of suction or injection imposed on the wall. 展开更多

The interaction between a converging cylindrical shock and double density interfaces in the presence of a saddle magnetic field is numerically investigated within the framework of ideal magnetohydrodynamics.Three fluids of differing densities are initially separated by the two perturbed cylindrical interfaces.The initial incident converging shock is generated from a Riemann problem upstream of the first interface.The effect of the magnetic field on the instabilities is studied through varying the field strength.It shows that the Richtmyer-Meshkov and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities are mitigated by the field,however,the extent of the suppression varies on the interface which leads to non-axisymmetric growth of the perturbations.The degree of asymmetry of the interfacial growth rate is increased when the seed field strength is increased. 展开更多

This paper studies stratified magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of tan- gent hyperbolic nanofluid past an inclined exponentially stretching surface. The flow is subjected to velocity, thermal, and solutal boundary conditions. The partial differential systems are reduced to ordinary differential systems using appropriate transformations. The reduced systems are solved for convergent series solutions. The velocity, temperature, and concentration fields are discussed for different physical parameters. The results indi- cate that the temperature and the thermal boundary layer thickness increase noticeably for large values of Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects. It is also observed that the buoyancy parameter strengthens the velocity field, showing a decreasing behavior of temperature and nanoparticle volume fraction profiles. 展开更多

In this analysis,the magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow of Casson fluid over a permeable stretching/shrinking sheet in the presence of wall mass transfer is studied.Using similarity transformations,the governing equations are converted to an ordinary differential equation and then solved analytically.The introduction of a magnetic field changes the behavior of the entire flow dynamics in the shrinking sheet case and also has a major impact in the stretching sheet case.The similarity solution is always unique in the stretching case,and in the shrinking case the solution shows dual nature for certain values of the parameters.For stronger magnetic field,the similarity solution for the shrinking sheet case becomes unique. 展开更多

Magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)instabilities are widely observed during tokamak plasma operation.Magnetic diagnostics provide important information which supports the understanding and control of MHD instabilities.This paper presents the current status of the magnetic diagnostics dedicated to measuring MHD instabilities at the J-TEXT tokamak;the diagnostics consist of five Mirnov probe arrays for measuring high-frequency magnetic perturbations and two saddle-loop arrays for low-frequency magnetic perturbations,such as the locked mode.In recent years,several changes have been made to these arrays.The structure of the probes in the poloidal Mirnov arrays has been optimized to improve their mechanical strength,and the number of in-vessel saddle loops has also been improved to support better spatial resolution.Due to the installation of high-field-side(HFS)divertor targets in early 2019,some of the probes were removed,but an HFS Mirnov array was designed and installed behind the targets.Owing to its excellent toroidal symmetry,the HFS Mirnov array has,for the first time at J-TEXT,provided valuable new information about the locked mode and the quasi-static mode(QSM)in the HFS.Besides,various groups of magnetic diagnostics at different poloidal locations have been systematically used to measure the QSM,which confirmed the poloidal mode number m and the helical structure of the QSM.By including the HFS information,the 2/1 resonant magnetic perturbation(RMP)-induced locked mode was measured to have a poloidal mode number m of~2. 展开更多

We consider a nonlinear hyperbolic system of two conservation laws which arises in ideal magnetohydrodynamics and includes second-order terms accounting for magnetic resistivity and Hall effect. We show that the initial value problem for this model may lead to solutions exhibiting complex wave structures, including undercompressive nonclassical shock waves. We investigate numerically the subtle competition that takes place between the hyperbolic, diffusive, and dispersive parts of the system. Following Abeyratne, Knowles, LeFloch, and Truskinovsky, who studied similar questions arising in fluid and solid flows, we determine the associated kinetic function which characterizes the dynamics of undereompressive shocks driven by resistivity and Hall effect. To this end, we design a new class of "schemes with eontroled dissipation", following recent work by LeFloch and Mohammadian. It is now recognized that the equivalent equation associated with a scheme provides a guideline to design schemes that capture physically relevant, nonclassical shocks. We propose a new class of schemes based on high-order entropy conservative, finite differences for the hyperbolic flux, and high-order central differences for the resistivity and Hall terms. These schemes are tested for several regimes of (co-planar or not) initial data and parameter values, and allow us to analyze the properties of nonclassical shocks and establish the existence of monotone kinetic functions in magnetohydrodynamics. 展开更多

It controls the generating and structuring of the solar mag- netic fields, causes the accumulation of magnetic non-potential energy in the solar atmosphere and triggers the explosive magnetic energy release, manifested as vi- olent solar flares and coronal mass ejections. Nowadays detailed observations in solar astrophysics from space and on the ground urge a great need for the studies of magnetohydrodynamics and plasma physics to achieve better understanding of the mechanism or mechanisms of solar activity. On the other hand, the spectac- ular solar activity always serves as a great laboratory of magnetohydrodynamics. In this article, we reviewed a few key unresolved problems in solar activity studies and discussed the relevant issues in solar magnetohydrodynamics. 展开更多
