The crushed rocks are used as a filling material in mined丒out areas of underground mining. Compared with the man-made filling materials, the crushed rocks exhibit higher compressibility and lower stability, which may result in instability of surrounding rock and surface subsidence. To study the creep compaction behavior of crushed mudstones, a series of creep tests are conducted. The investigations show that the creep compaction behavior of crushed mudstones is highly dependent on the original grain composition and axial stress applied on the samples. The samples with more large particles are easier to deform at initial loading stage for more large voids existed in the samples, and exhibit greater stability than those with smaller particles when the axial stress less than the bearing capacity of uframework structure When the axial stress is higher than 20 MPa, the influences of grain composition on deformability of crushed mudstones are weakened after the samples experience repeated compression. At lower stress level, the creep behavior prefers to occur in the samples w.h smaller particles, which is mainly caused by particles flow without significant particle breakage. As the axial stress increases, the single-sized sample with smaller particle size and the well-graded sample with larger Talbol power exponent n present more unstable under the constant stress. In addition, the filling of the residual intergranular voids by small particles formed by crushing and splitting behavior is the main cause of creep deformation. Lastly, a creep equation of crushed mudstones is obtained in this paper, which can agree with the experimental results in good. 展开更多

The differences in organic matter abundance and rock composition between shale and mudstone determine the discrepancy of their contributions to the formation of conventional and shale oil/gas reservoirs. The evaluation criteria of source rocks are different in the future exploration in self-sourced petroleum systems.Shales are deposited in deep/semi-deep lacustrine, with low sedimentation rate and chemical depositions of various degrees, while mudstones are mostly formed in shallow lacustrine/lakeside,with high deposition rate and density flow characteristics.Three factors contribute to the enrichment of organic matter in shales, including the"fertility effect"caused by volcanic ash deposition and hydrothermal injection, excessive and over-speed growth of organisms promoted by radioactive materials, and deep-water anaerobic environment and low sedimentation rate to protect the accumulation of organic matter from dilution.Lamellations in shales are easy to be stripped into storage space, and acid water produced during hydrocarbon generation can dissolve some particles to generate new pores. The massive mudstones with high clay content are of poor matrix porosity.Shales with high total organic carbon, developed laminations, relatively good reservoir property, and high brittle mineral content, are the most favorable lithofacies for shale oil exploration and development. It is necessary to conduct investigation on the differences between shale and mudstone reservoirs,to identify resources distribution in shale and mudstone formations, determine the type and standard of"sweet-spot"evaluation parameters,optimize"sweet-spot areas/sections",and adopt effective development technologies, which is of great significance to objectively evaluate the total amount and economy of shale oil resources,as well as the scale of effective exploitation. 展开更多

This paper studies the swelling of highly consolidated mudstones by theoretical considerations and laboratory experiments. A key assumption was made that saturated and uncemented clays behave as heavily dense colloid without direct contacts among solid particles. It leads to an important conclusion that the swelling pressure acting on adsorbed interparticle water-films is equivalent to the effective stress, This so-called clay-colloid concept is validated by various swelling experiments on two kinds of mudstones, the Callovo-Oxfordian argillite in France and the Opalinus clay in Switzerland. In the tests, water adsorption-desorption, swelling pressure and strain were measured on the samples at various suctions and load-controlled conditions. Results suggest that: (1) the mudstones can take up great amounts of water from the humid environment, much more than the water content in the natural and saturated states; (2) the swelling pressure increases with water uptake to high levels of the overburden stresses at the sampling depths of 230 to 500 m, indicating that the adsorbed water-films are capable of carrying the lithostatic stress; and (3) the large amount of water uptake causes a significant expansion of mudstones even under the lithostatic stresses. 展开更多

The Upper Ordovician–Lower Silurian mudstones(including the Wufeng, Guanyinqiao and Longmaxi Formations) in the Sichuan Basin are some of the most important shale gas plays in China. In order to enhance our understanding of the process of formation of organic carbon up to 10%, optical, microscopy and geochemical methods have been used to investigate the petrographic and geochemical characteristics of the formation. Firstly, three mudstone lithofacies were identified based on a wide variety of mudstone laminations. These are:(a) indistinctly laminated mudstone;(b) parallellaminated mudstone; and(c) nonparallel-laminated mudstone. Then, combining with the evidence from depocenter migration, Th/U ratios and total organic carbon, the abundant organo-minerallic fabrics suggest that organic carbon was preferentially deposited and preserved in anoxic, low energy and stagnant water conditions during deposition of the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formations. On the contrary, the Guanyinqiao Formation with poor organic carbon was deposited in oxic and high-energy water conditions. 展开更多

The organic matter distribution and hydrocarbon generation potential as well as element distribution in the lacustrine mudstones of lower Member 3 of Paleogene Shahejie Formation in the Dongying depression, eastern China were investigated using methods of Rock-Eval pyrolysis, inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometer. The results show that most of the samples are high-quality source rocks with high TOC and?S2, and the oil shale samples are excellent source rocks with the TOC and?S2?greater than 5.0% and 20.0 mg/g, respectively. A freshwater depositional?environment in the deep lake for the mudstones was indicated by lower values of biomarker?ratios gammacerane/C30?Hopane and C35Hopane/C34?Hopane. With the lacustrine regression, the ratios Ca/U, Ca/Ba, Ca/Mg, Ca/B, Ca/Li, Ca/Sr and Sr/Ba decrease, while Fe/(Ca + Mg) increases. In the section 3330 - 3370 m with enrichment of oil shale, the organic matter and inorganic elements present strong fluctuation. The quantitative relations among U, U/Th and TOC,?S2, %Ca are divided into two parts at boundary values of 7.0%, 32 mg/g and 11% for TOC,?S2?and %Ca, respectively. 展开更多

Red-bed mudstone, prevalent in southwest China, poses a formidable challenge due to its hydrophilic clay minerals, resulting in expansion, deformation, and cracking upon exposure to moisture. This study addresses uplift deformation disasters in high-speed railways by employing a moisture diffusion-deformation-fracture coupling model based on the finite-discrete element method(FDEM). The model integrates the influence of cracks on moisture diffusion. The investigation into various excavation depths reveals a direct correlation between depth and the formation of tensile cracks at the bottom of the railway cutting. These cracks expedite moisture migration, significantly impacting the temporal and spatial evolution of the moisture field. Additionally, crack expansion dominates hygroscopic deformation, with the lateral coordinate of the crack zone determining peak vertical displacement. Furthermore, key factors influencing deformation in railway cuttings, including the swelling factor and initial moisture content at the bottom of the cutting, are explored. The number of tensile and shear cracks increases with greater excavation depth, particularly concerning shear cracks. Higher swelling factors and initial moisture contents result in an increased total number of cracks, predominantly shear cracks. Numerical calculations provide valuable insights, offering a scientific foundation and directional guidance for the precise prevention, control, prediction, and comprehensive treatment of mudstone-related issues in high-speed railways. 展开更多

Terrigenous clastic sediments are generated by the integration of the Earth surface processes and their deep-time counterparts provide a valuable archive for regional/global climatic, geographic and landscape evolution. It is thus important to read and interpret these deep-time sedimentary records, especially for reconstructing continent climate. Previous studies on the Early Permian sequences from the North China document a dominant control of source chemical weathering on mudstone compositions and its linkage with continent climate conditions. Based on the weathering geochemical data of these mudstones, element mobility during weathering can be ordered as Ca 〉 Na ≥ Mg 〉 Sr 〉 K ≥ Ba 〉 Rb. The weathering regime in the source area is inferred to be supply-limited according to the estimated continent physical erosion rate and regional tectonic evolution, sedimentation in North China. Further exploration of palaeoclimate implication is presented in terms of variation of high-to-low latitudinal temperature gradient across the Early Permian glacial to post-glacial climate transition. 展开更多

Understanding the mechanical properties and multiscale failure mechanism of frozen soft rock is an important prerequisite for the construction safety of tunnels, artificially frozen ground and other infrastructure in cold regions. In this study, the triaxial compression test are performed on mudstone in the weakly cemented soft rock strata in the mining area of western China, and the mechanical characteristics and failure mechanism of weakly cemented mudstone are systematically investigated under the combined action of freezing and loading.Furthermore, the quantitative relationship between the microstructural parameters and the macroscopic strength and deformation parameters is established based on fractal theory. Thus, the failure mechanism of frozen weakly cemented mudstone is revealed on both micro- and macro-scales.The results show that temperature and confining pressure significantly affects the elastic modulus and peak strength of weakly cemented mudstone. With decreasing temperature, the compressive strength increases, while the corresponding peak strain decreases gradually. On the deformation curve, the plastic deformation stage is shortened, and the brittle fracture feature at the post-peak stage is more prominent, and the elastic modulus correspondingly increases with decreasing temperature.Under low-temperature conditions, most of the weakly cemented mudstone undergoes microscopic shear failure along the main fracture surface. The micro-fracture morphology characteristics of weakly cemented mudstone under different temperatures are quantified via the fractal dimension, and an approximately exponential relationship can be obtained among the fractal dimension and the temperature, compressive strength and elastic modulus. 展开更多

A series of undrained triaxial tests was conducted to investigate the effect of crushed mudstone with the immersion-induced degradation on the liquefaction and post-liquefaction properties, and the undrained shearing behavior without precedent cyclic-loading histories of sands containing crushed mudstone. The tested materials with a main particle diameter of 2-0.85 mm were prepared by mixing sands and crushed mudstone to reach the prescribed mudstone content defined by dry mass ranging from 0% to 50%.The mixtures were subjected to immersion under a certain stress level and were subsequently tested. In addition,one-dimensional compression tests were also supplementally performed to visually observe the immersion-induced degradation of crushed mudstone. The test results mainly showed that: (1) the liquefaction resistance, the post-liquefaction undrained strength, and the undrained strength without a precedent cyclic-loading history decreased significantly with increasing mudstone content,M c ,up to 20%;(2) even a small amount of crushed mudstone affected these strengths;(3) the above-mentioned large reductions in the strengths were attributed to the immersion-induced degradation of crushed mudstone;(4) at M_(c) >20%,the liquefaction resistance increased while the significant increase in the undrained static strengths with and without precedent cyclic-loading histories was not observed;and (5) the increase in the liquefaction resistance at M_(c) >20% may have been attributed to both the gradual increase in the plasticity and the formation of the soil aggregates among deteriorated crushed mudstone, while the increase in the specimen density did not play an important role in such behavior. 展开更多

In this study, the axial swelling strain of red-bed mudstone under different vertical stresses are measured by swell-under-load method, and the microstructure of mudstone after hygroscopic swelling is studied by mercury intrusion porosimetry(MIP).The weakening coefficient and Weibull distribution function are introduced into the coupling model of mudstone moisture diffusion-swelling deformation-fracture based on finite-discrete element method(FDEM).The weakening effect of moisture on mudstone's mechanical parameters,as well as the heterogeneity of swelling deformation and stress distribution,is considered. The microcrack behavior and energy evolution of mudstone during hygroscopic swelling deformation under different vertical stresses are studied. The results show that the axial swelling strain of mudstone decreases with increase of the vertical stress. At low vertical stresses, moisture absorption in mudstone leads to formation of cracks caused by hydration-induced expansion.Under high vertical stresses,a muddy sealing zone forms on the mudstone surface, preventing further water infiltration. The simulation results of mudstone swelling deformation also demonstrate that it involves both swelling of the mudstone matrix and swelling caused by crack expansion.Notably, crack expansion plays a dominant role in mudstone swelling. With increasing vertical stress, the cracks in mudstone change from tensile cracks to shear cracks, resulting in a significant reduction in the total number of cracks. While the evolution of mudstone kinetic energy shows similarities under different vertical stresses, the evolution of strain energy varies significantly due to the presence of different types of cracks in the mudstone. The findings provide a theoretical basis for understanding the hygroscopic swelling deformation mechanism of red-bed mudstone at various depths. 展开更多

This study used a range of integrated and complementary experiments to examine porestructure,fluid-shale wetting characteristics, sample size-dependent porosity towards different fluids, and imbibition behavior,as well as the relationships between these properties and the mineralogy of Silurian mudstones in the Central Taurides of Turkey.Working with different sample-sizes,the experiments consisted of helium pycnometry,low-pressure nitrogen physisorption isotherm, mercury intrusion porosimetry, fluid immersion porosimetry, liquid displacement, fluid droplet wettability and contact angle measurements, and spontaneous imbibition of fluids;four fluids with different hydrophilicity were used to assess the characteristics of fluid-shale interaction and its influence on porestructure. Results show that studied mudstones can be grouped into three rock types:siliceous,carbonate-dominated,and mixed mudstones.Siliceous and mixed mudstones have higher porosities,pore-throat diameters, surface areas and tortuosities than the carbonate-dominated mudstones, regardless of sample sizes and fluids used. With low permeabilities and medium pore-throat sizes for the siliceous and mixed mudstones, the wettability and imbibition results show that these mudstones are both oil-wet and moderately-to-high water-wet.In contrast, the carbonate-dominated mudstones exhibit oil-wet characteristics. These results indicate that studied siliceous and mixed mudstones in the Central Taurides seem to have appropriate petrophysical properties in the context of reservoir quality. 展开更多

We have measured the relationships in the laboratorial condition between the at-tenuation in three samples of mudstones and shales as well as two samples of layered sand-stones and the alteration in direction, confining pressure and pore fluid. The relative contributions of different attenuation mechanisms are also discussed. Studies show that the attenuation in dry and saturated samples is strongly related to pressure and direction. The attenuation coefficient of P-wave propagating parallel to bedding (PH ) is less than that of P-wave propagating vertical to bedding (PV ), while the attenuation coefficient of S-wave both propagating and vibrating parallel to bedding (SH ) and that of S-wave propagating vertical to bedding while vibrating parallel to bedding (SV1) are less than that of S-wave propagating parallel to bedding while vibrating verti-cal to bedding (SV ). Under oil saturated conditions, the Biot flow attenuation acts as the domi-nant mechanism for waves propagating parallel to bedding, while the frame anelastic attenuation and squirt flow attenuation seem to play important roles in condition of propagation vertical to bedding. 展开更多

Both of them were dated by the K-Ar method. One kind of rock contains mainly diagenetic illite, and the other contains mixed layer illite/smectite (I/S). Sample separation and alkylamnionium cations treatment were performed first, and K-Ar dating followed. The result shows that fine-grained minerals have younger K-Ar ages and coarse-grained components have older ages. Plots of K-Ar age versus K2O (%) are linear, the range of diagenetic age can be estimated by extrapolation. The reaction results of the above samples are different after alkylamnionium cations treatments. The samples containing mainly illite show a decrease in K2O and an increase in age by 1-25 Ma, suggesting that preferential exchange of young diagenetic clay rather than detrital clay by alkylamnionium cations, therefore the age of diagenetic illite can be calculated directly by the % K2O and radiogenic 40Ar removed. The paper proposes a three-scale binary medium-based constitutive model on the basis of the meso structures and micro components to describe the elasto-plastic mechanical behavior of mudstone samples.Based on the breakage mechanism of geomaterials, mudstone samples are considered as two different materials(bonded and frictional elements)at mesoscales. From micro to meso scales, given the similar but different mineralogy composition and porosity of the bonded and frictional elements at microscale,as well as their separate mechanical characteristics, different homogenization methods are adopted to obtain their respective meso mechanical properties. At the mesoscale,in view of the unique meso structures and the continuous material transformation, the extended self-consistent scheme(SCS)is improved to be adaptable to elasto-plastic composites with varying meso components. With the consideration of the evolution form of the breakage ratio under the external loading being given based on the assumed strength distribution of the meso bonded elements, the mechanical relations between meso and macro scales are established. Finally,on the basis of the mean-field method and combined with the critical mechanical connections between different scales, the micro-meso-macro constitutive model for mudstone samples are proposed. The model validation shows that, with a few model parameters, the proposed model can well reflect the stress and deformation features of mudstone samples with complex micro-components. 展开更多

Swelling geomaterials in northwestern and northeastern China are exposed to both seasonal wettingdrying(DW)and freezing-thawing(FT)processes.The influence of full-process wetting-dryingfreezing-thawing(WDFT)cycles on their hydro-mechanical behaviour has not been well investigated. In this study,a series of swelling and compression tests was conducted on Yanji weathered mudstone subjected to different WD,FT and WDFT processes and the effects of seasonal processes and cyclic number on the swelling strain, compression index, rebound index and hydraulic conductivity were experimentally determined. With the increasing WD,FT and WDFT cycles, the starting time of primary swelling decreased first due to the increasing water infiltration with the appearance of large pores, and then increased because of the decreasing swelling potential of compact aggregates after two cycles. Moreover,as the cyclic number increased, the final swelling strain declined.Upon loading, the specimens after cyclic processes exhibited a smaller compression index at low stresses due to their smaller interparticle distance after swelling, but a larger one owing to the collapse of large pores and cracks at high vertical stresses. After unloading, the rebound index decreased with the increase of cyclic number due to the irreversible collapse of large pores and cracks. The hydraulic conductivity increased with the increasing cyclic number at low vertical stresses(large void ratios). With the further increase of vertical stress, the increase of hydraulic conductivity induced by cyclic processes became indiscernible. Moreover,a comparison among three processes suggested that the WDFT process exerted a more pronounced influence on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of Yanji mudstone than the separate WD or FT process. 展开更多

The slope stability of Ya’an expressway in Sichuan dominated by mudstone strata,is influenced greatly by both the mechanical properties and stressstrain relationship of mudstone. In this paper, the mechanical properties of the Ya’an mudstone samples under triaxial compression conditions were studied, based on an established constitutive model under the framework of breakage mechanics to simulate the mechanical properties of mudstone.Firstly, triaxial compression tests and SEM tests at the confining pressures of 0.5 MPa,1.0 MPa,and 2.0 MPa were carried out on the mudstone samples, and it was found that the mudstone sample undergoes strain softening and dilatancy followed by the volumetric compaction. Then, based on analysis on the breakage mechanism of the above test results,we idealized the mudstone sample as a binary medium material consisting of the bonded elements and frictional elements,of which the bonded elements are composed of solid matrix and pores, and the frictional elements are composed of broken aggregates.During the loading process, the cementation between clay minerals and non-clay minerals in the mudstone sample is first destroyed, leading to the formation of micro-cracks within the particle aggregate, that is,the bonded elements are gradually damaged during the loading process and gradually turned into the frictional elements, and the two jointly bear the external load. The bonded elements are composed of mudstone matrix and pores, which have the cementitious characteristics of mudstone, and the frictional elements are composed of the broken aggregate with the frictional characteristics of the broken particles.Based on the homogenization theory, the constitutive model for the mudstone is established, and the determining method for model parameters is also given. Finally, the results of the triaxial compression tests of the mudstone samples are predicted by the constitutive model proposed here, which can reflect the main mechanical properties of the mudstone samples. 展开更多

The loess landslide along the contact between loess and Neogene red mudstone (NRM) is one of those that have occurred extensively and frequently in loess areas of China. To better understand the mechanism of this type of landslides, a distressed loess slope being subjected to deformation along the loess-NRM contact was comprehensively investigated through approaches of field monitoring and laboratory physical modeling. Field observation and physical modeling shows that the slope deformation will experience two distinct processes: 1) laterally retrogressive and vertically progressive propagation, which was initiated by falling of the slope head; and 2) retrogressively separate mass sliding along the weak basal zone of the loess-NRM contact with minor sliding along the paleosols within the loess. Shear failure of the loess-NRM contact may initiate in the middle section, followed by a progressive propagation towards the slope toe and inner slope. Analysis reveals that the deformation characteristics of the distressed slope are largely constrained by slope topography, the unique structure, physical and mechanical properties of loess and paleosols, and occurrence and nature of the loess-NRM contact. Rainfall has significantly influence on the deformation characteristics of the slope through its interaction with the loess and soil of the loess-NRM contact. Additionally, improper style and intensity of cutting on the slope greatly enhance and accelerate the deformation course of the slope. 展开更多

Reservoir quality varies greatly in the Shahejie Formation in the Dongying Sag. It is essential to analyze the variation and mechanisms of reservoir quality for determining the controlling factors based on cores, porosity measurements and fluid inclusion techniques and so on. The sandstones in the fluvial, (fan) delta-front have the best reservoir quality due to the depositional conditions mechanically controlling the petrology configuration and the primary porosity, and chemically influencing the diagenesis and development of secondary pores. The activity of the boundary faults and the sedimentary facies dominate the variation of reservoir quality in different areas and intervals. The reservoir quality varies with the position of sandstone beds in different vertical models of sandstone and mudstone. This mainly arose from the strong cementation or strong dissolution in the sandstone caused by the diagenesis evolution of adjacent mudstone. With higher oil saturation reservoir quality is better because the hydrocarbon charge favors dissolution and restricts cementation. Diagenesis, depositional conditions and tectonic setting are the key controls of reservoir quality in the Shahejie Formation of the Dongying Sag. 展开更多
