As a kind of widely circulated folk language,two-part allegorical saying(“xiehouyu”)carries the wisdom of the Chinese people and is characterized with humor and vivid imagery.Taking the two English translation versions of A Dream of Red Mansions as examples,this paper analyzes the English translation of two-part allegorical saying based on the core principle of Embodied Cognitive Linguistics(ECL),“Reality-Cognition-Language”,and explores how the English translation of two-part allegorical saying reflects the three dimensions of ECL.

Two Translations of the Judgment of A Dream of Red Mansions from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

A Dream of Red Mansions is an ancient Chinese chapter-length fictional novel and the first of the Four Great Classical Novels of China. The judgments of the major characters within the book have been studied by many experts. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the translation strategies and their effects adopted by different translators for distinct translation purposes by comparing varied translations of the judgments and some of the allusions within them in the two English translations, Yang Xianyi and Hawkes.

Landscape Architecture in Literature Classics——Comparative Analysis of Gardens in A Dream in Red Mansions and The Story of Genji

In the study of two similar literature masterpieces, A Dream in Red Mansions and The Story of Genji, garden planning, plant selection, aesthetic conception, descriptions about gardens, religious elements, architectural decorations and touring ways in both works were comparatively analyzed. Differences in geological conditions, social backgrounds, aesthetic traditions and religious beliefs led to different development trends of gardens in China and Japan. Chinese gardens were largely influenced by humanistic and cultural elements, famous for poetic and artistic conceptions, while Japanese gardens covered by religious colors, and most of its private gardens built with Buddhist preferences just like temple gardens. Chinese gardens valued the application of diversified plant species, while Japanese gardens favored evergreen plants, not flowers. Chinese preferred sightseeing in scenery, but Japanese preferred meditation, which means that, there were different touring ways in two countries. In conclusion, social and cultural differences contributed to the literati garden with profound humanity background in China and the Buddhist garden of religious colors in Japan.

The analysis of grammatical metaphor in the two translations of A Dream of Red Mansion

Despite the various perspectives of the study of the two English translations of A Dream of Red Mansion, very few studies probe into them from the angle of grammatical metaphor. The paper attempts to conduct a qualitative and quantitative study of the two English translations based on the three grammatical metaphors, trying to prove that grammatical metaphor can be used to decipher and unveil some phenomena in translation as well as being used as a criterion to assess the translation.

Emotion,Metaphor and Translation: A Case Study on the English Version of A Dream of Red Mansions

Emotional metaphors abound in the original works and translations of A Dream of Red Mansions. Based on statistical analysis,a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods are utilized from the perspective of cognitive linguistics to study the emotional metaphors appearing in the first 50 chapters of the novel and their corresponding English translations by Hawkes and the Yang couple.To generalize rules in the translation of emotional metaphors,the emotional metaphor of “Qi” is taken as an example by calculating the ratios of each kind of emotional metaphors and the frequencies of translation methods adopted.The findings suggest that when translating emotional metaphors,translators have selected their strategies from cognitive perspectives to achieve equivalence between the source language and the target language despite some challenges and restrictions.It is thus concluded that the emotional metaphor in the novel cannot be translated directly but can be approached through selection of appropriate translation methods including meaning transfer,meaning deviation and metaphor omission.

Both the study of metaphor and translation has taken an empirical turn in the past decade,corpus-based method has provided a practical and objective way for investigating metaphor translation from a comparative and cognitive perspective.The purpose of this paper is to reveal the cognitive differences in the perception of“root”between English and Chinese through a contrastive analysis of the two English translations of a Chinese classic novel—Dream of the Red Mansion,the two translations are completed by a native Chinese speaker and a native English speaker respectively.The study is divided into two parts,the first part is devoted to a contrastive analysis of typical examples selected from the data acquired from the online English-Chinese parallel corpus with the online corpus analysis tool Wmatrix,two deductions have been drawn through the analysis concerning the cognition difference in root perception:(1)the integral perception of root and a plant in Chinese VS the binary cognition in English;(2)the concreteness of“root”metaphor in Chinese VS the abstractness in“root”metaphor application in English.Then the two deductions are further demonstrated through corpus-assisted study of“root”metaphor in large online corpuses.The differences in root metaphor usage as well as the cognitive reasons behind the differences have been investigated with emphasis not only on the dominant conceptual root metaphors,but also the semantic preference of the collocated words of the metaphors.
