AIM: To explore a more accurate quantifying diagnosis method of diabetic macular edema(DME) by displaying detailed 3D morphometry beyond the gold-standard quantification indicator-central retinal thickness(CRT) and apply it in follow-up of DME patients.METHODS: Optical coherence tomography(OCT) scans of 229 eyes from 160 patients were collected. We manually annotated cystoid macular edema(CME), subretinal fluid(SRF) and fovea as ground truths.Deep convolution neural networks(DCNNs) were constructed including U-Net, sASPP, HRNetV2-W48, and HRNetV2-W48+Object-Contextual Representation(OCR) for fluid(CME+SRF) segmentation and fovea detection respectively, based on which the thickness maps of CME, SRF and retina were generated and divided by Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study(ETDRS) grid.RESULTS: In fluid segmentation, with the best DCNN constructed and loss function, the dice similarity coefficients(DSC) of segmentation reached 0.78(CME), 0.82(SRF), and 0.95(retina).In fovea detection, the average deviation between the predicted fovea and the ground truth reached 145.7±117.8 μm.The generated macular edema thickness maps are able to discover center-involved DME by intuitive morphometry and fluid volume, which is ignored by the traditional definition of CRT>250 μm.Thickness maps could also help to discover fluid above or below the fovea center ignored or underestimated by a single OCT B-scan.CONCLUSION: Compared to the traditional unidimensional indicator-CRT, 3D macular edema thickness maps are able to display more intuitive morphometry and detailed statistics of DME, supporting more accurate diagnoses and follow-up of DME patients. 展开更多

Soil thickness, intended as depth to bedrock,is a key input parameter for many environmental models.Nevertheless,it is often difficult to obtain a reliable spatially exhaustive soil thickness map in widearea applications, and existing prediction models have been extensively applied only to test sites with shallow soil depths. This study addresses this limitation by showing the results of an application to a section of Wanzhou County(Three Gorges Reservoir Area,China),where soil thickness varies from 0 to40 m.Two different approaches were used to derive soil thickness maps:a modified version of the geomorphologically indexed soil thickness(GIST)model, purposely customized to better account for the peculiar setting of the test site, and a regression performed with a machine learning algorithm,i.e.,the random forest, combined with the geomorphological parameters of GIST(GIST-RF).Additionally,the errors of the two models were quantified, and validation with geophysical data was carried out.The results showed that the GIST model could not fully contend with the high spatial variability of soil thickness in the study area:the mean absolute error was 10.68 m with the root-mean-square error(RMSE)of 12.61 m,and the frequency distribution residuals showed a tendency toward underestimation. In contrast,GIST-RF returned a better performance with the mean absolute error of 3.52 m and RMSE of 4.56 m.The derived soil thickness map could be considered a critical fundamental input parameter for further analyses. 展开更多

Background:To explore corneal biomechanical changes, identify related factors and determine early indicators of keratoconus(KC)development risk in allergic conjunctivitis(AC)patients. Methods:A total of 50 patients, including 20 eyes without AC and 30 eyes with AC were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent a complete ocular examination, including evaluations of clinical manifestations of AC,corneal tomography and densitometry by Pentacam, corneal biomechanics by Corvis ST,and corneal and epithelial thickness mapping by RTvue optical coherence tomography(OCT).Results:The index of surface variance(ISV),index of vertical asymmetry(IVA),keratoconus index(KI),index of height decentration(IHD)and Belin/Ambrosio enhanced ectasia total deviation index(BAD-D)were significantly higher in the AC group than in the non-allergic conjunctivitis(NAC)group(P<0.05).The tomography and biomechanical index(TBI)was also significantly higher in the AC group(P=0.04).The average epithelial thickness in the 2-7mm annulus was significantly thinner in the AC group than in the NAC group(P<0.05).The average densitometry of the total cornea and the anterior layer were higher in the AC group than in the NAC group(P<0.001).The ISV,IVA,KI,IHD and BAD-D were significantly correlated with the TBI and changes in corneal epithelial thickness in AC patients(P<0.05).The changes in epithelial thickness were closely related to the eye rubbing frequency and allergic sign scores(P<0.05).Conclusions:AC patients should be advised to routinely undergo corneal tomographic and biomechanical measurements, and the TBI could be used as an indicator of KC development risk in AC patients. 展开更多
