We developed a computational methodology for analysis of the best-fit parameter estimates and the information-theoretic assessment of the mathematical models formulated with ODEs. The core element of the methodology is a robust evaluation of the first and second derivatives of the model solution with respect to the model parameter values. The critical issue of the reliable estimation of the derivatives was addressed in the context of inverse problems arising in mathematical immunology. To evaluate the first and second derivatives of the ODE solution with respect to parameters, we implemented the variational equations-, automatic differentiation and complex-step derivative approximation methods. A comprehensive analysis of these approaches to the derivative approximations is presented to understand their advantages and limitations.展开更多

Recently, it has become possible to estimate the specific parameters of individual patients within a reasonable time by employing the information concerning other previous patients as a prior. We discuss the importance of using multiple mathematical methods simultaneously to achieve a solid diagnosis and prognosis in the future practice of personalized medicine.展开更多

Fan parameters estimation is an important task as far as the reliable operation of a fan system is con-cerned. Basically, a fan is mainly consisting of a single phase induction motor and therefore fan system parameters are essentially the electrical parameters e.g. resistances, reactances and some load parameters (fan blades). These parame-ters often change under varying operating conditions and the knowledge of these parameters is necessary to have opti-mum and efficient operation of the system. Therefore, fan system parameters are required to be estimated. Further, fan system parameters estimation is required to ensure the smooth system operation and to avoid any malfunctioning of the system during abnormal working conditions. In this paper, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) approach has been used for parameter estimation of a fan system. The simulated and experimental results are compared.展开更多

Based on model-on-demand tactics, a multiple model approach to modeling for nonlinear systems is presented. The basic idea is to find out, from vast historical system input-output data sets, some data sets matching with the current working point, then to develop a local model using Local Polynomial Fitting (LPF) algorithm. With the change of working points, multiple local models are built, which realize the exact modeling for the global system. By comparing to other methods, the simulation results show good performance for its simple, effective and reliable estimation.展开更多

Epidemiological studies have shown that chronic exposure to high blood level of estrogen is associated with the development of breast cancer. The preventive strategy proposed in this paper is based on the predic-tion of estrogen effects on human living cells. Based on first principle insights, we develop in this work, a mathematical model for this prediction purpose. Dynamic measurements of cell proliferation response to es-trogen stimulation were continuously monitored by a real-time cell electronic sensor (RT-CES) and used in order to estimate the parameters of the model developed.展开更多

The low performance may bring more traffic delay to the whole network of urban road. This paper presents a new method, the joint control of variable speed control and on-ramp metering, which attempts to improve the level of traffic operations on urban expressway. By analyzing traffic flow on urban expressway, an optimum control strategy of variable speed and on-ramp metering is established in the paper.展开更多

The error-correction variable, which represents the short-run discrepancy from the equilibrium state in a cointegrated system, plays an important role in the ECM. It is natural to ask how the error-correction mechanism works, or equivalently, how the short-run discrepancy affects the development of the cointegrated system? This paper examines the effect or local influence on the error-correction variable in an error-correction model. Following the argument of the second-order approach to local influence suggested by reference [5], we develop a diagnostic statistic to examine the local influence on the estimation of the parameter associated with the error-correction variable in an ECM. An empirical example is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed diagnostic. We find that the short-run discre pancy may have strong influence on the estimation of the parameter associated with the error-correction model. It is the error-correction variable that the short-run discrepancies can be incorporated through the error-correction mechanism.展开更多

The concentration and transmittance data were acquired on line throughout the operation.Based on solute mass transfer in both liquid and solid phases, a kinetic model was deduced by assuming that the late period of primary nucleation resembles the initial period of the secondary nucleation. Nucleation and crystal growth stages were identified. Kinetic parameters were estimated piecewise from online experimental data and compared with those in literature. The estimated kinetic parameters for stages without apparent primary nucleation agreed well with those in literature. Further, a simulated concentration curve was also drawn from the estimated kinetic parameters and it matched well with that in experiment.展开更多
