Numerical method is popular in analysing the blast wave propagation and interaction with structures. However, because of the extremely short duration of blast wave and energy trans-mission between different grids, the numerical results are sensitive to the finite element mesh size.Previous numerical simulations show that a mesh size acceptable to one blast scenario might not be proper for another case, even though the difference between the two scenarios is very small, indicating a simple numerical mesh size convergence test might not be enough to guarantee accu-rate numerical results. Therefore, both coarse mesh and fine mesh were used in different blast scenarios to investigate the mesh size effect on numerical results of blast wave propagation and interaction with structures.Based on the numerical results and their comparison with field test re-sults and the design charts in TM5-1300,a numerical modification method was proposed to correct the influence of the mesh size on the simulated results. It can be easily used to improve the accu-racy of the numerical results of blast wave propagation and blast loads on structures. 展开更多

Direct climate responses to dust shortwave and longwave radiative forcing (RF) are studied using the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model Version 3 (CAM3). The simulated RF at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) is-0.45 W m-2 in the solar spectrum and +0.09 W m-2 in the thermal spectrum on a global average. The magnitude of surface RF is larger than the TOA forcing, with global mean shortwave forcing of-1.76 W m-2 and longwave forcing of +0.31 W m-2 . As a result, dust aerosol causes the absorption of 1.1 W m-2 in the atmosphere. The RF of dust aerosol is predicted to lead to a surface cooling of 0.5 K over the Sahara Desert and Arabian Peninsula. In the meantime, the upper troposphere is predicted to become warmer because of the absorption by dust. These changes in temperature lead to a more stable atmosphere, which results in increases in surface humidity. The upward sensible and latent heat fluxes at the surface are reduced, largely balancing the surface energy loss caused by the backscattering and absorption of dust aerosol. Precipitation is predicted to decrease moderately on a global scale. 展开更多

In order to compare the chemical compositions and physical properities of dusts on silicate bacteria S35, the chemical compositions of six kinds of mineral dusts have been analyzed and the changes of pH value, glucose (GLU), electrolyte and Mn, Si, Fe before and after the dusts reacted with silicate bacteria S35 have been measured. The SEM analysis has been used to study the bacterial form and interface action status in the course of reaction between dusts and bacteria. The results show that these mineral dusts have different effects on experiment bacteria. Therefore, it is concluded that the effect of mineral dusts on silicate bacteria has correlation with the chemical compositions and physical properities of dusts. 展开更多

Mesh hernia repair is one of the commonest open techniques of inguinal hernia repair. The main limiting factor in the use of new meshes is the cost.We carried out a prospective randomized double blind study and comprising of a hundred patients with 100 inguinal hernias admitted consecutively for elective surgery, divided into the polypropylene mesh(PPM)group and the mosquito net mesh(MNM)group each containing fifty patients. All cases were completed successfully and results revealed no difference in two groups. The results of the present study,in consistent with the published literature, reveal that the cheap indigenous mosquito mesh, which has similar properties of an imported mesh, can be safely used for tension-free inguinal hernia repair in adults.Further trials with a larger number of patients and longer follow-ups are justified and recommended. 展开更多

The authors examine the equilibrium climatic response to the direct radiative effect (DRE) of mineral dust and sea salt aerosols in a doubled-CO2 climate with two-way coupling of aerosol-climate interactions. In response to the drier and windier conditions, dust emissions increase by 26% in the Sahara Desert and by 18% on the global scale relative to present day.Sea salt emissions increase in high latitudes (>60°) but decrease in middle latitudes (30°-60°) of both hemispheres due to the poleward shift of westerlies, leading to a 3% decrease in global emissions. The burdens of dust and sea salt increase by 31% and 7% respectively, because reductions in rainfall over the tropical oceans increase the lifetime of particles in the warmer climate. The higher aerosol loading in the doubled-CO2 climate reinforces aerosol DRE by -0.2 W m-2,leading to an additional cooling of 0.1℃ at the surface compared with the climatic effects of aerosols in present day.The additional cooling from changes in natural aerosols compensates for up to 15% of the regional warming induced by doubled CO2. 展开更多

An experimental study was carried out on bricks using local materials in order to take into account the waste wood management to protect the environment and to reduce the cost of the habitat. Chips and sawdust were built-in clay bricks in order to study their influence on the compressive strength, Young’s modulus and the speed for soundproofing. Testings in compressive strength were made on the parallelepiped clay bricks, stabilized with different percentages of cement, with incorporation to various percentages of sawdust or wood chips (Mahogany), using a universal press. Young’s modulus was measured from the speed of sound by the ultrasonic method. The results obtained show that the incorporation of mahogany tree chips in the stabilized brick at 8% of cement, does not have much effect on the compressive strength. It was found that the incorporation of chips or sawdust on the clay brick, does not improve the compressive strength. The Young’s modulus decreases with increasing content of sawdust and practically remains constant regardless of the content of chips at 4% and 6% of cement. The clay brick mixed with 8% of mahogany sawdust can be an acoustic barrier. 展开更多

A solar PV panel works with maximum efficiency only when it is operated around its optimum operating point or maximum power point.Unfortunately, the performance of the solar cell is affected by several factors like sun direction, solar irradiance, dust accumulation, module temperature,as well as the load on the system.Dust deposition is one of the most prominent factors that influence the performance of solar panels.Because the solar panel is exposed to the atmosphere, dust will accumulate on its surface, reducing the quantity of sunlight reaching the solar cell and diminishing output. In the proposed work,a detailed investigation of the performance of solar PV modules is carried out under the tropical climatic condition of Chennai,India, where the presence of dust particles is very high. The data corresponding to four different dust samples of various densities at four solar irradiation levels of 220,525,702,and 905 W/m^(2)are collected, and performance analysis is carried out.Based on the analysis carried out,the maximum power loss is found to be 73.51%,66.29%,65.46%,and 61.42%,for coal, sand, brick powder, and chalk dust respectively.Hence,it can be said that coal dust contributes to the maximum power loss among all four dust samples.Due to heat dissipation produced by dust deposition, the performance of solar PV modules is degraded as the temperature rose. 展开更多

Airborne dust is an important constituent in the Martian atmosphere because of its radiative interaction with the atmospheric circulation.Dust size is one crucial factor in determining this effect. In reality dust sizes are varied;however,in numerical modeling of dust processes, dust size has usually been described by choice of a particular size distribution function,or by use of fixed values of effective radius(ER)and effective variance(EV).In this work,we present analytical expressions that have been derived to specify ER and EV for Nbin dust schemes, based on a model-calculated dust mixing ratio.Numerical simulations based on this approach thus would consider the effects of variable ER on the atmospheric radiation and their interaction. Results have revealed some interesting features of the dust distribution parameters, such as seasonal and spatial variation of ER and EV,which are generally consistent with some previous observational and modeling studies.Compared with the usual approach of using a fixed ER,simulation results from the present approach suggest that the variability of ER can have significant effects on the simulated thermal field of the Martian atmosphere. 展开更多

This work proposes a vibrating mesh screen as an alternative to the static mesh screen currently used in conventional flooded-bed dust scrubbers for removing airborne coal mine dust in the continuous mining environment.Fundamental assessments suggest that a vibrating screen may improve the dust collection efficiency of scrubber systems and mitigate the clogging issues associated with the conventional design. To evaluate this hypothesis, computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations were carried out to assess the effects of vibration conditions(i.e.,frequency and amplitude)on the dust particle-mesh interaction and mesh wetting conditions, which are the two decisive factors in determining the dust collection efficiency. The results suggest that the vibrating mesh screen can enhance dust particle collision opportunities on the mesh and increase mesh wetted area as compared to the static mesh screen. The effects of mesh screen aperture, coal dust concentration, and spray nozzle flow rate on the performance of the vibrating mesh are also evaluated. Finally,a simplified three-phase flow simulation including airflow, dust particles, and water droplet spray is performed, and the results reflect a significant improvement of dust collection efficiency in the liquid-coated vibrating mesh screen. 展开更多

Pyrophyllite (H2Al2,Si4 O22, ) dust (P-dust) is a mixture of silica (10-40% ), differentproportions of a luminium oxide (Al2O3 ), and various metal compounds. People with occupa-tions known to be associated with exposure to P-dust include miners, other industrial workersand persons engaged in artistic carving. Currently, little is known about pyrophyllite pneumo-coniosis from P-dust. This study was designed to investigate the hazardous effects of P-dustand to suggest a maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of the dust.This.study included four parts: (i) Occupational epidemiology surveys in 781 workersfrom 1 pyrophyllite mine (PM) and four pyrophyllite carving mills (PCM), with a registra-tion rate of 98 %. (ii) In vitro studies: Six groups of rats were expeed to different levels ofP-dust; the cytotoxicity of P-dust on rat alveolar macrophages (AM) was investigated by de-termining the potassium'content of AM and the activity levels of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)in AM culture fluid. (iii) Mineralogical analysis of P-dust: The contents of silica (SiO2 ), alu-minium (Al), ferrum (Fe), niikel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in hath PM-dust andPCMdust were determined. (iv ) Determination of P-dust MAC: Using the life-talbemethod, an investigation of the hygiene standard of P-dust was carried out in 625 workers ex-POSed to either PM-dust or PCM-dust, uPon whom routine radiographs were Performed. The results suggest that the risk of developing pneumoconiosis from pyrophyllite dust issignificantly higher for PM workers than for PCM workers. The prevalence rate of PCM-dustpneumoconiosis is significantly higher in men than in women. The content of SiO2 and AlO3in the mixture of P-dust is the most important factor in the etiology of pyrophyllitosis. De-pending on the different P-dust MAC values, we suggest that 2 rng/m3 and 4 mg/m' shouldbe considered as the MAC for PM-dust and PCM-dust, respectively, and 3 mg/m' fOr P-dust. We believe that establishing different hygiene standards is more accurate even thoughworkers are exposured to the 'same' dust 展开更多

Fourteen samples of settled dust from two factories processing rice and wheat straw near Shanghai.China, were examined by dilution plating for total bacteria, gram-negative bacteria, thermophilic actinomycetes, and fungi. They were also examined for atlatoxin endotoxin, and potential to stimulate production of human interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and to consume complement. The concentrations of total microorganisms were consistently greater than 10~7 CFU/g and ranged from 10~7 to 10~9 CFU/g.In general, the level of microbial contamination was greater in the hay dust samples than in the rice dust samples, with bacteria being the most numerous microorganisms observed followed by molds, thermophilic actinomycetes, and yeasts. The predominant fungi were species of Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Penicillium.Trichosporon, and Cryplococcus. No significant levels of aflatoxin were observed and the isolates of A.flavus examined lack significant aflatoxigenic potential. The levels of microorganisms in these samples, the types of organisms found, and the inflammatory mediators such as endotoxin suggest that workers exposed to these dusts may be at risk for respiratory illness. 1990 Academic Press.Inc. 展开更多

In a wood processing factory, the measured air concentration of birchen dust was 1. 26 ±0. 41 mg/m3, and the micronucleus frequency of peripheral blood lymphocytes in 83 workersexposed to wood dust was 1. 13 ± 2. 83%, which was significantly higher (P < 0.01 ) thanthat of control group (0. 51 ± 1. 41% ). The number of exposed workers with positive mi-cronucleus test was 9. 6 %, which was higher than that of control group (4. 5 % ), but thedifference was not significant (P >0. 05 ). The micronucleus test in mice treated with waterextracts of unsteamed and unbaked birchen dust showed that the micronucleus frequencies inall treated groups were significantly higher than that of contro group (P < 0. 01 ) and therewas also a doseresponse correlation (r = 0. 96, P < 0. 0005 ). The results of steamed andbaked birchen dust extracts were significantly lower than those of the unsteamed and unbakedones at the same doses (P< 0. 001 ). This suggests that when the birchen dust is steamed atthe temperature of 100℃ for 24h or baked at the temperature of 80℃, its inducing effect inmicronucleus test could be lowered 展开更多

In order to improve the overall resilience of the urban infrastructures, it is required to conduct blast resistant design for important building structures in the city. For complex terrain in the city, it is recommended to determine the blast load on the structures via numerical simulation. Since the mesh size of the numerical model highly depends on the explosion scenario, there is no generally applicable approach for the mesh size selection. An efficient method to determine the mesh size of the numerical model of near-ground detonation based on explosion scenarios is proposed in this study. The effect of mesh size on the propagation of blast wave under different explosive weights was studied, and the correlations between the mesh size effect and the charge weight or the scaled distance was described. Based on the principle of the finite element method and Hopkinson-Cranz scaling law, a mesh size measurement unit related to the explosive weight was proposed as the criterion for determining the mesh size in the numerical simulation. Finally, the applicability of the method proposed in this paper was verified by comparing the results from numerical simulation and the explosion tests and was verified in AUTODYN. 展开更多

The driven-dissipative Langevin dynamics simulation is used to produce a two-dimensional(2D) dense cloud, which is composed of charged dust particles trapped in a quadratic potential. A 2D mesh grid is built to analyze the center-to-wall dust density. It is found that the local dust density in the outer region relative to that of the inner region is more nonuniform, being consistent with the feature of quadratic potential. The dependences of the global dust density on equilibrium temperature, particle size, confinement strength, and confinement shape are investigated. It is found that the particle size, the confinement strength, and the confinement shape strongly affect the global dust density, while the equilibrium temperature plays a minor effect on it. In the direction where there is a stronger confinement, the dust density gradient is bigger. 展开更多

Objective: To compare costs and QoL associated with 2 minimally invasive operations to treat uterovaginal prolapse. Study Design: A decision analytic cost-effectiveness model comparing vaginal mesh hysteropexy to robotic-assisted sacrocolpopexy. Costs were derived from a hospital perspective. QoL estimates focused on: recurrent prolapse;erosion;infection;transfusion;cystotomy;chronic pain;lower urinary tract symptoms;and mortality. Actual procedural costs at our institution were calculated. Costs and quality adjusted life years were examined over 1 year. Results: The costs ($21,853) and QALYs (0.9645) for robotic sacrocolpopexy produced a CE Ratio of $22,657 per QALY. The costs ($14,890) and QALYs (0.9309) for vaginal mesh produced a CE Ratio of $15,995 per QALY. The incremental cost per QALYs for robotic surgery was $207,232. Sensitivity analysis on all utilities, cost estimates, and complication estimates didn’t cross any thresholds. Conclusion: Vaginal mesh was more cost-effective than robotic sacrocolpopexy even when the cost of the robot was not factored. 展开更多

Modeling of instability and collision of nonlinear dust-acoustic(NDA) envelope solitons in strongly coupled dusty plasmas(SCDPs) is theoretically investigated. The SCDPs consists of strongly correlated negatively variable-charged dust grains and weakly correlated Boltzmann electrons and ions. Using the derivative expansion perturbation technique, a nonlinear Schr dinger-type(NLST) equation for describing the propagation of NDA envelope solitons is derived. Moreover, the extended Poincar′e–Lighthill–Kuo(EPLK) method is employed to deduce the analytical phase shifts and the trajectories after the collision of NDA envelope solitons. In detail, the results show that both modulation instability and phase shift after collision of NDA envelope solitons will modify with the increase in the effects of the viscosity, the relaxation time, and the dust charge fluctuation. Crucially, the modeling of dust-acoustic envelope solitons collision, as reported here, is helpful for understanding the propagation of NDA envelope solitons in strongly coupled dusty plasmas. 展开更多

Pure metal-doped(Cu,Zn)Fe2O4 was synthesized from Zn-containing electric arc furnace dust(EAFD)by solid-state reaction using copper salt as additive. The effects of pretreated EAFD-to-Cu2(OH)2CO3·6H2O mass ratio, calcination time, and calcination temperature on the structure and catalytic ability were systematically studied.Under the optimum conditions, the decolorization efficiency and total organic carbon(TOC)removal efficiency of the as-prepared ferrite for treating a Rhodamine B solution were approximately 90.0%and 45.0%,respectively,and the decolorization efficiency remained 83.0%after five recycles, suggesting that the as-prepared(Cu,Zn)Fe2O4 was an efficient heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst with high stability. The high catalytic activity mainly depended on the synergistic effect of iron and copper ions occupying octahedral positions.More importantly, the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure(TCLP)analysis illustrated that the toxic Zncontaining EAFD was transformed into harmless(Cu,Zn)Fe2O4 and that the concentrations of toxic ions in the degraded solution were all lower than the national emission standard(GB/31574-2015),further confirming that the as obtained sample is an environment-friendly heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. 展开更多
