Media Effects on Children's Social and Moral Development: A Theological Moral Study in Africa

In this 21 st century, whether we like it or not, it is very clear that the Intemet, social media, and all ad of the related technology have come to stay. This new technological discovery has brought great and wonderful benefits to our family's lives and relationships. However as it is always the case with any new innovations, it has its own negative side. This paper aims at investigating what actually social media is and how it translates to children, especially African children, as it relates to family and social living. Actually Internet provide benefits in areas such as cognitive and social development, it also presents risks together with opportunities for children's growth and development. It is common today to see children spending great quality of their time using other social websites. It is also evidenced that Interact provide benefits in the area of emotional and intellectual development and at the same time present risk as well as opportunities to children's development in functional and societal challenges. Therefore social media gives the children of the present age the opportunity to enter into global entertainment and communication. As a result of this development, there is now Internet addiction of children. Hence, there is serious need for parents to be aware of the nature of social media sites, their children are using. This is because not all of them are healthy environments for children. Experts such as childhood educators and psychologist even Paediatricians are equipped and so are better hands to assist parents not only to know and understand these websites but to encourage proper use and make them to monitor for potential problems such as cyber-bullying, facebook depression, exposure to inappropriate content and sexting. This paper proffers some recommendation that certainly will assist parents to bring up their children up to be vibrant adult even in this technological era. 展开更多

This article utilizes the theory of mixtures to formulate a general theory of wave propagation with mass-coupling effect in fluid-saturated porous media. An attempt is made to discuss the physical interpretation and the thermodynamic restriction of the coefficients appearing in the equations obtained, by the comparison it is shown that Biot's classical theory and the present one are essentially consistent. Also wave velocities in some special cases are calculated, from which it is concluded that mass-coupling and permeability of media greatly affect wave propagation behavior. 展开更多

Inspired by previous resistance models for porous media, a resistance expression of gas migration within coal seams based on the ideal matchstick geometry, combined with the Darcy equation and the modified Poiseuille equation is proposed. The resistance to gas migration is generally dynamic because of the variations in adsorption swelling and matrix shrinkage. Due to the limitations of experimental conditions,only a theoretical expression of resistance to gas migration in coal is deduced, and the impacts of tortuosity, effective stress and pore pressure on the resistance are then considered. To validate the proposed expression, previous data from other researchers are adopted for the history matching exercise, and the agreement between the two is good. 展开更多

The present study is carried out to see the thermal-diffusion(Dufour) and diffusion-thermo(Soret) effects on the mixed convection boundary layer flow of viscoelastic nanofluid flow over a vertical stretching surface in a porous medium. Optimal homotopy analysis method(OHAM) is best candidate to handle highly nonlinear system of differential equations obtained from boundary layer partial differential equations via appropriate transformations. Graphical illustrations depicting different physical arising parameters against velocity, temperature and concentration distributions with required discussion have also been added. Numerically calculated values of skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are given in the form of table and well argued. It is found that nanofluid velocity increases with increase in mixed convective and viscoelastic parameters but it decreases with the increasing values of porosity parameter. Also, it is observed that Dufour number has opposite behavior on temperature and concentration profiles. 展开更多

A Theoretical Model for the Microwave Emissivity of Rough Sea Surfaces

When sea surface wavelengths are not larger than microwave wavelengths,the microwave emissivity of Gaussian rough sea surfaces can be investigated by applying effective media theory(EMT)of rough surfaces.For one-dimensional Gaussian sea surface,the microwave emissivity model is proposed by EMT,which regards the air-sea rough interface as a new effective medium of isotropic permittivity between the top layer of air and the bottom layer of seawater.The emissivity model is controlled by the root mean square deviation(RMSD)of the rough surface height and the correlation length of the rough surface.Results clearly show that the emissivity increases along with the RMSD increase if the latter is smaller than a critical value.Furthermore,excess emissivities and the brightness temperature increments for a wind-roughened sea surface can be estimated from those of flat surfaces by fitting the RMSD as a function of wind speed.Good agreements are obtained by comparing the results of our model with the satellite data at microwave frequencies of 1.4,6.8,18,21,and 37 GHz,respectively.Moreover,these findings imply that our method can be extended to retrieve the sea surface parameters,such as RMSD and the correlation length of the rough surface,from the satellite data. 展开更多

In this paper, a new type of resonant Brewster filters (RBF) with surface relief structure for the multiple channels is first presented by using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and the S-matrix method. By tuning the depth of homogeneous layer which is under the surface relief structure, the multiple channels phenomenon is obtained. Long range, extremely low sidebands and multiple channels are found when the RBF with surface relief structure is illuminated with Transverse Magnetic incident polarization light near the Brewster angle calculated with the effective media theory of sub wavelength grating. Moreover, the wavelengths of RBF with surface relief structure can be easily shifted by changing the depth of homogeneous layer while its optical properties such as low sideband reflection and narrow band are not spoiled when the depth is changed. Furthermore, the variation of the grating thickness does not effectively change the resonant wavelength of RBF, but have a remarkable effect on its line width, which is very useful for designing such filters with different line widths at desired wavelength. 展开更多

Previous studies on the relationship between exPosure to televised violence and viewers' aggressive behaviours have produced mixed results. Some studies have found significant effect sizes while others have found low and non-significant effect sizes. Television effects scholars have postulated that these mixed results are caused by the inconsistencies of research methodology employed and the inability to control major mediating variables in the studies. The present study is designed with the objectives to overcome these shortcomings. The respondents for this study were 514 students aged between 13 and 18 from 10 schools in the State of Perak, Malaysia. Exploratory data analyses provided evidence that the employed instruments achieved sound psychometric properties. Hypotheses testing suggested that exposure to the Contents of Television Violence (TVCN) did not have a direct relationship with adolescents' aggressive behaviours; instead, Contextual Features of Television Violence (TVCX) totally mediated this relationship. Some other mediating variables then mediated totally and some mediated partially the relationship between TVCX and adolescents' aggressive behaviours. To conclude, this study provides valuable information for parents, the television industry, and the policy makers in recognizing pro-violent and anti-violent features of television violence programmes for Malaysian school-going adolescents. It also provides a new perspective for future studies of television violence in Malaysia. 展开更多

The formation of the spatial solitons in the quadratic nonlinearity x(2) media by cascading second harmonic generation (SHG) in quasi-phase-matched (QPM) sample is studied on the basis of nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). When the solitary wave propagates in the QPM media, it formed optical wave-guides through cascading x(2) effect called self-induced soliton wave-guide. Transverse refractive index distribution of the self-induced soliton wave-guide of fundamental and SHG wave is obtained by cascading process. Analysis of guided-mode of such self-induced soliton wave-guide is first proposed to our knowledge. Because the power needed for forming the spatial solitons in cascading process is much lower than that in Kerr media, this kind of self-induced soliton wave-guide shows potential applications in all-optical signal process. 展开更多
