Compared with conventional cylinder airlift bioreactors(CCABs)that produce coarse bubbles,a novel rectangular dynamic membrane airlift bioreactor(RDMAB)developed in our lab produces fine bubbles to enhance the volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient(k_(L)a)and gas holdup,as well as improve the bioprocess in a bioreactor.In this study,we compared mass transfer,gas holdup,and batch and con-tinuous fermentation for RNA production in CCAB and RDMAB.In addition,unstructured kinetic models for microbial growth,substrate utilization,and RNA formation were established.In batch fermentation,biomass,RNA yield,and substrate utilization in the RDMAB were higher than those in the CCAB,which indicates that dynamic membrane aeration produced a high k_(L)a by fine bubbles;a higher k_(L)a is more bene-ficial to aerobic fermentation.The starting time of continuous fermentation in the RDMAB was 20 h ear-lier than that in the CCAB,which greatly improved the biological process.During continuous fermentation,maintaining the same dissolved oxygen level and a constant dilution rate,the biomass accumulation and RNA concentration in the RDMAB were 9.71% and 11.15% higher than those in the CCAB,respectively.Finally,the dilution rate of RDMAB was 16.7% higher than that of CCAB during con-tinuous fermentation while maintaining the same air aeration.In summary,RDMAB is more suitable for continuous fermentation processes.Developing new aeration and structural geometry in airlift bioreac-tors to enhance k_(L)a and gas holdup is becoming increasingly important to improve bioprocesses in a bioreactor. 展开更多

As a major configuration of membrane elements,multi-channel porous inorganic membrane tubes were studied by means of theoretical analysis and simulation.Configuration optimization of a cylindrical 37-channel porous inorganic membrane tube was studied by increasing membrane filtration area and increasing permeation efficiency of inner channels.An optimal ratio of the channel diameter to the inter-channel distance was proposed so as to increase the total membrane filtration area of the membrane tube.The three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation was conducted to study the cross-flow permeation flow of pure water in the 37-channel ceramic membrane tube.A model combining Navier–Stokes equation with Darcy's law and the porous jump boundary conditions was applied.The relationship between permeation efficiency and channel locations,and the method for increasing the permeation efficiency of inner channels were proposed.Some novel multichannel membrane configurations with more permeate side channels were put forward and evaluated. 展开更多

A functional electrocatalytic membrane reactor(ECMR) was performed for the electrocatalytic oxidation of2,2,3,3-tetrafluoro-l-propanol(TFP) into high value-added sodium 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropionate(STFP),A computational fluid dynamics(CFD) technique was applied to simulate the hydrodynamic distributions along a tubular ECMR so as to provide guidance for the design and optimization of ECMR Two-dimensional simulation with porous media model was employed to predict the properties of fluid dynamics in ECMR.The experimental investigation was carried to confirm the CFD simulation.Results showed that a uniform distribution of permeate velocity along the tubular reactor with short length and large diameter could be obtained.TFP conversion of97.7%,the selectivity to STFP of 99.9%and current efficiency of 40.1%were achieved from the ECMR with a length of 40 mm and an inside diameter of 53 mm.The simulations were in good agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

Mixed liquid of activated sludge (AS) were micro-filtrated by dynamic membrane (DM) made of 6000 mesh kaolin. The results illustrated that the permeate quality and flux with DM filtration were superior to that with direct filtration in treating AS. The experiments of membrane washing showed that DM could abate the internal fouling of membranes efficiently, and the permeate flux of renewed membrane reached 90% of that of new membranes. The denser the mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS) were, the lower the permeate flux was. Increasing of both flow velocity over the membrane surface and trans-membrane pressure (TMP) could lead to some enhancement of permeate flux, while the former approach could be carried out more economically. The feasibility of application of the DM to membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been ascertained. 展开更多

The dynamic load characteristics of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) with a dead-ended anode were studied. In a 70 h experiment, the effects of anode pressure, operating temperature, and relative humidity of the cathode on the performances of the fuel cell were investigated. The obtained results show that, with different relative humidity of the cathode at 65 ℃, dynamic loading has little effect on the performances of fuel cell and the electrochemically active surface area(ECSA). However, the fuel cell operating under dynamic load is unstable when the relative humidity is 50%, and at 50 ℃ with 100% relative humidity, applying a dynamic load has a significant influence on the fuel cell performances. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) showed that both the upstream and middle catalyst layers of the cell were unchanged, whereas the downstream cathode catalyst layer thinned as a response to dynamic load. 展开更多

The formation of a dynamic membrane(DM)was investigated using polyethylene glycol(PEG)(molecular weight of 35000 g/mol,concentration of 1 g/L).Two natural organic matters(NOM),Dongbok Lake NOM(DLNOM)and Suwannee River NOM(SRNOM)were used in the ultrafiltration experiments along with PEG.To evaluate the effects of the DM with PEG on ultrafiltration,various transport experiments were conducted,and the analyses of the NOM in the membrane feed and permeate were performed using high performance size exclusion chromatography,and the effective pore size distribution(effective PSD)and effective molecular weight cut off(effective MWCO)were determined.The advantages of DM formed with PEG can be summarized as follows:(1)PEG interferes with NOM transmission through the ultrafiltration membrane pores by increasing the retention coefficient of NOM in UF membranes,and(2)low removal of NOM by the DM is affected by external factors,such as pressure increases during UF membrane filtration,which decreases the effective PSD and effective MWCO of UF membranes.However,a disadvantage of the DM with PEG was severe flux decline;thus,one must be mindful of both the positive and negative influences of the DM when optimizing the UF performance of the membrane. 展开更多

An ion-imprinted sorbent(IIP)was prepared by using Ni^2+ as template,3-[2(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyl-trimethoxysilane as functional monomer,and silica gel as carrier.The adsorption performance of IIP towards Ni^2+ was investigated.IIP showed a higher adsorption capacity than that of non-imprinted sorbent,and it also exhibited high selectivity for Ni^2+ in the presence of Cu^2+ and Zn^2+ ions.Then,IIP was used to form a dynamic membrane onto the surface of ceramic membrane for treatment of electroplating wastewater containing Ni^2+.Compared with ceramic membrane,IIP dynamic membrane had much higher steady membrane flux,and also rejected Ni^2+ to obtain a lower concentration of Ni2+ in the permeate fluid.Perhaps it is suitable for future practice applications. 展开更多
