Supernumerary tooth in the upper central incisor region is called mesiodens. Mesiodens causes serious complications such as displacement, retarded eruption, and rotation in the adjacent permanent incisors, inducing inhibition of oral development. This report was aimed to provide epidemiology of mesiodens in Japanese children. Using dental record, panoramic radiographs and images of cone-beam computed tomography in 128 non-syndromic child patients, patients’ age at their first visit, gender composition, shape of mesiodens, position of mesiodens, posture of mesiodens, and age distribution of the patients based on each complication were investigated. In addition to the survey, patient age was compared between the groups with and without each complication. Patients’ age ranged 3 - 10 years old. Male-to-female ratio was approximately 3:1. Conical shape (75%) and inverted position (49%) were the most frequent among the patients. Displacement was the commonest complication. Age comparison indicated that patients with displacement or retarded eruption consulted the dentist younger than those without the complications. The present study provided etiology of mesiodens in Japanese children that will contribute to daily clinical practice in the field of pediatric dentistry. 展开更多

This paper reports the case of K.Z, a 15 year-old child received in the Dental Surgery Unit of the Yalgado Ouédraogo Teaching Hospital for consultation for some aesthetic reasons due to dental retentions. On his X-ray, the premolars 25, 34, 35, 44, 45 and the molar 47 were deeply impacted, retained by supernumerary teeth. The treatment consisted in the removal of persistent temporary teeth and supernumerary teeth with poor radicular set, except one premolar. The removal of this premolar located between the roots of tooth 36, was source of major risk;therefore, it was put under clinical supervision. After these extractions, a fixed orthodontic appliance enabled bringing impacted teeth to a functional position. Orthodontic treatment lasted 3 years with a monthly check-up. Ours results are stable after one year of decline. 展开更多

Abnormalities of tooth number in development of the dentition are quite common;however, concomitant hypo-hyperdontia is a rare mixed numeric anomalous condition, especially when it occurs in the same dental arch and in a non-syndromic situation. The presence of this condition specifically in the mandibular anterior region is reported very infrequently. This case report presents the case of a 9 years old non-syndromic male with missing mandibular central incisors and an erupted mandibular mesiodens along with the review of literature. To ensure optimum function and aesthetics, cosmetic recontouring was performed after oral prophylaxis. This is the ninth case reported in the dental literature till date, with the two anomalies manifesting in the anterior region of the mandible. This article also discusses the review of literature of concomitant hypo-hyperdontia. 展开更多
