The Sn to Ca mass ...The effect of Sn, Ca, Al, Si and Zn addition on the compressive strength of cast Mg-Sn-Ca (TX) alloys was studied in the temperature range of 25-250 °C and correlated with the microstructure. The Sn to Ca mass ratio up to 2.5 contributes to the formation of Mg2Ca phase at the grain boundaries and CaMgSn in the matrix, while a ratio of 3 gives only CaMgSn phase mostly in the matrix. While the compressive strength decreases with the increase in temperature, for Sn/Ca up to 2.5, a plateau occurs in 100-175 °C, which is attributed to the strengthening by Mg2Ca. However, for ratio of 3, the strength is lower and decreases more gradually. Mg-3Sn-2Ca (TX32) has the highest strength and the addition of 0.4%Al increases its strength but simultaneous addition of Si lowers the strength. Likewise, the addition of Zn improves its strength but simultaneous addition of Al slightly decreases the strength. The results are correlated with the types of intermetallic phases that form in various alloys.展开更多

The exothermic and endothermic peaks of the thermograms indicating the solid state reaction sequence were identified. The shift of peak temperatures to higher temperatures with increasing heating rates suggests that the solid state reactions are thermally activated and kinetically controlled. The artificial aging behaviour of the alloy was assessed by measuring the variations of hardness with aging time. The fraction of transformation (Y), the rate of transformation (dY/dt), the transformation functionflY), and the kinetic parameters such as activation energy (Q) and frequency factor (k0) of all the solid state reactions in the alloy were determined by analyzing the DSC data, i.e. heat flow involved with the corresponding DSC peaks. It was found that the kinetic parameters of the solid state reactions are in good agreement with the published data.展开更多

Microstructure observations indicated that residual eutectic phases distributed at the grain boundaries were discontinuous and appeared to be small particles in lower Si content alloys; the residual eutectic phases distributed at the grain boundaries were partially continuous and appeared to be films in higher Si content alloys. These phenomena could explain why Si content adversely affected the laser welding performance.展开更多

We collected data from 1 280 plot-level measurements in different reaches of the Yangtze River, China to determine which factors contributed to variability in N requirement in rice. Yield, variety, and cropping system were significantly related to N requirement. The N requirement remained consistent at about 18.6 kg N Mg^(-1)grain as grain yield increased from 7 to 9 Mg ha^(-1), then decreased to 18.1, 16.9, and 15.9 kg N Mg^(-1)grain as yield increased to 9–10, 10–11, and > 11 Mg ha^(-1), respectively. The decreased requirement for N with increasing yield was attributable to declining N concentrations in grain and straw and increased harvest index. Super rice variety had lower N requirement(17.7 kg N Mg^(-1)grain) than ordinary inbred and hybrid varieties(18.5 and 18.3 kg N Mg^(-1)grain, respectively), which was a result of lower grain and straw N concentrations of super rice. The N requirements were 19.2, 17.8, and 17.5 kg N Mg^(-1)grain for early, middle, and late rice cropping systems, respectively. In conclusion, the rice N requirement was affected by multiple factors, including yield, variety, and cropping system, all of which should be considered when planning for optimal N management.展开更多

In conclusion, the rice N requirement was affected by multiple factors, including yield, variety, and cropping system, all of which should be considered when planning for optimal N management.
