Incorporation of Mg-phenolic networks as a protective coating for magnesium alloy to enhance corrosion resistance and osteogenesis in vivo

Magnesium(Mg) and its alloys have been intensively studied to develop the next generation of bone implants recently, but their clinical application is restricted by rapid degradation and unsatisfied osteogenic effect in vivo. A bioactive chemical conversion Mg-phenolic networks complex coating(e EGCG) was stepwise incorporated by epigallocatechin-3-gallate(EGCG) and exogenous Mg^(2+)on Mg-2Zn magnesium alloy. Simplex EGCG induced chemical conversion coating(c EGCG) was set as compare group. The in vitro corrosion behavior of Mg-2Zn alloy, c EGCG and e EGCG was evaluated in SBF using electrochemical(PDP, EIS) and immersion test. The cytocompatibility was investigated with rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells(r BMSCs). Furthermore, the in vivo tests using a rabbit model involved micro computed tomography(Micro-CT) analysis, histological observation, and interface analysis. The results showed that the e EGCG is Mgphenolic multilayer coating incorporated Mg-phenolic networks, which is rougher, more compact and much thicker than c EGCG. The e EGCG highly improved the corrosion resistance of Mg-2Zn alloy, combined with its lower average hemolytic ratios, continuous high scavenging effect ability and relatively moderate contact angle features, resulting in a stable and suitable biological environment, obviously promoted r BMSCs adhesion and proliferation. More importantly, Micro-CT, histological and interface elements distribution evaluations all revealed that the e EGCG effectively inhibited degradation and enhanced bone tissue formation of Mg alloy implants. This study puts forward a promising bioactive chemical conversion coating with Mg-phenolic networks for the application of biodegradable orthopedic implants. 展开更多

The effects of two kinds of heat treatments T4(solution treatment) and T6(aging treatment) on the corrosion behaviors of Mg-3Zn magnesium alloy were studied by electrochemical measurements and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) .It is found that zinc element enriches along grain boundaries to exhibit a network microstructure for both T4-and T6-treated alloy.For T6 treatment,larger MgZn particles form mainly on grain boundary and fine MgZn particles precipitate on matrix.Compared with cast alloy,T4 treatment could decrease the amounts of MgZn particles,and decrease the zinc content of zinc-rich net-segregation.Electrochemical measurements show that T4 treatment increases the corrosion resistance while T6 treatment decreases the corrosion resistance of Mn-3Zn alloy. 展开更多

The microstructure of Mg-8Zn-4Al-1Ca aged alloy was investigated by TEM and HRTEM. The results show that the hardening produced in the Mg-8Zn-4Al-1Ca alloy is considerably higher than that in the Mg-8Zn-4A1 alloy. A dense dispersion of disc-like Ca2Mg6Zn3 precipitates are formed in Mg-8Zn-4Al-1Ca alloy aged at 160 ℃ for 16 h. In addition, the lattice distortions, honeycomb-looking Moir&#233; fringes, edge dislocations and dislocation loop also exist in the microstructure. The precipitates of alloy aged at 160 ℃ for 48 h are coarse disc-like and fine dispersed grainy. When the alloy is subjected to aging at 160 ℃ for 227 h, the microstructure consists of numerous MgZn2 precipitates and Ca2Mg6Zn3 precipitates. All the analyses show that Ca is a particularly effective trace addition in improving the age-hardening and postponing the formation of MgZn2 precipitates in Mg-8Zn-4Al alloy aged at 160 ℃. 展开更多

The microstructures and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-5 Sn-1 Si magnesium alloy modified with trace elements Y,Bi,Sb and Sr were investigated and compared.Results show that the microstructure of the as-cast Mg-5 Sn-1 Si alloy consists ofα-Mg,Mg_(2) Si,Mg_(2) Sn and Mg_(2)(Si_xSn_(1-x))phases.After adding 0.8 wt.%Y,0.3 wt.%Bi,0.9 wt.%Sb and 0.9 wt.%Sr,respectively into the Mg-5 Sn-1 Si magnesium alloy,Mg_(24)Y_(5),Mg_(3) Bi_(2),Mg_(3) Sb_(2) and Mg_(2) Sr phases are precipitated accordingly.Trace elements can refineα-Mg grain and Chinese scriptshaped Mg_(2) Si phase.Refinement efficiency of different trace elements onα-Mg grain and Mg_(2) Si phase is varied.Sr element has the best refinement effect,followed by Sb and Bi,while Y has the least refinement effect.Mg-5 Sn-1 Si-0.9 Sr alloy has higher tensile properties than the other three modified alloys.The refinement mechanism of Y,Bi and Sr elements on Mg-5 Sn-1 Si magnesium alloy can be explained by the growth restriction factors and the solute undercooling.For Mg-5 Sn-1 Si-0.9 Sb alloy,the heterogeneous nuclei of Mg_(3) Sb_(2) phase is the main reason for the refinement of grains and second phases. 展开更多

Microstructure and mechanical behavior of the squeeze-casting and squeeze-casting plus T6 heat-treated Mg-8 Gd-2 Y-0.4 Zr magnesium alloys at room and elevated temperatures were investigated. The experimental results showed that the T6 treated alloy aged at slightly high temperature exhibited good comprehensive strength and ductility. However, the strength of the tested alloys was not sensitive to the change of tensile temperature, i e, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength did not decrease significantly with increasing tensile temperature, while the ductility increased greatly. In addition, the squeeze-casting alloy exhibited predominant intergranular fracture accompanied by minor transgranular rupture, and the tensile fracture mode for the T6 treated alloy had typical transgranular cleavage fracture. 展开更多

研究铜含量对铸造Mg-3Zn-xCu-0.6Zr镁合金时效行为的影响,利用金相显微镜、扫描电镜、透射电镜、显微硬度计和X射线衍射仪确定T6时效处理后Mg-3Zn-xCu-0.6Zr镁合金中主要析出相的形态、数量和种类。结果表明:含Cu的Mg-3Zn-0.6Zr合金经18... 研究铜含量对铸造Mg-3Zn-xCu-0.6Zr镁合金时效行为的影响,利用金相显微镜、扫描电镜、透射电镜、显微硬度计和X射线衍射仪确定T6时效处理后Mg-3Zn-xCu-0.6Zr镁合金中主要析出相的形态、数量和种类。结果表明:含Cu的Mg-3Zn-0.6Zr合金经180℃时效后,主要析出强化相是以其轴线垂直于基面(0001)Mg的板条状β′2-MgZn2,其次是以其轴线平行于基面(0001)Mg的短棒状β-MgZn;晶界共晶组Mg+(Mg2Cu,CuMgZn)基本保持不变;Cu含量越大(w(Cu)<2.0%),析出相的数量越多、分布越弥散,平均晶粒尺寸越小;Cu的加入一方面提高合金的固溶温度,提高固溶处理后合金中的空位浓度,因而显著促进析出相的空位形核和析出密度;另一方面,Cu的加入还能有效促进Zn在镁基体中的扩散,随Cu含量的增加,β′2-MgZn2数量随之增多,Zn的消耗随之增加,β-MgZn相却减少。 展开更多
