Objective: Alexithymia is increasingly recognized in a number of psychiatric disorders, but a possible relationship between alexithymia and adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has not been studied. It is not known if psychostimulants decrease symptoms of both ADHD and alexithymia. This relationship is examined in a small naturalistic and longitudinal study. Participants: Ten consecutive stimulant-naive college students seek assessment and treatment for ADHD during the academic year. Method: Participants completed three self-report instruments quantifying ADHD symptomatology, alexithymia, and psychological mindedness prior to initiation of stimulant pharmacotherapy and after three and six months of medication treatment without formal psychotherapy. Results: ADHD symptoms decreased significantly from baseline to three months and remained low at six months. Decreases in alexithymia and increases in psychological mindedness changed more slowly, with significant differences occurring at six months compared to baseline. Conclusions: This study suggests that stimulant pharmacotherapy in college students with ADHD decreases ADHD symptoms and alexithymia while increasing psychological mindedness. These results have implications for untreated adult ADHD patients seeking psychotherapy. 展开更多

Psychiatry residents, who lack psychological mindedness, struggle to understand the multiple determinants of behavior, or the numerous meanings of a single symptom. This is unfortunate because most psychiatry resident interns feel that they are finally among the group where they belong… like-minded physicians who share a fascination with human nature and a desire to grasp all the nuances and complexities of human behavior. This paper provides a framework for psychiatry departments to train residents along a continuum of psychological mindedness. The authors explain the concept of psychological mindedness, explore the pros and cons of acquiring psychological mindedness, and a scientific basis for its use in general psychiatry. A new model is included to capture any resident’s ability to become psychologically minded, with direction for Program Director’s to possibly develop growth in a resident’s psychological mindedness over four years of training. 展开更多

We introduce diagrams for m-cluster categories which we call "horizontal" and "vertical" mutation fans. These are analogous to the mutation fans(also known as "semi-invariant pictures" or "scattering diagrams") for the standard(m = 1) cluster case, which are dual to the poset of finitely generated torsion classes. The purpose of these diagrams is to visualize mutations and analogues of maximal green sequences in the m-cluster category with special emphasis on the c-vectors(the "brick" labels). 展开更多
