“Strong Liquid”from the Western Ocean:Introduction,Manufacture,and Applications of Nitric Acid in Ming-Qing China(1620s-1780s)

Nitric acid or qiangshui强水(“strong liquid,”from lat.aqua fortis)was introduced to China multiple times by European missionaries during the Ming and Qing dynasties.Xu Guangqi徐光啟(1562-1633)was the first Chinese to record related knowledge from his communication with Johann Schreck(1576-1630).Johann Adam Schall von Bell(1591-1666),Joachim Bouvet(1656-1730),and Matteo Ripa(1682-1746)independently described the substance to the Chinese in their writings,explaining production methods together with different applications such as separating and assaying of gold and silver,etching of iron or copperplates,and manufacturing of thermometers.This paper focuses on newly discovered Chinese materials,mainly from the Investigations of the Earth’s Interior(Kunyu gezhi坤輿格致,1640)by Schall von Bell and his Chinese collaborators,but also from the Record of Essentials of Inception and Completion(Kaicheng jiyao開成紀要)by Xu Guangqi.It analyzes different aspects of knowledge transmission processes including the identification of useful knowledge,the purpose of transmission,the sources of European knowledge,and the applied methods of translation and explanation.From these analyses we can better understand the reasons of their failure or success.

Doctors’Dilemma in Auspicious Pulse Diagnosis Represented in Ming-Qing Fiction

Auspicious pulse diagnosis/pregnancy diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine involves such issues as medical skills,narrative skills,family decency,and ethics.It is an excellent case for the exploration of ethical dilemmas in traditional Chinese medical practice.The early classical medical texts such as Su Wen(Basic Questions)and Ling Shu Jing(Spiritual Pivot Canon)provide a principle-based ethical guide for doctor-patient communication,while popular fiction such as Hong Lou Meng(A Dream of Red Mansions),Yu Mu Xing Xin Bian(Stories:Entertain to Enlighten),and Feng Yue Meng(Courtesans and Opium)in the Ming and Qing dynasties present literary examples for solving ethical dilemmas.This article will analyze these texts from three perspectives.First,the doctors in the text were subject to gender order and other delicate etiquette and customs,therefore were unable to make the diagnosis without embarrassing the patients and jeopardizing family decency.Second,the narrator tends to attribute pregnancy misdiagnosis to three reasons:incomplete patient information,doctors’poor narrative competence,and doctors’corrupted medical ethics.Finally,the Ming-Qing fiction proposes three methods to solve this moral dilemma:clear pulse reading,tactful speech,and taboo challenging.This discussion of moral dilemmas in pregnancy diagnosis in traditional Chinese medical practice can be used as a reference for the localization of narrative medicine.

Though novel reading is a common experience to everybody,little has been researched to help average readers to understand a novel.In practice,there are two ways for them to understand a novel:one is to use literary criticism theories and the other is to refer to professional critics'criticism directly.However,the trouble is that the two methods are either time-consuming or far from convincing.In this paper,an experimental reading method is discussed to help average readers enhance reading experience.It aims at reaching the goal of reading without criticism,which,through making clear the aim of reading,putting main focus on the story only,will help readers to have a better understanding of reading.

Nationality and Universality: Cultural Consciousness and Fusion of Horizons in Mo Yan’s Novels from an Intercultural Perspective

Within the structure of globalisation,the field of world culture faces challenges that are manifested in the decline of national culture and the crisis of homogeneity of world culture.In this case,world culture should be promoted as a viable path to prosperity and development if it is done on the basis of adhering to the higher consciousness of national culture,developing intercultural dialogue,with the intention forming a situation of mutual learning and promoting the fusion of horizons.The Chinese Culture,Qilu genetic code and native writing embody Mo Yan’s conscious adherence to national culture,his thorough knowledge of “Seeking Roots” and “Vanguard”,the fusion of national and international characteristics and the integration of his hometown and other countries.These show his enthusiasm and courage in launching intercultural dialogue and reaching towards the fusion of horizons.How to face cultural challenges under this changing world pattern?The successful experience of Mo Yan’s novels provides us with vivid examples.

Exploring the mechanism of a novel cationic surfactant in bastnaesite flotation via the integration of DFT calculations,in-situ AFM and electrochemistry

Effectively separating bastnaesite from calcium-bearing gangue minerals(particularly calcite)presents a formidable challenge,making the development of efficient collectors crucial.To achieve this,we have designed and synthesized a novel,highly efficient,water-soluble cationic collector,N-dodecylisopropanolamine(NDIA),for use in the bastnaesite-calcite flotation process.Density functional theory(DFT)calculations identified the amine nitrogen atom in NDIA as the site most susceptible to electrophilic attack and electron loss.By introducing an OH group into the traditional collector dodecylamine(DDA)structure,NDIA provided additional adsorption sites,enabling synergistic adsorption on the surface of bastnaesite,thereby significantly enhancing both the floatability and selectivity of these minerals.The recovery of bastnaesite was 76.02%,while the calcite was 1.26%.The NDIA markedly affected the zeta potential of bastnaesite,while its impact on calcite was relatively minor.Detailed Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)results elucidated that the―NH―and―OH groups in NDIA anchored onto the bastnaesite surface through robust electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions,thereby enhancing bastnaesite's affinity for NDIA.Furthermore,in situ atomic force microscopy(AFM)provided conclusive evidence of NDIA aggregation on the bastnaesite surface,improving contact angle and hydrophobicity,and significantly boosting the flotation recovery of bastnaesite.

Exploring Lives of China Ming-Qing Female Poets： Collaboration of the “Ming-Qing Women’s Writings Digital Archive and Database” and the “China Biographical Database”

Based on the “Ming-Qing Women’s Writings （MQWW）, a digital archive and database” project and the “China Biographical Database （CBDB）” project, which have been collaborating since 2008, this paper uses different digital methods to analyse the Ming-Qing women poets’ lives, such as the themes of their poems, their geographical distribution, and their social networks. The aim of this paper is to show researchers various prospects for the integration of digital humanities projects.

Chinese Sources for AfterWards:From Premodern Poetry,Paintings,and Medical Texts to Modern Novels,Film,and Documentaries

This paper focuses on Chinese sources suggested for a narrative medicine(NM)program,called AfterWards.Dr Lauren Small established AfterWards in 2014 and has been coordinating it since out of the Pediatrics Department at Johns Hopkins Medicine.In early 2019,she started giving a series of lectures and workshops about AfterWards to Chinese medical educators and clinicians in Beijing and Shanghai.She created an AfterWards Facilitator’s Guide based on Western-language sources for workshop participants.She also started to organize with Jiang Yuhong(Peking Union Medical College)a workshop for Chinese colleagues to be held at Johns Hopkins Medicine in October 2019.They invited the author to participate.The idea was hatched then to develop Chinese source materials following the AfterWards structure for an updated Facilitator’s Guide that Dr Small had initially written.A typical one-hour AfterWards session consists of a specific five-part structure:a literary text or artwork,an associated theme,discussion topics,a writing exercise,and shared reflection.While the content of the program always changes from session to session,the basic structure remains the same.This paper summarizes the types of Chinese sources and their related narrative-medicine themes that were originally selected for inclusion in the updated AfterWards Facilitator’s Guide intended for Chinese colleagues.These sources about coping with sick family members,aging,and illness ranged from the textual(classical Chinese poems on aging and diagnostic forms for training students)and visual(premodern Chinese paintings and murals of medical encounters)to the fictive(novels)and performative(contemporary Asian-American film in English and Chinese-language film and documentaries).

Functional analysis of the novel mitochondrial tRNA^(Trp)and tRNA^(Ser(AGY))variants associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus

BACKGROUND Mutations in mitochondrial tRNA(mt-tRNA)genes that result in mitochondrial dysfunction play important roles in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM).We previously reported a large Chinese pedigree with maternally inherited T2DM that harbors novel mt-tRNA^(Trp)A5514G and tRNA^(Ser(AGY))C12237T variants,however,the effects of these mt-tRNA variants on T2DM progression are largely unknown.AIM To assess the potential pathogenicity of T2DM-associated m.A5514G and m.C12237T variants at genetic,molecular,and biochemical levels.METHODS Cytoplasmic hybrid(cybrid)cells carrying both m.A5514G and m.C12237T variants,and healthy control cells without these mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA)variants were generated using trans-mitochondrial technology.Mitochondrial features,including mt-tRNA steady-state level,levels of adenosine triphosphate(ATP),mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP),reactive oxygen species(ROS),mtDNA copy number,nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NAD+)/NADH ratio,enzymatic activities of respiratory chain complexes(RCCs),8-hydroxy-deoxyguanine(8-OhdG),malondialdehyde(MDA),and superoxide dismutase(SOD)were examined in cell lines with and without these mt-tRNA variants.RESULTS Compared with control cells,the m.A5514G variant caused an approximately 35%reduction in the steady-state level of mt-tRNA^(Trp)(P<0.0001);however,the m.C12237T variant did not affect the mt-tRNA^(Ser(AGY))steady-state level(P=0.5849).Biochemical analysis revealed that cells with both m.A5514G and m.C12237T variants exhibited more severe mitochondrial dysfunctions and elevated oxidative stress than control cells:ATP,MMP,NAD+/NADH ratio,enzyme activities of RCCs and SOD levels were markedly decreased in mutant cells(P<0.05 for all measures).By contrast,the levels of ROS,8-OhdG and MDA were significantly increased(P<0.05 for all measures),but mtDNA copy number was not affected by m.A5514G and m.C12237T variants(P=0.5942).CONCLUSION The m.A5514G variant impaired mt-tRNA^(Trp)metabolism,which subsequently caused mitochondrial dysfunction.The m.C12237T variant did not alter the steady-state level of mt-tRNA^(Ser(AGY)),indicating that it may be a modifier of the m.A5514G variant.The m.A5514G variant may exacerbate the pathogenesis and progression of T2DM in this Chinese pedigree.

The creators of graphic novels in an attempt to upgrade and restore their ＂ancestors＇＂ cultural status and to eliminate the negative stigma of the medium, by taking advantage of the self-referencing techniques, they try to redefine comics and reframe the field of their social practice. Graphic novels, even more, either allusively or straightforwardly, aquire metatextual quality, by exercising critique on the artistic phenomenon in general and on comics＇ history and theory in particular. Self-referentiality and metatextuality function as ＇internal legitimization apparatuses of the medium and provide graphic novels the right to participate in the theoretical discourse, negotiate or even rearticulate it.
