Earthworms restore & improve soil fertility and significantly boost crop productivity. Earthworms excreta (vermicast) is a nutritive ‘organic fertilizer’ rich in humus, NKP, micronutrients, beneficial soil microbes—‘nitrogenfixing & phosphate solubilizing bacteria’ & ‘actinomycets’ and growth hormones ‘auxins’, ‘gibberlins’ & ‘cytokinins’. Both earthworms and its vermicast & body liquid (vermiwash) are scientifically proving as both ‘growth promoters & protectors’ for crop plants. In our experiments with corn & wheat crops, tomato and eggplants it displayed excellent growth performances in terms of height of plants, color & texture of leaves, appearance of flowers & fruits, seed ears etc. as compared to chemical fertilizers and the conventional compost. There is also less incidences of ‘pest & disease attack’ and ‘reduced demand of water’ for irrigation in plants grown on vermicompost. Presence of live earthworms in soil also makes significant difference in flower and fruit formation in vegetable crops. Composts work as a ‘slowrelease fertilizer’ whereas chemical fertilizers release their nutrients rather quickly in soil and soon get depleted. Significant amount of ‘chemical nitrogen’ is lost from soil due to oxidation in sunlight. However, with application of vermicompost the ‘organic nitro gen’ tends to be released much faster from the excreted ‘humus’ by worms and those mineralised by them and the net overall efficiency of nitrogen (N) is considerably greater than that of chemical fertilizers. Availability of phosphorus (P) is sometimes much greater. Our study sh ows that earthworms and vermicompost can promote growth from 50 to 100% over conventional compost & 30 to 40% over chemical fertilizers besides protecting the soil and the agro ecosystem while producing ‘nutritive and tasty food’ at a much economical cost (at least 50 75% less) as compared to the costly chemical fertilizers.展开更多

We determined whether plasma lipoproteins at baseline and then at 6 weeks after randomization predicted clinical outcome. Methods and results: Cox proportional hazards models were constructed to determine relations between lipoproteins and clinical endpoint events. Baseline LDL cholesterol(LDL-C)did not predict outcome. In contrast, baseline HDL-C predicted outcome with a hazard ratio of 0.986 per mg/dL increment in HDL-C, P< 0.001, indicating 1.4% reduction in risk for each 1 mg/dL increase in HDL-C. Atorvastatin treatment profoundly lowered LDL-C, but had minimal effect on HDL-C. Neither Week 6 LDL-C nor absolute change of LDL-C from baseline by Week 6 had any significant impact on clinical endpoints occurring between Week 6 and Week 16 after randomization. Conclusion Plasma HDL-C, but not LDL-C, measured in the initial stage of ACS predicts the risk of recurrent cardiovascular events over the ensuing 16 weeks. LDL-C reduction does not account for the clinical risk reduction with atorvastatin treatment after ACS. This finding may suggest that the clinical benefit of atorvastatin after ACS is mediated by qualitative changes in the LDL particle and/or by non-lipid(pleiotropic) effects of the drug.展开更多

The purpose of this study was to determine whether reverse left ventricular(LV) remodeling and symptomatic benefit from CRT were sustained at 12 months, and if so, in what proportion of patients this occurred. Methods and Results -Serial Doppler echocardiograms were obtained at baseline and 6 and 12 months after CRT in 228 patients enrolled in the Multicenter InSync Randomized Clinical Evaluation(MIRACLE) trial. Measurements were made of LV end-diastolic(EDV) and end-systolic(ESV) volumes, ejection fraction, LV mass, severity of mitral regurgitation(MR), peak transmitral velocities during early(E wave) and late(A wave) diastolic filling, and myocardial performance index. At both 6 and 12 months, respectively, CRT was associated with reduced LV EDV(P< 0.0001 and P=0.007) and LV ESV(P< 0.0001 and P< 0.0001), improved ejection fraction(P< 0.0001 and P< 0.0001), regression of LV mass(P=0.012 and P< 0.0001), and reduced MR(P< 0.0001 and P< 0.0001). LV filling time, transmitral E/A ratio, and myocardial performance index all improved at 12 months compared with baseline(P< 0.001, P=0.031, and P< 0.0001). Reverse LV remodeling with CRT occurred in more patients at 6 than at 12 months(74%versus 60%, respectively; P< 0.05) and was greater in patients with a nonischemic than an ischemic etiology. Conclusions -Reverse LV remodeling and symptom benefit with CRT are sustained at 12 months in patients with New York Heart Association class III/IV heart failure but occur to a lesser degree in patients with an ischemic versus a nonischemic etiology, most likely owing to the inexorable progression of ischemic disease.展开更多
