Elongated MnS inclusions in rolled non-quenched and tempered steel tend to cause the mechanical anisotropy of steel, deteriorate the mechanical properties and degrade the quality and service life of the steel products. To reveal the mechanisms of morphological transformation of strip-shaped MnS inclusions during isothermal heating, the effects of heat treatment time and temperature on the morphology, number density and size distribution of elongated MnS inclusions were systematically studied and discussed.A diffusion couple experiment was also conducted to clarify the diffusion mode of MnS inclusions. The experimental results showed that with the increase in isothermal heating time(from 0 to 10 h at 1473 K)and temperature(from 1173 to 1573 K for 3.0 h),the number density and average aspect ratio of MnS inclusions generally showed an increase and decrease trend, respectively, while the area fraction remained stable and only slightly fluctuated around 0.4%.In the diffusion couple, after the isothermal heating at 1473 K for 3.0 h,the elements Mn and S in the steel near the steel-MnS interface were very stable without any concentration gradient. The morphology change sequence of the elongated MnS inclusions in the rolled non-quenched and tempered steel during the isothermal heating was strip→cylinderization→spindle→spheroidization.Relationship between the diameter of MnS inclusion and the spacing between two MnS inclusions after splitting, and the fitting goodness of different n values under different experimental time and temperature confirmed that the driving force for the transformation of MnS inclusions during the isothermal heating was surface diffusion, instead of volume diffusion. 展开更多

In combination with theoretical calculations, experiments were conducted to investigate the evolution behavior of nonmetallic inclusions(NMIs)during the manufacture of large-scale heat-resistant steel ingots using 9CrMoCoB heat-resistant steel and CaF_(2)–CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–B_(2)O_(3)electroslag remelting(ESR)-type slag in an 80-t industrial ESR furnace. The main types of NMI in the consumable electrode comprised pure alumina,a multiphase oxide consisting of an Al_(2)O_(3)core and liquid CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–MnO shell, and M_(23)C_(6)carbides with an MnS core. The Al_(2)O_(3)and MnS inclusions had higher precipitation temperatures than the M_(23)C_(6)-type carbide under equilibrium and nonequilibrium solidification processes. Therefore, inclusions can act as nucleation sites for carbide layer precipitation. The ESR process completely removed the liquid CaO–Al_(2)O_(3)–SiO_(2)–MnO oxide and MnS inclusion with a carbide shell, and only the Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions and Al_(2)O_(3)core with a carbide shell occupied the remelted ingot. The M_(23)C_(6)-type carbides in steel were determined as Cr_(23)C_(6)based on the analysis of transmission electron microscopy results. The substitution of Cr with W,Fe,or/and Mo in the Cr_(23)C_(6)lattice caused slight changes in the lattice parameter of the Cr_(23)C_(6)carbide.Therefore,Cr_(21.34)Fe_(1.66)C_(6),(Cr_(19)W_(4)C_(6),Cr_(18.4)Mo_(4.6)C_(6),and Cr_(16)Fe_(5)Mo_(2)C_(6)can match the fraction pattern of Cr_(23)C_(6)carbide.The Al_(2)O_(3)inclusions in the remelted ingot formed due to the reduction of CaO,SiO_(2),and MnO components in the liquid inclusion. The increased Al content in liquid steel or the higher supersaturation degree of Al_(2)O_(3)precipitation in the remelted ingot than that in the electrode can be attributed to the evaporation of CaF_(2)and the increase in CaO content in the ESR-type slag. 展开更多

The morphology and distribution of manganese sulfide(MnS)inclusions have a significant influence on the comprehensive performance, which is an important research field for resulfurized steels.Based on the experiments of non-aqueous electrolyte and scanning electron microscope observation, the fractal theory was employed to study the three-dimensional morphologies of MnS inclusions. The results showed that the edge fractal dimension of MnS inclusions was between 1.59 and 1.88.In addition, similar morphology of MnS inclusions had a close fractal dimension. The MnS edge fractal dimension is highly positively correlated with the morphological parameters. The multifractal spectrums of MnS inclusions on two-dimensional plane of as-cast and as-rolled resulfurized free-cutting steels were calculated. The large-size MnS inclusions belong to large probability subset, while the small-size MnS inclusions belong to small probability subset. The multifractal spectrum can truly and effectively reflect the difference and non-uniformity of distribution of MnS inclusions on 2D plane. On the premise of similar content of MnS,with the refinement of MnS inclusions, the multifractal spectrum width and the multifractal spectrum symmetry parameter were decreased. The multifractal spectrum provides a new method for studying the second phase in materials. 展开更多

In this study, the pitting corrosion behavior of 13Cr4Ni martensitic stainless steel(BASE)and that modified with rare earth(REM)in 0.1 mol/L Na Cl solution were characterized.Techniques such as automatic secondary electron microscope(ASPEX PSEM detector),scanning electron microscope(SEM),transmission electron microscope(TEM),scanning Kelvin probe force microscope(SKP),potentiodynamic and potentiostatic polarizations were employed. The results obtained indicate that BASE steel contains Al_(2)O_(3)/Mn S,Al_(2)O_(3) and Mn S inclusions, while REM steels contain(La,Ce,Cr,Fe)-O and(La,Ce,Cr,Fe)-O-S inclusions.Compared with BASE steel,REM steel is more susceptible to induce the metastable pitting nucleation and repassivation, whereas it restrains the transition from metastable pitting to stable pitting.Adding 0.021%rare earth element to BASE steel can reduce the number and area of inclusions, while that of 0.058%can increase the number and enlarged the size of inclusions, which is also the reason that pitting corrosion resistance of 58 REM steel is slightly lower than that of 21 REM steel. In the process of pitting corrosion induced by Al_(2)O_(3)/Mn S inclusions,Mn S is preferentially anodic dissolved, and also the matrix contacted with Al_(2)O_(3) is subsequently anodic dissolved. For REM steels, anodic dissolution preferentially occurs at the boundary between inclusions and matrix,while(La,Ce,Cr,Fe)-O inclusions chemically dissolve in local acidic environment or are separated from steel matrix. The chemically dissolved substance(La^(3+) and Ce^(3+))of(La,Ce,Cr,Fe)-O inclusions are concentrated in pitting pits, which inhibits its continuous growth. 展开更多

An unqualifed six-cylinder heavy truck crankshaft has been studied to investigate the cause of magnetic particle testing defects on the rod journals.Large-sized long-striped MnS inclusions are regarded as the major cause for the magnetic particle testing failure because they have been detected in situ under the magnetic particle indications.Through the observation of macroscopic structures of the rod journals and corresponding counterweight blocks,it is found that for the 1#and 3#rod journals, the center metal of the original hot-rolled bar has been extruded to the inboard edge of the rod journals and large-sized long-striped MnS inclusions are exposed on the surface after fash removal, leading to the failure of magnetic particle testing. As for the 2#rod journal, the center metal of the original bar has not been extruded to the surface and MnS inclusions on the rod journal surface are small in size, few in number, resulting in passing the magnetic particle testing. If the quality of the hot-rolled bars fuctuates,it is more recommended to apply magnetic particle testing on samples at the center of bars before forging to evaluate the severity of defects caused by the long-striped MnS inclusions for fear of the scrap of the fnal crankshafts. 展开更多
