Dissipative soliton resonance(DSR) was previously studied in separated mode-locked fiber lasers within different dispersion regimes including anomalous, near-zero and normal dispersion. Here we propose a method to study DSR in a single mode-locked laser in these different dispersion regimes. This is achieved by virtue of a waveshaper which can control the laser dispersion readily using software, avoiding the usual tedious cutback method. We find that dispersion has a negligible effect on DSR since the pulse duration keeps constant while dispersion is varied. Moreover, we examine the dynamics of DSR on the parameters of the SA including modulation depth and saturation power, and find that the pulse duration can be changed in a large range when the saturation power is decreased. Our numerical simulations could be important to guide relative experimental studies. 展开更多

The wavelength-tunable rectangular mode-locking operation is demonstrated in an all-fiber laser based on semi- conductor saturable absorber mirror. As the dissipative soliton resonance signature, the pulse duration varies from 5SOps to 2.1 ns as a function o~ the increasing pump power. Correspondingly, the maximum pulse energy is 9.11 n3. Moreover, it is found that the wavelength tunable operation with a range of approximately 10 nm could be obtained by properly adjusting the polarization controllers. The characteristics of the rectangular pulses at different wavelengths are similar to each other. The demonstration of the wavelength tunable rectangular pulses would be beneficial to some applications for many fields such as spectroscopy and sensing research. 展开更多

In this study, two-section mode-locked semiconductor lasers with different numbers of quantum wells and different types of waveguide structures are made. Their ultrashort pulse features are presented. The spectral dynamical behaviors in these lasers are studied in detail. In the simulation part, a two-band compressive-strained quantum well(QW) model is used to study thermally induced band-edge detuning in the amplifier and saturable absorber(SA). A sudden blue shift in laser spectrum is expected by calculating the peak of the net gain. In the experiment part, the sudden blue shift in the emission spectrum is observed in triple QW samples under certain operating conditions but remains absent in single QW samples.Experimental results reveal that blue shift phenomenon is connected with the difference between currents in two sections.Additionally, a threshold current ratio for blue-shift is also demonstrated. 展开更多

The self-assembled growth of InAs/GaAs quantum dots by molecular beam epitaxy is conducted by optimizing several growth parameters, using a one-step interruption method after island formation. The dependence of photoluminescence on areal quantum-dot density is systematically investigated as a function of InAs deposition, growth temperature and arsenic pressure. The results of this investigation along with time-resolved photoluminescence measurements show that the com- bination of a growth temperature of 490℃, with a deposition rate of 0.02 ML/s, under an arsenic pressure of 1×10^-6 Torr (1 Torr = 1.33322×10^2 Pa), provides the best compromise between high density and the photoluminescence of quantum dot structure, with a radiative lifetime of 780 ps. The applicability of this 5-layer quantum dot structure to high-repetition-rate pulsed lasers is demonstrated with the fabrication and characterization of a monolithic InAs/GaAs quantum-dot passively mode-locked laser operating at nearly 1300 nm. Picosecond pulse generation is achieved from a two-section laser, with a 19.7-GHz repetition rate. 展开更多

The optical feedback modulations of a passively mode-locked semiconductor laser with quantum dot structure were investigated in this study. The delay-induced dynamics of QD MLL under the condition of optical feedback have been studied by exploiting a time domain traveling wave(TDTW) model. The conventional TDTW model was improved to make it suitable for studying optical feedback system, especially the system with long external cavity structure. Combing the TDTW model with optical feedback and carrier rate equations, the pulse variation of a single section QD MLL was studied. This new model shows good agreement with the published experimental data. The roundtrip time and local light intensity modulation to the pulse evolution of QD MLL were studied. The results show that when the time for a light to go to and return from external cavity is equal to the integral times of the period of laser pulse without external feedback, resonance will be formed, and the period of pulse sequence is the shortest. The results also show that the stronger the local light intensity modulation is, the shorter the pulse period is. 展开更多

When the pump power is increased up to 5.73 W, stable mode locking is achieved. The central wavelength of the laser spectrum is 1043.2 nm with a pulse duration of 5.0 ps. We report on a novel architecture to suppress the multi-pulse formation in an all-polarization-maintaining figure-9 erbium-doped fiber laser under high pump power. A 2×2 fiber coupler is introduced into the phase-biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror to extract part of intracavity laser power as a laser output, and the dependence of output couple ratio of fiber coupler on the mode-locking state is experimentally investigated. The intracavity nonlinear effect is mitigated by lowering the intracavity laser power, which is conducive to avoiding the multi-pulse formation. In the meantime, the loss-imbalance induced by fiber coupler is helpful in improving the self-starting ability. With the proposed laser structure,the multiple pulse formation can be suppressed and high power single pulse train can be obtained. The laser emits three pulse trains which is convenient for some applications. Finally, the output power values of three ports are 5.3 m W, 51.3 m W,and 13.2 m W, respectively. The total single pulse output power is 69.8 m W, which is more than 10 times the result without OC2. The total slope efficiency is about 10.1%. The repetition rate of three pulse trains is 21.17 MHz, and the pulse widths are 2.8 ps, 2.63 ps, and 6.66 ps, respectively. 展开更多

In two-photon microscopy,low illumination powers on samples and a high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)of the excitation laser are highly desired for alleviating the problems of photobleaching and phototoxicity,as well as providing clean backgrounds for images.However,the high-repetition-rate Ti:sapphire laser and the low-SNR Raman-shift lasers fall short of meeting these demands,especially when used for deep penetrations.Here,we demonstrate a 937-nm laser frequency-doubled from an all-fiber mode-locked laser at 1.8μm with a low repetition rate of∼9 MHz and a high SNR of 74 dB.We showcase two-photon excitations with low illumination powers on multiple types of biological tissues,including fluorescence imaging of mouse brain neurons labeled with green and yellow fluorescence proteins(GFP and YFP),DiI-stained and GFP-labeled blood vessels,Alexa Fluor 488/568-stained mouse kidney,and second-harmonic-generation imaging of the mouse skull,leg,and tail.We achieve a penetration depth in mouse brain tissues up to 620μm with an illumination power as low as∼10 mW,and,even for the DiI dye with an extremely low excitation efficiency of 3.3%,the penetration depth is still up to 530μm,indicating that the low-repetition-rate source works efficiently for a wide range of dyes with a fixed excitation wavelength.The low-repetition-rate and high-SNR excitation source holds great potential for biological investigations,such as in vivo deep-tissue imaging. 展开更多

This study reports a passive mode-locked Thulium-Holmium co-doped fiber laser featuring a figure-9 shaped resonator structure.The laser utilizes a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror(NALM)as the mode-locking device.By increasing pump power,the laser’s output evolution was experimentally observed,showing that bright-dark pulse pairs first split into double pulses and then into a second harmonic state.Additionally,the time intervals between bright and dark pulses and between double pulses increased with higher pump power.The RF spectrum of the bright-dark pulse pairs exhibited envelope modulation,with a modulation frequency approximately equal to the reciprocal of the time interval between bright and dark pulses.When the pump power increased from 0.46 W to 0.72 W,the reciprocal of the modulation frequency showed a linear growth trend.These findings contribute to understanding the evolution patterns of bright-dark pulse pairs in passive mode-locked fiber lasers. 展开更多

Quantum-dot mode-locked lasers have advantages such as high temperature stability,large optical bandwidth,and low power consumption,which make them ideal optical comb sources,especially for wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM)telecommunications,and optical I/O applications.In this work,we demonstrate an O-band quantum dot colliding pulse mode-locked laser(QD-CPML)to generate optical frequency combs with 200 GHz spacing with maximum channels of 12 within 3 dB optical bandwidth.To achieve the high output power of individual comb lines,four channel conditions are implemented at central wavelength of 1310 nm for WDM transmission experiments.Each channel exhibits more than 10 dBm output power with 200 Gb/s PAM-4 and 270 Gb/s PAM-8 modulation capability via thin-film LiNbO_(3) Mach–Zehnder interferometer modulator without the requirement of any optical amplifications.This high-order QD-CPML is an ideal comb source for power-efficient optical interconnects and large bandwidth optical data transmission. 展开更多

Nyquist pulses have wide applications in many areas,from electronics to optics.Mode-locked lasers are ideal platforms to generate such pulses.However,how to generate high-quality Nyquist pulses in mode-locked lasers remains elusive.We address this problem by managing different physical effects in mode-locked fiber lasers through extensive numerical simulations.We find that net dispersion,linear loss,gain and filter shaping can affect the quality of Nyquist pulses significantly.We also demonstrate that Nyquist pulses experience similariton shaping due to the nonlinear attractor effect in the gain medium.Our work may contribute to the design of Nyquist pulse sources and enrich the understanding of pulse shaping dynamics in mode-locked lasers. 展开更多

We report a long-term frequency-stabilized optical frequency comb at 530–1100 nm based on a turnkey Ti:sapphire modelocked laser.With the help of a digital controller,turnkey operation is realized for the Ti:sapphire mode-locked laser.Under optimized design of the laser cavity,the laser can be mode-locked over a month,limited by the observation time.The combination of a fast piezo and a slow one inside the Ti:sapphire mode-locked laser allows us to adjust the cavity length with moderate bandwidth and tuning range,enabling robust locking of the repetition rate(f_(r)) to a hydrogen maser.By combining a fast analog feedback to pump current and a slow digital feedback to an intracavity wedge and the pump power of the Ti:sapphire mode-locked laser,the carrier envelope offset frequency(f_(ceo)) of the comb is stabilized.We extend the continuous frequency-stabilized time of the Ti:sapphire optical frequency comb to five days.The residual jitters of f;and f;are 0.08 m Hz and 2.5 m Hz at 1 s averaging time,respectively,satisfying many applications demanding accuracy and short operation time for optical frequency combs. 展开更多

Pulses, each 457 fs in width and 16.5 nJ in energy, are obtained in a soliton-like regime. With a 5-mm-thick sapphire plate for intracavity dispersion compensation, a compact and stable Kerr-lens mode-locking operation was realised. The oscillator delivered 125-fs pulses at 2347 nm with an average power of 80 m W. Owing to the special polycrystalline structure of the Cr:ZnS crystal, the second to fourth harmonic generation was observed by random quasi-phase-matching. 展开更多

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, an on-chip mode-locked laser diode(OCMLLD) that employs multimode interference reflectors to eliminate the need of facet mirrors to form the cavity. The result is an OCMLLD that does not require cleaved facets to operate, enabling us to locate this OCMLLD at any location within the photonic chip. This OCMLLD provides a simple source of optical pulses that can be inserted within a photonic integrated circuit chip for subsequent photonic signal processing operations within the chip(modulation, optical filtering, pulse rate multiplication, and so on). The device was designed using standardized building blocks of a generic active/passive In P technology platform, fabricated in a multi-project wafer run, and achieved mode-locking operation at its fundamental frequency, given the uncertainty at the design step of the optical length of these mirrors, critical to achieve colliding pulse mode-locked operation. 展开更多

A wavelength-tunable mode-locked quantum dot laser using an InAs/GaAs quantum-dot gain medium and a discrete semiconductor saturable absorber mirror is demonstrated. A dispersion prism, which has lower optical loss and less spectral narrowing than a blazed grating, is used for wavelength selection and tuning. A wavelength tuning range of 45.5 nm (from 1137.3 nm to 1182.8 nm) under 140-mA injection current in the passive mode-locked regime is achieved. The maximum average power of 19 mW is obtained at the 1170.3-nm wavelength, corresponding to the single pulse energy of 36.5 pJ. 展开更多
