Pioneering a New Realm of Human Rights Civilization in the Chinese Path to Modernization——An Overview of the Symposium on“The Chinese Path to Modernization and the Promotion of Free and Comprehensive Human Development”

On October 14,2023,a symposium themed“The Chinese Path to Modernization and the Promotion of Free and Comprehensive Human Development”was held in Changchun,Jilin Province,China.More than fifty experts,scholars,and researchers from national institutions and universities engaged in discussions and exchanges on human rights on the Chinese path to modernization,including the path,practice,knowledge systems,and civilization forms of human rights.This symposium played a significant role in advancing the construction of the disciplinary system,academic system,and discourse system of human rights in China.

The Historical Position and Value Dimensions of Human Rights Civilization

Human beings are the mainstay and the ultimate goal of civilization.The history of human civilization is a continuous struggle to realize the respect,liberation,protection,and development of humanity.Human rights are an achievement of humanity and a symbol of progress,and the human rights civilization is an important component of human civilization.Understanding and interpreting human rights from the perspective of human rights civilization means that human rights are not only a concept or an idea but also a grand historical and long-term social practice.Up to now,the development of human rights civilization has roughly experienced four awakening eras:initialization,revolution,popularization,and globalization.In terms of its value dimensions,it has the characteristics of progressiveness,diversity,commonality,inclusiveness,indivisibility,openness,and so on.The historical position of human rights civilization and the development of its value dimensions have shown to the world that human rights are the common wealth of humanity,and human rights belong to all mankind;human rights are historical,concrete,and developmental;the concept of human rights is constantly evolving,and its connotations and categories are constantly expanding;achieving the free and well-rounded development of every person is the highest value realm of human rights civilization.The Chinese modernization endows Chinese civilization with modern strength and opens up new horizons for human rights civilization.The new pattern of human rights civilization to be created by Chinese modernization not only possesses the common characteristics of human rights civilization but also enjoys Chinese characteristics based on its own national conditions,enriching and developing the diversity of human rights civilization for all mankind.

China’s Western Development Strategy for Modernization Drive

The Western Development Strategy(WDS)is a key aspect of China’s coordinated regional development strategy and effort to build a modern country.The world is undergoing profound changes that have not been witnessed in a century.This paper discusses the WDS’s importance in regards to China’s modernization drive and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.First,this paper identifies the WDS’s mission to improve people’s livelihood in China’s western regions,promote common prosperity for the Eurasian continent,and support the green transition of China’s and Eurasian energy economic and environmental systems,and safeguard ecological security in Asia at large.Second,this paper suggests that the key to the WDS is to reshape the geographical layout of economic activity in the western regions to avoid inefficiency.Specifically,China should develop a compact geographical layout of economic activity in the western regions,introduce a unique competition strategy,as well as find solutions for coordinated regional development based on key river basins.Finally,develop smart internet and inland free ports within the western regions.

Analysis on Modernization and Westernization

The differences between modernization and westernization are am biguous,since they share a dialectical relationship. In addition we can best express these differences from an affirm ative point of view and a negative point of view. Affirm atively,westernization stem s from Europe,and the core of modernization is the western civilization. It was the occident that completed the modernization process,and the progress of the world modernization is the expansion of the occidental modern civilization. Negatively,modernization is a value free concept,and the westernization or Europeanization is a concept with strong value orientation. Although modernization stems from Europe,the occidental civilization is not created by westerners alone. Instead,it comes from the long developm ent and integration of human civilization. The mode of the occidental modernization is not completed yet and needs more explorations and adjustm ents. It seem s that the modernization process is the global expansion of the occidental modern civilization,but as the scale of modernization grows,it will involve more countries with more different characteristics,and it will become further and further from the westernization or Europeanization.

Influence of Chinese and Western Culture on Modern Church Architecture in Yan’an Area

Based on the historical records and field investigation, this paper aims at elaborating the architectural styles, interior space design and architectural landscape of modern church architecture in Yan’an, analyzing the influence of Chinese and western culture on modern church architecture in Yan’an and expounding the historical and cultural value as church architecture, which will play a great role in the protection, inheritance and utilization of modern architecture in Yan’an area.

Developing a modernized economy from the perspective of ecological civilization

The construction of ecological civilization is to firmly grasp the core purpose of harmonious coexistence between human and nature, and realize the sustainable coexistence and development of human and nature. In the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, first, we should put the ecological civilization in a prominent position while building a modernized economy facing the deteriorating ecological environment. Second, we should correctly understand the dialectical relationship between the ecological civilization and the modernized economy. On the one hand, there is a contradictory relationship between the ecological civilization and the modernized economy. On the other hand, they are mutually unified. Therefore,we should put the ecological civilization construction in a prominent position, build a modernized economy under the guidance of the concept of ecological civilization, and alleviate the impact of economic development on the balance of ecosystems. What's more, there are three aspects needed to pay attention to. First, the establishment and improvement of eco-economic system with modern green development should be accelerated to provide a green development impetus for modernized economy. Next, the establishment and improvement of sci-tech innovation system with modern green development should be accelerated to provide scientific and technological support for the modern green economy system. Finally, the establishment and improvement of institutional constraint system with modern green development should be accelerated to provide institutional guarantee for the modernized economy.

Modern Narrative Based on Tradition: The Blending of China's Profound Traditional Culture with the Glorious Modern Chinese Civilization

As an important platform on which culture can be demonstrated, the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics not only showcases to the world China's profound traditional culture, but manifests the brilliant modern Chinese civilization.This fully reflects that Chinese culture is deeply rooted in its tradition and thus obtains and exhibits its strong vitality. In the performances of the opening ceremony, how is the traditional Chinese culture blended with the modern civilization through the programming? What kinds of cultural elements should be selected so as to present the spirit and the essence of the Chinese culture to the world? This paper, through grasping the overall form and scrutinizing meticulously the typical elements in the performances,aims to explore the cultural mechanism included in the large-scale modern cultural activities on the one hand.
