Since the early 20th century,numerous scholars have proposed theories and models describing,interpreting,and suggesting the development paths countries have taken or should take.None of these,however,can fully explain...Since the early 20th century,numerous scholars have proposed theories and models describing,interpreting,and suggesting the development paths countries have taken or should take.None of these,however,can fully explain China’s efforts,mainly through education and citizenship education,to modernize itself and foster a modern citizenry since the late 19th century.This article traces and examines these efforts through a reflective and critical analysis of such public texts as official policy documents,curriculum standards,and related commentaries,and reveals three major findings.First,China’s leaders have advanced different views of and approaches to development and citizenship in response to changing domestic and global contexts.Second,the Chinese state determines China’s development course,defines its national identity and citizenry,and selects its nation-building curricula.Third,the Chinese state’s growing desire for national rejuvenation in an increasingly competitive,globalized world in the 21st century mandates an important education mission that its citizenship education be politically and ideologically open and accommodative,and help students develop global,national and local identities and function as active,responsible citizens of a multileveled,multicultural world.This article furthers academic understanding of how China’s education responds to economic,political,and social demands and shapes students’multiple identities in a global age.展开更多
This study investigated the perceptions of English educators and supervisors in Jeddah Governorate regarding the process of teaching English to elementary students.A survey was conducted using a sample size of 94 educ...This study investigated the perceptions of English educators and supervisors in Jeddah Governorate regarding the process of teaching English to elementary students.A survey was conducted using a sample size of 94 educators and 10 supervisors.The data indicate that respondents considered English instruction at the elementary level essential for expanding kids’perspectives,improving academic performance,and promoting international involvement.The main advantages cited are the development of English language skills and the promotion of early education.Although not as easily noticeable,the disadvantages include potential negative impacts on an individual’s proficiency in Arabic and their sense of national identification.The highlighted challenges encompass insufficient teacher training,student reluctance towards English,limited resources,and school disparities.The proposed techniques focused on prioritizing English instructors’training,ensuring the use of appropriate content,utilizing technology,and promoting awareness of students and educators.The current research found different obstacles in teaching English at elementary stages.To overcome these obstacles,it will be essential to enhance teacher competencies,develop efficient teaching methods,get the backing of stakeholders,assign adequate resources,and carry out continuous evaluations.Further research can also contribute to a better understanding of how early English learning impacts on Arabic identity and proficiency.展开更多
In the middle and late Northern Wei Dynasty,Tuyuhun people gradually entered political field of Central Plains Dynasty,and cultural merging came with the interaction of the crowd.Although Tuyuhun Kingdom located in th...In the middle and late Northern Wei Dynasty,Tuyuhun people gradually entered political field of Central Plains Dynasty,and cultural merging came with the interaction of the crowd.Although Tuyuhun Kingdom located in the northwestern area,Tuyuhun people’s epitaphs whose unearthed places were known so far were all found in the Central Plains,which shows that Tuyuhun was closely linked with the Central Plains Dynasty in politics and culture.Taking epitaph of Tuyuhun Ji as the center,this thesis analyzes the political and cultural phenomenon reflected in the epitaph,on the basis of reorganizing his genealogy and official career.At the same time,combining with unearthed epigraphs of other Tuyuhun people in the Northern Dynasties,the thesis analyzes the sinicization elements in the cognitive identity of tomb owners and their images reflected in inscriptions,and further discusses the transformation of the concepts of national,ethnic,and cultural identity of Tuyuhun people who lived in the Central Plains.展开更多

Cosmopolitans,statists and liberal nationalists disagree over the relevance of regulating substantive inequalities at the global level.This paper aims to resolve the dispute among these three schools of thought.I show...Cosmopolitans,statists and liberal nationalists disagree over the relevance of regulating substantive inequalities at the global level.This paper aims to resolve the dispute among these three schools of thought.I show firstly that cosmopolitans,statists,and liberal nationalists all aim to motivate people to give in support of distributive justice at the global level.However,cosmopolitans lack a substantive theory of how to develop sufficient motivation to give globally.Secondly,the statists’account of the motivation to give is deficient because it fails to recognise the motivational force of a common national identity among people.Thirdly,Miller’s account is more plausible than the statists’but fails to facilitate a dynamic process whereby people’s national identities could be extended to the global level in order to support the cosmopolitan project.This needs to be supplemented by the statists’understanding of democratic process—one which incorporates the principles of Habermas’s communicative action as a mechanism for developing social solidarity among people.I endorse an account that recognises the motivational force of national identity and the possibility of extending it beyond nation state through democratic participation at the global level.展开更多
Although the origins of the First World War lay primarily in Europe,its impact was felt across the world,including in China and in Australia.In the historical literature on Australian involvement in the war,there are ...Although the origins of the First World War lay primarily in Europe,its impact was felt across the world,including in China and in Australia.In the historical literature on Australian involvement in the war,there are two main points of focus,namely the unsuccessful military campaign in Turkey in 1915 and the campaign during the fi nal years of the war on the Western Front in Europe.This paper,however,shifts attention back to the other side of the world,to the Asia-Pacifi c region and to Australia itself.In particular the paper focuses on the ways in which Australia dealt with its“enemy at home”,that is,with Germans living in Australia at the time of the outbreak of war.It is argued that participation in the First World War pulled Australia in two different directions.Firstly,through its role as a belligerent power,Australia became a more signifi cant player in regional and world affairs than it had been before the war.Secondly,Australia adopted a narrower understanding of its national identity,and one which was not well suited to its new international role.展开更多
