Turbulence characteristics of an atmospheric surface layer over a coastal mountain area were investigated under different coordinate frames. Performances of three methods of coordinate rotation: double rotation (DR), triple rotation (TR), and classic planar-fit rotation (PF) were examined in terms of correction of eddy covariance flux. Using the commonly used DR and TR methods, unreasonable rotation angles are encountered at low wind speeds and cause significant run-to-run errors of some turbulence characteristics. The PF method rotates the coordinate system to an ensemble-averaged plane, and shows large tilt error due to an inaccurate fit plane over variable terrain slopes. In this paper, we propose another coordinate rotation scheme. The observational data were separated into two groups according to wind direction. The PF method was adapted to find an ensemble-averaged streamline plane for each group of hourly runs with wind speed exceeding 1.0 m s-1. Then, the coordinate systems were rotated to their respective best- fit planes for all available hourly observations. We call this the PF10 method. The implications of tilt corrections for the turbulence characteristics are discussed with a focus on integral turbulence characteristics, the spectra of wind-velocity components, and sensible heat and momentum fluxes under various atmospheric stabilities. Our results show that the adapted application of PF provides greatly improved estimates of integral turbulence characteristics in complex terrain and maintains data quality. The comparisons of the sensible heat fluxes for four coordinate rotation methods to fluxes before correction indicate that the PF10 scheme is the best to preserve consistency between fluxes. 展开更多

The kinetic energy variations of mean flow and turbulence at three levels in the surface layer were calculated by using eddy covariance data from observations at Jinta oasis in 2005 summer. It is found that when the mean horizontal flow was stronger, the turbulent kinetic energy was increased at all levels, as well as the downward mean wind at the middle level. Since the mean vertical flow on the top and bottom were both negligible at that time, there was a secondary circulation with convergence in the upper half and divergence in the lower half of the column. After consideration of energy conversion, it was found that the interaction between turbulence and the secondary circulation caused the intensification of each other. The interaction reflected positive feedback between turbulence and the vertical shear of the mean flow. Turbulent sensible and latent heat flux anomaly were also analyzed. The results show that in both daytime and at night, when the surface layer turbulence was intensified as a result of strengthened mean flow, the sensible heat flux was decreased while the latent heat flux was increased. Both anomalous fluxes contributed to the cold island effect and the moisture island effect of the oasis. 展开更多

Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to investigate contrasting dynamic characteristics of shear turbulence (ST) and Langmuir circulation (LC) in the surface mixed layer (SML). ST is usually induced by wind forcing in SML. LC can be driven by wave-current interaction that includes the roles of wind, wave and vortex forcing. The LES results show that LC suppresses the horizontal velocity and greatly modifies the downwind velocity profile, but increases the vertical velocity. The strong downweUing jets of LC accelerate and increase the downward transport of energy as compared to ST. The vertical eddy viscosity Km of LC is much larger than that of ST. Strong mixing induced by LC has two locations. They are located in the 26s-36s (Stokes depth scale) and the lower layer of the SML, respectively. Its value and position change periodically with time. In contrast, maximum Km induced by ST is located in the middle depth of the SML. The turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) generated by LC is larger than that by ST. The differences in vertical distributions of TKE and Krn are evident. Therefore, the parameterization of LC cannot be solely based on TKE. For deep SML, the convection of large-scale eddies in LC plays a main role in downward transport of energy and LC can induce stronger velocity shear (S2) near the SML base. In addition, the large-scale eddies and Sz induced by LC is changing all the time, which needs to be fully considered in the parameterization of LC. 展开更多

The phenomena associated with the entrainment of free-stream turbulence (FST) into boundary-layer flows are relevant for a number of subjects. It has been be- lieved that the continuous spectra of the Orr-Sommerfeld (O-S)/Squire equations describe the entrainment process, and thus they are used to specify the inlet condition in simulation of bypass transition. However, Dong and Wu (Dong, M. and Wu, X. On continuous spectra of the Orr-Sommerfeld/Squire equations and entrainment of free-stream vortical disturbances. Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 732, 616-659 (2013)) pointed out that continuous spectra exhibit several non-physical features due to neglecting the non-parallelism. They further proposed a large-Reynolds-number asymptotic approach, and showed that the non-parallelism is a leading-order effect even for the short-wavelength disturbance, for which the response concentrates in the edge layer. In this paper, the asymptotic solution is verified numerically by studying its evolution in incompressible boundary layers. It is found that the numerical results can be accurately predicted by the asymptotic solution, implying that the latter is adequate for moderate Reynolds numbers. By introducing a series of such solutions as the inflow perturbations, the bypass transition is investigated via the direct numerical simulation (DNS). The transition processes, including the evolution of streaks, the amplification of secondary-instability modes, and the emergence of turbulent spots, agree with the experimental observations. 展开更多

This study uses a large eddy simulation (LES) model to investigate the turbulence processes in the ocean surface boundary layer at Zhangzi Island offshore. Field measurements at Zhangzi Island (39°N, 122°E) during July 2009 are used to drive the LES model. The LES results capture a clear diurnal cycle in the oceanic turbulence boundary layer. The process of the heat penetration and heat distribution characteristics are analyzed through the heat flux results from the LES and their differences between two diurnal cycles are discussed as well. Energy balance and other dynamics are investigated which show that the tide-induced shear production is the main source of the turbulence energy that balanced dissipation. Momentum flux near the surface shows better agreement with atmospheric data computed by the eddy correlation method than those computed by bulk formula. 展开更多

As a typical nonlinear wave,forward-leaning waves can be frequently encountered in the near-shore areas, which can impact coastal sediment transport significantly.Hence,it is of significance to describe the characteristics of the boundary layer beneath forward-leaning waves accurately, especially for the turbulent boundary layer. In this work, the linearized turbulent boundary layer model with a linear turbulent viscosity coefficient is applied, and the novel expression of the near-bed orbital velocity that has been worked out by the authors for forward-leaning waves of arbitrary forward-leaning degrees is further used to specify the free stream boundary condition of the bottom boundary layer. Then,a variable transformation is found so as to make the equation of the turbulent boundary layer model be solved analytically through a modified Bessel function.Consequently,an explicit analytical solution of the turbulent boundary layer beneath forward-leaning waves is derived by means of variable separation and variable transformation. The analytical solutions of the velocity profile and bottom shear stress of the turbulent boundary layer beneath forward-leaning waves are verified by comparing the present analytical results with typical experimental data available in the previous literature. 展开更多

This paper is mainly concerned with the turbulence in oscillatory bottom boundary layers over flat or rippled seaheds. Owing to the strong shear and anisotmpy of oscillatory flow, an anisotropic turbulence mathematical model is set up using the finite difference method, and the computational results of the model are verified by comparisons with wellknown experiments. Turbulent energy, dissipation and Reynolds stress can all be computed with this mathematical model, and the development processes of a large coherent vortex structure over a rippled bed, such as main flow separation, coherent vortex formation and curling, coherent vortex ejection and breaking up, are successfully simulated. 展开更多

The multifractality of energy and thermal dissipation of fully developed intermittent turbulence is investigated in the urban canopy layer under unstable conditions by the singularity spectrum for the fractal dimensions of sets of singularities characterizing multifractals. In order to obtain high-order moment properties of smallscale turbulent dissipation in the inertial range, an ultrasonic anemometer with a high sampling frequency of 100 Hz was used. The authors found that the turbulent signal could be singular everywhere. Moreover, the singular exponents of energy and thermal dissipation rates are most frequently encountered at around 0.2, which is significantly smaller than the singular exponents for a wind tunnel at a moderate Reynolds number. The evidence indicates a higher intermittency of turbulence in the urban canopy layer at a high Reynolds number, which is demonstrated by the data with high temporal resolution. Furthermore, the temperature field is more intermittent than the velocity field. In addition, a large amount of samples could be used for verification of the results. 展开更多

This research chooses six typical turbulence models, which are critical to the computing precision, and to evaluating the issue of APGs. Local frictional resistance coefficient is compared between numerical and experimental results. The same comparisons of dimensionless averaged velocity profiles are also performed. It is found that results generated by Wilcox (2006) k-co are most close to the experimental data. The upper mixed layer depth(h)has a significant seasonal variation in the real ocean and the low-order statistics of Langmuir turbulence are dramatically influenced by the upper mixed layer depth. To explore the influence of the upper mixed layer depth on Langmuir turbulence under the condition of the wind and wave equilibrium, the changes of Langmuir turbulence characteristics with the idealized variation of the upper mixed layer depth from very shallow(h=5 m)to deep enough(h=40 m)are studied using a non-hydrostatic large eddy simulation model. The simulation results show that there is a direct entrainment depth induced by Langmuir turbulence(h_(LT))within the thermocline. The normalized depthaveraged vertical velocity variance is smaller and larger than the downwind velocity variance for the ratio of the upper mixed layer to a direct entrainment depth induced by Langmuir turbulence h/h_(LT)<1 and h/h_(LT)>1,respectively,indicating that turbulence characteristics have the essential change(i.e.,depth-averaged vertical velocity variance(DAVV)DADV for Langmuir turbulence)between h/h_(LT)<1 and h/h_(LT)>1.The rate of change of the normalized depth-averaged low-order statistics for h/h_(LT)<1 is much larger than that for h/h_(LT)>1.The reason is that the downward pressure perturbation induced by Langmuir cells is strongly inhibited by the upward reactive force of the strong stratified thermocline for h/h_(LT)<1 and the eff ect of upward reactive force on the downward pressure perturbation becomes weak for h/h_(LT)>1.Hence,the upper mixed layer depth has significant influences on Langmuir turbulence characteristics. 展开更多

Langmuir turbulence is a complex turbulent process in the ocean upper mixed layer. The Coriolis parameter has an important effect on Langmuir turbulence through the Coriolis-Stokes force and Ekman effect, however, this effect on Langmuir turbulence has not been systematically investigated. Here, the impact of the Coriolis parameter on Langmuir turbulence with a change of latitude(LAT)from 20°N to 80°N is studied using a non-hydrostatic large eddy simulation model under an ideal condition. The results show that the ratio of the upper mixed layer depth to Ekman depth scale(RME)RME=0.266(LAT=50°N)is a key value(latitude)for the modulation effect of the Coriolis parameter on the mean and turbulent statistics of Langmuir turbulence. It is found that the rate of change of the sea surface temperature, upper mixed layer depth, entrainment flux, crosswind velocity, downwind vertical momentum flux, and turbulent kinetic energy budget terms associated with Langmuir turbulence are more evident at RME≤0.266(LAT≤50°N)than at RME≥0.266(LAT≥50°N).However,the rate of change of the depth-averaged crosswind vertical momentum flux does not have a clear variation between RME≤0.266 and RME≥0.266.The complex changes of both Langmuir turbulence characteristics and influence of Langmuir turbulence on the upper mixed layer with latitude presented here may provide more information for further improving Langmuir turbulence parameterization. 展开更多

Receptivity is the initial stage and plays a crucial role in the entire transition process. The previous studies of receptivity focus on external disturbances such as sound waves and vortices in the free stream, whereas those on the leading-edge receptivity to the three-dimensional free-stream turbulence (FST), which is more general in the nature, are rarely reported. In consideration of this, this work is devoted to investigating the receptivity process of three-dimensional Tollmien-Schlichting (T-S) wave packets excited by the three-dimensional FST in a flat-plate boundary layer numerically. The relations between the leading-edge receptivity and the turbulence intensity are established, and the influence of the FST directions on the propagation directions and group velocities of the excited T-S wave packets is studied. Moreover, the leading-edge receptivity to the anisotropic FST is also studied. This parametric investigation can contribute to the prediction of laminar-turbulent transition. 展开更多

The turbulent fluid and particle interaction in the turbulent boundary layer for cross how over a cylinder has been experimentally studied. A phase-Doppler anemometer was used to measure the mean and fluctuating velocities of both phases. Two size ranges of particles (30 mu m similar to 60 mu m and 80 mu m similar to 150 mu m) at certain concentrations were used for considering the effects of particle sizes on the mean velocity profiles and on the turbulent intensity levels. The measurements clearly demonstrated that the larger particles damped fluid turbulence. For the smaller particles, this damping effect was less noticeable. The measurements further showed a delay in the separation point for two phase turbulent cross how over a cylinder. 展开更多

Turbulence in the nocturnal boundary layer(NBL)is still not well characterized, especially over complex underlying surfaces.Herein, gradient tower data and eddy covariance data collected by the Beijing 325-m tower were used to better understand the differentiating characteristics of turbulence regimes and vertical turbulence structure of urban the NBL.As for heights above the urban canopy layer(UCL),the relationship between turbulence velocity scale(VTKE)and wind speed(V)was consistent with the“HOckey-Stick”(HOST)theory proposed for a relatively flat area.Four regimes have been identified according to urban nocturnal stable boundary layer.Regime 1 occurs where local shear plays a leading role for weak turbulence under the constraint that the wind speed V<VT(threshold wind speed).Regime 2 is determined by the existence of strong turbulence that occurs when V>VT and is mainly driven by bulk shear.Regime 3 is identified by the existence of moderate turbulence when upside-down turbulence sporadic bursts occur in the presence of otherwise weak turbulence.Regime 4 is identified as buoyancy turbulence, when V>VT,and the turbulence regime is affected by a combination of local wind shear, bulk shear and buoyancy turbulence. The turbulence activities demonstrated a weak thermal stratification dependency in regime 1,for which within the UCL,the turbulence intensity was strongly affected by local wind shear when V<VT.This study further showed typical examples of different stable boundary layers and the variations between turbulence regimes by analyzing the evolution of wind vectors.Partly because of the influence of large-scale motions, the power spectral density of vertical velocity for upsidedown structure showed an increase at low frequencies. The upside-down structures were also characterized by the highest frequency of the stable stratifications in the higher layer. 展开更多

From April 24 to October 25, 2011, an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV) continually running for 185 d was mounted on the smooth ridge at the edge of Monterey Canyon to observe turbulence in the bottom boundary layer. The ADV was set at 1.4 m above the bed bottom, continuously run for 1 min with a 2-minute interval with sampling frequency 64 Hz. The long-time continual observation is significant to reveal variations of turbulent characteristics and show some differences from the classic traditional tur- bulent theory. Eliminating the noise by the 'Phase-Space Thresholding Method', rotating the coordinate and low-pass filtering the velocity were applied for data processing. This paper was mainly to estimate the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate by the iner- tial dissipation method, friction velocity, drag coefficient and significant periods of the turbulent characteristics with the ADV data. The results show that there is a strong, rotating bottom flow up to 0.398 ms-1 with predominantly semidiumal period and less sig- nificantly diurnal and semilunar period. The turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ranges from 1.09× 10-8W kg-1 to 6.62× 10-8W kg-1, which can vary with 2 or 3 orders of magnitude in one day. The daily averaged variations of friction velocity and drag coeffi- cient are 6.50×10-3-2.32× 10-2ms-1 and 6.30×10-3-4.36×10-2, respectively. All the characteristics have a remarkable semidiurnal period. In the bottom boundary layer with a rotating tide, the parameterized coefficients to describe ε-μ. and ε-Et relationships are much smaller than the traditional value. 展开更多

This work is an attempt to diagnose the turbu-lence field of the equatorial Atlantic Ocean dur-ing the dry period when the mixed layer is more highly developed using the General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM). A relaxation scheme assimilates the vertical profiles of in situ ob-servations (current velocity, sea temperature and salinity) during simulations. In the absence of direct turbulence observations and modeling studies of the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, the results are compared qualitatively to observed and simulated results for the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Similarities are noted between the At-lantic simulation and previous studies per-formed in the Pacific Ocean. The mechanism of nocturnal turbulence production, namely deep- cycle turbulence, is well captured by GOTM si-mulations. This deep nocturnal turbulence ap-pears rather suddenly during the night in the simulations and consequently seems to be un-related to surface wind and radiation forcing. 展开更多
