Tuning performance of the nanowires for negative refraction was analyzed by use of varying refractive index of filling materials among the metallic nanowires. Computational numerical simulation and analyses were carried out. The performance of negative refraction was compared by optimization of the structures. By optimizing the nanowires radius, E-field intensity was calculated in the case that the refractive index of filling material is changeable. The calculated refraction angles illustrate a relationship between the refraction angle and the index of filling material. Our computational results demonstrate that effective value of the negative refractive index strongly depends on the refractive index of the filling material when other parameters are fixed.展开更多

For this structure we have used a new approach, instead of applying light perpendicularly incident. We apply horizontally incident input waves. A model of SRR is used to understand the behavior and its affects. We calculate the S-parameters using S-parameter analysis and the results for transmission, refractive index, permeability and permittivity of the structure is induced. The negative refractive index is found to be significantly dependent upon the width of the continuous wire as well as gap between resonators. Moreover, we study the effect of lattice constant on the electromagnetic response of the structure. It is expected that this work will provide useful information for design and fabrication of metamaterials with negative refractive index for in-plane applications.展开更多

We apply the boundary conditions and impose the condition of negative effective permeability of the ferrite slab to derive the dispersion relation related to the proposed structure. The NIM permittivity and permeability are not constant and depend on the operating frequency. The dispersion properties of the nonlinear electromagnetic surface waves (NEM) are analyzed and the associated propagation index is calculated. Results show that the dispersion could be tuned and controlled by selecting the NIM film thickness and the film-cover interface nonlinearity. The proposed structure is supporting unusual types of NEM surface waves having a non-reciprocal behavior widely used in designing optoelectronic devices.展开更多

The density matrix method is utilized in view of the rotating-wave approximation and the effect of a local field in dense gas. The numerical simulation result shows that the negative permittivity and the negative permeability of the medium can be achieved simultaneously (i.e. the left handedness) in a wider frequency band under appropriate parameter conditions. Furthermore, when analysing the dispersion property of the left-handed material, we can find that the probe beam propagation can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal, or vice versa via changing the detuning of the probe field.展开更多

The discussions, for the past century aimed at the nature of photon inside a media having dispersion in the refraction property, other than free space. What about its nature if the space be of refractive index which is negative, is discussed in this paper. We call mechanical momentum, wave-momentum, and try to match our present theories with intriguing property of this ‘photon’ or pulse carrying EM energy packet, and more so we try to find its property energy, momentum inside a media a positive refractive media, and if the media show a negative refractive index behavior, then these queries are profound, and suitable explanations to these classical concepts of corpuscular-wave nature of photon inside these media are quest for the scientists dealing with these materials having negative index of refraction. Here some of this counterintuitive nature of corpuscular-wave nature of photon inside negative indexed material is brought out, with possible ‘new definition’ of its ‘wave-momentum’, the concept of ‘reactive energy’ inside negative indexed material, along with possible ‘new wave equation’. These definitions and expressions of ‘wave-momentum’ and ‘reactive energy’ pertaining to negative indexed material are new and discussed and derived by classical means.展开更多

A commercial finite element software HFSS and S-parameter retrieval method were used to determine the effective constitutive parameters of the metamaterials, and topology optimization technique was introduced to design the microstructure configurations of the materials with desired electromagnetic characteristics. The material considered was a periodic array of dielectric substrates attached with metal film pieces. By controlling the arrangements of the metal film pieces in the design domain, the potential microstructure with desired electromagnetic characteristics can be obtained finally. Two different LHMs were obtained with maximum bandwidth of negative refraction, and the experimental results show that negative refractive indices appear while the metamaterials have simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability. Topology optimization technique is found to be an effective tool for configuration design of LHMs.展开更多

The samples with linear defect are designed by removing one layer of split ring resonators (SRRs). It is shown that the left-handed transmission peaks have a distinct transform with the relative deviation of the SRRs centre from the wire centre 8, from a single left-handed peak, double left-handed peaks with different magnitude to no transmission peak, i.e. left-handed properties of metamaterials disappear. Numerical simulation shows that the change of 8 makes the effective permeability shift at a frequency range, where stopband occurs. It is thought that the stopband in left-handed passband is due to the symmetry breaking between SRRs and wires in the metamaterials.展开更多

Negative real values of both permeability (μ) and permittivity (ε) with extremely low imaginary values for visible light is obtained by applying Coupled dipole approximation. All-Angle negative refraction is obtained by applying surface plasmon polariton excitation (SPPE) in DN-MSPC operating in a dispersion regime with anti-parallel refracted wave vector and Poynting vector. Index matched to the incident light and compensated losses due the gain assistance leads the light amplification in the designed structure. Furthermore, extremely high left-handed transmission efficiency (〉99%) is also investigated. Demonstration of near and far-field resonance patterns reveal the nano-photonic device applications potential i.e. highly directional optical nanoantenna, filter, etc.展开更多

This paper elucidates antenna parameter optimization using 2 Segment Labyrinth metamaterial embedded in antenna substrate at high frequency (THz). Ansoft HFSS has been used to design and analyse the RMPA (rectangular microstrip patch antenna) with design frequency 9.55 THz and operating range of 8.55 THz to 10.55 THz having RT Duroid (εr = 2.33) as substrate material. Magnetic properties of labyrinth resonator have been used to mathematically demonstrate the negative refraction. Nicolson Ross Wier (NRW) method has been used to retrieve the material parameters from transmission and reflection coefficient. Upon incorporation, bandwidth widens to around 4% and VSWR improves by approx 1.5%.展开更多

The band structures of E-polarization mode and H-polarization mode can be adjusted by changing the parameters of materials. Thus the two modes with different polarizations have the same negative refraction index -1 for the same frequency. The results are demonstrated by numerical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method.展开更多

These materials were first investigated theoretically by Veselago in 1946 and were confirmed experimentally by Shelby, Smith, and Schultz in2001. Mathematically, the study of negative index materials faces two difficulties. Firstly, the equations describing the phenomenon have sign changing coefficients, hence the ellipticity and the compactness are lost in general. Secondly, the localized resonance, i.e.,the field explodes in some regions and remains bounded in some others as the loss goes to 0, might appear. In this survey, the author discusses recent mathematics progress in understanding properties of negative index materials and their applications. The topics are reflecting complementary media, superlensing and cloaking by using complementary media, cloaking a source via anomalous localized resonance, the limiting absorption principle and the well-posedness of the Helmholtz equation with sign changing coefficients.展开更多

The results of the study show that as the refractive index and thickness of the defect layer increase, the frequency of the defect mode decreases. In addition, the study shows that the frequency of the defect mode is sensitive to the incidence angle, polarization, and physical properties of the defect layer, but it is insensitive to the small lattice loss factor. The peak of the defect mode is very sensitive to the loss factor, incidence angle, polarization, refractive index, and thickness of the defect layer. This study also shows that the peak and the width of the defect mode are affected by the numbers of the lattice period and the loss factor. The results can lead to designing new types of narrow filter structures and other optical devices.展开更多
