Internet of Things(IoT)is vulnerable to data-tampering(DT)attacks.Due to resource limitations, many anomaly detection systems(ADSs)for IoT have high false positive rates when detecting DT attacks. This leads to the misreporting of normal data, which will impact the normal operation of IoT.To mitigate the impact caused by the high false positive rate of ADS,this paper proposes an ADS management scheme for clustered IoT.First,we model the data transmission and anomaly detection in clustered IoT.Then, the operation strategy of the clustered IoT is formulated as the running probabilities of all ADSs deployed on every IoT device. In the presence of a high false positive rate in ADSs,to deal with the trade-off between the security and availability of data,we develop a linear programming model referred to as a security trade-off(ST)model.Next,we develop an analysis framework for the ST model, and solve the ST model on an IoT simulation platform.Last,we reveal the effect of some factors on the maximum combined detection rate through theoretical analysis.Simulations show that the ADS management scheme can mitigate the data unavailability loss caused by the high false positive rates in ADS. 展开更多

In order to enhance the accuracy of Air Traffic Control(ATC)cybersecurity attack detection,in this paper,a new clustering detection method is designed for air traffic control network security attacks. The feature set for ATC cybersecurity attacks is constructed by setting the feature states, adding recursive features, and determining the feature criticality. The expected information gain and entropy of the feature data are computed to determine the information gain of the feature data and reduce the interference of similar feature data.An autoencoder is introduced into the AI(artificial intelligence)algorithm to encode and decode the characteristics of ATC network security attack behavior to reduce the dimensionality of the ATC network security attack behavior data.Based on the above processing,an unsupervised learning algorithm for clustering detection of ATC network security attacks is designed.First, determine the distance between the clustering clusters of ATC network security attack behavior characteristics, calculate the clustering threshold, and construct the initial clustering center. Then, the new average value of all feature objects in each cluster is recalculated as the new cluster center.Second,it traverses all objects in a cluster of ATC network security attack behavior feature data. Finally, the cluster detection of ATC network security attack behavior is completed by the computation of objective functions. The experiment took three groups of experimental attack behavior data sets as the test object, and took the detection rate, false detection rate and recall rate as the test indicators, and selected three similar methods for comparative test. The experimental results show that the detection rate of this method is about 98%,the false positive rate is below 1%,and the recall rate is above 97%.Research shows that this method can improve the detection performance of security attacks in air traffic control network. 展开更多

Vehicular ad hoc networks(VANETs)provide intelligent navigation and efficient route management, resulting in time savings and cost reductions in the transportation sector. However, the exchange of beacons and messages over public channels among vehicles and roadside units renders these networks vulnerable to numerous attacks and privacy violations. To address these challenges, several privacy and security preservation protocols based on blockchain and public key cryptography have been proposed recently. However, most of these schemes are limited by a long execution time and massive communication costs, which make them inefficient for on-board units(OBUs).Additionally, some of them are still susceptible to many attacks. As such, this study presents a novel protocol based on the fusion of elliptic curve cryptography(ECC)and bilinear pairing(BP)operations. The formal security analysis is accomplished using the Burrows–Abadi–Needham(BAN)logic, demonstrating that our scheme is verifiably secure. The proposed scheme’s informal security assessment also shows that it provides salient security features, such as non-repudiation,anonymity,and unlinkability. Moreover, the scheme is shown to be resilient against attacks, such as packet replays, forgeries, message falsifications, and impersonations. From the performance perspective, this protocol yields a 37.88%reduction in communication overheads and a 44.44%improvement in the supported security features. Therefore, the proposed scheme can be deployed in VANETs to provide robust security at low overheads. 展开更多

The real-time of network security situation awareness(NSSA)is always affected by the state explosion problem. To solve this problem,a new NSSA method based on layered attack graph(LAG)is proposed.Firstly, network is divided into several logical subnets by community discovery algorithm. The logical subnets and connections between them constitute the logical network. Then, based on the original and logical networks, the selection of attack path is optimized according to the monotonic principle of attack behavior. The proposed method can sharply reduce the attack path scale and hence tackle the state explosion problem in NSSA.The experiments results show that the generation of attack paths by this method consumes 0.029 s while the counterparts by other methods are more than 56 s.Meanwhile, this method can give the same security strategy with other methods. 展开更多

Recent DDoS attacks against several web sites operated by SONY Playstation caused wide spread outage for several days, and loss of user account information. DDoS attacks by WikiLeaks supporters against VISA, MasterCard, and Paypal servers made headline news globally. These DDoS attack floods are known to crash, or reduce the performance of web based applications, and reduce the number of legitimate client connections/sec. TCP SYN flood is one of the common DDoS attack, and latest operating systems have some form of protection against this attack to prevent the attack in reducing the performance of web applications, and user connections. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of the TCP-SYN attack protection provided in Microsoft’s windows server 2003. It is found that the SYN attack protection provided by the server is effective in preventing attacks only at lower loads of SYN attack traffic, however this built-in protection is found to be not effective against high intensity of SYN attack traffic. Measurement results in this paper can help network operators understand the effectiveness of built-in protection mechanism that exists in millions of Windows server 2003 against one of the most popular DDoS attacks, namely the TCP SYN attack, and help enhance security of their network by additional means. 展开更多

However, there is only a few models of comprehensive models nowadays. An index system for network security equipment was established and a model based on attack tree with risk fusion was proposed to obtain the score of qualitative indices. Existing web-based security applications have failed in many situations due to the great intelligence of attackers.Among web applications,Cross-Site Scripting(XSS)is one of the dangerous assaults experienced while modifying an organization's or user's information. To avoid these security challenges, this article proposes a novel,all-encompassing combination of machine learning(NB,SVM,k-NN)and deep learning(RNN,CNN,LSTM)frameworks for detecting and defending against XSS attacks with high accuracy and efficiency.Based on the representation,a novel idea for merging stacking ensemble with web applications, termed“hybrid stacking”,is proposed. In order to implement the aforementioned methods, four distinct datasets, each of which contains both safe and unsafe content, are considered. The hybrid detection method can adaptively identify the attacks from the URL,and the defense mechanism inherits the advantages of URL encoding with dictionary-based mapping to improve prediction accuracy, accelerate the training process, and effectively remove the unsafe JScript/JavaScript keywords from the URL.The simulation results show that the proposed hybrid model is more efficient than the existing detection methods. It produces more than 99.5%accurate XSS attack classification results(accuracy,precision,recall,f1_score,and Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC))and is highly resistant to XSS attacks. In order to ensure the security of the server's information, the proposed hybrid approach is demonstrated in a real-time environment. 展开更多

It is showed that this structure is provable resistant against linear attack. Vehicle-to-grid technology is an emerging field that allows unused power from Electric Vehicles(EVs)to be used by the smart grid through the central aggregator.Since the central aggregator is connected to the smart grid through a wireless network,it is prone to cyber-attacks that can be detected and mitigated using an intrusion detection system. However, existing intrusion detection systems cannot be used in the vehicle-to-grid network because of the special requirements and characteristics of the vehicle-to-grid network. In this paper, the effect of denial-of-service attacks of malicious electric vehicles on the central aggregator of the vehicle-to-grid network is investigated and an intrusion detection system for the vehicle-to-grid network is proposed. The proposed system, central aggregator–intrusion detection system(CA-IDS),works as a security gateway for EVs to analyze andmonitor incoming traffic for possible DoS attacks.EVs are registered with a Central Aggregator(CAG)to exchange authenticated messages, and malicious EVs are added to a blacklist for violating a set of predefined policies to limit their interaction with the CAG.A denial of service(DoS)attack is simulated at CAG in a vehicle-to-grid(V2G)network manipulating various network parameters such as transmission overhead, receiving capacity of destination, average packet size, and channel availability. The proposed system is compared with existing intrusion detection systems using different parameters such as throughput, jitter, and accuracy. The analysis shows that the proposed system has a higher throughput, lower jitter, and higher accuracy as compared to the existing schemes. 展开更多

Backdoor attacks are emerging security threats to deep neural networks. In these attacks, adversaries manipulate the network by constructing training samples embedded with backdoor triggers. The backdoored model performs as expected on clean test samples but consistently misclassifies samples containing the backdoor trigger as a specific target label. While quantum neural networks(QNNs)have shown promise in surpassing their classical counterparts in certain machine learning tasks, they are also susceptible to backdoor attacks. However, current attacks on QNNs are constrained by the adversary's understanding of the model structure and specific encoding methods.Given the diversity of encoding methods and model structures in QNNs,the effectiveness of such backdoor attacks remains uncertain. In this paper,we propose an algorithm that leverages dataset-based optimization to initiate backdoor attacks.A malicious adversary can embed backdoor triggers into a QNN model by poisoning only a small portion of the data. The victim QNN maintains high accuracy on clean test samples without the trigger but outputs the target label set by the adversary when predicting samples with the trigger.Furthermore, our proposed attack cannot be easily resisted by existing backdoor detection methods. 展开更多

Over the past few years, rapid advancements in the internet and communication technologies have led to increasingly intricate and diverse networking systems. As a result, greater intelligence is necessary to effectively manage, optimize, and maintain these systems.Due to their distributed nature, machine learning models are challenging to deploy in traditional networks.However,Software-Defined Networking(SDN)presents an opportunity to integrate intelligence into networks by offering a programmable architecture that separates data and control planes.SDN provides a centralized network view and allows for dynamic updates of flow rules and softwarebased traffic analysis. While the programmable nature of SDN makes it easier to deploy machine learning techniques, the centralized control logic also makes it vulnerable to cyberattacks. To address these issues, recent research has focused on developing powerful machine-learning methods for detecting and mitigating attacks in SDN environments. This paper highlighted the countermeasures for cyberattacks on SDN and how current machine learningbased solutions can overcome these emerging issues. We also discuss the pros and cons of using machine learning algorithms for detecting and mitigating these attacks. Finally,we highlighted research issues, gaps, and challenges in developing machine learning-based solutions to secure the SDN controller,to help the research and network community to develop more robust and reliable solutions. 展开更多

Due to their characteristics of dynamic topology, wireless channels and limited resources, mobile ad hoc networks are particularly vulnerable to a denial of service (DoS) attacks launched by intruders. The effects of flooding attacks in network simulation 2 (NS2) and measured performance parameters are investigated, including packet loss ratio, average delay, throughput and average number of hops under different numbers of attack nodes, flooding frequency, network bandwidth and network size. Simulation results show that with the increase of the flooding frequency and the number of attack nodes, network performance sharply drops. The secure and normal operation of distributed networks is crucial for accurate parameter estimation. However, distributed networks are frequently susceptible to Byzantine attacks.Considering real-life scenarios, this paper investigates a probability Byzantine(PB)attack, utilizing a Bernoulli distribution to simulate the attack probability.Historically, additional detection mechanisms are used to mitigate such attacks, leading to increased energy consumption and burdens on distributed nodes, consequently diminishing operational efficiency.Differing from these approaches,an adaptive updating distributed estimation algorithm is proposed to mitigate the impact of PB attacks. In the proposed algorithm,a penalty strategy is initially incorporated during data updates to weaken the influence of the attack.Subsequently,an adaptive fusion weight is employed during data fusion to merge the estimations.Additionally, the reason why this penalty term weakens the attack has been analyzed, and the performance of the proposed algorithm is validated through simulation experiments. 展开更多

Security issues are always difficult to deal with in mobile ad hoe networks. People seldom studied the costs of those security schemes respectively and for some security methods designed and adopted beforehand, their effects are often investigated one by one. In fact, when facing certain attacks, different methods would respond individually and result in waste of resources. Making use of the cost management idea, we analyze the costs of security measures in mobile ad hoc networks and introduce a security framework based on security mechanisms cost management. Under the framework, the network system's own tasks can be finished in time and the whole network's security costs can be decreased. We discuss the process of security costs computation at each mobile node and in certain nodes groups. To show how to use the proposed security framework in certain applications, we give examples of DoS attacks and costs computation of defense methods. Code dissemination is one of the important services of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Securing the process of code dissemination is essential in some certain WSNs applications, state-of-the-art secure code dissemination protocols for WSNs aim for the efficient source authentication and integrity verification of code image, however, due to the resource constrains of WSNs and the epidemic behavior of the code dissemination system, existing secure code dissemination protocols are vulnerable to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks when sensor nodes can be compromised (insider DoS attacks). In this paper, we identify five different basic types of DoS attacks exploiting the epidemic propagation strategies used by Deluge. They are (1) Higher-version Advertisement attack, (2) False Request attack, (3) Larger-numbered Page attack, (4) Lower-version Adv attack, and (5) Same-version Adv attack. Simulation shows these susceptibilities caused by above insider DoS attacks. Some simple models are also proposed which promote understanding the problem of insider DoS attacks and attempt to quantify the severity of these attacks in the course of code dissemination in WSNs. 展开更多

This paper analyzed the security of constant dimensional subspace code against wiretap attacks. The security was measured in the probability with which an eavesdropper guessed the source message successfully. With the methods of linear algebra and combinatorics, an analytic solution of the probability was obtained. Performance of subspace code was compared to several secure network coding schemes from the perspective of security, flexibility, complexity, and independence, etc. The comparison showed subspace code did not have perfect security, but it achieved probabilistic security with low complexity. As a result, subspace code was suitable to the applications with limited computation and moderate security requirement. 展开更多
