In this paper, a new fuzzy-neural adaptive control approach is developed for a class of single-input and single-output (SISO) nonlinear systems with unmeasured states. Using fuzzy neural networks to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions, a fuzzy- neural adaptive observer is introduced for state estimation as well as system identification. Under the framework of the backstepping design, fuzzy-neural adaptive output feedback control is constructed recursively. It is proven that the proposed fuzzy adaptive control approach guarantees the global boundedness property for all the signals, driving the tracking error to a small neighbordhood of the origin. Simulation example is included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. 展开更多

Due to its great potential value in theory and application,fault-tolerant control strategies of nonlinear systems, especially combining with intelligent control methods, have been a focus in the academe.A fault-tolerant control method based on fuzzy neural networks was presented for nonlinear systems in this paper. The fault parameters were designed to detect the fault, adaptive updating method was introduced to estimate and track fault, and fuzzy neural networks were used to adjust the fault parameters and construct automated fault diagnosis. And the fault compensation control force, which was given by fault estimation, was used to realize adaptive fault-tolerant control. This framework leaded to a simple structure,an accurate detection, and a high robustness. The simulation results in induction motor show that it is still able to work well with high dynamic performance and control precision under the condition of motor parameters' variation fault and load torque disturbance. 展开更多

A new type controller, BP neural-networks-based sliding mode controller is developed for a class of large-scale nonlinear systems with unknown bounds of high-order interconnections in this paper. It is shown that decentralized BP neural networks are used to adaptively learn the uncertainty bounds of interconnected subsystems in the Lyapunov sense, and the outputs of the decentralized BP neural networks are then used as the parameters of the sliding mode controller to compensate for the effects of subsystems uncertainties. Using this scheme, not only strong robustness with respect to uncertainty dynamics and nonlinearities can be obtained, but also the output tracking error between the actual output of each subsystem and the corresponding desired reference output can asymptotically converge to zero. A simulation example is presented to support the validity of the proposed BP neural-networks-based sliding mode controller. 展开更多

The global L 2 stability of the closed-loop system is established. The proposed control design overcomes the limitation of the conventional adaptive neural control design where the modeling error brought by neural networks is assumed to be bounded over a compact set. Moreover, the generalized matching conditions are also relaxed in the proposed L 2 control design as the gains for the external disturbances entering the system are allowed to have unknown upper bounds. 展开更多

Based on high order dynamic neural network, this paper presents the tracking problem for uncertain nonlinear composite system, which contains external disturbance, whose nonlinearities are assumed to be unknown. A smooth controller is designed to guarantee a uniform ultimate boundedness property for the tracking error and all other signals in the dosed loop. Certain measures are utilized to test its performance. No a priori knowledge of an upper bound on the “optimal” weight and modeling error is required; the weights of neural networks are updated on-line. Numerical simulations performed on a simple example illustrate and clarify the approach. 展开更多

In this paper, the problem of adaptive iterative learning based consensus control for periodically time-varying multi-agent systems is studied,in which the dynamics of each follower are driven by nonlinearly parameterized terms with periodic disturbances.Neural networks and Fourier base expansions are introduced to describe the periodically time-varying dynamic terms. On this basis,an adaptive learning parameter with a positively convergent series term is constructed, and a distributed control protocol based on local signals between agents is designed to ensure accurate consensus of the closed-loop systems.Furthermore, consensus algorithm is generalized to solve the formation control problem. Finally, simulation experiments are implemented through MATLAB to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method used. 展开更多

The performance of the model algorithm control method is partially based on the accuracy of the system's model. It is difficult to obtain a good model of a nonlinear system, especially when the nonlinearity is high. Neural networks have the ability to "learn"the characteristics of a system through nonlinear mapping to represent nonlinear functions as well as their inverse functions. This paper presents a model algorithm control method using neural networks for nonlinear time delay systems. Two neural networks are used in the control scheme. One neural network is trained as the model of the nonlinear time delay system, and the other one produces the control inputs. The neural networks are combined with the model algorithm control method to control the nonlinear time delay systems. Three examples are used to illustrate the proposed control method. The simulation results show that the proposed control method has a good control performance for nonlinear time delay systems. 展开更多

A new decentralized robust control method is discussed for a class of nonlinear interconnected largescale system with unknown bounded disturbance and unknown nonlinear function term. A decentralized control law is proposed which combines the approximation method of neural network with sliding mode control. The decentralized controller consists of an equivalent controller and an adaptive sliding mode controller. The sliding mode controller is a robust controller used to reduce the track error of the control system. The neural networks are used to approximate the unknown nonlinear functions, meanwhile the approximation errors of the neural networks are applied to the weight value updated law to improve performance of the system. Finally, an example demonstrates the availability of the decentralized control method. 展开更多

Recently, various control methods represented by proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control are used for robotic control. To cope with the requirements for high response and precision, advanced feedforward controllers such as gravity compensator, Coriolis/centrifugal force compensator and friction compensators have been built in the controller. Generally, it causes heavy computational load when calculating the compensating value within a short sampling period. In this paper, integrated recurrent neural networks are applied as a feedforward controller for PUMA560 manipulator. The feedforward controller works instead of gravity and Coriolis/centrifugal force compensators. In the learning process of the neural network by using back propagation algorithm, the learning coefficient and gain of sigmoid function are tuned intuitively and empirically according to teaching signals. The tuning is complicated because it is being conducted by trial and error. Especially, when the scale of teaching signal is large, the problem becomes crucial. To cope with the problem which concerns the learning performance, a simple and adaptive learning technique for large scale teaching signals is proposed. The learning techniques and control effectiveness are evaluated through simulations using the dynamic model of PUMA560 manipulator. 展开更多

By eliminating the need for externally applied coolant, internally cooled turning tools offer potential health, safety and cost benefits in many types of machining operation. As coolant flow is completely controlled, tool temperature measurement becomes a practical proposition and can be used to find and maintain the optimum machining conditions. This also requires an intelligent control system in the sense that it must be adaptable to different tool designs, work piece materials and machining conditions. In this paper, artificial neural networks (ANN) are assessed for their suitability to perform such a control function. Experimental data for both conventional tools used for dry machining and internally cooled tools is obtained and used to optimise the design of an ANN. A key finding is that both experimental scatter characteristic of turning and the range of machining conditions for which ANN control is required have a large effect on the optimum ANN design and the amount of data needed for its training. In this investigation, predictions of tool temperature with an optimised ANN were found to be within 5°C of measured values for operating temperatures of up to 258°C. It is therefore concluded that ANN’s are a viable option for in-process control of turning processes using internally controlled tools. 展开更多

This paper studies the problem of time-varying formation control with finite-time prescribed performance for nonstrict feedback second-order multi-agent systems with unmeasured states and unknown nonlinearities. To eliminate nonlinearities, neural networks are applied to approximate the inherent dynamics of the system. In addition, due to the limitations of the actual working conditions, each follower agent can only obtain the locally measurable partial state information of the leader agent. To address this problem,a neural network state observer based on the leader state information is designed. Then,a finite-time prescribed performance adaptive output feedback control strategy is proposed by restricting the sliding mode surface to a prescribed region, which ensures that the closed-loop system has practical finite-time stability and that formation errors of the multi-agent systems converge to the prescribed performance bound in finite time. Finally,a numerical simulation is provided to demonstrate the practicality and effectiveness of the developed algorithm. 展开更多

The optimal control of complex thermal energy systems is a challenge due to their dynamic behavior andconstantly changing boundary conditions. To maximize the energy efficiency of such a dynamic system, optimaltrajectories for the controlled variables are needed. Extensive system knowledge is required to model the systemaccurately enough to be able to compute optimal trajectories. The high computational cost of computingoptimal control solutions with traditional approaches, especially with changing boundary conditions, oftenmakes this approach unusable for applications with limited computational power, such as real-time applicationson electronic control units (ECUs). This study investigates a possible solution to this challenge using a simplifiedexample system. Optimal control solutions for different boundary and initial conditions are generated forthe selected solar thermal system using a direct multiple shooting algorithm. Based on Bellman’s optimalityprinciple, the generated solutions are transformed into a data set of optimal state–action pairs. On this basis, different types of neural networks are trained, specifically a feed-forward, a recurrent, and a radial basisfunction network. Thus, data generation and training can be performed offline, and the required online computations are significantly reduced since the evaluation of a trained neural network requires comparatively lowcentral processing unit (CPU) power. The trained neural network controllers are tested for their ability to outputnear-optimal control actions based on the current system state. The feed-forward and recurrent neural networksshow promising initial results in this regard. Open questions and the need for improvements are discussed. 展开更多
