In this work, the potential of natural uranium spallation target irradiated by low-energy protons for production of an external neutron source was investigated.MCNPX code was used to model the spallation target. The results showed using 30-Me V protons of 100 μA current a neutron flux in order of 10~7n/s cm^2 leaks from an optimized-dimension target. Different physical models available in the computational code do not result in significant relative discrepancies for neutron yield and deposited heat calculations. Water with a velocity of 0.6 m/s can be used as coolant for the spallation target to keep the surface temperature under 100 °C at atmospheric pressure.展开更多

The modified Glauber model is employed mainly to produce the peak of double differential cross section for the breakup process, and the exciton model and the Hauser-Feshbach theory are used for the statistical processes. The thin-layer accumulation method is used to calculate the TTNYs considering the neutron attenuation effects in the target. The calculated results are compared with the existing experimental data, and the analysis method can predict the TTNY data well at the deuteron energy of 40 MeV.展开更多

The neutron yield is determined to be 18.4±2.1 per carbon by integrating the neutron flux over the entire water volume. The corresponding simulation values are performed by Geant4 code with three models to compare with the experimental results. The comparison shows that the calculated result with the INCL model is in good agreement with the experimental data.展开更多

The calorimeter used is a twin-cup isothermal one. It works at room temperature and does not need any device of constant temperature. The instruments used for calorimetry are simple and have good properties. The background is from -1μV to + 2 μ V when the room temperature changs between 16℃ and 28 ℃. The data gotten in calorimetry are in correspondence within ±3.4 % with those from liquid scintillation method after the targets were dissolved, additionally in correspondence within ±1.7% with the data given by Amersham Laboratories for 241Am determination.展开更多
