Translation of Magic Itemsin League of Legends from English into Chinese:Challenges and Proposed Techniques

Over the past decades,video games have exploded in popularity,as thousands of enchanting games are released every year and millions of people become big fans of video games and this potential market offers plenty of working opportunities for transla?tors,especially for those who major on English to Chinese translation due to China's dense population and millions of players.Howev?er,there are several challenges in terms of translating video games,for example,coined words and ambiguous terms,because most of them exist in merely made-up stories and virtual worlds created by programmers.Though it is challenging to some extent,the presen?tation that I have done on translating magic spells in Harry Pottery and its feedback provide me with insights into the way I process translation of special terms.Hence,this paper will focus on translating magic items in the most popular online game—League of Leg?ends from English to Chinese and the purpose of this paper is trying to find ways to produce a high quality translation.By using differ?ent techniques,the translation need be readable and understandable for e-players in China or it could preserve its original flavor to maintain and attract more fans of this game.This paper will introduce general background information about this game and some magic items.Afterwards,it will point out potential challenges when translating these magic items and apply translation strategies and tech?niques to deal with the difficulties and,in turn,evaluating these approaches.Finally,some thoughts and viable methods for translating magic items in video game field will be surmised.

Semantic and Communicative Translation:On the English Translation Methods of Martial Arts Moves in Legends of the Condor Heroes

The martial arts novel is not only a significant kind of Chinese popular fictions but also a novel category unique to Chi⁃nese culture.Legends of the Condor Heroes is the representative one which was once adapted into nationally popular TV series,boasting a widespread domestic mass base.Therefore,the book may become a key to the door of foreign readers’interest in Chi⁃nese martial arts culture.This thesis takes the latest English version of Legends of the Condor Heroes as the research object,focus⁃ing on six specific translation methods from the perspectives of semantic translation and communicative translation.The six transla⁃tion methods discussed in the thesis include:(1)literal translation;(2)combination of transliteration and literal translation;(3)liter⁃al translation with necessary notes;(4)free translation;(5)combination of transliteration and free translation;(6)creative transla⁃tion.

Contemporary Inheritance of the Legend of ZHANG Zhongjing's Practicing Medicine in the Clinic

From the perspective of narratology, this paper explores the contemporary inheritance of the medical legacy of Zhang Zhongjing's practice medicine in the clinic. Its inheritance mode includes: the enrichment of language and characters and the narratio of romance, the spatial reductive narratio of cultural landscape, the body expressive narratio of ritual behavior. This makes the legend more concerned with the real society, enhances the regional cultural image, develops the local economy, and confidences to the practices role of carrying forward the response and mission of practicing medicine to save people. Compared with the previous academic circle, which previous focus on the textual research of the dispute over its historical authentication, or focus on the retrospective study of its historical origin, this paper is based on the research perspective of historical inheritance, which is constructive to the living inheritance and protection of legends.

从天地会出发的哥老会——民国时期哥老会起源的文献解读

民国时期哥老会研究的重要论著大概可以划分为两种,第一种是索隐派,就是从传说和神话故事后面去寻找隐藏的历史;第二种是史料派,也就是从档案乃至其他文献中间去寻找蛛丝马迹。其实两者都指向了同一个方向,即洪门早期的这些传说和神话并不是完全没有历史资料可以佐证。实际上利用民国时期的亲历者和研究者所提供的资料和研究,从哥老会的革命叙事、民族主义叙事、会党成员的自我形象塑造、哥老会叙事的索引派和史料派等若干方面,可以进一步地理解哥老会的起源问题。这些故事的讲述,证明了在哥老会的故事中,有着大量霍布斯鲍姆概念中的“传统的发明”,但是历史显然成为他们身份认同和维系紧密关系的纽带。就这样,他们讲述的故事有多少依据固然重要,但是他们为什么要那样讲述自己的历史,却更是需要我们去认真探索的问题。

禹作为中华文明的文化符号之一,对于中华民族的凝聚具有重要意义。禹的传说及相关禹迹遍布各地。作为非物质文化遗产的“禹的传说”在羌族文化生态保护区有较好的活态性,并以三重形态表达出来:一是汉语系统的民间传说、大禹祭祀和三官信仰;二是羌语系统的颂神禹、禹步、大禹萨朗;三是基于民间传说的禹迹。更为重要的是,岷江上游“禹的传说”的三种表达形态是叠合的,具有多语言、多形态的传承方式。三种叠合形态的一体性,说明其主导的核心价值体系是相同的,是羌族文化生态保护区的各族人民对中华文明认同的表述。

宋代话本体传奇的形成和兴盛,与通俗文言小说总集编纂直接相关。《青琐高议》《云斋广录》《绿窗新话》和《醉翁谈录》的主要功能之一是为说话人提供蓝本,所收《张浩》《苏小卿》《隋炀帝海山记》《温泉记》等传奇文本,与唐人传奇、宋人笔记路数迥异,而与话本格调相近。据此考察话本体传奇的文类特征,可以发现:从小说内容来看,放诞不检的“才子”“佳人”上演了一幕幕欢场大戏,与唐人辞章化传奇的唯美情调迥然不同;从文本构成来看,大量穿插诗词,以“雅的这样俗”的方式体现了浓郁的民间说唱风味;从艺术手段来看,直接描写人物心理,打破了此前文言作品的叙事惯例。宋代话本体传奇是传奇小说的一种新的文本类型。

从网络评价语料库看中国文学人物形象的重塑效果——以《射雕英雄传》中郭靖人物形象英译为例

金庸的长篇武侠小说《射雕英雄传》塑造了一系列个性化的人物形象,具有“英雄史诗”风格。以“豆瓣读书”和“好读网”上中英文读者对《射雕英雄传》的网络评价语料为基础,自建原文读者和译文读者评价语料库,通过比较中英读者对《射雕英雄传》中郭靖人物形象特征评价的异同,会发现英文读者对郭靖的某些性格特征的评价趋于扁平化,反映了郭靖人物形象在英译本中的重塑效果。英文读者对人物形象中蕴含中国特色的异质文化要素缺乏足够的知识储备,因此,在英译过程中译者应采取语境信息充实的翻译策略,适当为英文读者补充所缺失的语境信息,让读者以此为线索,推理出异质文化所传递的隐含意义,从而使读者对郭靖人物形象的解读更为丰满,以进一步提升翻译质量。

差异性与共同性:藏彝走廊南部“弟兄祖先”传说范式的探讨

以广泛流传于藏彝走廊南部民族中的“弟兄祖先”传说不同版本之突出情节变量——婚姻为视角,可将其分为一次天女婚型、一次兄妹婚型和多次两种婚交替型。再按照传说在藏彝走廊南部从西北至东南的流传路径,传说的不同范式就大致呈现出西北、东南相反序列对称的地域性规律变化。通过比较四个典型的多次两种婚交替型版本,发现不管天女婚还是兄妹婚都以人或物在上下、高低空间的重复流动,尝试把两种对立的事物结合起来。所以,传说不同范式的地域性变化就是通过对人群间差异性与共同性的生产、维持和转换,解决社会性别、血缘、空间等二元结构的矛盾。基于传说版本中人群间共同性与差异性的演变关系,可为研究中国民族关系、铸牢中华民族共同体意识等提供一个可供进一步分析的案例。
