An experimental investigation of passive cooling buildings has been carried out for a typical summer days extended from July to December of Baghdad in Iraq. Six independent chambers were designed and constructed for different roof constructions. Night ventilation has been applied to study the possibility of reducing air temperature in buildings by testing different air changes per hour extended from 5 to 30. Measurements outside chambers including air temperature; relative humidity and solar radiation were achieved, while surface temperature and air temperature inside the chambers were recorded. The results show that the air temperature can be decreased with a range from 3 ℃ to 6 ℃ when using 50 mm polystyrene. This decrease can further be lowered by 2 ℃ to 4 ℃ if night ventilation of change per hours in buildings is allowed. The reduction in air temperature can be reduced to 5 ℃ by combination of external night ventilation and white paint. 展开更多

Night ventilation is regarded as a promising cooling strategy by storing night cooling in the thermal mass of the building. However, night ventilation performance in hot summer is restricted by the climatic limits. In this paper,we propose a new solution as the integration of wall-attached night ventilation(WANV)and phase change material wallboard(PCMW).The principle of the proposed system is to utilize the wall-attached jet ventilation to achieve forced convection and to adopt latent energy storage of PCMW to enlarge the energy storage density capabilities, and the coupling method is expected to improve the night ventilation performance.Comparative experiments were conducted to evaluate the thermal performance of the hybrid system by evaluating indoor temperature history, thermal comfort time and cooling efficiency.Due to the high thermal energy storage density capability of PCMW,it was found that the presence of PCMW has a negative influence on night cooling efficiency but still has a positive influence on the overall cooling effect. The proposed WANV combined with the PCMW system significantly increased the temperature decrease of room air and west wall inside surface during one hour's night ventilation by 94.97%and 67.74%,respectively,and reached an extension of 38.42%of indoor thermal comfort time. The results highlight the potential of WANV integration of PCMW to improve the thermal performance of night ventilation. 展开更多

Natural ventilation is recognized for improving the thermal comfort of the built environment and indoor air quality. It provides comfortable conditions for building occupants and reduces energy consumption for air-conditioning.Therefore,it is important to study and explore effective means of ventilation to improve the building designs. This study investigates the thermal comfort of a naturally ventilated hostel operational building in the composite climate of Jaipur,India using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)simulation tool‘Cradle scSTREAM’.A 3D building model has been developed to analyze the thermal comfort for different natural ventilation strategies with advanced mesh algorithms which generate fewer mesh elements and maintain good mesh quality.A field study was carried out to collect the actual data and to validate the model which was further used to evaluate the thermal comfort range based on the ASHRAE-55 standard.Several design strategies have been applied to enhance thermal comfort. It was found that an increase in air velocity up to 0.5 m/s was achieved by Cross Ventilation while a drop of 2.0-2.5℃in the air temperature was found using Night Ventilation. It can be stated that cross ventilation increases the air movement while night ventilation gives comparatively higher comfort regarding air temperature and relative humidity. 展开更多
