The static dent resistance performance of the aluminum alloy double-curved panel formed using viscous pressure forming (VPF)was studied by finite element analysis, which mainly considers the forming process conditions. The whole simulation consisting of three stages,i.e.,forming,spring-back and static dent resistance, was carried out continuously using the finite element code ANSYS.The influence of blank holder pressure(BHP)and the drawbead on the stiffness and the static dent resistance of the panels formed using VPF was analyzed. The results show that the adequate setting of the drawbead can increase the plastic deformation of the double-curved panel, which is beneficial to the initial stiffness and the static dent resistance. There is an optimum BHP range for the stiffness and the static dent resistance. 展开更多

The two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite element method. The governing equations are discretized by a weighted residual method in space. The stable three-step scheme is applied to the momentum equations in the time integration. The numerical model is firstly applied to the computation of the lid-driven cavity flow for its validation. The computed results agree well with the measured data and other numerical results. Then, it is used to simulate the viscous uniform and shear flow over a circular cylinder for Reynolds numbers from 100 to 1000. The transient time interval before the vortex shedding occurs is shortened considerably by introduction of artificial perturbation. The computed Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients agree well with the experimental data. The computation shows that the finite element model can be successfully applied to the viscous flow problem. 展开更多

The governing equations as well as boundary land initial conditions for nonlinear dynamic response problems of viscous fluid-saturated biphase porous medium model, based on mixture theory, are presented. With Galerkin weighted residual method the corresponding nonlinear dynamic penalty finite element equation, in which the dependencies of volume fraction and permeation coefficients an deformation are included, is obtained. The iteration solution method of the nonlinear system equation is also discussed. As a numerical example, the dynamic response of a porous medium column under impulsive loading action is analyzed with the developed finite element program. The numerical results demonstrate the efficiency and correctness of the method. 展开更多

A method for simulation of free surface problems is presented. Based on the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, space discretization of the flow is obtained by the least square finite element method. The time evolution is obtained by the finite difference method. Lagrangian description is used to track the free surface. The results are compared with the experimental dam break results, including water collapse in a 2D rectangular section and in a 3D cylinder section. In order to solve unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes(N–S) equations, a new stabilized finite element method, called the viscous-splitting least square FEM, is proposed. In the model, the N–S equations are split into diffusive and convective parts in each time step. The diffusive part is discretized by the backward difference method in time and discretized by the standard Galerkin method in space. The convective part is a first-order nonlinear equation. After the linearization of the nonlinear part by Newton’s method, the convective part is also discretized by the backward difference method in time and discretized by least square scheme in space. C0-type element can be used for interpolation of the velocity and pressure in the present model. Driven cavity flow and flow past a circular cylinder are conducted to validate the present model. Numerical results agree with previous numerical results, and the model has high accuracy and can be used to simulate problems with complex geometry. 展开更多

Based on rectangular partition and bilinear interpolation,we construct an alternating-direction implicit(ADI)finite volume element method, which combined the merits of finite volume element method and alternating direction implicit method to solve a viscous wave equation with variable coefficients. This paper presents a general procedure to construct the alternating-direction implicit finite volume element method and gives computational schemes.Optimal error estimate in L2 norm is obtained for the schemes.Compared with the finite volume element method of the same convergence order, our method is more effective in terms of running time with the increasing of the computing scale.Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of our method and numerical results are provided to support our theoretical analysis. 展开更多

A hybrid Cartesian grid/gridless method is developed for calculating viscous flows over multi-element airfoils. The method adopts an unstructured Cartesian grid to cover most areas of the computational domain and leaves only small region adjacent to the aerodynamic bodies to be filled with the cloud of points used in the gridless methods, which results in a better combination of the computational efficiency of the Cartesian grid and the flexibility of the gridless method in handling complex geometries. The clouds of points in the local gridless region are implemented in an anisotropic way according to the features of the thin boundary layer of the viscous flows over the airfoils, and the clouds of points at the vicinity of the interface between the grid and the gridless regions are also controlled by using an adaptive refinement technique during the generation of the unstructured Cartesian grid.An implementation of the resulting hybrid method is presented for solving two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes(NS)equations.The simulations of the viscous flows over a RAE2822airfoil or a two-element airfoil are successfully carried out,and the obtained results agree well with the available experimental data. 展开更多

The governing equations of motion, energy, and species are transformed into ordinary differential equations (ODEs) using the time dependent similarity parameter. The resultant ODEs are then solved numerically by a finite element method. The study examines the thermal explosion branched-chain and entropy generation as a result of irreversibility of hydromagnetic reactive couple stress liquid with viscous heating and Navier slips. The reactive fluid flow is enhanced by heat dependent pre-exponential factor and axial pressure gradient in a porous wall. The flow equations for the non-Newtonian couple stress fluid model and heat transfer are solved by employing a semi-analytical collocation weighted residual method(CWRM).The efficiency and validity of the obtained results was verified with the existing results. The results reveal that at low hysteresis magnetic and viscous dissipation the irreversibility process is minimized and thermodynamic equilibrium is improved. The results from this study can assist in understanding the relationship between thermal and thermal explosions branched-chain. 展开更多

The failure of AA3003 aluminum alloy sheet metal was predicted for non-isothermal viscous pressure bulging (VPB). Utilizing the coupled thermo-mechanical finite element method combined with ductile fracture criterion, the calculations were carried out for non-isotherm VPB at various temperatures and the influences of the initial temperature of viscous medium on failure mode of bulge specimens were investigated. The results show that the failure modes are different for the non-isothermal VPB with different initial temperatures of viscous medium. For the non-isothermal VPB of AA3003 aluminum alloy sheet with initial temperature of 250 ℃, when the initial temperature of viscous medium ranges from 150 to 180 ℃, the formability of sheet metal can be improved to a full extent. The validity of the predictions is examined by comparing with experimental results. 展开更多

The mechanism of viscous heating of a Newtonian fluid filled inside a cavity under the effect of an external applied force on the top lid is evaluated numerically in this exploration. The investigation is carried out by assuming a two-dimensional laminar in-compressible fluid flow subject to Neumann boundary conditions throughout the numerical iterations in a transient analysis. All the walls of the square cavity are perfectly insulated and the top moving lid produces a constant finite heat flux even though the fluid flow attains the steady-state condition. The objective is to examine the effects of viscous heating in the fully insulated lid-driven cavity under no-slip and free-slip Neumann boundary conditions coupled with variations in Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The partial differential equations of time-dependent vorticity-stream function and thermal energy are discretized and solved using a self-developed finite difference code in MATLAB®environment.Time dependence of fluid thermodynamics is envisaged through contour and image plots.A commercial simulation software,Ansys Fluent®utilizing a finite element code is employed to verify the finite difference results produced.Although the effect of viscous heating is very minimal,Neumann no-slip and free-slip boundary conditions are able to trap the heat inside the fully insulated cavity as the heat flux is constantly supplied at the top lid.A lower Reynolds number and a greater Prandtl number with free-slip effects reduce temperature distribution in the cavity with a faster velocity than in the no-slip condition as the free-slip behaves as a lubricant. 展开更多

A ductile fracture criterion is introduced into numerical simulation to predict viscous pressure forming limit of the automotive body aluminum alloy 6k21-T4. The material constant in the ductile fracture criterion is determined by the combination of the viscous pressure bulging (VPB) test with numerical simulation. VPB tests of the aluminum alloy sheet are carried out by using various elliptical dies with different ratios of major axis to minor axis(β), and the bugling processes are simulated by the aid of the finite element method software LS-DYNA3D. On the basis of the stress and strain calculated from numerical simulations, the forming limits of bulging specimens obtained are predicted by the ductile fracture criterion, and compared with experimental results. The fracture initiation site and the minimal thickness predicted by the ductile fracture criterion are in good agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多

Viscous pressure forming(VPF) of aluminum alloy AA3003 sheet metal at warm temperature was investigated by using coupled thermo-elastoplastic-viscoplastic finite element method. The influence of viscous medium temperature distribution on sheet fracture location was studied and the distributions of fracture factor at different temperatures were obtained by using ductile fracture criterion. The results show that the failure of sheet metal varies with increasing initial temperature of viscous medium. When the initial temperature of viscous medium is near that of sheet metal, the failure location occurs at dome center, and when the initial temperature of viscous medium is too low, however, the failure location occurs at die corner. The occurrence of fracture can be postponed and even prevented through controlling the temperature distribution in viscous medium. 展开更多

Numerical simulations on focused wave propagation are carried out by using three types of numerical models, including the linear potential flow, the nonlinear potential flow and the viscous fluid flow models. The wave-wave interaction of the focused wave group with different frequency bands and input wave amplitudes is examined,by which the influence of free surface nonlinearity and fluid viscosity on the related phenomenon of focused wave is investigated. The significant influence of free surface nonlinearity on the characteristics of focused wave can be observed, including the increased focused wave crest, delayed focused time and downstream shift of focused position with the increase of input amplitude. It can plot the evident difference between the results of the nonlinear potential flow and linear potential flow models. However, only a little discrepancy between the nonlinear potential flow and viscous fluid flow models can be observed, implying the insignificant effect of fluid viscosity on focused wave behavior. Therefore, the nonlinear potential flow model is recommended for simulating the non-breaking focused wave problem in this study. 展开更多

Generally the incompressible viscous flow problem is described by the Navier-Stokes equation. Based on the weighted residual method the discrete formulation of element-free Galerkin is inferred in this paper. By the step-bystep computation in the field of time, and adopting the least-square estimation of the-same-order shift, this paper has calculated both velocity and pressure from the decoupling independent equations. Each time fraction Newton-Raphson iterative method is applied for the velocity and pressure. Finally, this paper puts the method into practice of the shear-drive cavity flow, verifying the validity, high accuracy and stability. 展开更多

A numerical model based on a boundary element method (BEM) is developed to predict the performance of two-body selfreacting floating-point absorber (SRFPA) wave energy systems that operate predominantly in heave. The key numerical issues in applying the BEM are systematically discussed. In particular, some improvements and simplifications in the numerical scheme are developed to evaluate the free surface Green's function, which is a main element of difficulty in the BEM.For a locked SRFPA system, the present method is compared with the existing experiment and the Reynolds-averaged NavierStokes (RANS)-based method, where it is shown that the inviscid assumption leads to substantial over-prediction of the heave response. For the unlocked SRFPA model we study in this paper, the additional viscous damping primarily induced by flow separation and vortex shedding,is modelled as a quadratic drag force, which is proportional to the square of body velocity. The inclusion of viscous drag in present method significantly improves the prediction of the heave responses and the power absorption performance of the SRFPA system, obtaining results excellent agreement with experimental data and the RANS simulation results over a broad range of incident wave periods, except near resonance in larger wave height scenarios. It is found that the wave overtopping and the re-entering impact of out-of-water floating body are observed more frequently in larger waves, where these non-linear effects are the dominant damping sources and could significantly reduce the power output and the motion responses of the SRFPA system. 展开更多

A discontinuity-capturing scheme of finite element method(FEM)is proposed. The unstructured-grid technique combined with a new type of adaptive mesh approach is developed for both compressible and incompressible unsteady flows, which exhibits the capability of capturing the shock waves and/or thin shear layers accurately in an unsteady viscous flow at high Reynolds number. In particular,a new testing variable,i.e.,the disturbed kinetic energy E,is suggested and used in the adaptive mesh computation, which is universally applicable to the capturing of both shock waves and shear layers in the inviscid flow and viscous flow at high Reynolds number.Based on several calculated examples, this approach has been proved to be effective and efficient for the calculations of compressible and incompressible flows. 展开更多

Thermal conduction which happens in all phases(liquid, solid, and gas)is the transportation of internal energy through minuscule collisions of particles and movement of electrons within a working body. The colliding particles comprise electrons, molecules, and atoms, and transfer disorganized microscopic potential and kinetic energy, mutually known as the internal energy. In engineering sciences, heat transfer comprises the processes of convection, thermal radiation, and sometimes mass transportation.Typically, more than one of these procedures may happen in a given circumstance. We use the Cattaneo-Christov(CC)heat flux model instead of the Fourier law of heat conduction to discuss the behavior of heat transportation.A mathematical model is presented for the Cattaneo-Christov double diffusion(CCDD)in the flow of a non-Newtonian nanofluid(the Jeffrey fluid)towards a stretched surface. The magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)fluid is considered. The behaviors of heat and mass transportation rates are discussed with the CCDD.These models are based on Fourier’s and Fick’s laws. The convective transportation in nanofluids is discussed, subject to thermophoresis and Brownian diffusions. The nonlinear governing flow expression is first altered into ordinary differential equations via appropriate transformations, and then numerical solutions are obtained through the built-in-shooting method. The impact of sundry flow parameters is discussed on the velocity, the skin friction coefficient, the temperature, and the concentration graphically. It is reported that the velocity of material particles decreases with higher values of the Deborah number and the ratio of the relaxation to retardation time parameter. The temperature distribution enhances when the Brownian motion and thermophoresis parameters increase. The concentration shows contrasting impact versus the Lewis number and the Brownian motion parameter. It is also noticed that the skin friction coefficient decreases when the ratio of the relaxation to retardation time parameter increases. 展开更多
