Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar, for relevant articles published in English between 2010 and 2019. We included the studies that investigated humor between nurses and their patient’s relationship. Results: From the initial 287 articles found, 15 were included for final revision. Data allowed retrieving information on humor definition;its applicability as a nursing intervention;humor as a tool to improve nurse-patient communication and relationship;influencing factors;humor benefits in health care context and the limits that come against its use. Conclusion: Humor is considered a powerful communication tool, it promotes well-being, relieves anxiety and stress, helps deal with stressful situations but it should be used cautiously in order to prevent undesired consequences.展开更多

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 356 ICU nurses by applying random cluster sampling. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires under the instruction of trained investigators. Data on emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and feelings of low personal accomplishment etc. were collected, calculated and analyzed. Results: The participants had a mean age of 26.96 years (SD 4.07). The mean value (M) and stand- ard deviation (SD) of emotional exhaustion was M=31.85, SD=8.38, those of depersonalisation was M= 11.69, SD= 5.54 and those of feelings of low personal accomplishment was M= 19. 79, SD = 7.02. The high degree of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP), and lack of personal accomplishment (PA) were revealed to be 76.4%, 39.6%, and 94.9%, respectively. The major influencing factors of emotional exhaustion included support from co-workers(b=0. 343, t = 1.98, P=0. 049), taking leave(b=-1. 182, t=-3. 747, P=0. 001), requisition of work(b=-l. 41, t=-2. 369, P=0. 018), and supervisor support(b=-0. 524, t=-3. 926, P=0. 001). The major influencing factors of depersonalisation were support from the supervisor(b=-0. 333, t=-4. 146, P=0.001), age(b=-0. 89, t=-2. 272, P= 0. 024) and requisition of work(b=-0. 148, t=-2. 124, P=0. 034). There was a positive co-relationship between personal accomplishment and supervisor support. Conclusions: Supervisor support, age, and requisition of work were the major influencing factors of depersonalisation. In addition, supervisor support plays an important role in low personal accomplishment. Further research should focus on supervisor support, co-worker support, time on leave, and requisition of work associated with emotional exhaustion.展开更多
BACKGROUND This research demonstrates that nurses feel pain because the pandemic process has separated them from their family and children.AIM To examine the family relationship situation of nurses in the coronavirus ...BACKGROUND This research demonstrates that nurses feel pain because the pandemic process has separated them from their family and children.AIM To examine the family relationship situation of nurses in the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic.METHODS The research adopted a descriptive qualitative design.Participants were selected by the snowball method.An individual in-depth interview technique was used while the participants were away.In-depth interviews were made with a total of 27 nurses.Nine of these nurses were excluded from the study due to communication problems and device problems during the interview.RESULTS This research showed that nurses suffered from family relationship breakdown and insufficiency in intrafamilial coping.The nurses stayed away from their families due to overtime and fear of COVID-19.They cannot meet the needs of their children and spouses for whom they are responsible,and they cannot spare time for them.They were living a tiring life with great responsibility and faced with mental problems such as burnout syndrome and depression.This study was conducted in three cities with a high number of COVID-19 cases in Turkey.We investigated three themes:Breakdown in continuity of intrafamilial relationship,ineffectiveness in role performance,and ineffective individual coping.CONCLUSION The nurses suffer from conditions such as change in parent-infant/child relation and insufficiency in intrafamilial process coping.展开更多

Methods: A total of 250 nurses from three hospitals in Shand...Objective: To study factors influencing nurses' job burnout and their subjective well-being and to explore the relationships between these two phenomena. Methods: A total of 250 nurses from three hospitals in Shandong were evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory and a subjective well-being scale. Results: Nursing staff showed significantly different levels of job burnout (P〈0.05) according to the following characteristics: age, marital status, educational background, technical tide, years of nursing experience, monthly income, manning quotas and parental status. Level of burnout is higher for nursing staff who are under the age of 30 years, are unmarried, had secondary education, had unofficial manning quota status, are childless, hold a primary title and whose years of nursing experience are less than five years. Statistical significance was found for life satisfaction (P〈0.05) with differences in age; marital status; technical title; years of nursing experience; monthly income; manning quota status; and parental status in positive emotion, negative emotion and degree. There is a significant negative correlation between every dimension of job burnout and life satisfaction and positive emotions for subjective well-being. Every component of job burnout was significantly positively correlated with negative emotions. (P〈0.05) Conclusions: Age, marital status, educational background, technical rifle, years of nursing ex- perience, monthly income, manning quotas and parental status have different influences on occupation burnout and subjective well-being. While being in a human dynamic and rhythmic interaction, nursing encounters are dyadic relationships illuminated as patterns of an interconnected relationship moving between the nurse and the nursed, and reflecting person-and-otherness events. The purpose of this paper is to describe the theory of Encountering Nursing in a Nurse-Nursed Dyadic Relationship (ThENNDyR) and to illuminate the four nursing practice processes on which the theory is founded: <em>Knowing as appreciating relational moments</em>;<em>Reflecting as engaging moments</em>;<em>Realizing as patterns of living moments</em>;and <em>Transcending as celebrating moments</em>. Nursing practice occurs in moments in which dyadic relationships transpire as nursing encounters. As fleeting as moments are, the four processes of nursing simultaneously take place as understanding conditions that the <em>who</em> and <em>what</em> of the person warrants persons. “Encountering nursing” is a momentary co-existence of persons in a person-and-otherness situation communicating connectedness-interconnectedness in distinct patterning. The inpatient-nurse relationship is based on a confident alliance characterized by important factors such as trust, confidentiality, responsiveness, genuineness, and consistency. <strong>Aim and Research Question:</strong> The aim of this study was to describe patients’ in-depth experiences of their relationship with nurses when hospitalized for anorexia. The research question was: How do women hospitalized due to anorexia nervosa experience the nurse-patient relationship? <strong>Method:</strong> A hermeneutic approach with in-depth interviews was employed. Five women with previous experience of inpatient care for anorexia were interviewed. <strong>Findings:</strong> The findings summarized how the women experienced the relationship with professional nurses in a ward characterized by a high degree of structure. The main theme Balancing feelings of emotional contradictions in the patient-nurse relationship was described by two sub-themes;Opening up for a care relationship in a rigid and structured ward atmosphere and Fluctuating in a paradox of conflicting feelings. <strong>Discussion:</strong> From the patients’ perspective, balancing the patient-nurse relationship when an inpatient involves conflicting emotional challenges. Structured interventions are perceived as effective by the patients, although they may be ambivalent about them. Therefore, a good relationship depends on the establishment of emotional and stable interaction with the nurses. <strong>Implications for Nursing Practice:</strong> Patients need interventions based on safe and competent quality care. A hermeneutic approach may improve the nurses’ ability to meet these patients in their lifeworld and establish a confident relationship. Multiple stepwise regressions indicated that academic self-efficacy, learning attitude, attitudes to major of nursing, and level of learning difficulties were major influential factors and explained 48.1% of the variance in SDLR of nursing interns.Conclusions: The score of SDLR of nursing undergraduates is not promising. It is imperative to correct students' learning attitude, improve self-efficacy, and adopt appropriate teaching model to improve SDLR.展开更多

However, some novice nurses are unable to adapt to the workplace, and subsequently quit. This study aimed at clarifying relationship issues between novice and senior nurses and examining measures that could be enforced in wards for novice nurses based on the results. Methods: An inductive analysis was conducted on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with 11 newly hired nurses who had recently graduated from nursing school. The study period was from November 2016 to March 2017. Results: The analysis generated the following three themes related to potential workplace maladaptation: 1) Adaptation to the workplace: difficulty in forming relationships with senior nurses and adapting, 2) Workplace education system: education by preceptors and senior nurses, 3) Professional stance: qualities as a nurse. Conclusion: The results indicated that novice nurses had difficulties in adapting to the workplace as well as its education system in wards. Hence, it was necessary to create habits that would not overly burden others, but instead, spread the rules of the organization, help novice nurses to understand their responsibilities, and assist them in overcoming challenges.展开更多

The band thera...The current study examined the effects of band therapy using music on grasping power, depression, and personal relationships among residents of a nursing home. Thirty subjects participated in the study. The band therapy included greetings, warm-up exercises with music, singing with dance, playing instruments, closing speech, and stretching with background music. Band therapy was held for 40 minutes once per week, for a total of four sessions, in the activity room of the nursing home. Findings showed that grasping power, depression, and personal relationships were improved at posttest, but the differences were not statistically significant. A better study design to compare the effects of band therapy with the other group, and a more simple and repeated intervention for the elderly to follow without stress might be necessary.展开更多

This was a descriptive study on the effectiveness of a Japanese tea ceremony (in Japanese: chado) intervention for improving nurse-patient relationships. I conducted a Japanese tea ceremony and examined changes in nurses’ awareness regarding interactions with patients after this intervention. The tea ceremonies were conducted with the cooperation of an Urasenke tea ceremony lecturer. A quiet environment with chairs and tables was provided for all participants while they provided written answers to a descriptive survey, which was administered before and after the intervention;they required approximately 20 min to complete the survey. The mean length of each nurse’s description was 800 characters. The tea ceremony was effective in bringing about definite changes in nurses’ awareness concerning interactions with patients. This study is useful in that it suggests how nurses can maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients.展开更多
