Emulsification is one of the important mechanisms of surfactant flooding. To improve oil recovery for low permeability reservoirs, a highly efficient emulsification oil flooding system consisting of anionic surfactant sodium alkyl glucosyl hydroxypropyl sulfonate(APGSHS) and zwitterionic surfactant octadecyl betaine(BS-18) is proposed. The performance of APGSHS/BS-18 mixed surfactant system was evaluated in terms of interfacial tension, emulsification capability, emulsion size and distribution, wettability alteration, temperature-resistance and salt-resistance. The emulsification speed was used to evaluate the emulsification ability of surfactant systems, and the results show that mixed surfactant systems can completely emulsify the crude oil into emulsions droplets even under low energy conditions. Meanwhile, the system exhibits good temperature and salt resistance. Finally, the best oil recovery of 25.45% is achieved for low permeability core by the mixed surfactant system with a total concentration of 0.3 wt%while the molar ratio of APGSHS:BS-18 is 4:6. The current study indicates that the anionic/zwitterionic mixed surfactant system can improve the oil flooding efficiency and is potential candidate for application in low permeability reservoirs. 展开更多

Based on the latest results of near-source exploration in the Middle and Lower Jurassic of the Tuha Basin,a new understanding of the source rocks, reservoir conditions, and source-reservoir-cap rock combinations of the Jurassic Shuixigou Group in the Taibei Sag is established using the concept of the whole petroleum system, and the coal-measure whole petroleum system is analyzed thoroughly. The results are obtained in three aspects.First, the coal-measure source rocks of the Badaowan Formation and Xishanyao Formation and the argillaceous source rocks of the Sangonghe Formation in the Shuixigou Group exhibit the characteristics of long-term hydrocarbon generation, multiple hydrocarbon generation peaks, and simultaneous oil and gas generation, providing sufficient oil and gas sources for the whole petroleum system in the Jurassic coal-bearing basin.Second,multi-phase shallow braided river delta–shallow lacustrine deposits contribute multiple types of reservoirs,e.g.sandstone,tight sandstone, shale and coal rock,in slope and depression areas, providing effective storage space for the petroleum reservoir formation in coal-measure strata.Third, three phases of hydrocarbon charging and structural evolution,as well as effective configuration of multiple types of reservoirs, result in the sequential accumulation of conventional-unconventional hydrocarbons. From high structural positions to depression, there are conventional structural and structural-lithological reservoirs far from the source,low-saturation structural-lithological reservoirs near the source, and tight sandstone gas, coal rock gas and shale oil accumulations within the source.Typically, the tight sandstone gas and coal rock gas are the key options for further exploration, and the shale oil and gas in the depression area is worth of more attention. The new understanding of the whole petroleum system in the coal measures could further enrich and improve the geological theory of the whole petroleum system, and provide new ideas for the overall exploration of oil and gas resources in the Tuha Basin. 展开更多

In-situ upgrading by heating is feasible for low-maturity shale oil, where the pore space dynamically evolves. We characterize this response for a heated substrate concurrently imaged by SEM.We systematically follow the evolution of pore quantity, size(length, width and cross-sectional area),orientation, shape(aspect ratio, roundness and solidity)and their anisotropy—interpreted by machine learning. Results indicate that heating generates new pores in both organic matter and inorganic minerals. However, the newly formed pores are smaller than the original pores and thus reduce average lengths and widths of the bedding-parallel pore system.Conversely, the average pore lengths and widths are increased in the bedding-perpendicular direction.Besides, heating increases the cross-sectional area of pores in low-maturity oil shales, where this growth tendency fluctuates at<300℃ but becomes steady at>300℃.In addition, the orientation and shape of the newly-formed heating-induced pores follow the habit of the original pores and follow the initial probability distributions of pore orientation and shape.Herein, limited anisotropy is detected in pore direction and shape, indicating similar modes of evolution both bedding-parallel and bedding-normal.We propose a straightforward but robust model to describe evolution of pore system in low-maturity oil shales during heating. 展开更多

Acquiring accurate molecular-level information about petroleum is crucial for refining and chemical enterprises to implement the“selection of the optimal processing route”strategy. With the development of data prediction systems represented by machine learning,it has become possible for real-time prediction systems of petroleum fraction molecular information to replace analyses such as gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. However, the biggest difficulty lies in acquiring the data required for training the neural network. To address these issues, this work proposes an innovative method that utilizes the Aspen HYSYS and full two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry to establish a comprehensive training database.Subsequently,a deep neural network prediction model is developed for heavy distillate oil to predict its composition in terms of molecular structure. After training, the model accurately predicts the molecular composition of catalytically cracked raw oil in a refinery. The validation and test sets exhibit R2 values of 0.99769 and 0.99807,respectively,and the average relative error of molecular composition prediction for raw materials of the catalytic cracking unit is less than 7%.Finally,the SHAP(SHapley Additive ExPlanation)interpretation method is used to disclose the relationship among different variables by performing global and local weight comparisons and correlation analyses. 展开更多

Based on the situation and progress of marine oil/gas exploration in the Sichuan Basin,SW China, the whole petroleum system is divided for marine carbonate rocks of the basin according to the combinations of hydrocarbon accumulation elements, especially the source rock. The hydrocarbon accumulation characteristics of each whole petroleum system are analyzed, the patterns of integrated conventional and unconventional hydrocarbon accumulation are summarized, and the favorable exploration targets are proposed.Under the control of multiple extensional-convergent tectonic cycles, the marine carbonate rocks of the Sichuan Basin contain three sets of regional source rocks and three sets of regional cap rocks, and can be divided into the Cambrian,Silurian and Permian whole petroleum systems. These whole petroleum systems present mainly independent hydrocarbon accumulation, containing natural gas of affinity individually.Locally, large fault zones run through multiple whole petroleum systems, forming a fault-controlled complex whole petroleum system. The hydrocarbon accumulation sequence of continental shelf facies shale gas accumulation, marginal platform facies-controlled gas reservoirs, and intra-platform fault-and facies-controlled gas reservoirs is common in the whole petroleum system, with a stereoscopic accumulation and orderly distribution pattern.High-quality source rock is fundamental to the formation of large gas fields, and natural gas in a whole petroleum system is generally enriched near and within the source rocks. The development and maintenance of large-scale reservoirs are essential for natural gas enrichment, multiple sources, oil and gas transformation, and dynamic adjustment are the characteristics of marine petroleum accumulation, and good preservation conditions are critical to natural gas accumulation.Large-scale marginal-platform reef-bank facies zones, deep shale gas,and large-scale lithological complexes related to source-connected faults are future marine hydrocarbon exploration targets in the Sichuan Basin. 展开更多

As the main link of ground engineering, crude oil gathering and transportation systems require huge energy consumption and complex structures. It is necessary to establish an energy efficiency evaluation system for crude oil gathering and transportation systems and identify the energy efficiency gaps.In this paper, the energy efficiency evaluation system of the crude oil gathering and transportation system in an oilfield in western China is established.Combined with the big data analysis method, the GA-BP neural network is used to establish the energy efficiency index prediction model for crude oil gathering and transportation systems. The comprehensive energy consumption, gas consumption, power consumption, energy utilization rate, heat utilization rate, and power utilization rate of crude oil gathering and transportation systems are predicted.Considering the efficiency and unit consumption index of the crude oil gathering and transportation system, the energy efficiency evaluation system of the crude oil gathering and transportation system is established based on a game theory combined weighting method and TOPSIS evaluation method, and the subjective weight is determined by the triangular fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. The entropy weight method determines the objective weight, and the combined weight of game theory combines subjectivity with objectivity to comprehensively evaluate the comprehensive energy efficiency of crude oil gathering and transportation systems and their subsystems. Finally, the weak links in energy utilization are identified, and energy conservation and consumption reduction are improved. The above research provides technical support for the green, efficient and intelligent development of crude oil gathering and transportation systems. 展开更多

This paper expounds the basic principles and structures of the whole petroleum system to reveal the pattern of conventional oil/gas-tight oil/gas-shale oil/gas sequential accumulation and the hydrocarbon accumulation models and mechanisms of the whole petroleum system. It delineates the geological model, flow model, and production mechanism of shale and tight reservoirs, and proposes future research orientations. The main structure of the whole petroleum system includes three fluid dynamic fields, three types of oil and gas reservoirs/resources,and two types of reservoir-forming processes.Conventional oil/gas,tight oil/gas,and shale oil/gas are orderly in generation time and spatial distribution, and sequentially rational in genetic mechanism, showing the pattern of sequential accumulation. The whole petroleum system involves two categories of hydrocarbon accumulation models:hydrocarbon accumulation in the detrital basin and hydrocarbon accumulation in the carbonate basin/formation.The accumulation of unconventional oil/gas is self-containment,which is microscopically driven by the intermolecular force(van der Waals force). The unconventional oil/gas production has proved that the geological model, flow model, and production mechanism of shale and tight reservoirs represent a new and complex field that needs further study.Shale oil/gas must be the most important resource replacement for oil and gas resources of China.Future research efforts include:(1)the characteristics of the whole petroleum system in carbonate basins and the source-reservoir coupling patterns in the evolution of composite basins;(2)flow mechanisms in migration, accumulation, and production of shale oil/gas and tight oil/gas;(3)geological characteristics and enrichment of deep and ultra-deep shale oil/gas,tight oil/gas and coalbed methane;(4)resource evaluation and new generation of basin simulation technology of the whole petroleum system;(5)research on earth system-earth organic rock and fossil fuel system-whole petroleum system. 展开更多

Crude oil spillage is a major challenge in Nigeria. It affects the environment, health, life, and livelihood of residents of the Niger Delta region, where oil is explored, processed, and transported via a network of pipelines. Oil spillage is primarily caused by vandalization/sabotage and operational issues such as corrosion, equipment failure, operation, and maintenance errors. Thus, prompt response is required to mitigate the impact of oil spills. In this study, we deployed low-cost Arduino systems, including sensors (vibration and flow), modules (GPS and Wifi) and an IoT platform (ThingSpeak) to detect spillage caused by vandalism and operational inefficiencies proactively. The results demonstrate that low-cost sensors can detect changes in the flow volume between the inflow and outflow attributable to spillage, and vibration shocks caused by vandalism can be detected and linked to the cause of the spillage and communicated in real time to inform response action. Moreover, we proposed a framework for field validation utilizing KoboToolBox (a crowdsourcing/citizen science platform). The prototype system designed and programmed showed promising results, as it could detect spillage for vandalism and operational scenarios in real-time, quantify the volume of spillage, and identify the location and time of spillage occurrence;indicators relevant for response planning to minimize the impact of oil spillage. The criticality of transformers and reactors in the power transmission network and the paramount importance of ensuring their reliability through maintenance of the insulating oil is known. This paper presents a comprehensive examination of the efficacy and economic viability of a dielectric oil regeneration system, as implemented by the Transmission System Maintenance Department (TSMD) of the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), Greece’s sole transmission operator. Through a detailed chemical analysis and performance evaluation, we assess the impact of the regeneration system on treated insulating oil quality over multiple cycles. The study reveals that the electrical properties of the insulating oil are fully restored after regeneration, negating the need to fully replace it, while the investment becomes cost-neutral within weeks from the commissioning of the regeneration system. This economic analysis, coupled with the system’s environmental benefits of reducing waste oil generation, positions the dielectric oil regeneration system as a compelling solution for the maintenance of power transmission assets. 展开更多

The classical source-to-trap petroleum system concept only considers the migration and accumulation of conventional oil and gas in traps driven dominantly by buoyance in a basin, although revised and improved, even some new concepts as composite petroleum system, total petroleum system, total composite petroleum system, were proposed, but they do not account for the vast unconventional oil and gas reservoirs within the system, which is not formed and distributed in traps dominantly by buoyancedriven. Therefore, the petroleum system concept is no longer adequate in dealing with all the oil and gas accumulations in a basin where significant amount of the unconventional oil and gas resources are present in addition to the conventional oil and gas accumulations. This paper looked into and analyzed the distribution characteristics of conventional and unconventional oil/gas reservoirs and their differences and correlations in petroliferous basins in China and North America, and then proposed whole petroleum system(WPS)concept, the WPS is defined as a natural system that encompasses all the conventional and unconventional oil and gas, reservoirs and resources originated from organic matter in source rocks, the geological elements and processes involving the formation, evolution, and distribution of these oil and gas, reservoirs and resources. It is found in the WPS that there are three kinds of hydrocarbons dynamic fields, three kinds of original hydrocarbons, three kinds of reservoir rocks, and the coupling of these three essential elements lead to the basic ordered distribution model of shale oil/gas reservoirs contacting or interbeded with tight oil/gas reservoirs and separated conventional oil/gas reservoirs from source rocks upward, which is expressed as“S\T-C”.Abnormal conditions lead to other three special ordered distribution models:The first is that with shale oil/gas reservoirs separated from tight oil/gas reservoirs. The second is that with two direction ordered distributions from source upward and downward. The third is with lateral distribution from source outside. 展开更多

Boosted by economic development and rising living standards, the world's carbon dioxide emissions remain high.Maintaining temperature rises below 1.5℃ by the end of the century requires rapid global carbon capture and storage implementation. The successful application of carbon capture, utilization, and storage(CCUS)technology in oilfields has become the key to getting rid of this predicament.Foam flooding,as an organic combination of gas and chemical flooding, became popular in the 1950s.Notwithstanding the irreplaceable advantages,as a thermodynamically unstable system, foam's stability has long restricted its development in enhanced oil and gas recovery. With special surface/interface effects and small-size effects, nanoparticles can be used as foam stabilizers to enhance foam stability, thereby improving foam seepage and oil displacement effects in porous media. In this paper, the decay kinetics and the stabilization mechanisms of nanoparticle-reinforced foams were systematically reviewed. The effects of nanoparticle characteristics, including particle concentration, surface wettability, particle size, and type, and reservoir environment factors, including oil, temperature, pressure, and salinity on the foam stabilization ability were analyzed in detail. The seepage and flooding mechanisms of nanoparticle-reinforced foams were summarized as:improving the plugging properties of foams, enhancing the interaction between foams and crude oil,and synergistically adjusting the wettability of reservoir rocks. Finally, the challenges in the practical application of nanoparticle-reinforced foams were highlighted, and the development direction was proposed. The development of nanoparticle-reinforced foam can open the way toward adaptive and evolutive EOR technology, taking one further step towards the high-efficiency production of the petroleum industry. 展开更多

Based on the oil and gas exploration practice in the Songliao Basin, combined with the latest exploration and development data such as seismic, well logging and geochemistry, the basic geological conditions, oil and gas types and distribution characteristics,reservoir-forming dynamics,source-reservoir relationship and hydrocarbon accumulation model of the whole petroleum system in shallow and medium strata in the northern part of Songliao Basin are systematically studied. The shallow-medium strata in northern Songliao Basin have the conditions for the formation of whole petroleum system, with sufficient oil and gas sources, diverse reservoir types and well-developed transport system, forming a whole petroleum system centered on the source rocks of the Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation.Different types of oil and gas resources in the whole petroleum system are correlated with each other in terms of depositional system, lithologic association and physical property changes, and they,to a certain extent, have created the spatial framework with orderly symbiosis of shallow-medium conventional oil reservoirs, tight oil reservoirs and shale oil reservoirs in northern Songliao Basin.Vertically, the resources are endowed as conventional oil above source, shale oil/tight oil within source, and tight oil below source.Horizontally, conventional oil, tight oil,interlayer-type shale oil,and pure shale-type shale oil are developed in an orderly way, from the margin of the basin to the center of the depression.Three hydrocarbon accumulation models are recognized for the whole petroleum system in northern Songliao Basin,namely,buoyancy-driven charging of conventional oil above source, retention of shale oil within source, and pressure differential-driven charging of tight oil below source. 展开更多

Nanomaterials and low-salinity water(LSW)are two popular enhanced oil recovery(EOR)methods that have been widely studied in recent years. The former is used for in-depth conformance improvement and the latter for microscopic oil displacement(by altering the potential and contact angle). However, there are few literature on combining them to achieve synergistic effects, especially for tight sandstone res-ervoirs.Based on the reservoir conditions of the Jimusar Oilfield, this study investigated the oil recovery mechanism of the combined imbibition system, which was composed of black nanosheet(BN)and LSW.Its performances including decreasing interfacial tension, emulsification, and wettability alterations were evaluated. The imbibition differences between the single system of BN and LSW and the combined BN-LsW imbibition system were then compared. Results showed that the combined imbibition system had a better emulsification effect on the crude oil and could also alter the wettability of the core surface. Moreover, the combined system could increase both the imbibition rate and the ultimate oil recovery. The nuclear magnetic T2 spectrum also indicated that the addition of black nanosheets could divert more fluid into small pores and thus improve the microscopic sweep efficiency. 展开更多

To provide a more accurate evaluation of the scale of deep underground resources,a new pressure coring system was carefully developed and its strength and safety of the engineering were verified by theoretical analyses and numerical simulation. The designed pressure coring system can obtain cores with length of 3 m and diameter of 50 mm at 70 MPa.The results of the ball-drop operation experiment demonstrate that differential motion assembly can effectively cut a safety pin by applying a tensile force of 4852 N,and it can lift the core tube through the center pole to complete a series of mechanical actions to seal the pressure.Additionally,by maintaining pressures at 70 MPa for 30 min,the pressure sealing capacity of the system was proven.Furthermore,a core sample with a diameter of 50 mm was obtained through a core drilling experiment and the coring performance of the pressure coring system was verified. This study can not only enrich the existing onshore coring technology but also provide a theoretical guide and design criteria for the development of similar pressure coring systems to meet the demand for deeper underground exploration. 展开更多

Guyana is an oil-producing country vulnerable to potential oil spills and the environmental risks posed by oil and gas exploration and production activities. Despite the technologically advanced equipment employed by ExxonMobil Guyana and affiliates, an oil spill could occur due to accidents, equipment failures, or sabotages. The selected coastal communities as the study areas in Region 1 and Region 2 could be adversely affected, particularly the mangrove ecosystems. Potential oil spill pollution will adversely impact mangrove ecosystems in Region 1 and Region 2. Mangroves offer significant benefits to coastal communities, such as coastal defence and carbon sequestration, which puts Guyana on the world map. The research aimed to investigate the mitigation strategies to manage the potential environmental risks on mangrove ecosystems in the coastal communities of Region 1 and Region 2. It followed a qualitative approach and conducted semi-structured interviews with the Toshaos of the selected coastal communities. The data analysis strategy was thematic analysis using the Nvivo software. The major themes included legal and policy frameworks, oil spill response strategies, community-based involvement, and monitoring and enforcement of regulations. The significant results included reviewing and updating the regulatory framework for mangrove management and conservation;oil spills mitigation measures such as containment and shoreline protection and cleanup, cost recovery and compensation, and limited monitoring and law enforcement of mangrove management and conservation regulations by inter-agencies. The regulatory and institutional framework is outdated and needs to be amended. The agencies overseeing mangrove management and conservation have overlapping responsibilities and require more coordination. There should be greater collaboration among agencies for mangrove management and conservation and improved monitoring and enforcement programmes through institutional support. 展开更多

Guyana is an oil-producing country with oil and gas exploration and production operations approximately 190 km offshore. The coastal communities selected as the study areas in Region 1 and Region 2 are adjacent to the coast and 5 to 10 km inshore. In the event of oil spills, Shell Beach Protected Areas and the other selected communities will be negatively impacted, particularly the mangrove ecosystems and the community’s well-being. The research aims to investigate the potential environmental risks posed by oil and gas exploration and production activities. It followed a qualitative approach and employed semi-structured interviews with the Toshaos of the coastal communities. The data analysis strategy was thematic analysis using the Nvivo software. The major themes included community assets, the importance of mangrove ecosystems, and the impacts of mangrove ecosystem damage through oil spills. Oil spill pollution will negatively impact mangrove ecosystems and the coastal community well-being in Region 1 and Region 2. The major results include damage to cultural artefacts, saltwater intrusion of major creeks, reduced fish catch levels, and agriculture products, which are the main economic activities in the selected communities. Consuming contaminated agriculture and marine products will lead to adverse health problems. Mangrove ecosystems provide considerable benefits to coastal community residents, including shields against river bank erosion, natural habitats for wildlife and source of income, shared traditions, social values, recreational facilities, and tourist attractions. These benefits contribute to the overall coastal community’s well-being. The mangrove forests must be protected and conserved to avoid environmental damage. 展开更多

Electric submersible pumps account for a considerable proportion in the development of the Bohai Oilfield. Improving the system efficiency of the electric submersible pump wells, ensuring that the units operate in the high-efficiency zone, is essential. Analysis shows that the efficiency of the electric submersible pump system depends on the wear and tear of each component of the submersible pump equipment, the setting of operational parameters, and more importantly, the production status and daily management level of the oil well. Therefore, improving the structural performance of the submersible pump product, optimizing the parameters setting of the oil well, strengthening daily management, establishing a scientific management system, and improving the production management process and system can effectively improve the production efficiency and economic benefits of the oil well, and further achieve the goal of energy saving and emission reduction. In addition, it is necessary to actively promote the concept and technology of energy saving and emission reduction, encourage oilfield enterprises to explore effective measures to reduce the energy consumption of the electric submersible pump system by strengthening the scientific management system, and achieve a green, low-carbon, and high-quality development of oilfield production to achieve the unity of economic benefits, social benefits, and environmental benefits. This article applies the above measures in the P oilfield to achieve energy optimization of submersible electric pump systems, reducing the daily power consumption of single well submersible electric pump systems by 371 kWh per day, increasing the submersible electric pump's lifespan by 200 days, generating considerable project benefits. 展开更多

The relative permeability curve has been measured with simulation oil (refined oil) and gas (nitrogen or air) at room temperature and a lowpressure, both of which are very important parameters for depicting the flow of fluid through porous media in a hydrocarbon reservoir. This basic measurement is often applied in exploitation evaluation, but the underground conditions with high temperature and pressure, and the phase equilibrium of oil and gas, are not taken into consideration when the relative permeability curve is tested. There is an important theoretical and practical sense in testing the diphase relative permeability curve of the equilibrium of oil and gas under the conditions of high temperature and pressure. The test method for the relative permeability curve is proposed in this paper. The relative permeability of the equilibrium of oil and gas and the standard one are tested in two fluids, and the differences between these two methods are stated. The research results can be applied to the simulation and prediction of CVD in long cores and then the phenomenon can better explain that the recovery of condensate gas rich in condensate oil is higher than that of CVD test in PVT. Meanwhile, the research shows that the relative permeability curve of equilibrium oil and gas is sensitive to the rate of exploitation, and the viewpoint proves that an improved gas recovery rate can properly increase the recovery of condensate oil. 展开更多

The Well Tashen 5(TS5),drilled and completed at a vertical depth of 9017 m in the Tabei Uplift of the Tarim Basin,NW China,is the deepest well in Asia.It has been producing both oil and gas from the Sinian at a depth of 8780e8840 m,also the deepest in Asia in terms of oil discovery. In this paper, the geochemical characteristics of Sinian oil and gas from the well were investigated and compared with those of Cambrian oil and gas discovered in the same basin. The oil samples, with Pr/Ph ratio of 0.78 and a whole oil carbon isotopic value of31.6‰,have geochemical characteristics similar to those of Ordovician oils from the No.1 fault in the North Shuntuoguole area(also named Shunbei area)and the Middle Cambrian oil from wells Zhongshen 1(ZS1)and Zhongshen 5(ZS5)of Tazhong Uplift. The maturity of light hydrocarbons, diamondoids and aromatic fractions all suggest an approximate maturity of 1.5%e1.7%Ro for the samples.The(4-+3-)methyldiamantane concentration of the samples is 113.5 mg/g,indicating intense cracking with a cracking degree of about 80%,which is consistent with the high bottom hole temperature(179℃).The Sinian gas samples are dry with a dryness coefficient of 0.97.The gas is a mixture of kerogen-cracking gas and oil-cracking gas and has Ro values ranging between 1.5%and 1.7%,and methane carbon isotopic values of41.6‰.Based on the equivalent vitrinite reflectance(R_(eqv)=1.51%e1.61%)and the thermal evolution of source rocks from the Cambrian Yu'ertusi Formation of the same well,it is proposed that the Sinian oil and gas be mainly sourced from the Cambrian Yu'ertusi Formation during the Himalayan period but probably also be joined by hydrocarbon of higher maturity that migrated from other source rocks in deeper formations. The discovery of Sinian oil and gas from Well TS5 suggests that the ancient ultra-deep strata in the northern Tarim Basin have the potential for finding volatile oil or condensate reservoirs. 展开更多
