Investigation and measurement of old building response to the overlapped shield tunnel of multiple schemes in the sandy cobble stratum

Ground movements due to tunneling are becoming increasingly critical as buildings are located around construction sites.This study proposes a new combined reinforcement method using a foundation grouting oblique pipe roof.The former improves the bearing capacity of the subsoil,and the latter blocks the transmission of soil deformation,which weakens the influence of construction during overlapped tunnel under-crossing.Based on this new method,a case study of the shield tunneling response to an old building in Line 6 of China’s Chengdu Metro is presented.Additionally,three-dimensional numerical models without reinforcement,traditional foundation grouting reinforcement,and the new combined reinforcement schemes were compared.The numerical simulation performance was verified using a set of field instrumentation data,which demonstrated that the old building response to the overlapped tunnels was under control,and the maximum deformation,angular distortion,and principal tensile strain of the building were 5.25 mm,5.1010–6 rad/m,and 0.0081%,respectively.Compared with the traditional reinforcement scheme,the deformation,angular distortion,and principal tensile strain in the combined reinforcement scheme were reduced by 54.78%,71.02%,and 70.22%,respectively.These results have important implications for the design and construction of shield tunnels and their response to old buildings.

An Understanding of Old and New Buildings in Chinese National Parks with Reference to Mount Emei

This paper presents an investigation on attitudes towards old and new buildings in Mount Emei that is a significant cultural national park in China. Questionnaires and interviews were employed to collect data from those whose careers and lives are affected, and were affected, by the buildings. The investigation reveals that people show significantly different attitudes towards the two types of buildings and place more value on old buildings. People particularise their liking for old buildings associated with traditional values, aesthetic quality and conformity to surroundings whereas indicates their disliking for new ones with changed values from tradition to modernity, unsound administrative management and poor respect for surroundings. It is concluded that traditional ideology tends to be well expressed by the old buildings but poorly by new ones. It is accordingly suggested that ideology should be taken more into account in new building projects in Mount Emei.

Innovative Thinking on the Renovation Design of Old Industrial Building Space

The current study investigated the value and significance of the existence of the old industrial buildings, as well as the necessity and difficulty to renovate the design. Combined with successful cases, this study analyzed and showed that one should not only deal with the relationship between the original architectural style and construction of modem cities in the process of renovation design of the old industrial building space. More attention should also be paid to create new space to meet the functional requirements of the modem features, and then complete substantial renovation of old industrial building space through the innovative design. In the use of aesthetic innovative design for the renovation of the old industrial building space, people must respect the space of old industrial buildings as the prerequisite of the renovation design. It is needed to expound the local space reconstruction methods and design principles respectively on the basis of respect. And then one should grasp the whole space and make the structured design and reasonable use according to the new space functional requirements of different functional areas. This paper attempted to learn from environmental art study on the renovation of old industrial buildings space and in terms of innovative design. The authors explored the innovative thinking on the renovation design of old industrial building space through the analysis of the reality.

People's Awareness of the Building Problems Existing in Mount Emei National Park

Studies on the awareness of the problems existing in new and old buildings in Mount Emei National Park have been carried out. It is found that the problems in relation to old and to new buildings are different. Then, authorities that can combat problems of old and new buildings are in general different. After that, in relation to old buildings, architectural design institution and religious unit are considered to be able to deal with the problems resulting from function and utilisation and the Mount Emei Authority to those from organisation and management. In relation to the new, the planning institution is believed to be the most authoritative to tackle surrounding and traditional value problems while the architectural design institution is well placed to resolve aesthetic problems. Finally, both old and new buildings require improved powers, policy, administration and organisation to combat the problems although financial resources are emphasised for the old buildings and improvements in planning and architectural design for the new ones.
