Strategies for Fostering Interaction in Online Classrooms:A Conversation Analysis of Teacher-Student Verbal Interaction in Random Questioning in Pandemic-Initiated Online Teaching

This paper aims to explore how a veteran teacher organizes online teaching initiated by the pandemic and how she deals with the problems in online teacher-student verbal interaction.By analyzing a corpus of 20 audio-recorded online lessons between a math teacher and her students during the COVID-19 pandemic from April 11 to May 10,2022,four interactional segments are selected as the focus of the study.The results of the conversation analysis of the segments showed that students’modesty,lack of confidence,lack of ability,and network delay are the main factors affecting online teacher-student interaction.By encouraging students to answer questions,enlightening students to give answers,enriching students’answers,and entertaining the teaching atmosphere(“4Es”strategies),the teacher solved the problems successfully.The findings from this study can provide pedagogical experience and implications for practical teaching.

The Impact of Online Teaching on Chinese Secondary School Students and Their Parents:A Case Study in Secondary School S in Quanzhou

In response to the spread of COVID-19 in Quanzhou on 13th March,2022,a number of schools,including kindergartens,primary schools,junior/senior high schools,and universities,implemented online teaching.In this context,this study explores the impact of online education on students and their parents in Secondary School S in Quanzhou,Fujian Province,China.Some studies found that online education broke the traditional control model of offline classroom teaching,and that both teachers and students had more autonomy.However,this study shows that online teaching only gives students more autonomy in learning space,but puts more pressure on their long learning time and online tasks submission.The study highlights the impact of online education on students’performance and mental health,as well as the impact on parents.

Achieve Intended Learning Outcomes and Improving Digital Literacy Skills for Practical-Based Subjects Using Online Teaching via Propagation of OER Materials

As professors are subjected to teaching their classes online due to the recent COVID-19, our local Hong Kong students find it difficult to consult their teachers, and ultimately would fail to achieve the intended learning outcomes, especially for practical-based subjects. In this research, students having online classes of a practical-based fabric design subject were encouraged to self-study from Open Educational Resource (OER) materials for a further and better understanding of their subject. Additionally, online materials were developed to improve students’ understanding via skill of digital literacy. Their learning progress was evaluated and compared to the face-to-face version. The majority of students found online classes combined with self-studying OER materials, potentially be a substitute for face-to-face classes. Most of the students further opined different OER videos assisted them without any face-to-face instructions in practical works, to develop new fabric samples from the inspiration. Analysis of test results, and comparison of students’ final grades with different learning modes, supported these phenomena.

A Survey on the Evaluation Literacy of College English Teachers Under the Online Teaching Mode

Under the online teaching model,the evaluation literacy of college English teachers has become one of the critical factors affecting students’learning effects[1].This study uses a self-compiled questionnaire to investigate the current status of evaluation literacy of college English teachers under the online teaching model from four aspects:evaluation awareness,evaluation knowledge,evaluation ability,and evaluation ethics.The results show that college English teachers’overall evaluation literacy level is relatively high,but there are areas for improvement.Based on the survey results,suggestions are put forward to improve teachers’evaluation literacy,such as changing teaching concepts and increasing self-reflection;strengthening training and learning to enhance professional development awareness;conducting cooperative research and emphasizing team strengths.

Research on Online Teaching and Offline Course Construction for Power Electronics

Aiming at the characteristics of huge knowledge points,strong practicality and diversity of software security course,adhering to the“Π”scheme for emerging engineering education,based on Tencent classroom,Tencent conference and Lan ink cloud class,and guided by BOPPPS teaching model and deep learning theory,“three preparations before class,five channels in class and five tracking after class”is proposed.Three preparations before class and five tracking after class serve the five channels in class.Five channels in class take live teaching as the core,and teach students knowledge through five channels.Practice has proved that this mode can effectively solve the problem of teaching a large number of knowledge in limited class hours,improve students’practical ability and enhance the effect of classroom teaching.

The Effects of Online Teaching on EFL Students’Learning Motivation

This study investigates the positive and negative effects of online teaching on EFL students’learning motivation.There are 26 English majors in a Chinese university participant in this study.Data were collected from multiple sources:semi-structured interview and direct observation.The result shows that in the course aspect,it has a positive effect.In the teacher aspect,it has both negative and positive effects.But in the learning group aspect,it has a negative effect,because of losing of students’interaction.

Smart Drawing for Online Teaching

Teaching and learning-related activities have embraced digital technology especially,with the current global pandemic restrictions pervaded during the last two years.On the other hand,most of the academic and professional presentations are conducted using online platforms.But the presenter-audience interaction is hindered to a certain extent in an online case in contrary to face-to-face where real-time writing is beneficial when sketching is involved.The use of digital pens and pads is a solution for such instances,though the cost of acquiring such hardware is high.Economical solutions are essential as affordability is concerned.In this study,a real-time user-friendly,innovative drawing system is developed to address the issues related to the problems confronted with online presentations.This paper presents the development of an algorithm using Hand Landmark Detection,which replaces chalks,markers and regular ballpoint pens used in conventional communication and presentation,with online platforms.The proposed application in this study is acquired by Python and OpenCV libraries.The letters or the sketches drawn in the air were taken straight to the computer screen by this algorithm.The proposed algorithm continuously identifies the Hand Landmark using the images fed by the web camera,and text or drawing patterns are displayed on the screen according to the movements made by Hand Landmark on the image space.The developed user interface is also user-friendly.Hence the communication of letters and sketches were enabled.Although the concept has been developed and tested,with further research the versatility and accuracy of communication can be enhanced.

A Study on the Online Teaching Input of Higher Education Teachers Based on K-Means Analysis

Online teaching has become an important form of regular teaching in higher education institutions,and teachers’input in online teaching is directly related to the quality of online teaching.A K-means cluster analysis of teachers’teaching behaviours in the online teaching platform of Sanya Aviation and Tourism College and a comparison of the mean values of each semester’s behaviours reveal that teachers’overall online teaching input is insufficient and their online teaching behaviours need to be optimized;their teaching energy has improved and their online teaching resources are more completed;their teaching emotional input is seriously lacking and their online interaction needs to be strengthened.To address these problems,the following measures can be taken:improve teachers’incentives to increase the overall investment in online teaching;change teachers’roles to strengthen the emotional investment in online teaching;and strengthen teachers’training to enhance online teaching design skills.
