Finesse measurement for high-power optical enhancement cavity

Finesse is a critical parameter for describing the characteristics of an optical enhancement cavity(OEC). This paper first presents a review of finesse measurement techniques, including a comparative analysis of the advantages, disadvantages, and potential limitations of several main methods from both theoretical and practical perspectives. A variant of the existing method called the free spectral range(FSR) modulation method is proposed and compared with three other finesse measurement methods, i.e., the fast-switching cavity ring-down(CRD) method, the rapidly swept-frequency(SF) CRD method, and the ringing effect method. A high-power OEC platform with a high finesse of approximately 16000 is built and measured with the four methods. The performance of these methods is compared, and the results show that the FSR modulation method and the fast-switching CRD method are more suitable and accurate than the other two methods for high-finesse OEC measurements. The CRD method and the ringing effect method can be implemented in open loop using simple equipment and are easy to perform. Additionally, recommendations for selecting finesse measurement methods under different conditions are proposed, which benefit the development of OEC and its applications. 展开更多

Optical enhancement cavity(OEC)is a powerful tool for fundamental research and diagnostics.In this paper,the progress of a continuous-wave OEC to realize of megawatt cavity for a novel light source based on a steady-state microbunching(SSMB)mechanism,is reported.After efficiently suppressing all external noise and optimizing the alignment,mode-matching,and polarization matching,stable and long-term locking is achieved with the help of two feedback loops.The modal instability phenomenon caused by the surface thermoelastic deformation is observed.A pair of D-shape mirrors are utilized to remove the high-order modes.Finally,an intra-cavity average power of 30 kW is reached. 展开更多

AIM:To investigate changes in choroidal thickness and vascularity in keratoconus patients treated with corneal crosslinking.METHODS:This study evaluated 28 eyes of 22 patients with keratoconus who underwent corneal crosslinking.The choroidal thicknesses were evaluated on enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography at the preoperative and postoperative 3d,1,and 3mo.Choroidal thickness in the four cardinal quadrants and the fovea were evaluated.The choroidal vascularity index was also calculated.RESULTS:There was no significant difference in central choroidal thickness between the preoperative and postoperative 3d,1mo(P>0.05).There was a significant increase in the 3mo(P=0.034)and a significant decrease in the horizontal choroidal vascularity index on the postoperative 3d(P=0.014),there was no statistically significant change in vertical axes and other visits in horizontal sections(P>0.05).CONCLUSION:This study sheds light on choroidal changes in postoperative corneal crosslinking for keratoconus.While it suggests the procedure’s relative safety for submacular choroid,more extensive research is necessary to confirm these findings and their clinical significance. 展开更多

A doublewidth plasmonic grating design is introduced, where each period has two alternating metal widths separated by a nanogap. With this new design, analysis has shown that plasmonic resonances couple between each metal section,resulting in even greater optical enhancement compared with single-width gratings. The geometry that gives the greatest optical enhancement has been determined with a computational model. This work demonstrates that the increased enhancement is due to hybridized modes that couple between the two grating segments. 展开更多

AIM:To characterize spectral-domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT)features of chorioretinal folds in orbital mass imaged using enhanced depth imaging(EDI).METHODS:Prospective observational case-control study was conducted in 20 eyes of 20 patients,the uninvolved eye served as a control.All the patients underwent clinical fundus photography,computed tomography,EDI SDOCT imaging before and after surgery.Two patients with cavernous hemangiomas underwent intratumoral injection of bleomycin A5;the remaining patients underwent tumor excision.Patients were followed 1 to 14mo following surgery(average follow up,5.8mo).RESULTS:Visual acuity prior to surgery ranged from 20/20 to 20/200.Following surgery,5 patients’visual acuity remained unchanged while the remaining 15 patients had a mean letter improvement of 10(range 4 to 26 letters).Photoreceptor inner/outer segment defects were found in 10 of 15 patients prior to surgery.Following surgical excision,photoreceptor inner/outer segment defects fully resolved in 8 of these 10 patients.CONCLUSION:Persistence of photoreceptor inner/outer segment defects caused by compression of the globe by an orbital mass can be associated with reduced visual prognosis.Our findings suggest that photoreceptor inner/outer segment defects on EDI SD-OCT could be an indicator for immediate surgical excision of an orbital mass causing choroidal compression. 展开更多

To increase the absorption in a thin layer of absorbing material (amorphous silicon, a-Si), a light trapping design is presented. The designed structure incorporates periodic metal-insulator-metal waveguides to enhance the optical path length of light within the solar cells. The new design can result in broadband optical absorption enhancement not only for transverse magnetic (TM)-polarized light, but also for transverse electric (TE)-polarized light. No plasmonic modes can be excited in TE-polarization, but because of the coupling into the a-Si planar waveguide guiding modes and the diffraction of light by the bottom periodic structures into higher diffraction orders, the total absorption in the active region is also increased. The results from rigorous coupled wave analysis show that the overall optical absorption in the active layer can be greatly enhanced by up to 40%. The designed structures presented in this paper can be integrated with back contact technology to potentially produce high-efficiency thin-film solar cell devices. 展开更多

The micro-PL and I-V responses are measured before and after the decoration orAl NPs. The FDTD stimulation is also carried out to demonstrate the optical field distribution around the decoration of Al NPs on the surface of a ZnO microrod. Due to an implementation of AI NPs, the ZnO microrod exhibits an improved photoresponse behavior. In addition, AI NPs induced localized surface plasmons (LSPs) as well as improved optical field confinement can be ascribed to an enhancement of ultraviolet (UV) response. This research provides a method for improving the responsivity of photodetectors. 展开更多

AIM:To assess peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)and choroidal thickness obtained with enhanced depth imaging(EDI)mode compared with those obtained without EDI mode using Heidelberg Spectralis optical coherence tomography(OCT).METHODS:Fifty eyes of 25 normal healthy subjects and32 eyes of 20 patients with different eye diseases were included in the study.All subjects underwent 3.4 mm diameter peripapillary circular OCT scan centered on the optic disc using both the conventional and the EDI OCT protocols.The visualization of RNFL and choroidoscleral junction was assessed using an ordinal scoring scale.The paired t-test,intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC),95%limits of agreement(LoA),and Bland and Altman plots were used to test the agreement of measurements.RESULTS:The visibility score of RNFL obtained with and without EDI was of no significant difference(P=0.532),the visualization of choroidoscleral junction was better using EDI protocol than conventional protocol(P〈0.001).Peripapillary RNFL thickness obtained with EDI was slightly thicker than that obtained without EDI(103.25±9.42μm vs 101.87±8.78μm,P=0.010).The ICC of the two protocols was excellent with the value of 0.867 to 0.924,the 95%LoA of global RNFL thickness was between-10.0 to 7.4μm.Peripapillary choroidal thickness obtained with EDI was slightly thinner than that obtained without EDI(147.23±51.04μm vs 150.90±51.84μm,P〈0.001).The ICC was also excellent with the value of 0.960 to 0.987,the 95%LoA of global choroidal thickness was between-12.5 to 19.8μm.CONCLUSION:Peripapillary circular OCT scan with or without EDI mode shows comparable results in the measurement of peripapillary RNFL and choroidal thickness. 展开更多

Enhanced optical transmission by V-shaped nanoslit in metal film

In this paper, we reveal that the enhanced transmission through a perforated metal film can be further boosted up by a V-shaped nanoslit, which consists of two connected oblique slits. The maximum transmission at resonance can be enhanced significantly by 71.5% in comparison with the corresponding vertical slit with the same exit width. The value and position of transmission resonance peak strongly depend on the apex angle of the V-shaped slit. The optimum apex angle, at which the transmission is maximal, is sensitive to the slit width. Such phenomena can be well explained by a concrete picture in which the incident wave drives free electrons on the slit walls. Moreover, we also simply analyze the splitting of the transmission peak in the symmetry broken V-shaped slit, originating from the resonances of different parts of the V-shaped slit. We expect that our findings will be used to design the nanoscale light sources based on the metal nanoslit structures. 展开更多

Zinc oxide has a large energy gap and thus it has potential application in the field of solar cells by tuning the absorption of sunlight. In order to enhance its absorption of sunlight,dark color zinc oxides have been prepared by traditional hydrothermal method directly using a zinc foil as both source and substrate. We found that we could tune the optical properties of ZnO samples by changing the temperature. In particular, increasing temperature could significantly reduce the reflectivity of solar energy in the visible range. We speculate that the phenomenon is relevant to the sharp cone morphology of the ZnO nanorods grown on the surface of Zn foils, which furthermore enhance refraction and reflection of light in the nanorods. The capacity to improve the light absorption of ZnO may have a bright application in raising the efficiency of solar cells. 展开更多

Peripapillary choroidal thickness in Chinese children using enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography

AIM:To evaluate the peripapillary choroidal thickness(PPCT) in Chinese children,and to analyze the influencing factors.METHODS: PPCT was measured with enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography(EDI-OCT) in 70children(53 myopes and 17 non-myopes) aged 7 to 18 y,with spherical equivalent refractive errors between 0.50and-5.87 diopters(D).Peripapillary choroidal imaging was performed using circular scans of a diameter of 3.4 mm around the optic disc.PPCT was measured by EDI-OCT in six sectors: nasal(N),superonasal(SN),superotemporal(ST),temporal(T),inferotemporal(IT)and inferonasal(IN),as well as global RNFL thickness(G).RESULTS: The mean global PPCT was 165.49±33.76 μm.The temporal,inferonasal,inferotemporal PPCT were significantly thinner than the nasal,superonasal,superotemporal segments PPCT were significantly thinner in the myopic group at temporal,superotemporal and inferotemporal segments.The axial length was significantly associated with the average global(β=-0.419,P =0.014),superonasal(β=-2.009,P=0.049) and inferonasal(β=-2.000,P=0.049) PPCT.The other factors(gender,age,SE) were not significantly associated with PPCT.CONCLUSION: PPCT was thinner in the myopic group at temporal,superotemporal and inferotemporal segments.The axial length was found to be negatively correlated to PPCT.We need more further studies about the relationship between PPCT and myopia. 展开更多

Cascaded optical field enhancement(CFE)can be realized in some specially designed multiscale plasmonic nanostructures,in which the generation of extremely strong fields at nanoscale volume is crucial for many applications,for example,surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS).In this paper,we propose a strategy for realizing a high-quality plasmonic nanoparticle-in-cavity(PIC)nanoantenna array,in which strong coupling between a nanoparticle(NP)dark mode with a high-order nanocavity bright mode can produce strong Fano resonance at the target wavelength.The Fano resonance can effectively boost the CFE in a PIC.A cost-effective and reliable nanofabrication method is developed using room temperature nanoimprinting lithography to manufacture high-quality PIC arrays.This technique guarantees the generation of only one gold NP at the bottom of each nanocavity,which is crucial for the generation of the expected CFE.To demonstrate the performance and application of the PIC array,the PIC array is employed as an active SERS substrate for detecting 4-aminothiophenol molecules.An experimental SERS enhancement factor of 2×10^(7) is obtained,which verifies the field enhancement and the potential of this device. 展开更多

The resolution of the hologram reconstruction is affected by the point spread function(PSF) of the optical system. In this paper, we modulate the PSF by a spiral phase plate, which significantly enhances the lateral and depth resolution. A quasi-two-dimensional layer of MoS2 was placed on top of a silicon optical waveguide to form a MoS2–silicon hybrid structure. Chirped pulse self-phase modulation measurements were carried out to determine the optica Kerr nonlinearity of the structure. The observed increase in the spectral broadening of the optical pulses in the MoS2–silicon waveguide compared with the silicon waveguides indicated that the third-order nonlinear effect in MoS2 is about 2 orders of magnitude larger than that in silicon. The measurements show that MoS2 has an effective optical Kerr coefficient of about 1.1 × 10-16m2∕W. This work reveals the potential application of MoS2 to enhance the nonlinearity of hybrid silicon optical devices. 展开更多

Firstly, silica sols are prepared with a sol-gel process, in which tetraethyl orthosilicate is utilized as a precursor. And by introduction of fluorine containing glycol into the sols, the porosity of silica particles and surface polarity of the coatings are decreased. Afterward, coatings are constructed with low surface roughness by modification of PMBA-PMMA. Aiming at the problem of large fading noise in Rayleigh Brillouin optical time domain analysis system, a wavelength scanning technique is proposed to enhance the performance of the temperature sensing system. The principle of the proposed technique to reduce the fading noise is introduced based on the analysis of Rayleigh Brillouin optical time domain analysis system. The experimental results show that the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) at the end of optical fiber with length of 50 m after 17 times wavelength scanning is 5.21 d B higher than that with single wavelength, the Brillouin frequency shift(BFS) on the heated fiber with length of 70 m inserted at the center of sensing fiber can be accurately measured as 0.19 MHz, which is equivalent to a measurement accuracy of 0.19 °C. It indicates that the proposed technique can realize high-accuracy temperature measurement and has huge potential in the field of long-distance and high-accuracy sensing. 展开更多
