The aim was to investigate the literacy developmental trends across the years and establish which of the two variables, word identification skills or target language oral proficiency influenced reading comprehension performance. The results indicated that word identification skills independently influenced reading comprehension performance in both standard 2 and standard 3 classes, but target language oral skills did not. Further, the analysis of invented spelling task performance revealed evidence of transfer of alphabetic coding skills of first language to English orthography. The spelling errors reflected letter-sound patterns not found in English orthography. Analysis of the miscues in the spelling task revealed that children rely on first language phonological processes to spell target language unfamiliar words as long the languages have a common alphabetic system.展开更多
Referring to the questionnaire surveys and literature materials, this paper describes the current situation of college students＇ English oral expression ability, the reasons for lack of such ability and possible solu...Referring to the questionnaire surveys and literature materials, this paper describes the current situation of college students＇ English oral expression ability, the reasons for lack of such ability and possible solutions. This research used a questionnaire survey to collect data from 146 college students from different grades, majors, universities and areas. The result shows that the deficiency in college students＇ English oral expression ability can be explained on two levels, spiritual level and oral level. Spiritual level shows that college students don＇t always have thoughts while others are communicating with them in English; oral level includes two aspects, one is that they always have no idea of how to express their thoughts well and the other is that they fail to always express themselves clearly and exactly. It is suggested that a good language environment is necessary for students to practice English pronunciation, understand culture from English speaking countries, and enhance listening skill to overcome language anxiety in communication.展开更多
English speaking skill is one of the most important skills that senior high students need to obtain in learning English.However,there are still many problems existing in students’speaking practice.As a teaching and l...English speaking skill is one of the most important skills that senior high students need to obtain in learning English.However,there are still many problems existing in students’speaking practice.As a teaching and learning strategy,Chunking is now gradually used in English classroom and has received a positive feedback.Therefore,in this paper,the influence of Chunking on improving English speaking skill among senior high school students will be investigated and analyzed through the methods of questionnaire and the follow-up interview to answer four questions:(1)What effect does Chunking have on the oral fluency of high school students?(2)What effect does Chunking have on the oral accuracy of high school students?(3)What effect does Chunking have on the vocabulary?And(4)Does the English speaking performance relate to genders?After analyzing the results of questionnaire by the SPSS and summing up the interview record,we found that most of them agree the fact that the strategy of Chunking does benefit their oral fluency,oral accuracy,and vocabulary.Also,female students have higher scores than male students.展开更多

The participants are oversea Chinese graduate students who take undergraduate courses at WOU, and some of them regard English as their Second Language. The study adopts the experimental design, There are total of 60 Chinese students participating in the study. Empirical evidence provided by the survey indicate that college students' low proficiency in speaking is due to the traditional teaching method and students' attitudes to oral English practice play an important role in their engagement in the practice, and above all, E-Dorm practice proves to be an satisfying way to enhance students' oral ability by creating a more natural language setting for students after class and forcing teachers to use a new-brand communicative competence approach in class. At last, the author gives some suggestions for researchers to achieve an ideal goal in this field.展开更多
