Native(Suaeda salsa) and invasive(Spartina alterniflora) salt marshes were selected to study the effects of Spartina alterniflora invasion on soil organic carbon(SOC) contents and stocks in the Yellow River Delta. Results showed that the SOC contents(g/kg) and stocks(kg/m^2) were significantly increased(P < 0.05) after Spartina alterniflora invasion of seven years, especially for the surface soil layer(0–20 cm). The SOC contents exhibited an even distribution along the soil profiles in native salt marshes, while the SOC contents were gradually decreased with depth after Spartina alterniflora invasion of seven years. The natural ln response ratios(Ln RR) were applied to identify the effects of short-term Spartina alterniflora invasion on the SOC stocks. We also found that Spartina alterniflora invasion might cause soil organic carbon losses in a short-term phase(2–4 years in this study) due to the negative Ln RR values, especially for 20–60 cm depth. And the SOCD in surface layer(0–20 cm) do not increase linearly with the invasive age. Spearman correlation analysis revealed that silt + clay content was exponentially related with SOC in surface layer(Adjusted R^2 = 0.43, P < 0.001), suggesting that soil texture could play a key role in SOC sequestration of coastal salt marshes.展开更多

We report fabrication and characterization of organic heterojunction UV detectors based on N,N'-bis(naphthalen- 1-y1)-N,N'-bis (phenyl) benzidine (NPB) and fullerene C60. The effects of different thicknesses o...We report fabrication and characterization of organic heterojunction UV detectors based on N,N'-bis(naphthalen- 1-y1)-N,N'-bis (phenyl) benzidine (NPB) and fullerene C60. The effects of different thicknesses of NPB and C60 layers are studied and compared. Notably, the optimal thicknesses of electron acceptor C60 and electron donor NPB are 40 nm and 80 nm, respectively. The J V characteristic curves of the device demonstrate a three-order- of-magnitude difference when illuminated under a 350nm UV light and in the dark at -0.5 V. The device exhibits high sensitivity in the region of 320-380nm with the peak located around 35Onm. Especially, it shows excellent photo-response characteristic with a responsivity as high as 315 mA/W under the illumination of 192μW.cm 2 350nm UV light at -5 V. These results indicate that the NPB/C60 heterojunction structure device might be used as low-cost low-voltage UV photodetectors.展开更多

A conceptual treatment of the mechanisms involved in the process of toxicosis by diverse agents in different tissues indicate a likely unspecific, common, central process in addition to specific precipitating factors ...A conceptual treatment of the mechanisms involved in the process of toxicosis by diverse agents in different tissues indicate a likely unspecific, common, central process in addition to specific precipitating factors acting on a particular site in a cascade of events. Free radicals, membrane functions and calcium functions appear to be links in the common pathway. Such a central mechanism could be interrelated with immunological defenses as well as genotoxic changes at different sites, suggesting parallel or related evolution of these antistress mechanisms. Many radical scavengers, antioxidants, membrane stabilizers, nutritional supplements and calcium modulators have proved beneficial either in reducing toxic impact, delaying the development of lesions or even reversing the effects. Similarly, recent evidences show that some immunomodulators can act as antioxidants and antigenotoxicants. Thus, the status of body defenses which may vary from one individual to the other have a role in deciding the effects under the same quantified risks with varying relative responses. Whether modulation of physiological defenses against stress could help in developing prophylactic measures remains an open question.展开更多

This will allow us to harness a waste product from the mines, and utilize it to enhance TiO2 photocatalytic waste water treatment efficiency. An organic linker mediated route was utilized to create a composite of TiO2 and biogenic jarosite. Evidence of Fe/O/Ti bonding in the TiO2/jarosite composite was apparent from the FTIR, EFTEM, EELS and ELNEFS analysis. The as prepared material showed enhanced photocatalytic activity compared to pristine TiO2, biogenic jarosite and mechanically mixed sample of jarosite and TiO2 under both simulated and natural solar irradiation. The prepared material can reduce the electrical energy consumption by 4 times compared to pristine P25 for degradation of organic pollutant in water. The material also showed good recyclability. Results obtained from sedimentation experiments showed that the larger sized jarosite material provided the surface to TiO2 nanoparticles, which increases the settling rate of the materials. This allowed simple and efficient recovery of the catalyst from the reaction system after completion of photocatalysis. Enhanced photocatalytic activity of the composite material was due to effective charge transfer between TiO2 and jarosite derived Fe^3+as was shown from the EELS and ELNEFS. Generation of OHU was supported by photoluminesence(PL) experiments.展开更多
