The microstructure... Carbon fiber reinforced phenolic based composites were prepared by laminating molding. The variation in mechanical characteristics of composites was evaluated with heating temperature and procedure. The microstructures of composites at different temperatures were observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, respectively. The results showed that the main weight loss range of carbon/phenolic is from 300 to 800 ℃, before 700 ℃ the weight loss was resulted from pyrolysis and after that the weight loss was mainly by oxidation in the fiber phase; with the heat treatment temperature rising, the bonding at the interface of carbon fibers and resin matrix weakened; in the pyrolysis temperature range, the interlaminar shear strength(ILSS) of carbon/phenolic showed a rapid drop with temperature rising, and then decrease in the rate of ILSS became relatively slower; the fiber oxidation had little influence on the ILSS. 展开更多

Protective Properties of High Temperature Oxide Films on Ni-based Superalloys in 3.5% NaCl Solution

The electrochemical behaviors of high temperature oxide film formed on the sputtered microcrystalline coating of M38 alloy (mc-M38) were investigated by potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques in 3.5% NaCl solution. Mott-Schottky analysis was used to study the semi-conductive properties of the surface oxide. The results of the capacitance measurements showed that the oxide films on both the coating and the cast alloy were p-type semiconducting characteristics. Both the carrier density (Na)and the flat band potential (Efb) were obviously frequency-dependent, and the optimal frequency range was from 1000 to 1500 Hz. The oxidized coating exhibited higher protectivity than the oxidized cast alloy due to the lower carrier density compared with that of the oxidized cast alloy. The EIS data of the long-term immersing tests suggested that the oxide film served as an inner-barrier layer against chloride ions. The penetration of the aggressive ions into the surface oxide resulted in the decreased polarization resistance as a function of the immersion time. 展开更多

Felt base carbon/carbon composites fabricated by super-high pressure impregnation carbonization process (SPIC) were heat treated at high temperature 2773K. The oxidation properties of felt base carbon/carbon composites were investigated at different temperatures (773-1173K), and the microstructures of carbon/carbon composites were studied by SEM and X-ray diffraction. The experimental results showed that the inter-laminar distance of (002) plane (d002) deceased while the microcrystalline stack height (Lc) increased. The oxidation rate of felt base carbon/carbon composites was invari-able at certain temperatures. The oxidation mechanism of carbon/carbon composites changed remarkably at the oxidation temperature 973K. At the initial oxidation stage of carbon/carbon composites, carbon matrix was oxidized much more rapidly than carbon felt. 展开更多

The physical and mechanical properties of metal matrix composites were improved by the addition of reinforcements. The mechanical properties of particulate-reinforced metal-matrix composites based on aluminium alloys (6061 and 7015) at high temperatures were studied. Titanium diboride (TiB2) particles were used as the reinforcement. All the composites were produced by hot extrusion. The tensile properties and fracture characteristics of these materials were investigated at room temperature and at high temperatures to determine their ultimate strength and strain to failure. The fracture surface was analysed by scanning electron microscopy. TiB2 particles provide high stability of the alumin- ium alloys (6061 and 7015) in the fabrication process. An improvement in the mechanical behaviour was achieved by adding TiB2 particles as reinforcement in both the aluminium alloys. Adding TiB2 particles reduces the ductility of the aluminium alloys but does not change the microscopic mode of failure, and the fracture surface exhibits a ductile appearance with dimples formed by coalescence. 展开更多

Ni-W-P matrix composites containing CeO2 and SiO2 nano-particles were prepared on common carbon steel surface by means of pulse electrodeposition,and the high-temperature oxidation behavior was investigated.The results show that when the oxidation time is controlled in 1 h,oxidation kinetics curve between oxidation mass gain rate and oxidation temperature of CeO2-SiO2/Ni-W-P composites accords with the index increasing law.When the oxidation temperature is controlled at 300℃,the kinetics curve between oxidation mass gain rate and oxidation time accords with the linear increasing law.The composites as-deposited are in the amorphous state and turn into the crystal state at 400℃.The microstructures of oxidation film on the composites will change from the compact state to the loose state with increasing oxidation temperature to 800℃.They are still continuous and compact,and there are no crackle,strip and falling-out.CeO2 and SiO2 nano-particles co-deposited into Ni-W-P alloy can improve the high-temperature oxidation resistance. 展开更多

Nafion/Silicon oxide composite membranes were produced via in situ sol-gel reaction of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) in Nafion membranes. The physicochemical properties of the membranes were studied by FT-IR,TG-DSC and tensile strength. The results show that the silicon oxide is compatible with the Nation membrane and the thermo stability of Nation/Silicon oxide composite membrane is higher than that of Nation membrane. Furthermore, the tensile strength of Nation/Silicon oxide composite membrane is similar to that of the Nation membrane. The proton conductivity of Nation/Silicon oxide composite membrane is higher than that of Nation membrane. When the Nation/Silicon oxide composite membrane was employed as an electrolyte in H2/O2 PEMFC, a higher current density value (1 000 mA/cm^2 at 0.38 V) than that of the Nafion1135 membrane (100 mA/cm^2 at 0.04 V) was obtained at 110 ℃. 展开更多

XRD, SEM techniques were carried out to characterize the samples. It is found that the friction coefficient of SiC/Cu composites increases with the increasing SiC content. The SiC reinforcement particles are worn down other than removed by pulling out during the wear test. Oxidation of Cu debris leads to the smooth contacting surface. Ring crack is formed under the cyclic wear test. The crack propagates through the damaged matrix and along the brittle interface between SiC particles and Cu matrix. 展开更多

Geopolymer is a new alternative cement binder to produce concrete.In the present study,a novel geopolymer composites containing bamboo shaving(0–2 wt.%)were fabricated and exposed to the temperatures of 200℃,400℃,600℃and 800℃.Physical properties,micro-structure,and mechanical strengths of the geopolymer composites were evaluated before and after heating in order to understand their thermal properties,which are essential for the use as building materials.As the temperature rises,the drying shrinkage and apparent porosity of the composites increase,while the compressive and bending strengths decrease.At the temperature range of 200℃–800℃,the residual compressive strength rates of the geopolymer composite containning 2 wt.%bamboo shaving were respective 73.8%,61.47%,56.16%,and 29.56%,meanwhile,the residual flexural strength rates were respective 46.69%,8.68%,2.52%,and 2.33%.Correspondingly,the residual compressive strength rates of pure geopolymer were respective 72.81%,61.99%,54.55%,and 14.64%;the residual flexural strength rates were 48.87%,5.69%,3.22%,and 2.47%,respectively.Scanning electron microscope(SEM),optical microscope,and X-ray diffractometry(XRD)were applied to find the microscopic changes.The strength loss in the geopolymer composites was mainly because of the thermal degradation of bamboo shaving and shrinkage of geopolymer matrix.Bamboo shaving has great potential as reinforcer in developing low-cost geopolymer composites and may be used for applications up to 400℃. 展开更多

The compressive properties of the aluminum matrix composite reinforced with 55% B4C (volume fraction) particles were characterized using Gleeble 3500 thermal-mechanical testing machine. The compressive stress--strain curves were obtained at the temperature ranging from 298 to 773 K and strain rate ranging from 1×10^(-3) to 5 s ^(-1). The results showed that the dynamic compressive strength decreased more slowly than the quasi-static compressive strength at elevated temperatures, which was attributed to the different failure modes of the composite under dynamic and quasi-static load. The strain rate sensitivity increased from 0.02 to 0.13 when the temperature increased from room temperature to 773 K, suggesting that the strain rate sensitivity of this type of composite is a function of temperature. 展开更多

The microstructure and phase com- position of the coatings were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser confocal scanning microsco- py (LSCM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The dry frictional wear behavior of the coatings at 500℃ in static air was inves- tigated and compared with that of 0Cr25Ni20 steel. The results show that the coatings comprise the slatted layers of oxide phases, unmelted particles, and pores. The hot abrasive resistance of the coatings is enhanced compared to that of 0Cr25Ni20, and their mass loss is approxi- mately one-fifteenth that of 0Cr25Ni20 steel. The main wear failure mechanisms of the coatings are abrasive wear, fatigue wear, and adhe- sive wear. 展开更多

With increasing Y2O3 content, the voltage-gradient increases because of the decrease of ZnO grain size; the non-linear coefficient and the leakage current improve but the density decreases because of more porosity; the donor con- centration and density of interface states decrease, whereas the barrier height and width increase because of the acceptor effect of Y2O3 in varistor ceramics. 展开更多

The oxidation of the Electrodeposited RE-Ni-W-P-SiC Composite materials at high temperature is investigated. The results show that during high temperature oxidation the relationship between the mass change of pure Ni, Ni-W-P, Ni-W-P-SiC or RE-Ni-W-P-SiC coatings and the oxidation time follows a mixed curve, i.e. it is approximately a linear relationship when the oxidation time is less than 60 mins while it is a power function relationship when the oxidation time is over 60 mins. The order for the oxidation rate of the four coatings is Ni> Ni-W-P> Ni-W-P-SiC>RE-Ni-W-P-SiC. The mass change of Ni-W-P, Ni-W-P-SiC or RE-Ni-W-P-SiC coatings increases exponentially with a rise of oxidation temperature. The high temperature-oxidation resistance of RE-Ni-W-P-SiC composite material is 3-4 times than that of Ni-W-P alloy coating. The cross section morphologies and X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the high temperature-oxidation resistance of RE-Ni-W-P-SiC composite coating is better than any other coatings. 展开更多

The alloy performance to resist high-temperature oxidation is mainly determined either by the formation of oxide scales or by the deposition of oxide coatings on the surface of alloys.In the former case,a protective oxide scale,such as Al_2O_3,Cr_2O_3 and SiO_2,can be selectively formed by adjusting the composition of alloys.Even if the oxide scale on the surface of alloys is spalled,new oxide can grow continuously,so the oxidation of alloys can be inhibited effectively.In the latter case,theoretically, depositing oxygen diffusion barrier oxide coatings,such as Al_2O_3,Cr_2O_3 and SiO_2,can prevent alloys from oxidation as well.However,the integrity of these oxide coatings can not maintain for a long time,owing to the thermal stress produced by the difference of the expansion coefficients between the oxide coatings and alloy substrates.Consequently,the ability to resist high-temperature oxidation by depositing such oxide coatings should be disappeared.Therefore,an oxide coating possessed both properties to act as an excellent oxygen diffusion barrier and match a suitable expansion coefficient with alloy substrate,is the basic conditions for the coating to maintain the ability to resist high-temperature oxidation of alloys. Based on above-mentioned idea,a novel composite oxide coating has been developed to obtain two kinds of functions,to act as an oxygen diffusion barrier and to adjust the expansion coefficient of coating as required.Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram of such novel oxide coating.This coating is composed of ZrO_2-8%Y_2O_3(YSZ) particles packaged by nano-Al_2O_3 film.The nano-Al_2O_3 film has a bubble-like structure,each YSZ particle is packaged in an Al_2O_3 bubble.Owing to YSZ is a good conductor for oxygen ions,so oxygen diffusion in this composite coating is determined by the walls of Al_2O_3 bubbles or the nano-Al_2O_3 film.If the thickness of all walls of Al_2O_3 bubbles in the direction perpendicular to the surface of alloy is over a critical value,the Al_2O_3 bubbles can act as an excellent oxygen diffusion barrier. Owing to YSZ has a high thermal expansion coefficient,so the thermal expansion coefficient of coatings can be easily increased by enhancing the ratio of YSZ to Al_2O_3 in these coatings. These composite coatings have been prepared by an improved sol-gel method.Firstly, YSZ particles packaged Al_2O_3 gel film were painted or deposited by electrophoresis on the alloy surface. Then,the specimens were treated by thermal pressure filtration to get primary coatings without cracks.Finally,the primary coatings were sintered in microwave furnace to obtain compact coatings. It is demonstrated from the result of cycling oxidation experiment that both of the hightemperature oxidation resistance and oxide spallation resistance are increased obviously with the ratio of YSZ to Al_2O_3 in the coatings,which are much superior to that of MCrAlY coatings.Therefore, these novel coatings can be used to protect various kinds of alloys from high-temperature oxidation,and can be also served as the interlayer in the thermal barrier coating system. 展开更多

Phases and microstructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Microhardness and bending strength of the composites were measured. The composites with 21 and 50 wt pct Fe3AlC0.5 mainly consisted of FeAl and FesAlC0.5 phases, whereas the composite with 37 wt pct Fe3AlC0.5 was composed of FeAl, Fe3AlC0.5 and graphite phases. The bonding of the reinforcement and the matrix was good. Hardness and bending strength of the composite with 37 wt pct Fe3AlC0.5 was lower than those of the 21 and 50 wt pct composites owing to the presence of the soft graphite phase. 展开更多

The research results show that the strength does not decrease until 1400℃; the fracture toughness, while, increases with temperature rising and presents peak value at 1350℃. The oxidation behavior obeys parabolic law, and the oxidation procedure is mainly controlled by diffusion of additive ions. The high oxidation resistance of this material is primary due to the presence of refractory Y3+ and La3+at intergranular glass phase. The results indicate t... In-situ Al2O3/TiAl composites were successfully synthesized from the starting powders of Ti, Al, TiO2 and Nb2O5. The oxidation behavior of the composites at 900℃ in static air was investigated. The results indicate that the composite samples present a much lower oxidation mass gain. Under long-time intensive oxidation exposure, the formed oxide scale is multi-layer. The formation of the outer TiO2 layer is fine and dense, the internal Al2O3 scale has good adhesiveness with the outer TiO2 scale, and the TiO2+Al2O3 mixed layer forming the protective oxide scale is favorable for the improvement of oxidation resistance. It is believed that the incorporation of Al2O3 particulates into the metal matrix decreases the coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate, and forms a local three-dimensional network structure that can hold the oxide scale. The formation of the oxide scale with finer particle size, stronger adherence, less micro-defects and slower growth rate can contribute to the improvement of oxidation resistance. Nb element plays an important role in reducing the internal oxidation action of the materials, restraining the growth of TiO2 crystals and promoting the stable formation of the Al2O3-riched layer, which is beneficial to improve the oxidation properties. 展开更多
