The research work is based on random web-based open survey from targeted immigrant’s social media groups targeting 30 eligible male and female immigrants living in Finland during the first wave of coronavirus pandemic. The data were collected through online data collection tools to comply with the safety guidelines during the survey period. The analysis of gathered information illuminates the subtle alienation of immigrants through the information and communication channels, and deconstructs the Finnish government interventions in the midst of a pandemic through the socially constructed lenses of inclusion and justice in Finland. The survey reveals the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions held by and of immigrants by the immigrants towards the authorities in Finland.Grounded theory is applied to qualitatively analyze data. The analysis is anchored on the stereotype content model to reveal the subtle historical and systemic alienation through information and communication channels. The theory of prejudice and the theory of symbolic racism are complimentarily used to deconstruct the injustice meted against the immigrants resulting in alienation through official authority practices and socially constructed disguises of inclusivity and justice by the Finnish society. 展开更多

Amo’s Hermeneutics and Hegel’s Historical Prejudices Against Africa

During the lifetime of Anton Wilhelm Amos(ca.1700-ca.1755),the hermeneutics served not only interpreting and understanding of philosophical contexts, but also to overcome the prejudices and the underlying spirit of partiality with them.As one of the first modern theorist and systematician of hermeneutics,Amo dealt intensively with the prejudice problem.According to him,any prejudice is a mistake of the mind.Generalizing,Amo claims that prejudices are not a consequence of a false knowledge, but they arise by the lack of knowledge par excellence and are therefore in contradiction with reason.Amo sees the task of hermeneutics to counteract the prejudices inherent contradictions. With regard to the historical hermeneutics,he recommends to look at the past, not by selective or specific moments, but in its generality,in order to avoid contradictory and even false interpretations. But he acknowledges that only generalists as polyvalent historians of philosophy with an interdisciplinary mindset and multilingualism knowledge have this ability to general thinking. It will be examined more closely in this presentation whether Hegel can meet the hermeneutic claim within the meaning of Amo because of his pessimistic-ridiculous and contradictory prejudices about Africa. Finally, the question will be whether Hegel perhaps confounded his mental projections with the real history of Africa why he did not succeed to identify the real causes of the problems of this continent, and to describe their immediate consequences objectively. 展开更多

Ageism has shown a surprising force of prevalence in western society. Nourished by mythical, empirical, ideological and health elements, it has been enormously successful in imposing an image of vulnerability, decrepitude and illness on older adults. Since 1969, when the first academic article on the subject was published, much has been written on the subject, but little progress has been made in terms of social and state policies and community awareness. When an attempt has been made to propose an alternative to decrepit (Aristotelian as we suggest in this paper) ageism, nothing has emerged but a new kind of ageism that has imposed the supposed need that the older adult “must” be “productive”, “young”, “vigorous”, posing the impossibility, in short, once again, of the older adult living spontaneously as an older adult. 展开更多

This study delves into the nuanced attitudes of the host community in Izmir,Turkey, towards Syrian refugees, employing a robust threat and benefit theoretical model. It scrutinizes the multifaceted factors contributing to perceived threats and benefits, elucidates the reasons behind the variation in these attitudes, identifies the individuals responsible for holding these perspectives, pinpoints the specific contexts in which they manifest, examines the temporal dimension of these attitudes, and dissects the profound impact they have on mutual adaptation processes and the formulation of migration policies.A diverse group of 34 participants from the host community actively engaged in semi-structured interviews, comprising 16 females and 18 males across an age spectrum spanning 19 to 64 years.Thematic analysis methodically uncovered that economic and demographic considerations prominently constitute the bedrock of perceived threats, while conversely, the study illuminated financial contributions as pivotal benefits. The in-depth understanding garnered from this study holds significant promise for fostering enduring mutual adaptation between the host and refugee communities, thereby cultivating a more harmonious coexistence.Additionally, this nuanced insight informs the strategic development of immigration policies, ensuring they align with the evolving dynamics of this complex relationship. 展开更多

It has been more than 30 years since AIDS was introduced in people's daily life, and it is a milestone that causes taboos, myths and prejudices. At that time, a patient told me his feelings, and he was very convincing: "I am horrified of living and afraid of dying." Three decades later, AIDS infection is not a death sentence anymore. First, doctors could make that infected patients did not die from the disease; then, that the medication which kept them alive was not so toxic. And finally, that the treatments were more comfortable. And once at this point, the possibility that the virus may disappear from the body is a more realistic goal than ever. The story of AIDS has changed and, for the first time, we can foresee in the short term the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Now it is not about whether the cure is possible or not, but about when we will have it. This current momentum, so hard to get, should be maintained. We have never been so close to achieving this goal. Although the end of the pandemic is close, this is not enough. It is worrying that some world leaders have absolved themselves of responsibility for not stopping or at least having understood the explosion of the pandemic as if it was a natural disaster. "Zero tolerance for HIV" requires a profound understanding of the stigma and discrimination of the infected people to finally get rid of the epidemic of fear and the devastation that the pandemic caused. 展开更多

At present,a great deal of historical gender prejudice is still visible in society. It is essential to eliminate these invisible barriers that impede achieving real equality between men and women. This article seeks to provide a vision of the perception of primary school girls and boys regarding the masculine and feminine genders.A questionnaire was given to groups of schoolchildren in different locations, including rural areas and large cities such as Madrid, the capital of Spain. In addition to detect prejudice toward one of the two genders, some of the most often repeated answers were taken into account. On several occasions, one of the two sexes,or the two,was linked to intelligence or to the ideal of beauty. However, differences were not observed in all cases.Comments are made on the most relevant data regarding the predisposition among children to link girls with more passive attitudes than boys. For many years, society has fought to achieve real equality between the two sexes. However, there is still a great deal to be done, and the younger generations have the responsibility of succeeding in having the two sexes live together in a more egalitarian society. The role of education is to encourage this process. 展开更多

Daisy Miller, among Henry James’masterpieces,is the novella which won him international fame.As some critics have analyzed,Daisy is a victim of the values of the Old World. In the author’s opinion,Daisy’s tragedy should be partly attributed to prejudice, which impedes the international communication between the newly wealthy Americans and the Europeanized Americans. In this sense, this paper focuses on an analysis of three forms of prejudice in Daisy Miller and tries to interpret Daisy’s tragic destiny from the perspective of intercultural communication. 展开更多

"Ambivalence" is a word which entered the language only in this century, the feminism reflected in Pride and Prejudice is ambivalent. Not only was Jane Austen's novel composed almost 200 years ago,but in it she seems to attack love-as-attraction,a notion presupposed in the idea of emotional ambivalence, which is reflected from Austen' subconciousness, from the main themes of the novel, from the characters' modelling and from four marriages in the novel, which also boasts the significance of studying ambivalent feminism in literature. In addition,it manifests the limitations and awakening of feminist consciousness. The thesis also applies the influence of Jane Austen's ambivalent feminism in the field of literature. 展开更多
