The Conflicts Between Primitiveness and Civilization:an Analysis of Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness, a chilling tale of horror set in the Congo during the period of rapid colonial expansion in the 19th century written by the renowned British novelist Joseph Conrad, is a world famous novella. Since its publication, it remains an indisputably classic text and arguably Conrad's finest work. And it has been regarded as a significant text in British literature because of its modernistic features, innovative narration and artistic style. Heart of Darkness deals with the highly disturbing effects of economic, social and political exploitation of European and African societies. It has inspired filmmakers and such authors as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gabriel Garica Marquez, D. H. Lawrence and Virginia,Woolf. This article is aimed to analyse it from the perspective of primitiveness and civilization. Through the analysis, readers can sense Conrad's attitude towards the two aspects.

The Call of the Wild by Jack London depicts the protagonist Buck’s transition,i.e.from a dog to a wolf,as well as those victims eliminated in the selecting of nature.All of these reflect the perpetual theme in this novel—social Darwinism which advo⁃cates“survival of the fittest”.

Personalized Lower Limb Gait Reconstruction Modeling Based on RFA-ProMP

Personalized gait curves are generated to enhance patient adaptability to gait trajectories used for passive training in the early stage of rehabilitation for hemiplegic patients.The article utilizes the random forest algorithm to construct a gait parameter model,which maps the relationship between parameters such as height,weight,age,gender,and gait speed,achieving prediction of key points on the gait curve.To enhance prediction accuracy,an attention mechanism is introduced into the algorithm to focus more on the main features.Meanwhile,to ensure high similarity between the reconstructed gait curve and the normal one,probabilistic motion primitives(ProMP)are used to learn the probability distribution of normal gait data and construct a gait trajectorymodel.Finally,using the specified step speed as input,select a reference gait trajectory from the learned trajectory,and reconstruct the curve of the reference trajectoryusing the gait keypoints predictedby the parametermodel toobtain the final curve.Simulation results demonstrate that the method proposed in this paper achieves 98%and 96%curve correlations when generating personalized lower limb gait curves for different patients,respectively,indicating its suitability for such tasks.

Approach to cardiac masses: Thinking inside and outside the box

In this editorial we comment on the article by Huffaker et al,published in the current issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases.Cardiac masses encompass a broad range of lesions,potentially involving any cardiac structure,and they can be either neoplastic or non-neoplastic.Primitive cardiac tumors are rare,while metastases and pseudotumors are relatively common.Cardiac masses frequently pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.Multimodality imaging is fundamental for differential diagnosis,treatment,and surgical planning.In particular cardiac magnetic resonance(CMR)is currently the gold standard for noninvasive tissue characterization.CMR allows evaluation of the relationship between the tumor and adjacent structures,detection of the degree of infiltration or expansion of the mass,and prediction of the possible malignancy of a mass with a high accuracy.Different flow charts of diagnostic work-up have been proposed,based on clinical,laboratory and imaging findings,with the aim of helping physicians approach the problem in a pragmatic way(“thinking inside the box”).However,the clinical complexity of cancer patients,in particular those with rare syndromes,requires a multidisciplinary approach and an open mind to go beyond flow charts and diagnostic algorithms,in other words the ability to“think outside the box”.

In the post-modernistic movement to seek for the cultural root,literary anthropologists refocus and explore the original therapeutic function of literature,and make great efforts to restore the essence of disciplines’theory that“literature is human science”to the real context of cultural integration.Based on this,the article intends to treat witch’s great traditional ritual as a starting point,aiming at building up and enriching the ethnography of literary therapy.However,in order to change roles from witches to writers and promote the primitive return of literary therapy,writers make little traditional creation of text focus on interpretation of“treating themselves”and“curing others”about literature’s function.

The Black Protests in Poland: An Example of an Anti-pastoral Revolution

Michel Foucault in Security, Territory, Population: Lectures at the Collège de France, 1977-1978 argues, that there has never been such a thing as an anti-pastoral revolution in Western societies. Yes, we have had revolutions against the disciplinary apparatus and legal devices of power (schools, hospitals, prisons) and we have had examples of revolutions against the economic foundations of social inequality, but there has never been a genuine revolution against pastoral power as a power relating to the conduct of individuals (but also entire social groups) and their disposition to “voluntary submission” to the will of external authorities. In my paper, I would like to reflect on this thesis, and taking it quite seriously, to look for examples of such revolutions. One of them is a women’s strike in Poland during the power of the conservative government of “Law and Justice”. Mainly referring to the texts of Silvia Federici and Paul Preciado, I will want to reflect on contemporary practices of reclaiming the body in contemporary capitalism. I will defend the thesis that regaining control over sexuality and reproduction means changing the material conditions of life and modern reproductive technologies.

Gradient descent decomposition of force-field motor primitives optogenetically elicited for motor mapping of the murine lumbosacral spinal cord

Generating diverse motor behaviors critical for survival is a challenge that confronts the central nervous system(CNS)of all animals.During movement execution,the CNS performs complex calculations to control a large number of neuromusculoskeletal elements.The theory of modular motor control proposes that spinal interneurons are organized in discrete modules that can be linearly combined to generate a variety of behavioral patterns.These modules have been previously represented as stimulus-evoked force fields(FFs)comprising isometric limb-endpoint forces across workspace locations.Here,we ask whether FFs elicited by different stimulations indeed represent the most elementary units of motor control or are themselves the combination of a limited number of even more fundamental motor modules.To probe for potentially more elementary modules,we optogenetically stimulated the lumbosacral spinal cord of intact and spinalized Thy1-ChR2 transgenic mice(n=21),eliciting FFs from as many single stimulation loci as possible(20-70 loci per mouse)at minimally necessary power.We found that the resulting varieties of FFs defied simple categorization with just a few clusters.We used gradient descent to further decompose the FFs into their underlying basic force fields(BFFs),whose linear combination explained FF variability.Across mice,we identified 4-5 BFFs with partially localizable but overlapping representations along the spinal cord.The BFFs were structured and topographically distributed in such a way that a rostral-to-caudal traveling wave of activity across the lumbosacral spinal cord may generate a swing-to-stance gait cycle.These BFFs may represent more rudimentary submodules that can be flexibly merged to produce a library of motor modules for building different motor behaviors.

THEORETICAL RESULTS ON THE EXISTENCE,REGULARITY AND ASYMPTOTIC STABILITY OF ENHANCED PULLBACK ATTRACTORS:APPLICATIONS TO 3D PRIMITIVE EQUATIONS

Several new concepts of enhanced pullback attractors for nonautonomous dynamical systems are introduced here by uniformly enhancing the compactness and attraction of the usual pullback attractors over an infinite forward time-interval under strong and weak topologies.Then we provide some theoretical results for the existence,regularity and asymptotic stability of these enhanced pullback attractors under general theoretical frameworks which can be applied to a large class of PDEs.The existence of these enhanced attractors is harder to obtain than the backward case[33],since it is difficult to uniformly control the long-time pullback behavior of the systems over the forward time-interval.As applications of our theoretical results,we consider the famous 3D primitive equations modelling the large-scale ocean and atmosphere dynamics,and prove the existence,regularity and asymptotic stability of the enhanced pullback attractors in V×V and H^(2)×H^(2) for the time-dependent forces which satisfy some weak conditions.

ON THE RIGOROUS MATHEMATICAL DERIVATION FOR THE VISCOUS PRIMITIVE EQUATIONS WITH DENSITY STRATIFICATION

In this paper, we rigorously derive the governing equations describing the motion of a stable stratified fluid, from the mathematical point of view. In particular, we prove that the scaled Boussinesq equations strongly converge to the viscous primitive equations with density stratification as the aspect ratio goes to zero, and the rate of convergence is of the same order as the aspect ratio. Moreover, in order to obtain this convergence result, we also establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the viscous primitive equations with density stratification.

Real-time collaborative design based on operation semantics in distributed CAD environment

This paper proposes a collaborative design model based on operation semantics in a distributed computer-aided design (CAD) environment. The goal is to reduce time consumption in data format conversion and the requirement of network bandwidth so as to improve the cooperative ability and the synchronization efficiency. Firstly, real-time collaborative design is reviewed and three kinds of real-time collaborative design models are discussed. Secondly, the concept of operation semantics is defined and the framework of an operation semantics model is presented. The operation semantics carries the original design data and actual operation process to express design intent and operation activity in conventional CAD systems. Finally, according to the operation semantics model, a CAD operation primitive is defined which can be retrieved from and mapped to the local CAD system operation commands; a distributed CAD collaborative architecture based on the model is presented, and an example is given to verify the model.

Appropriate Garden Design of Primitive Ecology Based on the Indigenization of Environmental Ethics
