ANALYSIS OF EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL POTENTIAL VORTICITY LOCATED AT SOUTH EDGE OF SOUTH ASIA HIGH ON INTENSIFICATION OF TROPICAL CYCLONES

The NCEP 1°×1°reanalysis of June-to-September dataset between 2002 to 2009 is used in this study to conduct statistical analysis of the relationship between the environmental potential vorticity(PV)on 150 hPa located at the south edge of South Asia High(SAH)and TCs making landfall.The results show that 23 of the TCs are affected by the PV on 150 hPa located at the south edge of SAH between 2002 to2009,and three TCs'center pressure decline after the high-value environmental PV moves to the center of the TCs.These three TCs are Senlaku(0216),Bilis(0604)and Linfa(0903).Through diagnostic analysis from the viewpoint of isolines,we determined the relationship between the intensification of these TCs and the PV anomaly at high levels;the isentropic surface is close to the high level’s PV anomaly under the influence of the 150-hPa PV anomaly,leading to the decline of isentropic surfaces on both sides of the PV anomaly.Then the warm core of the middle and high levels of the TC strengthens and PV increases at the middle level,and both of them are beneficial to the reinforcement of the cyclonic vorticity in the low level.As a result,the center pressure of the TC declines.According to Wu’s theory of Slantwise Vorticity Development(SVD),the incline of the isentropic surfaces leads to the development of vertical vorticity,contributing to the vertical motion and the release of the latent heat.Then the warm core of the TC strengthens and the TC strengthens,too.Otherwise,piecewise PV inversion also shows that the high-level PV influences the mid-level more than the low level. 展开更多

2019年8月18~22日,高原东侧到四川盆地西部发生的一次暴雨过程,其与穿透性对流的发生发展密切相关。为揭示此次穿透性对流的形成机理和过程,本文利用欧洲中心再分析资料ERA5以及高分辨数值模式(WRF)的模拟结果进行了分析。结果表明,此... 2019年8月18~22日,高原东侧到四川盆地西部发生的一次暴雨过程,其与穿透性对流的发生发展密切相关。为揭示此次穿透性对流的形成机理和过程,本文利用欧洲中心再分析资料ERA5以及高分辨数值模式(WRF)的模拟结果进行了分析。结果表明,此次穿透性对流过程发生在中国沿海地区大范围对流层顶折叠导致盆地以东的上空出现平流层位涡(PV)下传的特殊天气背景下。穿透性对流的形成主要分为三个阶段:(1)中低层对流的触发。由于大陆高压西伸,四川盆地附近气压梯度加强引起低空急流发展,在其左侧产生气旋性切变,同时引起与高原东南侧大地形正交的抬升气流分量增强。地形动力抬升叠加气流辐合抬升在不稳定层结下触发对流。(2)对流层高层上升运动发展。这主要与湍流扩散导致的平流层持续下传的PV气团在非绝热加热作用下的发展有关。盆地西侧对流发展引起的非绝热加热作用导致高层净增温垂直梯度增强,进而导致了高层局地正PV的加强。高层东风气流背景下,正PV异常的右侧为上升运动,使得300 hPa以上至下平流层上升运动的发展增强。(3)盆地附近的高中低层上升运动垂直耦合叠加,形成穿透性对流。中尺度对流系统层状模态的发展以及干燥环境下水汽的蒸发冷却导致300 hPa至600 hPa出现下沉运动。下沉运动造成的局地干冷侵入,既加强了上空“下湿上干”的不稳定层结,也加强了中低层的气流辐合,导致原中层300~600 hPa附近的下沉运动转为上升运动。低层由于正涡度倾斜发展,上升运动得以维持。由此,四川盆地上空的上升运动出现整层的垂直叠加耦合,表现为从对流层低层到平流层底的一致性上升运动,穿透性对流形成,导致后期降水增强。 展开更多

从北半球不同地区的4个阻塞高压个例,研究了阻塞高压维持机制及其地域性差异。对阻塞高压区域300hPa时间平均准地转让涡低值区的维持机制的分析表明,该位涡低值区的维持机制存在显著的地域性差异。其中,在2个太平洋阻高个例... 从北半球不同地区的4个阻塞高压个例,研究了阻塞高压维持机制及其地域性差异。对阻塞高压区域300hPa时间平均准地转让涡低值区的维持机制的分析表明,该位涡低值区的维持机制存在显著的地域性差异。其中,在2个太平洋阻高个例中,时间平均流的位涡平流使低位涡向阻高西北部输送,从而有利于位涡低值区经向度的维持;时变扰动的位涡输送则有抵消平均流作用的倾向,从而对位涡低值区的维持起耗散作用。在大西洋和东亚阻高个例中,平均流的位涡平流使低位涡区向东移动,而时变扰动的位涡输送则有抵消平均流位涡平流的作用,从而有利于位涡低值区在原地稳定维持。以上主要是相对涡度输送的差异所致。等熵面Ertel位涡分析表明,阻高区域330K时间平均等熵位涡低值区的维持机制与300hPa时间平均准地转位涡低值区的维持机制十分相似,从而表明以上等压面准地转位涡分析可以近似用来代表等熵Ertel位涡分析。 展开更多

对2005年8月5日16时(UTC,下同)至6日00时发生的一次台风前部飑线过程进行了数值模拟,分析表明:台前飑线在母体台风和副高之间的湿区生成。台风为这次台前飑线过程提供了有利的条件,包括强的低空急流输送充沛的水汽,强的不稳定环境产生... 对2005年8月5日16时(UTC,下同)至6日00时发生的一次台风前部飑线过程进行了数值模拟,分析表明:台前飑线在母体台风和副高之间的湿区生成。台风为这次台前飑线过程提供了有利的条件,包括强的低空急流输送充沛的水汽,强的不稳定环境产生大的对流有效位能以及强的地表辐合,使得初始的离散的对流单体组织发展形成台前飑线。成熟时期的台前飑线虽然比中纬度和热带飑线的变压强度小,但是具有更强的低层暖湿空气入流,中层的入流范围也更加宽广。敏感性试验结果表明:台风强度越强,其台前飑线的回波强度越强,移动速度更快,生命史也更长。强台风使得低空垂直风切变更大,有利于台前飑线的生成和发展,在台前飑线发展成熟后,低空垂直风切变强度减小,不利于台前飑线的维持,加之低空水汽输送的减少,使其逐渐趋向衰亡。 展开更多

通过卫星资料分析台风"风神"路径预报之所以出现较大的偏差,可能是由于"风神"西侧中尺度对流系统引起的。为了更好地研究中尺度对流系统对台风的影响,利用中尺度非静力数值模式WRF对"风神"的移动过程开... 通过卫星资料分析台风"风神"路径预报之所以出现较大的偏差,可能是由于"风神"西侧中尺度对流系统引起的。为了更好地研究中尺度对流系统对台风的影响,利用中尺度非静力数值模式WRF对"风神"的移动过程开展了高分辨率数值模拟,模拟采用双重嵌套,最高分辨率6km,共积分78h。利用模拟资料,采用PV-ω分部位涡反演方法定量分析了台风外围中尺度对流系统对台风运动的影响,认为PV-ω分部位涡反演方法能够很好地分离出台风外围中尺度对流系统,其对台风引导气流的贡献可达到20%左右。为验证中尺度对流系统的影响,用模式积分的方法,通过3组模拟实验,发现中尺度对流系统使台风路径偏左或偏右可能随着环境引导气流方向而改变,而在此个例中的中尺度对流系统会使得台风向西和向极移动得更远。对比研究了不同中尺度对流系统对台风的影响,发现在"风神"移动过程中,中尺度对流系统之所以引起较大影响是因为中尺度对流系统与台风相对位置变化不大所致。 展开更多

利用2002—2009年8年中6、7、8、9月的NCEP 1°×1°再分析资料对登陆我国大陆的台风与150 hPa高层位涡的关系进行统计,8年中共有23个台风受到150 hPa南亚高压南部边缘位涡的影响。其中3个台风(0216"森拉克"、060... 利用2002—2009年8年中6、7、8、9月的NCEP 1°×1°再分析资料对登陆我国大陆的台风与150 hPa高层位涡的关系进行统计,8年中共有23个台风受到150 hPa南亚高压南部边缘位涡的影响。其中3个台风(0216"森拉克"、0604"碧利斯"、0903"莲花"),在其发展初期在南亚高压南部的大值环境位涡进入台风中心后,台风中心气压下降。通过诊断分析从等值线的角度得出高层位涡与此类台风发展的关系,在150 hPa高层正位涡异常的作用下,等熵面向大值位涡处汇聚,这种形式可使正位涡异常区两侧的等熵面向下倾斜,从而引起台风中高层的暖中心加强以及中层位涡增大,中层的位涡增大以及暖中心的出现又有利于低层气旋性涡度增长,导致台风中心气压下降,使台风强度增强。根据吴国雄的倾斜涡度发展(SVD)理论,其原因可能是等熵面倾斜使垂直涡度发展,从而加强对流运动潜热释放使台风暖心加强,使得台风的强度加强。通过位涡反演试验也证实了高层位涡对中层位涡发展的影响大于低层。 展开更多

利用高分辨率WRF模式对2010年13号超强台风"鲇鱼"移入南海以后的路径突变过程进行数值模拟,较好模拟出了台风由缓慢西行转为突然北上的过程。利用模拟资料,诊断分析了路径突变前期、突变时和突变后的不同高度上等熵位涡的分... 利用高分辨率WRF模式对2010年13号超强台风"鲇鱼"移入南海以后的路径突变过程进行数值模拟,较好模拟出了台风由缓慢西行转为突然北上的过程。利用模拟资料,诊断分析了路径突变前期、突变时和突变后的不同高度上等熵位涡的分布特征。路径突变前期和后期不同高度上的等熵位涡的对称结构较明显;路径突变时各个层次上的位涡等熵分布均表现出明显非对称性。进一步对比分析了该路径突变过程前后台风对流发展和能量分布的变化,结果验证了等熵位涡结构的演变情况。非对称风场的切变存在一次逆时针方向倾斜而后恢复的过程,整层大气动能的分布也由近似轴对称发展为东部强于西部的显著的非对称。位于台风环流东南侧的非对称扰动所引起的平流和次级环流输送有助于台风路径由西行转为北上,这可能是环境流场偏弱条件下台风路径转折的有利触发机制。 展开更多

利用NCAR/NCEP再分析资料及国家气象信息中心30年气候平均降水资料,通过动力诊断与分析手段研究了2007年6—7月发生在我国淮河流域的暴雨。结果表明,淮河流域的环流垂直结构和降水有着非常好的对应关系。暴雨期间,鄂霍茨克海阻高与乌拉... 利用NCAR/NCEP再分析资料及国家气象信息中心30年气候平均降水资料,通过动力诊断与分析手段研究了2007年6—7月发生在我国淮河流域的暴雨。结果表明,淮河流域的环流垂直结构和降水有着非常好的对应关系。暴雨期间,鄂霍茨克海阻高与乌拉尔山阻高这种双阻高形势对于淮河流域的持续降水提供了很好的条件;南亚高压高层(200 hPa)基本为正散度区,低层(850 hPa)为负散度区,上下层强烈的抽吸结构对暴雨的发生也是非常有利的条件,同时,在淮河暴雨期问,南亚高压(200 hPa)与500 hPa西太平洋副热带高压有着相向而行的移动路径;位涡对于分析冷空气的活动,有着比较清晰的意义,暴雨发生前,有明显的正位涡异常从高纬度向低纬度伸展。大气非绝热加热分析结果显示,视热源和视水汽汇两者的高值中心与相应时段暴雨中心位置一致。 展开更多

Four observed blocking anticyclones in different regions of the Northern Hemisphere are in- vestigated.Analyses show that there exist distinct differences in the maintenance of the time-mean quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity(PV)low in 300 hPa within blocking areas.In two Pacific blocking cases,the PV advection by time-mean flow tends to flow the PV low to northwestern part of the blocking highs,and thus is beneficial to the maintenance of the blockings'strength.The transfer by transient eddies acts to balance the effect of the time-mean flow.In the Atlantic and Alaska blocking cases,however,the advection of mean flow tends to flow the PV low eastward. The PV transfer by transient eddies acts to flow potential vorticity low to the western part of the blocking ridges and also to balance the time-mean flow's effect.Thus,in the latter two cases,it is the transfer by the transient eddies that acts to maintain the blockings. 展开更多

A Case Study on a Quasi-Stationary Meiyu Front Bringing About Continuous Rainstorms with Piecewise Potential Vorticity Inversion 被引量:3

A 4-day persistent rainstorm resulting in serious flooding disasters occurred in the north of Fujian Province under the influences of a quasi-stationary Meiyu front during 5-8 June 2006. With 1°× 1° latitude and longitude NCEP reanalysis data and the ground surface rainfall, using the potential vorticity (PV) analysis and PV inversion method, the evolution of main synoptic systems, and the corresponding PV and PV perturbation (or PV anomalies) and their relationship with heavy rainfall along the Meiyu front are analyzed in order to investigate the physical mechanism of the formation, development, and maintenance of the Meiyu front. Furthermore, the PV perturbations related to different physics are separated to investigate their different roles in the formation and development of the Meiyu front. The results show: the formation and persistence of the Meiyu front in a quasi-WE orientation are mainly due to the maintenance of the high-pressure systems in its south/north sides (the West Pacific subtropical high/ the high pressure band extending from the Korean Peninsula to east of North China). The Meiyu front is closely associated with the PV in the lower troposphere. The location of the positive PV perturbation on the Meiyu front matches well with the main heavy rainfall area along the Meiyu front. The PV inversion reveals that the balanced winds satisfying the nonlinear balanced assumption represent to a large extent the real atmospheric flow and its evolution basically reflects the variation of stream flow associated with the Meiyu front. The unbalanced flow forms the convergence band of the Meiyu front and it mainly comes from the high-pressure system in the north side of the Meiyu front. The positive PV perturbation related to latent heat release in the middle-lower troposphere is one of the main factors influencing the formation and development of the Meiyu front. The positive vorticity band from the total balanced winds is in accordance with the Meiyu front band and the magnitude of the positive vorticity from the balanced wind is very close to that from real winds. The PV perturbation in the boundary layer is to a certain degree favorable for the formation and development of Meiyu front. In general, the lower boundary potential temperature perturbation is not beneficial to the formation and development, which is attributed to the relatively low surface temperature due to surface evaporation and solar short-wave radiation reduction shaded by clouds on the Meiyu front band, however, it has some diurnal variation. The effect of PV perturbation in the upper troposphere on the formation and development of the Meiuyu front is relatively weaker than others' and not beneficial to the formation and development of the Meiyu front, but it is enhanced in the period of Meiyu front's fast southward movement when the deep North China trough develops and moves southeastward. Rest PV perturbation unrelated to latent heat release in the middle-lower troposphere plays a certain role in the Meiyu front's fast southward movement. Lastly, it should be pointed out that the different PV perturbations maybe play a different role in different stages of the Meiyu front development. 展开更多

SPV is the dot product of vorticity and the potential vorticity(PV) gradient, and is proven conservative for a compressible, adiabatic and frictionless atmosphere. Research shows that the new invariant may be used to indicate the evolution of PV, because SPV includes all the information that determines PV evolution: the wind field, and the PV gradient. Furthermore, SPV is capable of diagnosing heavy precipitation because of the strong signals it presents in areas of heavy rainfall. SPV also shows great potential as a comprehensive conserved quantity for indicating the dynamical tropopause and baroclinic instability. 展开更多

In this paper,by carrying out sensitivity tests of initial conditions and diagnostic analysis of physical fields,the impact factors and the physical mechanism of the unusual track of Morakot in the Taiwan Strait are discussed and examined based on the potential vorticity(PV)inversion.The diagnostic results of NCEP data showed that Morakot's track was mainly steered by the subtropical high.The breaking of a high-pressure zone was the main cause for the northward turn of Morakot.A sensitivity test of initial conditions showed that the existence of upper-level trough was the leading factor for the breaking of the high-pressure zone.When the intensity was strengthened of the upper-level trough at initial time,the high-pressure zone would break ahead of time,leading to the early northward turn of Morakot.Conversely,when the intensity was weakened,the breaking of the high-pressure zone would be delayed.Especially,when the intensity was weakened to a certain extent,the high-pressure zone would not break.The typhoon,steered by the easterly flow to the south of the high-pressure zone,would keep moving westward,with no turn in the test.The diagnostic analysis of the physical fields based on the sensitivity test revealed that positive vorticity advection and cold advection associated with the upper-level trough weakened the intensity of the high-pressure zone.The upper-level trough affected typhoon's track indirectly by influencing the high-pressure zone. 展开更多

Long-Term Trend in Potential Vorticity Intrusion Events over the Pacific Ocean: Role of Global Mean Temperature Rise 被引量:1

In this study, we examine a long-term increasing trend in subtropical potential vorticity (PV) intrusion events over the Pacific Ocean in relation to the global mean temperature rise, based on multiple reaualysis datasets. The fre- quency of the PV intrusions is closely related to the upper-tropospheric equatorial westerly duct and the subtropical jet (STJ). An overall strengthening of the westerly duct and weakening of the STJ are found to be driven by the warming-induced strengthening of Walker circulation and regional changes in Hadley circulation on multi-dccadal timescalc, leading to an increase in the PV intrusion frequency over the tropics. The results are robust in all datasets. The multi-decadal strengthening in the Pacific Walker circulation is consistent with the global mean temperature rise. In this way, the PV intrusions are correlated with the wanning related global mean temperuate rise. When the interan- nual variability of ENSO is removed from the intrusion time series, the long-term trend in PV intrusions due to ex- ternal forcing associated with anthropogenic warming (global mean temperature rise) becomes clearer. The link between the global mean temperature rise and intrusion frequency is further verified by performing a correlation ana- lysis between the two. The significant (〉 95%) correlation coefficient is 0.85, 0.94, 0.84, 0.83, and 0.84 for ERA-40, ERA-Interim, NCEP-NCAR, JRA-55, and JRA-25, respectively. This unequivocally indicates that the global mean temperature rise can explain around 69%--88% of the variance related to the lung-term increase in PV intrusion fre- quency over the Pacific Ocean. 展开更多

Based on the in situ XBT and other data sets, by analyzing the seasonal cycle of the mixed layer depth (MLD) and using the conservative potential vorticity (PV) as a tool, a clear description of the formation process of the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (NPSTMW) is presented for explaining the well known 'Stommel Demon'. The forming of NPSTMW reflects well the ventilation process of the isotherms of the permanent thermocline. The formation process can be divided into the 'ventilation' phase and the 'formation' phase. In the first phase (October-March), with large heat losses at the sea surface from October, the mixed layer deepens and correspondingly, the water mass with low PV emerges and sinks. After continual cooling from October to March, the mixed layer reaches its maximum value ( >300 m) in March. Then, in the second phase (April-June), the mixed layer shoals rapidly from April, a large part of the low PV water mass is sheltered from further air-sea interaction by the emerging seasonal thermocline, and thus forms new NPSTMW. Further analysis indicates that the formation region of warm NPSTMW (17-18℃) is limited between 140°-150°E, while the relatively cold NPSTMW (16-17℃) originates in a wider longitude range (140°-170°E).Climate features of NPSTMW are presented with the use of climatological Levitus (1994 a, b) dataset. It is shown that NPSTMW lies in the region of (130°-170°E, 22°-34°N) with core temperature ranging from about 16-19℃ and potential density around 25-25.8σθ NPSTMW has a three-dimensional structure lying below the seasonal thermocline (about 100 m deep) and reaches almost to 350m depths. 展开更多
