BACKGROUND Epilepsy is a nervous system disease characterized by recurrent attacks,a long disease course, and an unfavorable prognosis. It is associated with an enduring therapeutic process, and finding a cure has been difficult.Patients with epilepsy are predisposed to adverse moods, such as resistance, anxiety, nervousness, and anxiety, which compromise treatment compliance and overall efficacy.AIM To explored the influence of intensive psychological intervention on treatment compliance, psychological status, and quality of life(QOL)of patients with epilepsy.METHODS The clinical data of 105 patients with epilepsy admitted between December 2019 and July 2023 were retrospectively analyzed, including those of 50 patients who underwent routine intervention(control group)and 55 who underwent intensive psychological intervention(research group).Treatment compliance, psychological status based on the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Depression Scale Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS)scores, hope level assessed using the Herth Hope Scale(HHS),psychological resilience evaluated using the Psychological Resilience Scale, and QOL determined using the QOL in Epilepsy-31 Inventory(QOLIE-31)were comparatively analyzed.RESULTS Treatment compliance in the research group was 85.5%,which is significantly better than the 68.0%of the control group. No notable intergroup differences in preinterventional SAS and SDS scores were identified(P>0.05);however,after the intervention, the SAS and SDS scores decreased significantly in the two groups, especially in the research group(P<0.05).The two groups also exhibited no significant differences in preinterventional HHS,Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC),and QOLIE-31 scores(P>0.05).After 6 months of intervention, the research group showed evidently higher HHS,CD-RISC,tenacity,optimism,strength,and QOLIE-31 scores(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Intensive psychological intervention enhances treatment compliance, psychological status, and QOL of patients with epilepsy. 展开更多

BACKGROUND On January 22,2020,Macao reported its first case of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)infection.By August 2021,the situation had escalated into a crisis of community transmission. In response, the government launched a recruitment campaign seeking assistance and services of healthcare workers(HCWs)from the private sector throughout Macao. These participants faced concerns about their own health and that of their families,as well as the responsibility of maintaining public health and wellness. This study aims to determine whether the ongoing epidemic has caused them physical and psychological distress.AIM To examine the influence of COVID-19 on the sleep quality and psychological status of HCWs in private institutions in Macao during the pandemic.METHODS Data were collected from December 2020 to January 2022.Two consecutive surveys were conducted. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)scale,Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS),and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS)were employed as investigation tools.RESULTS In the first-stage survey,32%of HCWs experienced a sleep disorder, compared to 28.45%in the second-stage survey.A total of 31.25%of HCWs in the first-stage survey and 28.03%in the second had varying degrees of anxiety.A total of 50.00%of HCWs in the first-stage survey and 50.63%in the second experienced varying degrees of depression. No difference in PSQI scores,SAS scores,or SDS scores were observed between the two surveys, indicating that the COVID-19 epidemic influenced the sleep quality and psychological status of HCWs.The negative influence persisted over both periods but did not increase remarkably for more than a year. However,a positive correlation was observed between the PSQI,SAS,and SDS scores(r=0.428-0.775,P<0.01),indicating that when one of these states deteriorated, the other two tended to deteriorate as well.CONCLUSION The sleep quality, anxiety, and depression of HCWs in private institution in Macao were affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. While these factors did not deteriorate significantly, the negative effects persisted for a year and remained noteworthy. 展开更多

Internet gaming disorder(IGD)among junior high school students is an increasingly prominent mental health concern. It is important to look for influences behind internet gaming disorder tendency(IGDT)in the junior high school student population. The present study aimed to reveal the explanatory mechanisms underlying the association between parental psychological control(PPC)and internet gaming disorder tendency among junior high school students by testing the mediating role of core self-evaluation(CSE)and the moderating role of intentional self-regulation(ISR).Participants in present study were 735 Chinese junior high school students who completed offline self-report questionnaires on parental psychological control, core self-evaluation,intentional self-regulation,and Internet gaming disorder tendency.Analyses were conducted via mediation and moderated mediation. The results showed that:(1)Parental psychological control was positively related to junior high school students’Internet gaming disorder tendency.Core self-evaluation,and intentional self-regulation were negatively related to junior high school students’Internet gaming disorder tendency,respectively.(2)Core self-evaluation partially mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and junior high school students’Internet gaming disorder tendency.(3)Intentional self-regulation moderated the association between parental psychological control and Internet gaming disorder tendency,as well as the relationships between parental psychological control and core self-evaluation and core self-evaluation and Internet gaming disorder tendency in the mediated model.Based on these findings,we believe that there is a need to weaken parental psychological control, strengthen junior high school students’core self-evaluation and intentional self-regulation,and to recognize the important role of parents as well as their children’s personal positive traits in the healthy development of junior high school students. 展开更多

The present study analyzes the psychological adaptation of parents with children having congenital disabilities. The study included 83 men and 96 women, who were parents of children with severe spina bifida, cerebral palsy, cleft lip and cleft palate. The Millon Index of Personality Styles was used to identify the most distinctive personality styles of parents caring for a child with a chronic disability and parental psychological adjustment. We also investigated if personality profiles differ by gender, and educational and socioeconomic level. The personality styles identified may serve as indicators of the way parents adapt to the child with a congenital disability. The results also suggest that a child’s disability has a differential impact on men and women. Gender issues are evaluated, as well as any repercussions these may have on women. 展开更多

AIM: To assess the effects of poor nutritional and psychological status on tolerance of cancer treatment and the recovery of physical performance status in patients with gastrointestinal cancer. METHODS: An epidemiological survey with respect to nutritional and psychological status in patients with gastrointestinal cancer was conducted among 182 operated patients in four provincial-level hospitals from December 2005 to June 2006. The food frequency survey method, state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) and depression status inventory (DSI) were used to obtain information about the diet and psychological status in the patients. Nutritional status in the participants was reflected by serum albumin (Alb), hemoglobin (HB) and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: Alb, protein intake and anxiety were associated with the severity of side effects of treatment. The adjusted relative risk (RR) for Alb, protein intake and anxiety was 3.30 (95% CI: 1.08, 10.10, P = 0.03), 3.25 (95% CI: 1.06, 9.90, P = 0.04) and 1.48 (95% CI: 1.29, 1.70, P < 0.0001), respectively. Moreover, calorie intake, HB and depression were associated with the recovery of physical performance status in the patients. Adjusted relative risk was 2.12 (95% CI: 1.09, 4.03, P = 0.028), 2.05 (95% CI: 1.08, 3.88, P =0.026) and 1.07 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.12, P = 0.007), respectively. CONCLUSION: Both poor nutrition status and psychological status are independent risk factors for severe side effects of cancer treatment, and have impact on the recovery of physical performance status in patients after treatment. 展开更多

Psychological stress and illness among hospital residences have been subject to increasing scientific scrutiny;however very few studies have been published to describe the extent of health status and psychological stresses in residents in different specialties especially in our country that our study was mainly focused on this subject. Methods: The study subjects were medical residents in public hospitals covering 14 different specialties in Tehran in 2007. A self-administered questionnaire elicited information related to socio-demographic profile, specialty, duty hours, sleep quality, physical activity level, number of night shifts per month, mood changes, sense of depression after night shifts, fatigue, use of antidepressant and tranquilizer, and their opinion regarding their health status on a 4-point Likert scale. Results: 66.7% of participants were male with the mean age of 32.9 ± 4.2 years. 62.1% of the residents felt mood changes after nightly shifts that could adversely affect their daily living, quality of work, and social relationships. The overall prevalence of the use of antidepressant drugs was 20.0% which was significantly higher in women than men. Also, 24.4% of them reported consumption of sedative and hypnotic drugs. 15.6% reported complete healthy status while 9.4% reported partial illness. Complete healthy status was more reported among the residents of anesthesiology and pediatrics while illness was more reported by residents in pathology field. Residents’ satisfaction with their status was positively correlated with the year of residency and marriage, while dissatisfaction was more reported in divorced ones as well as in those with higher number of nightly shifts. Conclusion: Notable number of hospital residents in Iran experience significant stressors and emotional and mental health problems. Among all studies factors type of specialty, year of residency, female gender, number of nightly shifts, and single marital status were more important than other factors. 展开更多

This multivariate study investigated whether Parental Support, Teacher Support, and Academic Motivation mediate the relationship between Parental Status (i.e., children from single or both parents homes) and Academic Performance, The research design used for the study was a cross sectional survey using the quantitative approach. Data set from 250 primary school pupils from the Effutu Municipality were analysed using partial correlation and multiple regression analytical techniques. Among the study findings, that were when the effects of Parental Status were controlled for, Parental Support, Teacher Support, and Academic Motivation still related significantly to Academic Performance. Among the conclusions of the findings are that, whether the child was from a single or both parent home was not important with regard to his or her academic performance but rather it was the quality of support that the child gets from whoever is doing the parenting, teacher support and the child's own academic motivation that were important to determine the child's Academic Performance. The study also found that Parental Support was the best predictor of the pupils' Academic Performance out of the three factors includingTeacher Support and Academic Motivation. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Sustaining the mental health of autistic children’s parents can be demanding.AIM To determine the effect of remote support courses on the mental health of parents and the development of autistic children.METHODS Parents of 140 autistic children were randomly assigned to two groups receiving a 2-week intervention:The control group received caregiver-mediated intervention(CMI);the experimental group received CMI with remote family psychological support courses(R-FPSC).The Parenting Stress Index-Short Form,Parenting Sense of Competence Scale,Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7,and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 were used to measure parents’mental health. The Childhood Autism Rating Scale and Gesell Developmental Schedules were used to evaluate children’s development.RESULTS Improved parenting stress, sense of competence, depression, and anxiety were found in both groups, but improvements in parenting stress(81.10±19.76 vs 92.10±19.26,P<0.01)and sense of competence(68.83±11.23 vs 63.91±10.86,P<0.01)were greater in the experimental group, although the experimental group showed no significant reduction in depression or anxiety.Children’s development did not differ significantly between the groups at follow-up;however,experimental group parents exhibited a short-term increase in training enthusiasm(12.78±3.16 vs 11.57±3.15,P<0.05).CONCLUSION Integrating R-FPSC with CMI may be effective in reducing parenting stress, enhancing parents’sense of competence, and increasing parents'training enthusiasm. 展开更多

An authoritative parenting style has been shown to promote children’s emotion regulation in European-American family studies. However, little is known about how sleep problems and the child’s sibling status in Chinese families affect this relationship.Based on family system theory, this study attempts to better understand the relationship between authoritative parenting style and emotion regulation.Mothers of preschool children in Chinese kindergartens completed questionnaires about their children’s sleep habits, their authoritative parenting styles, and children’s emotion regulation.A total of 531 children participated in this study. Results showed that authoritative parenting was positively associated with emotional regulation.Sleep problems mediated the effects of authoritative parenting style on emotion regulation. The child’s sibling status moderated the mediating effects of sleep problems in authoritative parenting and emotion regulation relationships.Specifically, the relationship between the authoritative parenting style and sleep problems was significant for only children, while birth order had no significant influence on the authoritative parenting style and sleep problems in two-child families. These findings suggest that a lowauthoritative parenting style predicts low emotion regulation through sleep problems, and this depends on the child’s sibling status, indicating that children without siblings may impair emotion regulation due to increased sleep problems. 展开更多

Social support is an essential source of support for preschool children’s fathers to alleviate parenting anxiety, deal with parenting pressure, improve parenting methods, and enhance parenting sense of competence.Psychological capital serves as a critical psychological resource for preschoolers’fathers, helping them cope with parenting stress and enhancing parenting efficacy. To explore the mediating mechanism of psychological capital between social support and the parenting sense of competence of preschoolers’fathers, this study employs stratified sampling to survey 678 fathers from three cities of Henan province in China. The survey instruments mainly consist of the Social Support Rating Scale,Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Parenting Sense of Competence Scale.Research findings show that social support, psychological capital, and fathers’parenting sense of competence are at the middle level.Significant positive correlations exist among social support, psychological capital, and parenting sense of competence.Social support can positively predict fathers’parenting sense of competence, while psychological capital partially mediates between social support and parenting sense of competence. Therefore,it is possible to increase social support for preschool children’s fathers and improve their psychological capital to relieve their parenting pressure, enhance their parenting participation, and strengthen their parenting sense of competence. 展开更多
