Communalism as a Theory of Justice and the Human Person in African Culture

Discussions about justice in cross-cultural context give rise to assorted theories. In this paper, issues surrounding communalism as a theory of justice in African culture will be examined with a view to show that its principles of care and fellow feeling could be worked out to address the problem of alienation from society characterizing some members of the contemporary African society. Recognition of the social dynamics of human society and relationships is of essence to communalism. As a theory of justice and a world view, communalism describes the human being as ＂being with others＂ and what that should be. The expression, ＂I am because we are, and because we are, I am＂ is the driving force of the communalistic society. Such a society is characterized by care, love, belongingness, solidarity, and interconnectedness. The aim of this paper is to highlight the manifestations of the idea of justice in communalism using leadership or governance, consensus in decision making, moral rules, punishment for wrong doing, and the equitable distribution of resources. It also aims to show that the communalist idea of justice is integrationist in outlook being constitutive of political and socio-economic elements, which the individual enjoys in practical terms as opposed to the paper rights, which citizens in much of the contemporary societies enjoy. The paper notes that drastic changes have occurred in the socio-economic relations within African societies as a consequence of acculturation subsequent to European colonization and these have had far reaching consequences.

Breast Cancer MCF-7 Cell Spheroid Culture for Drug Discovery and Development

In vitro 3D cancer spheroids (tumoroids) exhibit a drug resistance profile similar to that found in solid tumors. 3D spheroid culture methods recreate more physiologically relevant microenvironments for cells. Therefore, these models are more appropriate for cancer drug screening. We have recently developed a protocol for MCF-7 cell spheroid culture, and used this method to test the effects of different types of drugs on this estrogen-dependent breast cancer cell spheroid. Our results demonstrated that MCF-7 cells can grow spheroid in medium using a low attachment plate. We managed to grow one spheroid in each well, and the spheroid can grow over a month, the size of the spheroid can grow over a hundred times in volume. Our targeted drug experimental results suggest that estrogen sulfotransferase, steroid sulfatase, and G protein-coupled estrogen receptor may play critical roles in MCF-7 cell spheroid growth, while estrogen receptors α and β may not play an essential role in MCF-7 spheroid growth. Organoids are the miniatures of in vivo tissues and reiterate the in vivo microenvironment of a specific organ, best fit for the in vitro studies of diseases and drug development. Tumoroid, developed from cancer cell lines or patients’ tumor tissue, is the best in vitro model of in vivo tumors. 3D spheroid technology will be the best future method for drug development of cancers and other diseases. Our reported method can be developed clinically to develop personalized drugs when the patient’s tumor tissues are used to develop a spheroid culture for drug screening.

It conveys Chinese culture from three perspectives: the unique concepts, the typical thinking mode, and distinctive Chinese personality. In this way, China English enhances the introduction of Chinese culture,thus promoting the soft power of China.

On the Role of Confucian Ethical Thoughts in the Formation of Psychological Personality

As the mainstream ideology in the traditional Chinese social structure,Confucian ethical thoughts have existed for a long time and influenced the social ethical structure and the formation of cultural psychology and personality of Chinese people significantly.Taking the internal relation of the role of Confucian ethical thoughts in the formation of personality as a point of penetration,this paper discusses the internal relation between the shaping of social consciousness by Confucian ethical thoughts and the formation of personality as well as its influence mode,revealing the construction process of psychological personality by Confucian culture.On this basis,we explore the advantages of Confucian social ethics by making full use of its positive factors and promote the improvement of individual's personality with social psychology.

Personal, Situational and Socio-Cultural Factors as Correlates of Intimate Partner Abuse in Nigeria

This study established the relationships between personal, situational and socio-cultural factors and intimate partner abuse among couples in Nigeria. A multiple regression statistical procedure was employed in analyzing the data collected from 200 participants randomly selected from five ministries in Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Results obtained indicated that the three variables when combined effectively predicted intimate partner abuse (F-ratio of 5.756 significant at 0.05 alpha level). Taken separately, situational and socio-cultural factors contributed significantly to the prediction (t = 2.146, p t = 2.284, p (t = 1.705, p > 0.05). On the basis of these findings it was suggested that counselling psychologists should design intervention strategies to promote life-skills training in schools and out-of-schools settings. These include age-appropriate content on sexuality, conflict resolution, building healthy relationships and personal safety. Also, it was suggested that couples should be informed on the long-term health and social consequences of physical and sexual abuse.

A Study on the Participation of Foreign Students in Local Cultural and Folk Activities in Wenzhou

The number of foreign students studying in Wenzhou, China has increased dramatically as a result of the Belt and Road Initiative. Learning the motivations and leisure constraints of foreign students' participation in local cultural and folk activities in Wenzhou is beneficial to promoting cultural adaptation, strengthening Chinese cultural self-confidence, and improving Wenzhou's international image. Based on the hierarchical model of leisure constraints (personal constraints, interpersonal constraints, and structural constraints), this study has tended to focus on the leisure constraints for foreign students participating in local folk and cultural activities in Wenzhou. A total of seven participants were included in the analysis.

与中华文化及其范围内各种地域文化一样,闽南文化是一种多元结构。其根源在于闽南人的族群来源是多元的,包括土著越人、南迁汉人及来自湖南的“蛮”人(以地域命名则称为“武陵蛮”、“五溪蛮”,以信仰命名则称为“槃瓠蛮”)、来自海外的“番客”等多种成分;其地形、地貌与生态环境及经济类型也是多元的,地形包含中山、低山、丘陵、台地和平原,相应地,经济包括山林经济、大田稻作、沿海养殖捕捞渔业及海上商贸等基本类型。族群来源与地理环境及经济类型的多元,决定了闽南人人文性格的多元化,其基本面貌是兼容并包、崇正守礼、开拓进取、坚韧俭朴。其中的精华,需要我们积极弘扬,某些消极因素,则应该予以批判改造。

内蒙古烧卖传说的叙事历史悠久,对“烧卖——内蒙古味道”这一饮食文化符号的建构起到了重要作用。民间传说在当代的叙事实践十分复杂,文章从内蒙古烧卖传说在当代的个人化叙事及官方叙事加以论述。个人叙事是集体叙事下的个人化表达,包括个人日常口头叙述、歌曲表达和多样性的自媒体叙事。官方叙事集中体现为经典的官方文本叙事、景观叙事及影像叙事。多样的叙事形式体现了烧卖传说叙事主体为适应民间文学功能转向而进行的实践探索。

君子取财有道:儒家文化对企业避税的影响研究

基于2008~2019年沪深A股上市公司数据,实证检验儒家文化“君子人格”对企业避税的影响。研究发现,地区儒家文化氛围越浓厚,企业避税程度越低。机制检验表明,“君子人格”对义利、奉献、诚信和声誉的重视是4条潜在影响渠道。进一步地,当企业参与更多国际竞争时,前述经济影响不复存在;在法制环境较差的地区,儒家文化的避税抑制作用更加显著,表明儒家文化一定程度上是正式制度的一种有效替代。然而,当企业面临经营困境时,管理者对于经济利益的追求会优先于“君子人格”的价值选择,儒家文化的避税抑制效应不再明显。
