This paper explores the integration of persuasive technology into smoking cessation efforts through the development and evaluation of a mobile app, “No-Smoke.” Leveraging compelling features like social support, tracking, planning, and motivation, the app aims to augment user engagement and support the process of quitting smoking. The efficacy of these features has been substantiated through both automated testing and user feedback, highlighting their potential to enhance awareness, motivation, and behavior modification. Despite notable successes, limitations, including a limited user base and uncertainties regarding long-term efficacy, have been acknowledged, stemming from the inherent complexities of smoking cessation. Nevertheless, based on user experiences and feedback, “No-Smoke” represents a promising advancement in the use of technology for public health interventions, particularly in the realm of smoking cessation. To address existing challenges, future research is recommended to encompass a comprehensive, long-term study involving a larger and more diverse user base. Additionally, further investigation should focus on personalization enhancements and the integration of machine learning algorithms to better understand and respond to user behavior. 展开更多

Persuasive or argumentative writing, which focuses on the reader and seeks to change the reader’s mind,or to bring the reader’s point of view to the writer’s,is the most prominent and practical academic writing and is also the most complex and most challenging. To achieve the persuasive purpose, audience is a key element to consider. But unfortunately, many Chinese college students have no sense of audience at all.Besides, although some researchers have mentioned in their books or papers the important role the audience plays in persuasive writing,so far few writing books or papers have made a relatively comprehensive and systematic study and exploration of how to strengthen Chinese college students’audience awareness. So,this paper, which is intended to elaborate on it,first gives a definition to audience awareness, then analyzes the influence audience awareness exerts on persuasive writing, and finally proposes a few feasible and effective methods to strengthen Chinese college students’audience awareness. 展开更多

The notion that’monologic’written texts construe for themselves a putative addressee(variously termed the’ideal’,’imagined’,’virtual’,’intended’,’model’or’mock’reader)has received a great deal of scholarly attention, initially by scholars of literary fiction and subsequently by discourse analysts more generally. This paper is concerned with putative-reader positioning in persuasive texts and with how, through observing the relationships of alignment and dis-alignment which the author enters into with this putative reader,it is possible to better understand the rhetorical workings of these texts.More specifically,it demonstrates how, through an analysis of which beliefs, expectations and attitudes the author projects onto this putative addressee it is possible to better understand how such a text may be persuasive,to more systematically describe the’compliant readings’associated with a text and to more thoroughly deal with’ideological’workings of persuasive texts as they naturalize particular value systems and world views. In outlining and demonstrating an approach to analyses of putative-addressee positioning, the paper draws on prior work in literary criticism scholarship and in university composition studies. Its primary focus, however,is on developing prior work on the putative addressee in the appraisal-framework literature,in particular work which has attended to the role of the resources of dialogistic positioning(ENGAGEMENT)in’writing the reader into the text’. 展开更多

The new paradigm for technical prose rejects the conventional conveyor belt view and recognizes technical writing as not objective but persuasive and fundamentally rhetorical. For this reason, sci tech translation is also persuasive and therefore far from uncreative or unimaginative. Based on the point of view of underlying unity of the arts and sciences, this paper discusses the relationship between sci tech translation and arts from the common rhetorical devices of literary works and technical prose and interpenetration between literary style and technical style. The issue of this study continues the analysis of persuasive truth (the "truth" of beliefs), a problem debated by us inseveral articles already published, especially in two of them: Doxastic Dialectics (1999) and The Probable and theProblem (2010). In this new "chapter," our intention is to develop more details from the perspective of subjectivity, which has a grounding role in doxastic dialectics. Doxa's axiomatic mechanism tries to temper the subjectivedimension of persuasive truth, by submitting the doxastic proofs to the control of the oppositional principle(=antithetic "reasoning"). Doxastic thinking discovers dialectically its own ratio (=measure), progressivelyincreasing the relevance of the listening capacity. In the text that follows, the concept of listening is used in a largerthan sensitive sense, being equivalent to condition of receptivity. 展开更多

Though "Comparative" rhetoricians Oliver and Kennedy placed Indian rhetoric on the rhetorical map, much remains undiscovered concerning their specific indigenous communicative practices. This essay introduces two such Indian traditions-- Nyāya, a philosophically based approach to persuasion codified by Hindus, and Sadharanikaran, interpreted by many as a Hindu model of communication. Nyāya, gradually developed a five-part "method"(Matilal) that defines arguments in terms of claims, reasons, and analogies. In a parallel dramatic tradition from Bharat Muni called Sadharanikaran, the receiver "not only accepts the message willingly but in the process derives genuine satisfaction and pleasure or Ananda". This essay contrasts the two approaches with Aristotle's more familiar ideas, and then offers some historical and current Indian arguments to illustrate rhetorical delivery shaped by Nyāya and Sadharanikaran, a glimpse into rhetorical performance within a rich non-Western tradition. 展开更多

The purpose of this paper is to explain the role of persuasion and what has been called here pre-persuasion in the perception of the world and of ourselves and in philosophical reflections in general, trying to show that, however original we have wanted to consider, throughout the centuries, the fundamental questions surrounding the ultimate meaning of things, such as“what is being?”,“what is good?”,or“what is the truth or the beauty?”,or yet,“who are we?”,there are always background persuasions that once made explicit by the rhetorical analysis method,it relativizes not only the possible answers, but the question itself. This,in turn, reveals the priority of persuasion on the perception and the unconfessed rhetoric of the speeches. The contribution of the present study is to avoid the naivety of objectivism and metaphysics, the claim of the ultimaverba,or last conversation and to prevent the illusion of definitive speech, seen,by Perelman,as a pseudo lay form of revelation. The only sacredness admitted which,therefore,pre-persuades us is,in Perelman‟s words, that of endless dialogue,in Blanchot‟s words, the infinite conversation, and, finally,in Rorty‟s words, the edifying philosophy. 展开更多

This paper evaluates the influence that information processing routes have on omni-shopping behavior,as well as analyzing the consequences of this behavior for retailers through a cognitive-affective approach.A sample of 705 mobile phone users was used for this purpose. The results obtained using the binomial logit model in a first phase and later with an application of structural equations, reflect that omni-shoppers have a more planned purchasing behavior than those who develop a one-stop shopping behavior. They search for information in a rational and deep way, spending time and effort. As for the consequences that the omni-channel behavior has for retailers,it has been found that those omni-shoppers who experience negative emotions with the retailer, have a low perceived value of the company and their satisfaction will also be negative. 展开更多

Thomas Jefferson created a public philosophy that created in essence his significance as not only a transformative president but as the founder who developed the rationale and enduring tradition for the United States political system.Above all,Jefferson is transformative alone for having created democracy when he introduced his public philosophy,as stated in Charles E.Merriam and Carl Becker’s analysis.Jefferson’s election on March 4,1801,began his two presidencies and created the Jeffersonian Democracy.Jefferson’s definition of a public philosophy is defined by James W.Ceaser.A public philosophy as defined by James W.Ceaser who reviewed the concept that was first used by the journalist Walter Lippman,in his book The Public Philosophy, was concerned about competing philosophies with liberalism against its adversary such as Marxism.Political scientists Theodore Lowi and Samuel Beer defined a public philosophy“as a synonym for what social scientists in American politics called ideology”.Lowi and Beer further defined how a public philosophy was a transforming idea governing public opinion by utilizing Roosevelt’s New Deal to explain an example of a change in public philosophy,in which as federal government is strengthened, replacing the older idea of an inactive government.Further,Lowi described how a public philosophy is a way of understanding the significance of public policies,i.e.,New Deal Policies on society. In addition,James W.Ceaser, described a public philosophy“as a core set of values embodied in long term opinion that influences public policy over a full era.” 展开更多

Jane Austen's posthumously published novel Persuasion has been regarded as a foreshadowing of Romanticism, especially in its autumnal tone that has inherent intimacy with John Keats's To Autumn and Percy Bysshe Shelley's Ode to the West Wind. Blending the stylistic disparities in the two Romanticist poems, Persuasion 's autumnal sensation changes its colors from being tinged with Keats's melancholy to the touch of Shelley's animation. The integration of both tones has created a unique autumnal duet that is remindful of its Romanticist followers. 展开更多
