Nuclear receptors(NRs), especially the ecdysone receptor(EcR) and ultraspiracle(USP), have attracted considerable attention in the regulation of arthropod development and reproduction due to their pivotal roles in ecdysteroid signaling cascades. In the present study, 23 NRs, including one EcR and two USPs, were identified in the genome of the predatory wolf spider Pardosa pseudoannulata. RNA interference(RNAi) targeting EcR and USP-1inhibited spiderling development and resulted in nonviable eggs in the egg sacs. EcR and USP-1responded to changes in ecdysteroid levels, and interference in ecdysteroid biosynthesis led to similar phenotypes as ds EcR and ds USP-1 treatments. These findings suggest that EcR/USP-1-mediated ecdysteroid signaling regulates P. pseudoannulata development and reproduction. The P.pseudoannulata females with suppressed ecdysteroid signaling proactively consumed their non-viable egg sacs, resulting in a 7.19 d shorter first reproductive cycle than the controls. Termination of the failed reproductive cycle enabled the spiders to produce a new egg sac more rapidly. This reproductive strategy may partially rescue the reduction in population growth due to non-viable eggs and compensate for the physiological expenditure of wasted maternal care, which would be beneficial for the conservation of P.pseudoannulata populations and their natural control of insect pests.展开更多

In past decades, the adaptive and ecosystem-engineering roles of such highly specialized life forms have been well studied. However, the adaptive strategies responsible for cushion species reproductive success and maintenance in severe alpine habitats remain largely unclear. In this study, we reviewed the current understanding of reproductive strategies and population persistence in alpine cushion species. We then present a preliminary case study on the sexual reproduction of Arenaria polytrichoides(Caryophyllaceae), a typical cushion species inhabiting high elevations of the Himalaya Hengduan Mountains, which is a hotspot for diversification of cushion species. Finally, we highlight the limitations of our current understanding of alpine cushion species reproduction and propose future directions for study.展开更多

Here we report that the Arabidopsis mutant bcll is male sterile as a result of the failure ofpollen germination. We show that the bcll mutant allele cannot be transmitted by male gametophytes and no homozygous bcll mutants were obtained. Analysis of pollen developmental stages indicates that the bcll mutation affects pollen germination but not pollen maturation. Molecular analysis demonstrates that the failure of pollen germination was caused by the disruption of AtBECLIN 1. AtBECLIN 1 is expressed predominantly in mature pollen and encodes a protein with significant homology to Beclin1/Atg6/Vps30 required for the processes of autophagy and vacuolar protein sorting (VPS) in yeast. We also show that AtBECLIN 1 is required for normal plant development, and that genes related to autophagy, VPS and the glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor system, were affected by the deficiency of AtBECLIN 1.展开更多

However, our understanding of the population dynamics of P . dubia in aquaculture ponds is limited. In this study, groups of larval P . dubia were each fed a diff erent microalgal species, and the eff ects of these diff erent diets on development, survival, and reproduction were assessed. The fi ve microalgae used were species common in aquaculture farms in China, and included two chlorophytes ( Chlorella saccharophila and Platymonas subcordiformis ), one golden microalga ( Isochrysis zhanjiangensis ), and two diatoms ( Chaetoceros muelleri and Cyclotella meneghiniana ). Our results indicated that C . saccharophila was not a suitable food for larval P . dubia , as all larvae fed this microalga died at stage III (as copepodites). The survival rates of P . dubia larvae fed C . muelleri , I . zhanjiangensis , and P . subcordiformis were signifi cantly higher than that of larvae fed C . meneghiniana . In the adult stage, copepods fed C . muelleri , I . zhanjiangensis , and C . meneghiniana produced more nauplii (430-566 nauplii/female), had higher intrinsic growth rates (0.2- 0.253/d), and better longevity (59-60 days) than those fed P . subcordiformis . Our results therefore suggest that P . dubia has diff erent nutritional needs and food preferences at diff erent life stages. For example, P . subcordiformis was suitable for developing larvae but not for breeding adults, while C . meneghiniana was suitable for breeding adults but not for developing larvae. Both C . muelleri and I . zhanjiangensis were excellent foods for P . dubia throughout the entire life cycle.展开更多

It was showed that E. prolifera propagated mainly asexually with specific growth rate (SGR) of 10.47 at 25℃/40 μmol m^-2s^-1. Under this condition, gametes with two flagellate formed and released in 5 days. At the beginning of the development, the unicell gamete divided into two cells with heteropolarity, and then the apical cell developed into thalli primordial cells, whereas the basal cell developed into rhizoid primordial cells. In 8-day culture, the monoplast gamete developed into juvenile germling of 240 μm in length. Unreleased gametes can develop directly within the alga body. E. prolifera could either reproduce through lateral branching or fragmenting except apomixis revealed by Microscopic observation. On aged tissue of E. prolifera, although the degraded pigments partially remained in faded algal filaments, numerous vegetative cells could still divide actively in the algal tissues.展开更多

文摘Cushion species occur in nearly all alpine environments worldwide. Finally, we highlight the limitations of our current understanding of alpine cushion species reproduction and propose future directions for study.

文摘Pollen germination on the surface of compatible stigmatic tissues is an essential step for plant fertilization. We also show that AtBECLIN 1 is required for normal plant development, and that genes related to autophagy, VPS and the glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor system, were affected by the deficiency of AtBECLIN 1.

文摘Background:The broodstock diet, and in particular the lipid and fatty acid composition of the diet,is known to play a key role in reproductive efficiency and survival of the progeny in fish.A major problem when replacing both fish meal and fish oil by plant sources is the lack of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA)and docosahexaenoic acid(DHA).To address this problem,we studied the effect of the plant-based diet supplemented with Schizochytrium sp.microalgae, source of DHA,compared to a conventional commercial diet rich in fish meal and fish oil on reproductive performance and egg quality and the consequences on progeny,in female rainbow trout broodstock. Results:The results demonstrated that DHA-rich microalgae supplementation in a plant-based diet allowed for the maintenance of reproductive performance and egg quality comparable to a conventional commercial feed rich in fish meal and fish oil and led to an increased significant fry survival after resorption. Moreover, when females were fed a plant-based diet supplemented with micro-algae,the 4-month-old progenies showed a significant higher growth when they were challenged with a similar diet as broodstock during 1 month. We provide evidence for metabolic programming in which the maternal dietary induced significant protracted effects on lipid metabolism of progeny. Conclusions:The present study demonstrates that supplementation of a plant-based diet with DHA-rich microalgae can be an effective alternative to fish meal and fish oil in rainbow trout broodstock aquafeed.

文摘Pseudodiaptomus dubia is a calanoid copepod abundant in the mariculture ponds of southern China. Both C . muelleri and I . zhanjiangensis were excellent foods for P . dubia throughout the entire life cycle.
文摘Plant-specific transcriptional regulators called TELOMERE REPEAT BINDING proteins(TRBs)combine two DNA-binding domains, the GH1 domain, which binds to linker DNA and is shared with H1 histones, and the Myb/SANT domain, which specifically recognizes the telobox DNA-binding site motif.TRB1,TRB2,and TRB3 proteins recruit Polycomb group complex 2(PRC2)to deposit H3K27me3 and JMJ14 to remove H3K4me3 at gene promoters containing telobox motifs to repress transcription. Here,we demonstrate that TRB4 and TRB5,two related paralogs belonging to a separate TRB clade conserved in spermatophytes, regulate the transcription of several hundred genes involved in developmental responses to environmental cues.TRB4 binds to several thousand sites in the genome, mainly at transcription start sites and promoter regions of transcriptionally active and H3K4me3-marked genes, but, unlike TRB1,it is not enriched at H3K27me3-marked gene bodies.However,TRB4 can physically interact with the catalytic components of PRC2,SWINGER,and CURLY LEAF(CLF).Unexpectedly,we show that TRB4 and TRB5 are required for distinctive phenotypic traits observed in clf mutant plants and thus function as transcriptional activators of several hundred CLF-controlled genes, including key flowering genes. We further demonstrate that TRB4 shares multiple target genes with TRB1 and physically and genetically interacts with members of both TRB clades.Collectively, these results reveal that TRB proteins engage in both positive and negative interactions with other members of the family to regulate plant development through both PRC2-dependent and-independent mechanisms.

文摘Four distinct types of sulfated peptides have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana. These peptides play crucial roles in regulating plant development and stress adaptation.Recent studies have revealed that Xan-thomonas and Meloidogyne can secrete plant-like sulfated peptides, exploiting the plant sulfated peptide signaling pathway to suppress plant immunity.Over the past three decades, receptors for these four types of sulfated peptides have been identified, all of which belong to the leucine-rich repeat receptor-like protein kinase subfamily.A number of regulatory proteins have been demonstrated to play important roles in their corresponding signal transduction pathways. In this review,we comprehensively summarize the discov-eries of sulfated peptides and their receptors, mainly in Arabidopsis thaliana. We also discuss their known biological functions in plant development and stress adaptation. Finally,we put forward a number of ques-tions for reference in future studies.

文摘Effect of temperature and irradiance on growth and reproduction of Enteromorpha prolifera that bloomed offshore along the Qingdao coast in summer 2008, was studied. On aged tissue of E. prolifera, although the degraded pigments partially remained in faded algal filaments, numerous vegetative cells could still divide actively in the algal tissues.

文摘In most fish, reproduction is seasonal or periodic under the suitable conditions. In turbot(Scophthalmus maximus)farms, one of the most economically important marine flatfish species, changes in daylength could cause changes in the spawning time.In this study,to characterize the regulation of reproductive physiology following light signals, three melatonin receptors(Mtnr)investigated in turbot were named sm Mtnr1,sm Mtnr2,and sm Mtnr1 c.Distinct expression profiles demonstrated that Mtnr m RNAs were concentrated in the brain(as detected in the hypothalamus(Hy)and mesencephalon(Me)),gonad and eye.The most abundant Mtnr1 and Mtnr2 m RNA expression levels were detected in the central nervous system at the beginning of the breeding season, suggesting that Mtnr1 and Mtnr2 may play vital roles in the regulation of turbot gonadal development. In addition, the melatonin profiles gradually increased and reached to the highest level at the spawning stage, indicating that melatonin is a potent hormone in the regulation of fish oocyte growth and maturation. The results of this study suggested that melatonin is the primary factor that transduces the light signal and regulates the physiological functions of turbot seasonal reproduction. Moreover, the results of this study may establish a foundation for further research seeking to identify fish melatonin receptors involved in the gonadal development and gamete maturation.
