The H-mode has been obtained with a power threshold of 50 kW under a boronized wall condition. Both energy and particle confinements have been improved along with a dropped edge plasma density and an increase electron temperature during the LHH phase. A negative Er well plays a key role of triggering and sustaining the good confinement. Both electrostatic fluctuation of the plasma potential and the density fluctuations dropped to an ultra-low level. The observation of an enhanced Er shear before the reduction in turbulence level is consistent with an increased Er shear as the cause of turbulence suppression.展开更多

The results show that the wave absorption of the second harmonic extraordinary wave is better than that of the fundamental ordinary wave. In order to understand the interaction mechanism between electrons and the two different polarization modes, the energy exchange between electrons and the two modes are theoretically analyzed, and it is found that the coupling intensity described by the Bessel function and different polarizations of the two modes are the main reasons leading to the above phenomenon. The theoretical results of this study fit well with the simulated and numerical results.展开更多

EBW that is thermally emitted in the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) layer may couple with the electromagnetic wave and be emitted to the vacuum via the EBW-extraordinary-ordinary (B-X-O) mode conversion process. We consider the use of one of the transmission lines for electron cyclotron heating (ECH) in LHD as a receiving system of the emission. It is derived that the waves in the fundamental cyclotron frequency range are emitted as the EBW near their upper hybrid resonance (UHR) layer outside the last close flux surface (LCFS). On the other hand, waves in the second harmonics cyclotron frequency range are emitted in the core region. It means that successful measurement of waves of the second harmonic frequency range emitted from extremely high dense core plasma with setting an aim angle for receiving indicates a possibility of the second harmonic ECH by EBW in the core region with setting the same aim angle and the same polarization for launching.展开更多

By using an antenna installed in the lower port, direct oblique launching of the extraordinary (X-) mode from the high magnetic field side (HFS) is available. Since the parallel component of the refractive index (NIF) varies during propagation because of the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field, NH can be zero when the launched X-mode crosses the fundamental electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) layer even NⅡ is noonzero initially. In such a condition, if the electron density is above a certain level the obliquely launched X-mode can pass the fundamental ECR layer without being damped out and can be mode-converted to EBW that is absorbed at the Doppler shifted ECR layer. By using an antenna installed in the horizontal port, oblique launching from the lower magnetic field side (LFS) toward the over-dense plasma is available. Excitation of EBW via the mode conversion process of ordinary mode(O)-extraordinary mode(X)-electron Bernstein wave (B) is expected with the O-mode launching toward an appropriate direction. The O-X-B mode conversion rate and the region of power deposition were surveyed by varying the magnetic field strength and the launching direction. The results of the survey suggest that efficient heating in the core region is difficult by using the existing antenna. Rearrangement of the final mirror of the launching antenna may be needed.展开更多

One is the magnetohydrodynamic instability due to the negative curvature of the magnetic field lines around the center region of a mirror bottle. Another is the loss of charged particles escaping from the loss cone of a magnetic mirror. We have continued to inquire into a means to solve the latter problem. We here propose a new way which will be able to make a magnitude of a loss angle of a magnetic mirror for deuterons virtually zero.展开更多

Transport equation for frequency fluctuations of scattered radiation has been derived. Broadening of the spatial power spectrum and amplification of the intensity of frequency fluctuation taking into account geometry of the task and the features of turbulent magnetized plasma is analyzed for the anisotropic Gaussian correlation function using the remote sensing data. It is shown that spatial-temporal fluctuations of electron density and external magnetic field, anisotropy and angle of inclination of prolate irregularities relative to the external magnetic field may lead to the exponential amplification of the intensity of frequency fluctuations of scattered electromagnetic waves in the collisional magnetized plasma.展开更多

We previously reported the way of installing a supplemental magnetic mirror (which has a cyclotron heating space within) at the exit of a main magnetic bottle. The cyclotron heating space was set to increase a reflection-efficiency of the supplemental mirror. We could not suppress the loss of the escaping deuteron ions sufficiently even with a very long mirror and a very powerful electric field. Then, in this work we propose a new plan of installing another supplemental mirror besides the previous supplemental mirror. A new mirror is set perpendicularly to the center axis of the main bottle. By the addition of the perpendicular mirror, an efficiency of sending back of escaping deuteron ions is considerably theoretically improved. Also in the previous work, since we did not touch how to supply a high-frequency electric field to the cyclotron heating space, here we consider supplying it by an extraordinary-wave with a cyclotron frequency. It is mentioned that propagation of an extraordinary-wave with an electron cyclotron frequency depends on a magnetic field strength and density of escaping electrons.展开更多

This instability has been studied by several authors for cold plasma found to be stable for high frequencies (greater than plasma frequency ωp). In this paper, we prove that this instability is unstable for warm plasma for higher frequencies (greater than plasma frequency ωp) and much suitable to study the solar coronal heating problem. We have derived a general dispersion relation for warm plasma and discussed the various methods analyzing the instability conditions. Also, we derived an expression for the growth rate of TSI and analyzed the growth rate for photospheric and coronal plasmas. A very promising result is that the ion temperature is the source of this instability and shifts the growth rate to high frequency region, while the electron temperature does the reverse. TSI shows a high growth rate for a wide frequency range for photosphere plasma, suggesting that the electron precipitation by magnetic reconnection current, acceleration by flares, may be source of TSI in the photosphere. But for corona, these waves are damped to accelerate the ions and further growing of such instability is prohibited due to the high conductivity in coronal plasma. The TSI is a common instability;the theory can be easily modifiable for multi-ion plasmas and will be a useful tool to analyze all the astrophysical problems and industrial devices, too.展开更多
