The self-excited second harmonic in radio-frequency capacitively coupled plasma was significantly enhanced by adjusting the external variable capacitor. At a lower pressure of 3 Pa,the excitation of the second harmonic caused an abnormal transition of the electron energy probability function, resulting in abrupt changes in the electron density and temperature.Such changes in the electron energy probability function as well as the electron density and temperature were not observed at the higher pressure of 16 Pa under similar harmonic changes. The phenomena are related to the influence of the second harmonic on stochastic heating, which is determined by both amplitude and the relative phase of the harmonics. The results suggest that the self-excited high-order harmonics must be considered in practical applications of lowpressure radio-frequency capacitively coupled plasmas. 展开更多

GHz burst-mode femtosecond(fs)laser, which emits a series of pulse trains with extremely short intervals of several hundred picoseconds, provides distinct characteristics in materials processing as compared with the conventional irradiation scheme of fs laser(single-pulse mode). In this paper,we take advantage of the moderate pulse interval of 205 ps(4.88 GHz)in the burst pulse for high-quality and high-efficiency micromachining of single crystalline sapphire by laser induced plasma assisted ablation(LIPAA).Specifically, the preceding pulses in the burst generate plasma by ablation of copper placed behind the sapphire substrate, which interacts with the subsequent pulses to induce ablation at the rear surface of sapphire substrates. As a result, not only the ablation quality but also the ablation efficiency and the fabrication resolution are greatly improved compared to the other schemes including single-pulse mode fs laser direct ablation,single-pulse mode fs-LIPAA,and nanosecond-LIPAA. 展开更多

This study deals with the investigation of Nd:YAG laser-assisted ablation and plasma formation of Ti at irradiance of 0.85 GW cm-2 under Ar and Ne environment at various pressures ranging from 10-120 Torr.Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is used to evaluate plasma parameters, whereas quartz crystal microbalance is used for ablation yield measurements. The crater depth is evaluated by optical microscopy. The surface features are explored by scanning electron microscope(SEM) analysis and the micro-hardness is measured by a Vickers hardness tester. It is observed that the plasma parameters are higher in Ar than in Ne,and are strongly correlated with the ablation yield, ablation depth, surface features and hardness of laser-ablated Ti.These parameters increase with increasing the pressure of environmental gases, attain their maxima at 40 Torr for Ar and at 60 Torr for Ne.Afterwards, they show a decreasing trend up till a maximum pressure of 120 Torr. The maximum value of the electron temperature(Te) is5480 K,number density(ne) is 1.46 × 1018 cm-3,ablation depth is 184 μm,ablation yield is3.9 × 1015 atoms/pulse and hardness is 300 HV in the case of Ar atmosphere.SEM analysis reveals the growth of surface features, such as cones, ridges and pores, whose appearance is more distinct in Ar than Ne and is attributed to temperature, pressure and density gradients along with recoil pressure of the Ti plasma. 展开更多

Objective: To evaluate the hemodynamic changes of hepatic artery (HA), portal vein (PV) and tumors in hepatic cancer patients treated by cluster electrode radio-frequency ablation with the aid of color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI). Methods: The hemodynamic changes of HA, PV and 42 tumors in 30 cases of hepatic cancer were investi- gated by CDFI one week before and after cluster e- lectrode radio-frequency ablation. Results: One week after radio-frequency ablation, the velocity of HA decreased (P<0.05), but the dia- meter and velocity of PV unchanged. Before radio- frequency ablation, blood signals were observed in 35 cancer nodes (83.0 % of all 42 nodes). After radio- frequency ablation, blood signals were reduced in 15 nodes and disappeared in 14 nodes. Early investiga- tion implied that the decrease of blood supply was parallel with the reduction of node size. However, the outcome in case of huge nodes with double blood supply was not as promising as those small nodes. Conclusion: CDFI is useful to assess blood supply in ablation of hepatic cancer by using cluster electrode radio-frequency therapy. 展开更多

The transport of hot electrons in inertial confinement fusion(ICF)is integrated issue due to the coupling of hydrodynamic evolution and many physical processes.A hot electron transport code is developed and coupled with the radiation hydrodynamic code MULTI1D in this study.Using the code, the slowing-down process and ablation process of the hot electron beam are simulated. The ablation pressure scaling law of hot electron beam is confirmed in our simulations. The hot electron transport is simulated in the radiation-ablated plasmas relevant to indirect-drive ICF,where the spatial profile of hot electron energy deposition is presented around the shock compressed region. It is shown that the hot electron can prominently increase the total ablation pressure in the early phase of radiation-ablated plasma. So,our study suggests that a potential-driven symmetric mechanism may occur under the irradiation of asymmetric hot electron beam. The possible degradation from the hot electron transport and preheating is also discussed. 展开更多

A 2D-3V implicit immersed-finite-element particle-in-cell(IFE-PIC)model is introduced to investigate the radio-frequency(RF)self-bias accelerating system applied in the RF ion thruster.A set of holes in a two-grid system with slit apertures is simulated in Cartesian coordinates. The characteristics of the plasma plume, such as the ion density, the neutralization rate and the ion and electron current density were investigated for different RF voltage amplitudes(600-1200V)and frequencies(6-30 MHz).Furthermore, the performance of the thruster was also carefully studied. The simulation results show that a well-focused plasma beam can be formed when the voltage amplitude is larger than 900 V and the frequency exceeds the reciprocal of ion transit time(≥12 MHz)in our simulation cases. The performance of the system can be evidently improved by increasing the voltage amplitude and the frequency, and the losses of the particle and thrust are reduced correspondingly. The bulk region of the plasma beam downstream shows good quasi-neutrality,and the ions are dominant in the peripheral region when a well-focused state is achieved. The high ion density beamlet in the periphery of the ion beam is closer to the axis when the voltage amplitude is increasing, while it is expanded radially when increasing the frequency.Backstream electrons have been observed upstream, and this mainly occurs in the phase in which the electron cannot escape. 展开更多

Cold atmospheric plasmas(CAPs)have shown great applicability in agriculture. Many kinds of CAP sources have been studied in agricultural applications to promote plant growth and cure plant diseases. We briefly review the state-of-the-art stimulating effects of atmospheric-pressure dielectricbarrier-discharge(AP-DBD)plasmas,after the direct or indirect treatment of plants for growth promotion and disease control. We then discuss the special demands on the characteristics of the CAP sources for their applications in plant mutation breeding. An atmospheric and room temperature plasma(ARTP)jet generator with a large plasma irradiation area,a high enough concentration of chemically reactive species and a low gas temperature is designed for direct plant mutagenesis.Experimental measurements of the electrical, thermal and optical features of the ARTP generator are conducted. Then,an ARTP-P(ARTP for plant mutagenesis)mutation breeding machine is developed, and a typical case of plant mutation breeding by the ARTP-P mutation machine is presented using Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt.seeds.Physical and agricultural experiments show that the newly-developed ARTP-P mutation breeding machine with a large irradiation area can generate uniform CAP jets with high concentrations of chemically reactive species and mild gas temperatures, and have signiflcant mutagenesis effects on the Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt.seeds.The ARTP-P mutation breeding machine may provide a platform for systematic studies on mutation mechanisms and results for various plant seeds under different operating conditions in future research. 展开更多

Ablation excited by current pulses is a very critical physical process in pulse plasma thrusters(PPT).Its effects on wall-plasma interaction directly determine the PPT performances. In order to reveal the process of the ablated wall interaction with the discharge plasma in PPT,ablation models formulated by three different boundary conditions at the wall-plasma interface are studied. These are the two widely used high-speed evaporation models(Model-L and Model-M),and the recently developed Keida-Zaghloul model(Model-K)of the Knudsen layer that takes into account the internal degrees of freedom on the energy flux conservation.First, fundamental mechanisms of the three ablation models are clarified by comparative analysis in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the wall-plasma interaction. Then, the applicability of different ablation models with the numerical solutions of LES-6 PPT is investigated in detail using magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)modeling. Results show that Model-L and Model-M are actually special cases of Model-K when a simplified jump conditions limited by high velocity at the vapor/plasma interface is used;A ratio of ablation rate in Model-L to that in Model-M is about 0.8at the same wall surface temperature, while it rises to 1 at different surface temperature determined by Model-L and Model-M in PPT.Even though Model-K solution requires significant computational time,it shows more accurate ablation feature for the wall-plasma interaction and possesses better computing precision of impulse bit during post-pulse which is useful for future studies of the late time ablation. 展开更多

The laser ablation-molecular beam(LA-MB) method is useful for studying the reactions of metal ions with molecular clusters. Reactions of magnesium plasma with methanol clusters were studied by using this method. A specially designed reaction cell was used as a fast flow reactor operated under thermal conditions, and the reaction products were measured with a time-of-flight(TOF) mass spectrometer. Surprisingly, several series of cluster ions with complex sizes and intensity distributions were obtained when the laser ablating was applied to different parts of the molecular beam. In the front part of the molecular beam, strong Mg^+ (CH3OH)n( n = 0-5) and weak H^+ (CH3OH)n( n = 0-5 ) cluster ions were observed with relatively small cluster sizes ; in the middle part of the molecular beam, the main cluster ions were H^+ ( CH3OH)n ( n = 6-17 ) and H^+( H2O) 2 ( CH3OH)n( n = 6-17 ) with a relatively large cluster size and a weak intensity; in the back part of the molecular beam, two new series of cluster ions, MgO^+ ( H2O) ( CH3 OH)n( n = 6-10 ) and MgOCH3^+ ( CH3OH)n( n = 6-10), were obtained and accompanied by weak H^+(CH3OH)n(n = 4-7) and H^+( H2O)2 (CH3OH)n( n = 3-6). The formation mechanisms and speed characteristics of the cluster ions are discussed in this article. 展开更多

MoS_(2)targets were irradiated by infra-red(IR)pulsed laser in a high vacuum to determine hot plasma parameters, atomic, molecular and ion emission, and angular and charge state distributions. In this way, pulsed laser deposition(PLD)of thin films on graphene oxide substrates was also realized. An Nd:YAG laser, operating at the 1064 nm wavelength with a 5 ns pulse duration and up to a 1 J pulse energy,in a single pulse or at a 10 Hz repetition rate, was employed.Ablation yield was measured as a function of the laser fluence.Plasma was characterized using different analysis techniques, such as time-of-flight measurements, quadrupole mass spectrometry and fast CCD visible imaging. The so-produced films were characterized by composition, thickness, roughness, wetting ability, and morphology. When compared to the MoS_(2)targets,they show a slight decrease of S with respect to Mo,due to higher ablation yield, low fusion temperature and high sublimation in vacuum. The pulsed IR laser deposited Mo Sx(with 1<x<2)films are uniform, with a thickness of about 130 nm,a roughness of about 50 nm and a higher wettability than the MoS_(2)targets.Some potential applications of the pulsed IR laser-deposited Mo Sx films are also presented and discussed. 展开更多

The expansion process of ablation plasma jet in liquid was experimentally investigated by using high speed digital camera. The sequential pictures show that, in the initial stage of the jet, the Taylor cavity expands in the axial and radial directions simultaneously, and then, is subjected to the constraint of chamber wall, in axial direction mainly. The maximum axial speed of the cavity's head ranges from 240m/s to 280m/s. Some strong heat conduction and mass transmission effects can be found in the surface of Taylor cavity, where the plasma cools down and condenses as solid particles while the liquid vaporizes as gas. Compared the expansion processes of the cavities among the different discharge energies and the nozzle diameters, it can be seen that the expansion speed of the cavity is directly proportional to the discharge energy and inversely to the nozzle diameter, and the effect of the discharge energy is stronger than that of the nozzle diameter. A set of equations describing the expansion process of ablation plasma jet was derived under the assumption of momentum conservation. The calculated results by use of the equations coincide with the experimented results better. 展开更多

Removal of X-ray-induced carbon contamination on beamline optics was studied using radio-frequency plasma with an argon/hydrogen(Ar/H_2) mixture. Experiments demonstrated that the carbon removal rate with Ar/H_2 plasma was higher than that with pure hydrogen or argon. The possible mechanism for this enhanced removal was discussed. The key working parameters for Ar/H_2 plasma removal were determined, including the optimal vacuum pressure, gas mixing ratio, and source power. In this paper, aerodynamic actuation characteristics of radio-frequency(RF) discharge plasma are studied and a method is proposed for shock wave control based on RF discharge. Under the static condition, a RF diffuse glow discharge can be observed; under the supersonic inflow, the plasma is blown downstream but remains continuous and stable.Time-resolved schlieren is used for flow field visualization. It is found that RF discharge not only leads to continuous energy deposition on the electrode surface but also induces a compression wave. Under the supersonic inflow condition, a weak oblique shock wave is induced by discharge. Experimental results of the shock wave control indicate that the applied actuation can disperse the bottom structure of the ramp-induced oblique shock wave, which is also observed in the extracted shock wave structure after image processing. More importantly, this control effect can be maintained steadily due to the continuous high-frequency(MHz) discharge. Finally, correlations for schlieren images and numerical simulations are employed to further explore the flow control mechanism. It is observed that the vortex in the boundary layer increases after the application of actuation, meaning that the boundary layer in the downstream of the actuation position is thickened. This is equivalent to covering a layer of low-density smooth wall around the compression corner and on the ramp surface, thereby weakening the compressibility at the compression corner. Our results demonstrate the ability of RF plasma aerodynamic actuation to control the supersonic airflow. 展开更多

Active control of the local environment of the cold atmospheric plasma(CAP) jet is of great importance in actual applications since the CAP operates in an open atmosphere with the inevitable entrainment of the surrounding cold air. In this paper, the solid shielding effects of the cylindrical quartz tubes with different inner diameters on the characteristics of the CAP jets driven by a radio-frequency(RF) power supply are studied experimentally. The experimental results show that the total length of the shielded plasma jet can be increased significantly by an appropriate combination of the quartz tube inner diameter and that of the plasma generator nozzle exit with other parameters being unchanged. This phenomenon may be qualitatively attributed to the loss of diffusion of the charged particles in the radial direction under different inner diameters of the quartz tubes. Compared with the plasma free jet, the plasma shielding jet is produced with optimized parameters including longer plasma jet length, higher concentrations of chemically reactive species, higher rotational, vibrational, and electron excitation temperatures when the inner diameters of the solid shielding tube and the generator nozzle exit are the same. A maximum plasma jet length of 52.0 cm is obtained in contrast to that of 5.0 cm of the plasma free jet in this study. The experimental results indicate that the solid shielding effect provides a new method for the active control of the local environment of the RF-CAP jet operating in an open atmosphere. 展开更多

The inflexion point of electron density and effective electron temperature curves versus radio-frequency (RF) bias voltage is observed in the H mode of inductively coupled plasmas (ICPs). The electron energy probability function (EEPF) evolves first from a Maxwellian to a Druyvesteyn-like distribution, and then to a Maxwellian distribution again as the RF bias voltage increases. This can be explained by the interaction of two distinct bias-induced mechanisms, that is: bias- induced electron heating and bias-induced ion acceleration loss and the decrease of the effective discharge volume due to the sheath expansion. Furthermore, the trend of electron density is verified by a fluid model combined with a sheath module. 展开更多

The tuned substrate self-bias in an rf inductively coupled plasma source is controlled by means of varying the impedance of an external LC network inserted between the substrate and the ground. The influencing parameters such as the substrate axial position, different coupling coils and inserted resistance are experimentally studied. To get a better understanding of the experimental results, the axial distributions of the plasma density, electron temperature and plasma potential are measured with an rf compensated Langmuir probe; the coil rf peak-to-peak voltage is measured with a high voltage probe. As in the case of changing discharge power, it is found that continuity, instability and bi-stability of the tuned substrate bias can be obtained by means of changing the substrate axial position in the plasma source or the inserted resistance. Additionally, continuity can not transit directly into bi-stability, but evolves via instability. The inductance of the coupling coil has a substantial effect on the magnitude and the property of the tuned substrate bias. 展开更多

In this study,a laser-assisted pulsed plasma thruster(LA-PPT)with a novel configuration is proposed as an electric propulsion thruster which separates laser ablation and electromagnetic acceleration.Owing to the unique structure of the thruster, metals can also be used as propellants, and a higher specific impulse is expected. The ablation quality, morphology, and plume distribution of various metals(aluminium alloy, red copper, and carbon steel)with different laser energies were studied experimentally. The ablation morphology and plume distribution of red copper were more uniform,as compared to those of other metals, and the ablation quality was higher, indicating its greater suitability for LA-PPT.The plume generated by nanosecond laser ablation of aluminium alloy expanded faster, which indicated that the response time of the thruster with aluminium alloy as the propellant was shorter. In addition, when the background pressure was 0.005 Pa,an obvious plume splitting phenomenon was observed in the ablation plume of the pulsed laser irradiating aluminium alloy, which may significantly reduce the utilisation rate of the propellant. 展开更多
