Adopting "simultaneous transmitting, simultaneous receiving" operational scheme, instantaneous polarization radar (IPR) can measure target polarization scattering matrix (PSM) using only once target echoes in two orthogonal polarization channels. Firstly, signal model and signal process are advanced under narrowband condition. Secondly, measurement performances of two typical IPR waveforms are analyzed in detail. At last, field experiments are carried out using X-band IPR system designed by National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), China. Compared with results obtained by alternative polarization measurement scheme, following results can be obtained: the difference of relative amplitude measurement results is smaller than 2 dB and that of relative phase measurement results is smaller than 10?, verifying the validity of instantaneous polarization measurement scheme. 展开更多

Atomic thickness thin films are critical functional materials and structures in atomic and close-to-atomic scale manufacturing.However,fast,facile,and highly sensitive precision measurement of atomic film thickness remains challenging.The reflected light has a dramatic phase change and extreme reflectivity considering the Brewster angle,indicating the high sensitivity of the optical signal to film thickness near this angle.Hence,the precision polarization measurement method focusing on Brewster angle is vital for the ultrahigh precision characterization of thin films.A precision polarization measurement method based on a liquid crystal variable retarder(LCVR)is proposed in this paper,and a measurement system with a high angular resolution is established.A comprehensive measurement system calibration scheme is also introduced to accommodate ultrahigh precision film thickness measurement.Repeatable measurement accuracy to the subnanometer level is achieved.Standard silicon oxide film samples of different thicknesses were measured around Brewster angle using the self-developed system and compared with a commercial ellipsometer to verify the measurement accuracy.The consistency of the thickness measurement results demonstrates the feasibility and robustness of the measurement method and calibration scheme.This study also demonstrates the remarkable potential of the LCVR-based polarization method for atomic film thickness measurement in ultraprecision manufacturing. 展开更多

Based on the ambiguity function, a novel signal processing method for the polarization measurement radar is developed. One advantage of this method is that the two orthogonal polarized signals do not have to be perpendicular to each other, which is required by traditional methods. The error due to the correlation of the two transmitting signals in the traditional method, can be reduced by this new approach. A concept called ambiguity function matrix (AFM) is introduced based on this method. AFM is a promising tool for the signal selection and design in the polarization scattering matrix measurement. The waveforms of the polarimetric radar are categorized and analyzed based on AFM in this paper. The signal processing flow of this method is explained. And the polarization scattering matrix measurement performance is testified by simulation. Furthermore, this signal processing method can be used in the inter-pulse interval measurement technique as well as in the instantaneous measurement technique. 展开更多

Its applica- tion in the real radar system is also discussed. The analysis indicates that instantaneous polarization radar ([PR) has inherent cross-polarization measurement error. The proposed method can effectively eliminate this error, and thus enhance the polarization scattering matrix (PSM) measurement precision. The phase error caused by digital receiver's direct IF sampling and mixing of two orthogonal polarization channels can be removed. Consequently, the inherent error of target polarization scattering measurement of the instantaneous polarization radar system is well revised. It has good reference value for further ploarimetric calibration and high practical application prospect. 展开更多

External-cavity birefringence feedback effects of the microchip Nd:YAG laser are presented. When a birefringence element is placed in the external feedback cavity of the laser, two orthogonally polarized laser beams with a phase difference are output. The phase difference is twice as large as the phase retardation in the external cavity along the two orthogonal directions. The variable extra-cavity birefringence, caused by rotation of the external-cavity birefringenee element, results in tunable phase difference between the two orthogonally polarized beams. This means that the roll angle information has been translated to phase difference of two output laser beams. A theoretical analysis based on the Fabry-Perot cavity equivalent model and refractive index ellipsoid is presented, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. This phenomenon has potential applications for roll angle measurement. 展开更多

The one-step quantum secure direct communication(QSDC)(Sci.Bull.67,367(2022))can effectively simplify QSDC’s operation and reduce message loss.For enhancing its security under practical experimental condition,we propose two measurement-device-independent(MDI)one-step QSDC protocols,which can resist all possible attacks from imperfect measurement devices.In both protocols,the communication parties prepare identical polarization-spatial-mode two-photon hyperentangled states and construct the hyperentanglement channel by hyperentanglement swapping.The first MDI one-step QSDC protocol adopts the nonlinear-optical complete hyperentanglement Bell state measurement(HBSM)to construct the hyperentanglement channel,while the second protocol adopts the linear-optical partial HBSM.Then,the parties encode the photons in the polarization degree of freedom and send them to the third party for the hyperentanglementassisted complete polarization Bell state measurement.Both protocols are unconditionally secure in theory.The simulation results show the MDI one-step QSDC protocol with complete HBSM attains the maximal communication distance of about354 km.Our MDI one-step QSDC protocols may have potential applications in the future quantum secure communication field. 展开更多

An algorithm to retrieve aerosol optical properties using multi-angular,multi-spectral,and polarized data without a priori knowledge of the land surface was developed.In the algorithm,the surface polarized reflectance was estimated by eliminating the atmospheric scattering from measured polarized reflectance at 1640 nm.A lookup table (LUT) and an iterative method were adopted in the algorithm to retrieve the aerosol optical thickness (AOT,at 665 nm) and the (A)ngstr(o)m exponent (computed between the AOTs at 665 and 865 nm).Experiments were performed in Tianjin to verify the algorithm.Data were provided by a newly developed airborne instrument,the Advanced Atmosphere Multi-angle Polarization Radiometer (AMPR).The AMPR measurements over the target field agreed well with the nearby ground-based sun photometer.An algorithm based on Research Scanning Polarimeter (RSP) measurements was introduced to validate the observational measurements along a flight path over Tianjin.The retrievals were consistent between the two algorithms.The AMPR algorithm shows potential in retrieving aerosol optical properties over a vegetation surface. 展开更多

Potentiodynamic polarization measurement was adopted to investigate the corrosion resistance of samples and the tests were carried out respectively in 1mol/L H2SO4 and NaOH aquatic solution. The corrosion performance of the amorphous films was compared with that of multilayered and pure Nb films. Experimental results indicated that the corrosion resistance of amorphous films was better than that of the corresponding multilayers and pure Nb films for both Ni-Nb system with negative heat of formation and Cu-Nb system with positive heat of formation. 展开更多

By using the rotating analyzer ellipsometry method, the linear polarization degree of light emerging from this beamline has been measured and the circular polarization evaluated for 700-860 eV. The first soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements are carried out at BSRF by positioning the beamline aperture out of the plane of the electron storage ring. 展开更多

The measurement of an extremely small magneto-optical polarization rotation angle with high sensitivity is integral to many scientific and technological applications. In this Letter, we have presented a technique based on Faraday modulation combined with the optical differential method to measure an extremely small polari- zation rotation angle with high sensitivity. The theoretical and experimental results show that common mode noise is reduced appreciably and signal to noise ratio is enhanced. The effectiveness of this technique has been demonstrated by measuring the Verdet constant of terbium gallium garnet glass and measuring the small polari- zation rotation angle. A sensitivity of enhancement of one order of magnitude has been achieved using differ- ential detection based on Faraday modulation. 展开更多

In this paper,we examine the tiny polarization rotation effect in total internal reflection due to the spin–orbit interaction of light.We find that the tiny polarization rotation rate will induce a geometric phase gradient,which can be regarded as the physical origin of photonic spin Hall effect.We demonstrate that the spin-dependent splitting in position space is related to the polarization rotation in momentum space,while the spin-dependent splitting in momentum space is attributed to the polarization rotation in position space.Furthermore,we introduce a quantum weak measurement to determine the tiny polarization rotation rate.The rotation rate in momentum space is obtained with 118 nm,which manifests itself as a spatial shift,and the rotation rate in position space is achieved with 38 μrad∕λ,which manifests itself as an angular shift.The investigation of the polarization rotation characteristics will provide insights into the photonic spin Hall effect and will enable us to better understand the spin–orbit interaction of light. 展开更多

In this Letter, a refractive index measurement of a dielectric sample using highly focused radially polarized light is reported. Through imaging analysis of the optical field at the pupil plane of a high numerical aperture (NA) objective lens reflected by the sample under study, the Brewster angle is found. Employing a high NA objective lens allows the measurement of multiple angles of incidence from 0° to 64° in a single shot. The refractive index of the sample is estimated using the measured Brewster angle. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical images computed with the Fresnel theory, and a good agreement is obtained. 展开更多

The results showed that temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration and pH had great influence on corrosion current density (icorr) of X70 steel. Corrosion current density of X70 steel was most influenced by dissolved oxygen concentration in simulated solution. The corrosion degree of X70 steel was the least under the environment of low temperature, deficient oxygen and weak acid. 展开更多

A small fluctuation of the photon beam position will affect the intensity and polarization characteristics of synchrotron radiation (SR) when it enters an endstation through the related beamline. In this paper, by changing the electron orbit equilibrium position in the vertical direction, we have measured the corresponding changes in the absorption strength of the SR with a gold mesh in different chopper aperture positions. It is found that for three aperture positions, the absorption intensity of the gold mesh shows a good Gaussian distribution as the photon beam position moves, while the ratio of the SR intensity passing through the upper and lower apertures shows a monotonous variation. This suggests a new method for estimating the circular polarization degree of SR originating from the bending magnet based on our current measurement. 展开更多
