However, after detailed and systematic research, I also find some shortcomings in this important academic work: Firstly, written in the metaphysical language, Fiction and Repetition can never succeed in escaping the logocentrism and binary opposition inherent in this language.Secondly, based on Saussure's argument on langue, the monograph's view of indeterminacy of literary work's meaning is theoretically correct but practically inadequate. Last but not the least, Miller's proposal on repetition also has some limitations. By taking into account both the work's merits and demerits, we can gain a more comprehensive outlook on Miller's idea of repetition as well as the deconstruction theory of literary criticism in general.展开更多

However, the well-known distinction into direct and indirect characterizations discursively formulated in Western literary theory may not be capable of accommodating various forms of characterization in other literatures and cultures. This article sets out to summarize and discuss the distinctive approaches to characterization in classical Chinese fiction in the triple purpose of complementing the binary distinction in the West, introducing the indigenous Chinese literary theory to Western readers, and facilitating their reading and understanding of Chinese fiction.展开更多

All genres used to be called ″romance″ to distinguish them from ″true″ novels. There were arguments about it in Hawthorne’s The House of Seven Gables and in a heated exchange between H.G. Wells and Henry James. I will talk about this difference. All genre fiction pays attention to the external world, but science fiction is the only one of them that looks forward by being grounded in the present. Is science fiction really a genre? There are some doubts. Science fiction is not about science per se, but about the philosophy of science:the study of the external world and its relation to man. It is ideal for ″thought experiments.″ By exploring possible futures, we cannot only examine our present world, but can see ways in which it can be improved. Hence, science fiction is the search for, if not utopia, then at least a better world. This paper will also discuss the ideas of Kim Stanley Robinson, Ursula K. Le Guin, and others in their search for a better future.展开更多

Several ways of reading particular works of science fiction are examined, like providing historical contexts for readers, close reading and structural analysis, and application of theories based on particular ideologies or from other disciplines in the social and political sciences (such as feminist theory, Marxist theory, psychological theory, etc.). A conclusion is drawn that for literary analysis, a hybrid methodology, one devised individually for each text, works best.展开更多

Most English teachers think literary theory is such a complex field with jargon-ridden disciplines and concepts that it is often considered as "a hot potato" in classroom teaching. Based on a case study from "Approaching Fiction" in China Youth University of Political Studies (CYUPS), the present paper claims that application of literary theory in teaching literature not only greatly broadens students' horizon but also deepens their interpretation and understanding of literary works. This paper focuses on the analysis of his writing style as a news reporter and as a literary writer in order to investigate whether there exists some links between the two or whether his training as a reporter has any effect on his writing as fiction writer. By employing a corpus-based stylistic approach, the paper analyzes in great details Hemingway's early news writing in Kansas City Star ( 1917-1918) and his later fiction writing in the novella The Old Man and the Sea (1952). The stylistic features at lexical level are explored quantitatively in both writings via statistical data. The paper concludes that Hemingway's writing style has his own heritage. The style in his early news articles does find its way into his later fiction writing. There do exist certain similarities in the choices of lexical items and phrasal expressions. It also indicates that a further exploration on their syntactic, rhetorical, and discourse levels is needed ira fuller picture of Hemingway's writing style is to be unveiled.展开更多

But perhaps there is no truth without fiction; Plato's own myths would testify to this necessary combination of "history" and "story" (histoire, storia, Geschichte, etc.). Still, it might be not enough simply to affirm the necessity of fictional narrative for an historical account. In some cases, it would be difficult to accept a fictional aspect of historical testimony. Jorge Semprdn claims, on the other hand, that only fiction is able to communicate a traumatic, "unbearable" experience such as the one of prison camps. He refers to the work of Fyodor Dostoevsky as his model. My paper analyzes this testimonial aspect of Dostoevsky's Notes, especially the Notes from a Dead House. It shows, the particularity of this work, which combines an intense personal experience with a fictional elaboration, a quasi-novelistic setting, plot, and characters. I claim that in a sense such a combination might be considered as a model for literature in general, for its testimonial value, for its truth.展开更多
