Study on the Influencing Factors of L2 Reading Ability and Its Regulation Strategies

This paper takes college students as research subjects to investigate the factors affecting L2 Reading ability and their regulation strategies through scale surveys.The findings are as follows:(1)Linguistic factors have significant impacts on L2 Reading ability,and the influence of non-linguistic factors,such as non-intellectual factors and cultural background knowledge,is also important;and(2)flexible use of reading regulation strategies according to the learning conditions(such as the information extraction strategy,the metacognitive reading regulation strategy,and the interactive reading strategy)can effectively improve learners’L2 Reading ability.The findings of this study have important theoretical and practical value for improving L2 learners’Reading ability.

Graphic Organizers and Reading Comprehension Ability： Evidence From Iranian EFL University Students

The present study investigated the impact from GOs （Graphic Organizers） upon reading comprehension ability. To this end, an OPT （Oxford Placement Test） was administered to a research population （N = 354） in order to homogenize it. On the basis of the test results, the population was sorted into three groups of reading-low, reading-mid, and reading-high students. Sixty participants with the lowest level of reading comprehension proficiency were randomly selected and assigned to an EG （Experimental Group） （N = 30） and a CG （Control Group） （N = 30）. Afterwards, a TOEFL （Test of English as a Foreign Language） reading comprehension pretest was administered to both groups in order to determine their current level of reading proficiency. Then, the EG received 10 successive 90-minute sessions on GOs as post-reading strategies for expository text comprehension, while the CG received the same amount of treatment on other post-reading strategies. In the end, another TOEFL reading comprehension posttest was administered to the research groups to measure their reading comprehension performance level after the treatment. The results revealed that GOs were statistically more significant and effective for the low-skilled readers than other post-reading strategies.

Research on the Influence of Perceived Value of Social Reading on Teenagers'Reading Ability

Adolescence is the golden stage for developing reading ability.Reading ability is an important factor in promoting teenagers'know-how and cognitive structure.For teenagers who are at the stage of forming views on the world,life,and values,reading is a key part of understanding the external world.This study is an empirical analysis conducted on 210 teenagers through questionnaires to explore the influence of perceived value of social reading on teenagers'reading ability by using the structural equation model.The results show that first,the perceived value of social reading affects teenagers'reading ability;second,social reading motivation is the mediator of the above relationship;third,the perceived value of social reading affects teenagers'reading ability through reading motivation.In regard to that,it is proposed that the characteristics of perceived value should be made use to stimulate students'learning motivation and improve teenagers'reading ability in the process of policy formulation of governmental departments and the teaching in schools.

Considering the present situation, the aim of English teaching in middle schools in our country, according to the teaching syllabus, is to train the students to listen, speak, read and write ; to lay particular emphasis on the students’ reading skill so as to pave the way for their further learning and using the language properly. How can the readers make improvements in reading? There are many skills to improve one’s ability of reading comprehension. I. The knowledge of words. One of the most important skills in reading is the knowledge of word. The number of the words you know determines the difficulty and complexity of the material you can read and understand. If you have an extremely limited reading vocabulary, you will be able to read only very simple material. Obviously, vocabulary forms a stumbling block for the poor reader. The more words you memorize, the faster you read the article. So, it is necessary to memorize words as much as you can.

Increased Visual Acuity Will Not Necessarily Equal an Increased Reading Ability in Patients with Subfoveal Neovascular Macular Degeneration

Reading ability in the elderly means independence, and quality of life. In age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the main deficit is the loss of reading ability. The neovascular form is the leading cause of vision loss in the developed world among people over 50 years of age. With ranibizumab (Lucentis) a drug treatment has become available, but, despite good outcome of visual acuity, patients often report that their reading ability has been affected. We aimed therefor to study reading performance with Tobii Eye Tracker in patients, treated with intravitrial Lucentis. Twenty patients, 15 female and 5 male (range 74 - 98 year), were recruited from St. Erik Eye Hospital. All had, before and after treatment, their reading speed, comprehension, fixations, saccadic eye movements measured while reading two texts with an equal readability rating. For all eye movement parameters, except the number of regressions per word, there was no statistically significant difference when comparing the results from before and after treatment. However, a statistically significant increase in the number of regressions per word after treatment as well as increased visual acuity and comprehension, were found. Reading is fundamental in our society and should be tested in order to fully understand a patient’s complaints;however, an increased VA will not necessarily equal an increased reading ability. The results also show that the Tobii system is suitable for evaluation of reading performance in a clinical setting, and can together with other tests, give valuable information about the patients complains and the outcome of a treatment.

The Using Condition of Interactive Reading Strategy in Reading Scientific and Technological English Literature of Postgraduates of Engineering

In the reading process and after reading of the scientific and technological English literature for postgraduates of engineering, there are several barriers like the understanding of the vocabulary, the analyzing the complex sentences and the grasping the whole texts. This paper tries to investigate the using condition of interactive reading strategy in reading scientific and technological English literature of postgraduates of engineering. The study reveals that postgraduates of engineering frequently using some of strategies of the interactive reading strategy, but the overall using condition is only in the average level, and is not so flexible.

The Effect of Reading Aloud on English Speaking Ability

English speaking ability is one of the most direct ways and standards to judge whether one’s English is good or not.How to improve English speaking ability is always a heated topic among English learners.Many educators have examined that reading English aloud has been attested to be an effective method of learning English,especially improving English speaking ability.This paper,through a questionnaire survey,is to analyze the relationship between students’oral English outcome and their reading aloud,followed by the reasons why reading aloud affects English speaking ability,attempting to find out effective strategies to help English learners to improve their English speaking ability.
