Acupuncture as an Alternative Therapy in the Management of Burning Mouth Syndrome(BMS)

In the routine of dental care,complaints of burning sensation,burning tongue and dry mouth are frequent.Due to the complexity of etiology and diagnosis,treating patients with these sensations is a challenge for clinicians.This study aimed to assess acupuncture as an alternative therapy for patients with burning mouth syndrome(BMS).Clinical data were collected from visits of patients to the School of Dentistry of Piracicaba,State University of Campinas,with the application of a protocol of acupuncture points:LI-4(Hegu),HT-7(Shenmen),SP-6(Sanyinjiao),ST-36(Zusanli),REN-23(Lianquan),REN-6(Qihai),LI-11(Quchi),ExHn3(Yintang),LV-3(Taichong),ExHn12(Jinjin),and ExHn13(Yuye)to treat the symptoms of BMS,from August 2017 to March 2020.The sample consisted of 6 volunteers–5 female and 1 male patients–aged 40 to 79 years.The intensity of BMS was assessed before and after each session with self-reported verbal numerical rating scale(VNRS)during the treatment.On average,each patient had 8.16 sessions using 9.92 acupuncture points per session.Variation of VNRS during the treatment showed a decline in burning mouth in most patients,and 83.34%of the sample showed partial or total improvement of symptoms.This study showed that acupuncture was effective in relieving burning mouth,reducing it by 43%,representing an alternative therapy in the management of symptoms of burning mouth syndrome.

STUDY ON ACUPUNCTURE AND MOXIBUSTION THERAPY FOR FEMALE URETHRAL SYNDROME

Among 180 patients with female urethral syndrome, 128 were treated by acupuncture and moxibustion and 52 by western medicine as controls. The short-term effective rate in the acupuncture and moxibustion group was 90.6% and the long-term effective rate, 80.4%; whereas the short-term effective rate of the control group was 26.9% (P 0.05). Sixty-nine cases from the acupuncture and moxibustion group and 39 from the control group were subjected before and after treatment to determinations of the maximal bladder pressure, maximal abdominal pressure, bladder-neck pressure, and maximal urethral closure pressure during urination. All these indexes were decreased remarkably in the acupuncture and moxibustion group, while no changes were observed in the control group.

Acupuncture for irritable bowel syndrome: A blinded placebo-controlled trial

AIM:Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder and many patients fail to find adequate relief from conventional therapies for their symptoms. This study tests the claim that acupuncture is effective for a majority of these patients. METHODS: A prospective, blinded, sham acupuncture-controlled trial of traditional Chinese acupuncture was performed at a single postgraduate teaching hospital in Europe. Sixty patients with well-established IBS were recruited. The blinded comparator was sham acupuncture administered by the second of two acupuncturists who alone was aware of the randomization, and who otherwise followed the prescription of the first. The primary end-point was a defined fall in the symptom score at 13 wk (by intention to treat). The prior expectation was a 30% placebo response, and a response rate of 70% from acupuncture, for which the study was adequately powered. RESULTS: Patients in treated and sham groups improved significantly during the study-mean improvement in scores being equal (minus 1.9) and significant for both (P<0.05; one-tailed t test). There was a small numeric but nonsignificant difference between the response rate in patients receiving acupuncture (40.7%) and sham treatment (31.2%). Several secondary end-points marginally favored active treatment, but an improved symptom score of any degree of magnitude occurred more often with sham therapy (65.6% vs 59.2%). For no criterion was statistical significance approached. CONCLUSION: Traditional Chinese acupuncture is relatively ineffective in IBS in the European hospital setting, and the magnitude of any effect appears insufficient to warrant investment in acupuncture services.

Electric Acupuncture in the Treatment of 36 Cases of Female Urethral Syndrome

Since 1999, the authors have used electricacupuncture to treat 36 cases of female urethralsyndrome with good therapeutic effects as comparedto that of the routine treatment. The following is areport of it.

Integrative techniques using acupuncture,Chinese herbal medicine,diet,and supplements for polycystic ovary syndrome:a case report

Patients with a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome （PCOS） are on the rise. About 4%-12% of women are currently estimated to have this condition. It is hypothesized that PCOS appears in women who have long-standing insulin resistance （1R）, which leads to high androgen and testosterone levels; this ultimately disrupts their menstrual cycles. Some researchers attribute IR to genetic factors, although there have been only minute changes in the human genome in the past 20 000 years. However, even with a stable gene pool, genes can be turned on and offby the environment, food and air quality and toxin exposure.

Acupuncture Treatment of Menopausal Syndrome

Case HistoryMs. Li, aged 51 years, a staff member from a certain university in Beijing, paid her first visit on Feb. 17,2003, with the chief complaint of irregular menstrual cycle for more than 2 years. The patient complained that in the recent two years, she had shortened menstrual cycle, sometimes only with a 10-day interval between each two cycles, and each menstrual period lasting 3-10 days. The menstrual blood was profuse and fresh-red in color, accompanied with such symptoms as feverish sensation in the face,uncontrollable irritability and peevishness, poor sleep,excitation, difficulty in falling asleep. She also sometimes had vexation, palpitation, dizziness,forgetfulness, lumbar soreness, dry throat and thirst,dry stool, and yellow urine. She had been diagnosed by western medicine to have menopausal syndrome,and treated with western medicine accordingly with little effect.

Acupuncture for Treatment of Climacteric Syndrome—A Report of 35 Cases

To evaluate the effects of acupuncture for treatment of climacteric syndrome.Methods:The 65 cases in this series were randomly assigned to the acupuncture group (N=35) and the control group (N=30), with the former treated by acupuncture and the latter by medication respectively.The therapeutic effects were evaluated by means of the clinical outcome,improvement in the symptom scores and the results of radioimmunoassays.Results:In the acupuncture group,12 cases were cured,16 cases markedly effective,and 6 cases improved,the total effective rate being as high as 97.14%.The decrease in the symptom scores,and especially the elevation of the decreased E_2 level and the decrease of the increased FSH and LH levels, demonstrated that acupuncture therapy was superior to medication.Conclusion:Acupuncture for regulating the mental activities and reinforcing the kidney is an effective therapy for climacteric syndrome.

ACUPUNCTURE AT NEIGUAN POINT FOR TREATMENT OF 106 CASES OF LOW PULSE PRESSURE SYNDROME

In spite of normal mean aterlal pressure,decrease of pulse pressure can induce a seriesof clinical symptoms,which is termed as low pulse pressure syndrorne.Acupuncture at bilateralNeiguan（PC 6）is Capable of raising systolic pressure, lowering diastolic pressure, increasing pulsepressure difference and eliminating corresponding symptoms.The effective rate was more than 92％in this observation.

ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT OF 36 CASES OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

In the present study, 36 cases of irritable bowel syndrome were treated by acupuncturing some acupoints selected according to differentiation of syndromes of traditional Chinese medicine.After 10 - 30 sessions of treatment, 35 cases were cured and the rest one case had improvement, with the effective rate being 100 %.

THE THIRD LUMBAR TRANSVERSE PROCESS SYNDROME TREATED BY ELECTROACUPUNCTURE AT HUATUOJIAJI POINTS

32 cases of the third lumbar transverse process syndrome were treated mainly byelectroacupuncture at Huatuojiaji points of the first and second lumbar vertebrae, andanother 30 cases of the syndrome by conventional acupuncture as the controls. The resultsshowed that treatment by electroacupuncture at Huatuojiaji points was superior inanalgesic effect and clinical total effective rate to that by conventional acupuncture. It isconsidered that the mechanism of treatment by electroacupuncture at Huatuojiaji pointsis related to the trunk of posterior ramus of the spinal nerve where the points are located.

A Meta-analysis of Acupuncture Treatment for Irritable Bowel Syndrome

To assess the efficacy of acupuncture for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome through meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in recent 20 years.Online databases,including CNKI,VIP,WANFANG,PubMed,Cochrane Library,Web of Science and Embase were searched for randomized controlled trials(RCTs)of acupuncture for IBS.Retrieval time was from January 1,2000 to January 31,2021.According to Jadad scoring criteria,the bias risk and quality assessment of each RCT included were evaluated by two researchers.RevMan 5.3 software was used for the metaanalysis.Eight RCTs were selected which include a total of 1181 patients.The control group has 425 patients and the experimental group has 756 patients.The result of meta-analysis indicates that the total effective rate for the experimental group was superior to that of the control group[OR=3.29,95%CI[2.16~5.03](P<0.01)],and the funnel plot was basically symmetric.Acupuncture therapy is shown to have a good safety and compliance record.However,the number of high-quality trials is small,and there are some deficiencies in the methodology of clinical research.Acupuncture,as a supplementary therapy for irritable bowel syndrome,has positive clinical significance and prospects for application.The methodology of clinical research needs to be further improved.

300 CASES OF MENOPAUSAL SYNDROME TREATED BY ACUPUNCTURE

Caused by hypo-ovarianism, menopausal syndrome usually occurs in women aged from 45-55 years. With high incidence and various symptoms, the disease often severely jeopardize the health of the women. The authors had treated 300 cases of menopausal syndrome by acupuncture and obtained a good result.

“Tong Guan Li Qiao” Acupuncture Therapy on Post-Stroke Dysphagia

The differences between the“Tong Guan Li Qiao”acupuncture therapy and the conventional and current other acupuncture methods for poststroke dysphagia are as follows:first,it adheres to the basic idea of "Xing Nao Kai Qiao"acupuncture therapy in selecting and combining acupoints,centers on the brain,and combines the dysphagia symptoms of the mouth,tongue,and throat-related orifices with the root cause of"brain";second,thereare strictand standard requirements intheacupuncture operation,that is,manipulation quantification.In addition to standardized twirling,lifting,and thrusting,the techniques of deep needling on the acupoints in the neck region,blood-letting puncturing at the posterior wallof the pharynx,and theneedling sensation of"like a fishbone getting stuck in the throat"are all unique.

Treatment of 40 Cases of Poststroke Shoulder-Hand Syndrome by Acupuncture

Acupuncture and rehabilitation therapies were used to treat 40 cases of shoulder-hand syndrome, the results show that integration of acupuncture and rehabilitation can increase therapeutic effects and shorten treatment courses to accelerate recovery.

Clinical Study on Therapeutic Effect of Acupuncture on Behcet's Disease

Forty-six cases of Behcet's disease were randomly divided into two groups. The 26 cases in the treatmentgroup were treated by acupuncture and the 20 cases in the control group with the drugs. The level ofL-chain (κ) of IgM and the level of the trace element Zn were determined before and after treatment inthe treatment group. The results showed that the recurrence rate in the treatment group was significantlylower than that in the control group (P＜0.01), and the differences in the level of L-chain (κ) of IgM andlevel of Zn in the treatment group before and after treatment were very significant (P＜0.01). These twoindexes tended to become normal after treatment.

CLINICAL STUDY ON SPLEEN-STOMACH-REINFORCING MOXIBUSTION TREATMENT OF DIARRHEA-TYPE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

In the present paper, the therapeutic effect of spleen- stomach- reinforcing moxibustion for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is observed and its underlying mechanisms on immunity are analyzed. A total of 72 IBS patients are randomly divided into moxibustion group (n= 46) and acupuncture group (control group, n = 26). Acu-points used are Zhongwan (CV 12), Qihai (CV 6) and Zusanli (ST 36), etc. Serum IgG, IgA and IgM contents, blood T-lympocytes (T3+, T4+, T8+) counts, T4+ /T8+, cancer embryonic antigen (CEA) content, serum IL-2 and slL-2R contents are assayed for evaluating changes of the immunocompetence. After two courses of treatment (24 sessions), results show that in moxibustion group, 25 cases (54.35%) are cured, 17 experience improvement in clinical symptoms and 4 have no apparent changes, with an effective rate of 91.30% ; in control group, 8 cases (30. 78%) are cured, 12 experience improvement and 6 have no marked improvement, with an effective rate of 76.92% . The therapeutic effect of moxibustion is significantly superior to that of acupuncture (P<0.01). In addition, moxibustion can effectively rectify abnormal immune function and stabilize human's immunity. This research provides a reliable experimental basis for clinical application of 'principal prescription of moxibustion for reinforcing the spleen and stomach'.

Effects of Acupuncture on Humoral Immunologic Function and Trace Elements in 20 Cases of Behcet's Disease

Acupuncture therapy could normalize both increased light chain K value of IgM and lowered trace element Zn content in patients with Behcet's disease with statistically significant differences,suggesting that acupuncture therapy can elevate humoral immunologic function and improve metabolism of the trace element in these patients.

Piriformis Syndrome Treated by Triple Puncture with-the Bai Hu Yao Tou Maneuver

Piriformis syndrome is often seen in patients of middle and senior ages. It is manifested by pain in the hip with limited motion of the lower limbs.Prolonged course of the disease may lead to atrophy of muscles of the legs.

THE EFFECT OF ELECTROACUPUNCTURE ON AUDITORY P300 POTENTIAL IN MONGOLISM CASES

In treating children with mongolism(Down’s syndrome)with electroacupuncture,thelatent period of P3 is shortened,which shows that the cerebral reaction to externalstimulus in classification,encoding and recognition is accelerated.Along with the elevatedP3 amplitude,the cerebrum is more capable of processing the external information,showing improvement of the mental state.
