Influence of Tibetan Language and Culture on Tibetan College Students' EFL Learning

Nowadays teaching English as a foreign language is becoming more and more important in Tibetan education.Since Ti-betan education system is complicated,Tibetan college students are facing many problems which interfere with their EFL learning.By carrying on a mini qualitative study of interviewing two Tibetan college students,this paper mainly discusses the major prob-lems and causes of the Tibetan college students on EFL learning on linguistic and cultural perspectives,and attempts to suggestsome solutions.

New progress and problems of Quaternary moraine dating in the Tibetan Plateau

Since the 20th century, numerous Quaternary moraine dating methods have emerged, including lichenometric, moraine 14C, quartz sand thermoluminescence （TL）, electron spin resonance （ESR）, optically stimulated luminescence （OSL） and 10Be, 26A1, 36C1, 3H, 21Ne nuclide dating methods. These dating methods are widely applied to determine moraine ages and have provided a large dataset. Unfortunately each method has its defects. In this paper, we will review these various dating methods and provide some comments.

Critical Review of Wang Ge and Zhou Zhen: Intercultural Language Education in China——Problems and Prospect

In the published paper" Intercultural Language Education in China - Problems and Prospect" by Wang ge and Zhou zhen, it mainly discusses the problems of intercultural language education (ILE) in china from four facets: the perspectives of language planning; teach-ing methodology; material development and the teacher education. It also focuses on its function in an EFL curriculum concerning of raising intercultural awareness and training intercultural competence. In the process of instruction, students are supposed to be exposed to multicul-tural contents and various culture input. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to develop a well-tailored ILE curriculum and textbooks. This article is to review Wang and Zhou's points critically. Thus, it can evoke the awareness of course designers to attach the importance of ILT and call for relevant actions.

To Solve the Problems of English Teaching in China: A Comprehensive Literature Review

The Problems of CLT for ESL in Universities in China

Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) has become one of the most important teaching approaches in the fields ofTeaching English to the Speakers of Other Language(TESOL). Not only in the western developed countries, but also in developingcountries, for example, China is also influenced by the approach of CLT in its English as a Second Language(ESL) classes. Particu-larly ESL classes of universities in China have used CLT as an important approach in teaching English speaking, listening, readingand writing. From the previous study and research there are evidences showed that CLT for ESL in universities in China have theiradvantages and values,but the classes still have some problems and need to develop which proved the hypothesis before research.

DEPICT:A High-level Formal Language for Modeling Constraint Satisfaction Problems

The past decade witnessed rapid development of constraint satisfaction technologies, where algorithms are now able to cope with larger and harder problems. However, owing to the fact that constraints are inherently declarative, attention is quickly turning toward developing high-level programming languages within which such problems can be modeled and also solved. Along these lines, this paper presents DEPICT, the language. Its use is illustrated through modeling a number of benchmark examples. The paper continues with a description of a prototype system within which such models may be interpreted. The paper concludes with a description of a sample run of this interpreter showing how a problem modeled as such is typically solved.

Quantum Mechanics and the Philosophy of Language:Reconsideration of Traditional Philosophies

Recently we proposed “a new interpretation of quantum mechanics (called quantum and classical measurement theory)” in this journal (JQIS: Vol. 1, No. 2), which was characterized as the metaphysical and linguistic turn of quantum mechanics. This turn from physics to language does not only realize the remarkable extension of quantum mechanics but also yield the quantum mechanical world view (i.e., the philosophy of quantum mechanics). And thus, the turn urges us to dream that traditional philosophies (i.e., Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, John Locke, Berkeley, Hume, Kant, Saussure, Wittgenstein, etc.) can be understood in the quantum mechanical world view. This dream will be challenged in this paper. We, of course, know that most scientists are skeptical to philosophy. Still, we can expect that readers find a good linguistic philosophy (i.e. philosophy of language) in quantum mechanics.

Readability Assessment of Textbooks in Low Resource Languages

Readability is a fundamental problem in textbooks assessment.For low resources languages(LRL),however,little investigation has been done on the readability of textbook.In this paper,we proposed a readability assessment method for Tibetan textbook(a low resource language).We extract features based on the information that are gotten by Tibetan segmentation and named entity recognition.Then,we calculate the correlation of different features using Pearson Correlation Coefficient and select some feature sets to design the readability formula.Fit detection,F test and T test are applied on these selected features to generate a new readability assessment formula.Experiment shows that this new formula is capable of assessing the readability of Tibetan textbooks.

Cross-Language Transfer Learning-based Lhasa-Tibetan Speech Recognition

As one of Chinese minority languages,Tibetan speech recognition technology was not researched upon as extensively as Chinese and English were until recently.This,along with the relatively small Tibetan corpus,has resulted in an unsatisfying performance of Tibetan speech recognition based on an end-to-end model.This paper aims to achieve an accurate Tibetan speech recognition using a small amount of Tibetan training data.We demonstrate effective methods of Tibetan end-to-end speech recognition via cross-language transfer learning from three aspects:modeling unit selection,transfer learning method,and source language selection.Experimental results show that the Chinese-Tibetan multi-language learning method using multilanguage character set as the modeling unit yields the best performance on Tibetan Character Error Rate(CER)at 27.3%,which is reduced by 26.1%compared to the language-specific model.And our method also achieves the 2.2%higher accuracy using less amount of data compared with the method using Tibetan multi-dialect transfer learning under the same model structure and data set.

Foresights, Expectations and Implications of China＇s Foreign Language Proficiency Scaling and Rating Framework

Referring to the well established foreign language proficiency evaluation scale frameworks such as the CEFR （Common European Framework of Reference for Languages） in Europe and ILR （The Interagency Language Roundtable） scale in the United States, Chinese language education authority is dedicating great efforts to the contruction of the Chinese targeted and tailored national proficiency evaluation system. The Critique of Bley-Vroman's Logical Problems

The article focuses on some points of view in disagreement with Bley-Vroman's. In the author's opinion, different from the L1 learning, UG is not or partially accessible to the adult foreign language learners. Some evidence is exposed to support the author's hypothesis. The author will illustrate this from the following aspects: the concept of UG, the relation of L2 learning and problem-solving, UG accessibility, critical period, comprehensible input and interlanguage.

Cultivation of Applied Foreign Language Talents in the Context of Hubei Free Trade Zone

Sign Language Benefits Tibetan Deaf-mutes

There are in Tibet Autonomous Region 190,000 disabled persons, including more than 30,000 who are deaf-mutes or are hearing impaired. In the Tibetan language, a word is often expressed with different signs. This poses a serious handicap for communication and exchanges among Tibetan deaf-mutes and their effort to participate in social activities. The ongoing research and development of a Tibetan sign language is expected to get rid of that handicap and allow Tibetan deaf-mutes to lead a normal life.
