Purpose: To evaluate tooth preparation for full veneer cast restorations performed by final year dental students in Sudan. Materials and Methods: 117 stone dies from two different dental institutions were collected and evaluated. Polyvinylsilioxane impression material was used to produce two impressive replicas of which one was sectioned in faciolingual plane and the other in mesiodistal plane. Occlusal clearance was measured using a digital caliper. Amount of axial preparation was also measured. Impression silhouettes that were produced using an overhead projector were used to measure convergence angle. Working casts were examined for smoothness and evenness of the preparations, existence or absence of additional features of retention and the finishing line were evaluated for its position and continuity. All obtained data were statistically analyzed by using T-test, ANO-VA, and Pearson Chi square tests. P-values ≤ 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: Average taper of the examined preparations was 39.98?, with 44.1? in the faciolingual, and 35.8? in the mesiodistal dimensions. Preparations for full coverage restorations were over prepared. 38.5% of the total number of preparations were found to have finishing lines in the sub and supra gingival positions. 19.66% were unable to maintain continuity of the finishing line all around the preparation. All preparations were generally smooth with no sharp angles, and 1.7% of the preparations had additional retentive features. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that the convergence angle and finishing line preparations were less than adequate in a sizeable proportion of the preparations examined. 展开更多

In dentistry, speech evaluation is important for appropriate orofacial dysfunction rehabilitation. The speech intelligibility test is often used to assess patients’ speech, and it involves an evaluation by human listeners. However, the test has certain shortcomings, and an alternative method, without a listening procedure, is needed. The purpose of this study was to test the applicability of an automatic speech intelligibility test system using a computerized speech recognition technique. Speech of 10 normal subjects, when wearing a dental appliance, was evaluated using an automatic speech intelligibility test system that was developed using computerized speech recognition software. The results of the automatic test were referred to as the speech recognition scores. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyze differences in the results of the test between the following 2 conditions: with the palatal plate in place and with the palatal plate removed. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to evaluate whether the speech recognition score correlated with the result of conventional intelligibility test. The speech recognition score was significantly decreased when wearing the plate (z = -2.807, P = 0.0050). The automatic evaluation results positively correlated with that of conventional evaluation when wearing the appliance (r = 0.729, P = 0.017). The automatic speech testing system may be useful for evaluating speech intelligibility in denture wearers. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Palato-radicular groove(PRG)is defined as an anomalous formation of teeth. The etiology of PRG remains unclear. The prognosis of a tooth with a PRG is unfavorable. The treatment of combined periodontal-endodontic lesions requires multidisciplinary management to control the progression of bone defects. Some researchers reported cases that had short-term observations. The management of teeth with PRGs is of great clinical significance. However,to date,no case reports have been documented on the use of bone regeneration and prosthodontic treatment for PRGs.CASE SUMMARY This case reported the management of a 40-year-old male patient with the chief complaint of slight mobility and abscess in the upper right anterior tooth for 15 d and was diagnosed with type II PRG of tooth 12 with combined endodonticperiodontal lesions. The accumulation of plaque and calculus caused primary periodontitis and a secondary endodontic infection.A multidisciplinary management approach was designed that included root canal therapy, groove sealing,a periodontal regenerative procedure, and prosthodontic treatment.During a 2-year follow-up period,a good prognosis was observed.CONCLUSION This report indicates that bone regeneration and prosthodontic treatment may contribute to the long-term favorable prognosis of teeth with PRGs. 展开更多

Background: The mental, physical and social impediments cause limitation of chances in normal life as an equal level with others of the community;particularly in relation to maintain good oral hygiene and periodontal health among the disabled patients who were receiving fixed partial denture. So the present study was performed to evaluate the periodontal tissue status among mental retardation patients with fixed prosthodontic appliances. Subjects and Methods: A total of 400 patients between the ages 18 and 50 years were clinically selected from outpatient clinics, college of dentistry, King Khalid University and rehabilitation center in Abha city, Saudi Arabia. They were divided into two equal groups as the following: group I: Two hundred mental retardation patients without fixed prosthodontic appliances (control group) and, group II: Two hundred mental retardation patients had fixed prosthodontic appliances for at least a year ago. A complete periodontal clinical examination was performed and the following indices were recorded: plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI), and clinical attachment loss (CAL). All data was recorded and analyzed by ANOVA test. Results: The clinical results of the present study confirmed the relationship among the mental retardation, fixed prosthodontic appliances and destruction of periodontal tissues. It has been found that the severity of periodontal disease increases among the study group compared to the control group. Statistically significant differences were found in PLI, GI and CAL in the comparison between group I and II (p Conclusion: There was a negative relationship between mental retardation with a status of periodontal tissues and oral hygiene among the patients under fixed prosthodontic management. 展开更多

Epilepsy has direct negative effects on sufferers’ general dental condition and oral health, both of which are further affected by inadequate oral hygiene;poor oral hygiene itself is often also caused by epilepsy-related poor health. Consequently, tooth loss, caries and periodontal disease occur increasingly often in epilepsy sufferers and they need more dental treatment. However, in fact the epileptic patients can receive fewer and simpler treatment modalities. The aim of this study was to review and synthesize recent studies on dental treatment in epilepsy patients and to mention potential triggers for seizures in dental practice. 展开更多

Zirconia-based bioceramics have been widely applied in the field of prosthodontics owing to its desir- able mechanical performance, biocompatibility and aesthetics. However, the low-temperature degradation (LTD) of tetragonal zirconia (ZrOJ under intraoral condition can lead to the deterioration of mechanical properties of ZrO2 dental crowns, which contribute to many clinical failures in long-term observations. The long-term tetragonal phase stability and mechanical properties of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zir- conia polycrystal (Y-TZP) are influenced by grain size of ZrO2 crystals, distribution and properties of stabilizers, the humid environment, etc. However, it is still difficult to control the abovementioned factors at the same time. This review summarizes the major advances in researches dealing with LTD and clari- fies the obstacles to stabilization of the tetragonal ZrO2. Furthermore, the suggestions on improving the LTD resistance of tetragonal ZrO2 are proposed, which is the catalyst to promote the long-term stability of ZrO2-based all-ceramic crowns. 展开更多
