Screening and Analysis of Methanolic Leaf Extract of Psorospermum febrifugum(SPACH)

Phytochemical components have been reported for various plants but very little information on Psorospermum febrifugum(SPACH).The presence of biocidal activity makes the spach of potential interest for the control of mi­cro-organisms.Methanolic extract of the leaves of spach shows the various constituents(alkaloids,flavonoids,terpenoids,tannins,phenols,and ste­roids).Further investigation revealed phytoconstituents of methanolic leaf extract using gas chromatography-spectrophotometric techniques(GC-MS).Result of GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of eight(8)botanical pes­ticides with valuable biological activities.The GC-MS results revealed that eight(8)biocidal activities were present in spach namely:1,2,3,4-tetra­chloronaphtalene,Permetrin-a,permetrin-b,cyfluthrin-b,cypermethrin-a,cypermethrin-c,and flumethrin-b.The result clearly shows that Psorosper­mum febrifugum hold phytocomponents species of botanical interest that could still be exploited. 展开更多

A new flavonol glycoside, 3'-(4'"-(3'"',4'"'-dihydroxyphenoxy)-2'"-hydroxyphenoxy)acanthophorin B (la) to- gether with 3'-(2'",4"'-dihydroxyphenoxy)acanthophorin B (1), acanthophorin B (2), vismiaquinone (3), rheochrysidin (3a), lupeol acetate and fatty acid were isolated from the chloroform extract of the stem bark of Psorospermum androsaemifolium Baker (Clusiaceae). The structure of la was determined on the basis of detailed spectroscopic analysis and comparison with the literature. Compounds la and 3a showed moderate antimicrobial activity. 展开更多

AIM:To isolate,characterize and investigate the antifungal activity of the root bark of Psorospermum corymbiferum(Clusiaceae).METHODS:The finely ground root bark of Psorospermum corymbiferum was cold-extracted by percolation with 98% ethanol(5.0 L) for two weeks.The ethanol extract was macerated with n-hexane,chloroform,ethylacetate and methanol successively to give the respective solvent extracts.Fractionation of the extract was done using column chromatography on silica gel with cyclohexene:ethylacetate(1:1) as eluents,and the subfractions were purified by TLC using cyclohexane:ethylacetate(7:3).The structures were elucidated based on spectral analysis(IR,1H NMR and 13C NMR) in comparison with the data with those reported in the literature.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) was determined on Candida alblican and Candida stelloroides.RESULTS:Three known compounds,acetylvismione F,prenylated bianthrone and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone and a steroid were isolated from the plant.MIC determined on Candida alblican and C.stelloroides were 20 and 15 μg.mL-1,respectively.The steroidal compound(diosgenin) was characterized for the first time from Psorospermum corymbiferum(Clusiaceae).CONCLUSION:The results suggested that the isolation has anticandidal properties,supporting the use of this plant in folk medicine.The current drug of choice for disseminated Candidiasis is amphotericin B with MIC of 0.39 μg.mL-1,which could be a promising lead for a new antifungal drug especially if subjected to SAR in antifungal drug design. 展开更多
